Love Tacoma’s and I’ve had 5 total. 2010, 2012 (stolen), 2015, 2019, and now 2021. But my ‘19 4x4 v6 off road 4-door had a fuel delivery issue at highway speed. I found out last Thursday that there’s a safety recall with no remedy yet that was related to the issue I was having. I traded it in for a ‘21.

PSA: 3rd Gen Tacoma already has a cold air intake, save money, buy a K&N filter. Wheel back spacing will be the same for TRD Off Road, Sport, and Pro (unsure about SR) on the truck; only the factory wheels are different. The first mod anyone should buy for off roading should be rock sliders.
One thing I wished you guys would of touched on when it comes to lifts is the gear ratio and lack of power it may cause from a lift as well as drive shaft spacers or leaf spring shims which are almost a must when lifting the Tacoma. I wish it was as simple as throwing a 6” lift on it and going. Also on the bumpers you guys suggested it would more than likely involve cutting the body to do so. I have lifted around 7 Tacoma’s and on almost all of the lifts have to be done just right.
Absolutely right my friend, wish we had included the re-gearing mod as well! Luckily, the community has come to the rescue, and hopefully people will read the comments :-) Thanks for your contribution!
@@Motoroso That is the great thing about Tacoma owners we all come together if you reach out in the right places and help out! Other than those recommendations you guys covered some great stuff!
You should include getting rid of the stock skid plate up front. There’s multiple options that include a door for the oil filter to be removed without dropping the whole skid plate. More durable and more access…can’t beat that for under $300
My pedal commander will sometimes cause malfunction reads on the dash, why is that? I'll have to unplug it from the pedal ports and let it reset and plug it in again?
I haven’t heard of that happening before. Could possibly be a bent pin in the plug? Or maybe not being seated fully and locked? I recommend calling pedal commanders support line to ask this question.
I live in colorado and Armor is essential here for narrow rocky trails. Skids and sliders for sure and maybe bumpers if you feel like going crazy. Upgrade tires, 235/85/16 = 32inch no rubbing. 255\85/16=33 inch no rubbing. Ovtune is amazing. No need for cai. H11 to h9 halogen headlight mod ~$15 for almost twice the light.
After adding all that weight to your truck, and this is before you add all your gear, you will probably want to look at swapping differential gears as well. that will definitely improve performance from 0-60 and at highway speeds.
Very nice to see the endless mods for the 3rd Gen Tacoma. I am looking to purchase a