I asked the service department regarding heavy towing with my 2022 Tacoma near Max capacity. The service guy said that he did a lot of towing, so coming from a good source that understands the Toyota and also Towing in general. He said with ETC on keep the gear shifter in the S position for local driving. On the highway at cruising speed it's okay to switch into the D position and let it go into overdrive. Back to S went off the highway and there will be speed fluctuations. For going downhill he said to keep it in S and let the engine do some of the braking. It is designed for engine braking. Pulse the brakes as well. Don't ride the brakes all the way downhill because they will smoke. Basically said to split the workload between engine and brakes for going downhill. I also verified that the gear shift in the S position is a gear limiter. Not a gear selector. It does not let it go above the selected gear but it will go below. They probably have some safety overrides.
Thank you for clarifying that the S position is a gear limiter. Because the one time I tried to use it I felt the gears shifting and didn't understand why it did so I haven't used it again. On my previous vehicles if you choose a gear, that's the one it stays in. And that's what I tried to do since I wanted to drive on the highway keeping the revs as low as possible but even if I put it in gear 6, the Tacoma will downshift to rev more and that didn't happen in other vehicles I've owned. I suppose that being a pick up with towing function maybe the gear S is more focused on that type of use, or maybe on the highway and thus make it rev more on overtaking...although my intention was to use it so that it does not rev since on my road there is no need to overtake.
For those unaware, the number on the dash when shifting manually is not "actually" the gear you are currently in. It's the top gear it will use while driving. You're basically setting a range. So when you pop it over you could be going 10 mph in second, but as you accelerate it automatically change gears up and down as normal but won't go past the top number on the dash. As that happens the number on the dash stays the same no matter what gear you are in. I had no idea that's how it worked but it's true. I'm used to my BMW where you are actually changing gears and the number displayed on the dash is the actual gear you are in. Which in my opinion is a way better driving experience. However that is not the case on Toyota. Maybe it's good for towing or something where you want to stay in a lower gear range? I didn't know about the hold for 6th thing but I guess the would be useful when transitioning from a hill to flat open land? Still wish it worked like BMW, it would be an awesome workaround for gear hunting.
I think 5 and 6 are your overdrive gears so its set to keep it out of those when first put in this mode. It will also hold gears a little longer in this setting so its good for driving roads with lots of elevation changes. I have a really steep driveway so I just set it to 1 so it will hold first gear for the whole climb - I do wish we had full manual selection as an option
I call it gear limits. Limits you from going pass that gear. Ov tune and kd max tune does a good job on the gear hunting. I have kd max and love it. Also one version of kd max has gear lock. It will act like a true manual without a clutch. It will eventually shift for you to the point of the engine stalling
The manual shifter is fantastic when approaching a big uphill grade. I like the 4th gear default. Works perfect. Gives the truck a nice boost in the 3000-3500 RPM range without fighting the automatic all the time. Easy to stay in cruise control as you pass by other vehicles struggling up the hill.

I have a 2019 off road with a smart key. Smart keys constantly send out a signal. If you hold the lock button on the smart key and then hit unlock twice while holding down the lock button it will shut off the smart key. It helps save the battery and thieves can't pick up your signal so they can make their own key to your truck and steal it. All you have to do to turn it back on is hit any button.
The only reason you shouldn't let it go below a quarter is because the bits of sediment and dirt will kick up in the tank when you go to fill it. That goes for all vehicles, not just Tacomas.
@@sethjansson5652 Yes. Fuel injected engines require higher fuel pressures than the older vehicles with carbs. Because of the work the fuel pump has to do, it gets very hot. The manufacturers put the pumps into the tank so that the fuel in the tank keeps them cool. It is for this reason that you should not run your vehicle with less than 1/4 tank of fuel. Once the fuel level drops below that level, the pump is not submerged anymore, and it then has no way to dissipate the heat. This will lead to premature failure of the pump... Usually about an $800.00 repair.

In the 5th gen 4Runner, that S mode is effectively our “tow/haul” mode. Keeps gears longer and reduces torque converter slip by quite a bit. I use it on the highway to keep me in 5th on hilly roads and eek out a bit better mpg
For me with the shift selector my truck takes it as more of a suggestion rather than my choice. It's one of the few things that piss me off about this truck.

You won't need a 10 mm socket, it's a Toyota All you need is to change the oil.
Thanks for the Tips and Tricks... there are some I learned, like the shifting gear, that I never bothered to discover. 👍👌
Heck yeah!
In the 5th gen 4Runner, that S mode is effectively our “tow/haul” mode. Keeps gears longer and reduces torque converter slip by quite a bit. I use it on the highway to keep me in 5th on hilly roads and eek out a bit better mpg
Where you get the seat covers they look awesome
Wait for my next video! Even better ones dropping
For me with the shift selector my truck takes it as more of a suggestion rather than my choice. It's one of the few things that piss me off about this truck.
Yeah after some research it’s not a shifter 🤣 it’s basically a gear limiter.
The ripple looking effect on the bottom of the doors is actually a decal 😎
We’ll not stock from the factory, but maybe some people add a decal there
On my Predator package it is a decal. Difficult to see unless the sun is at the correct position.
Where do you store your headrests when you fold the seats down? My 2020 has storage holes. Is there more than one cigarette lighter receptacle IN THE CAB of 3rd generations?
Your head rests for the back seats go into the bottom of the seats when there folded down
Oh dang Thank you!
12mm for the factory tonneau cover and i take that off way more than my doors.
What’s the best car phone holder that works best with the tacoma?
Enjoying your videos. I have a question. How do I get the trim surrounding the push start button off so that I can access the wires behind it?
It’s a lonnnnng presses.
You have to start with taking out your screws by your glove box, then by your gears and hand break, then it will come out after some more screws
I’m in love with my manual Tacoma ! I checked everything when I took my baby home in feb ! 10mm socket is always missing ! 😂 what sucks if when I turn off my traction while driving in the snow it still turns on when I’m trying to slip and slide ! Anyone know how to turn it off completely? Tacoma is a beast ! ❤️
Haha fr! Not sure thanks
Press and hold the TC button
@@Bikes_N_Adventure I’ve already tired that
You have to press and hold it for either 3-5 seconds. I'm pretty sure you have to be stationary when you do it.
@@4KOutdoors I’ve tried that . It shows it’s off but it still kicks in .
Ty for all the info
of course!
Nice video just got my 2017 sr5 and loving it bro. Btw I caught that flag 🇵🇸😎 falastini gang

Do you have a tint film on your headlights or which ones do you have? They look awesome
I got them on Amazon
@@TheUnrestricted oh okay just wasn’t sure since the ones linked don’t look smoked. Thanks!
An other tip, if you feel the ac Air is not enough, you can open the window, next tip, if is starting to get dark outside, you can turn your lights on.😂
Hey guys if I think some more tips I'll be posting later. 😂
I have the same seat covers.. but I wasn't able to make them fit well.. how did you install them?
It was tough
If you have a push start you can lock and unlock your car with the Toyota app.
Oooo nice
@Rich G : The app is a paid subscription after the first year. You can remote start using the key fob. Press the lock button on the fob twice. Then press a third time and hold the lock button until the headlights flash 3x, and the truck will start. Press the lock button a fourth time to stop. Works on 2021 with push-to-start (e.g., TRD Off-Road). Not sure about prior years or trims.
@Rich G : Our TRD Off Road has it. I’m not sure which models are so equipped. I assume all 2021’s with push-to-start, or at least any that can be remote started using the app.
شكرا لك ..تعلمت منك الكثير. .من اين اشتريت غطاء الحماية الجلد للكراسي .
Afwan!
You can find them in the link in my description from Amazon!
@The Unrestricted
I'm in ventura County. My son bought me 2022 TRD OFF-ROAD. I may need to use your expertise in the future MODIFICATION.
No worries! I’m not too far in San Diego! Keep my email (in my description)
You can email me anytime

Haha sick man love it!
I only use S4 when towing.
Can you show how to change the settings so the signal lever tap allows the signal flashes to stay on a bit longer. Also what is the default setting from the mfr?
The flash is pre set. Not sure about the mfr
I went to many dealers when i got my 18 sr5 in 2018 no one knew why the paint was like that at the bottom xD
😅 yeah I didn’t know for a while
I hate it when I turn off the truck, open the driver door and immediately the Door Ajar light beeps and blinks. No shit I am trying to get out! Can you stop or delay this beeping???
DANG THAT LAST ONE I NEEDED
Yessss mam 😁
Hey Great video . I would like to know what brand is your seat covers ????? Thanks 🙏
Link in bio

I've had my Taco 5yrs now noway im going to learn anything new from this video....pass the crow TY for the videos!
Hey Is that a 10.mm in ur pocket
If you have Toyota 360, you can change the truck graphic on the screen to match your actual truck color. YT video by Les K.
The BHLM looks great on your MGM Tacoma.
Thanks brother
I liked the falastini flag bro peace!!
🇵🇸🇵🇸❤️❤️
Where did you get those seat covers? Can you share the link
Link in bio!
How do you turn off the front passenger car seat lock mechanism so that it doesn't lock an adult snug to the seat???
This drives my adult passengers crazy and I will never have a car seat in the front of my truck...
Oh hm not sure
I know the buttons on the left in the steering wheel controls the phone but what do the buttons on the right in the steering wheel control. I just got a 2022 Tacoma and Im worried about pushing them i dont want to mess nothing up not knowing
the right side buttons on the steering wheel are for the dash controls. speed, avg speed, distance, etc. i just got a 22 tacoma myself the 27th.
@@bradykline506 You bought 27 2022 Tacoma's??.. LOL.. JK...
I think he meant on the 27th of the month
@@TheUnrestricted LOL, I know.. I was kidding!...
I need an equivalent channel for Gen-1s---especially manuals.
Ah true, make one 😁
@@TheUnrestricted I only got mine a year ago, and put less than 200 miles on it. I got my first (probably last) real truck in my old age. I had a hard time finding a manual---everybody drives automatics.
I’ve managed to squeeze in and sleep on that flat space in the back with the seats folded down
Oh wow! Haha impressive
I don't think it's extra paint on the bottom of the doors it maybe a rubberized paint like GM uses
Hmmm maybe, I thought it’s thick clear coat but idk
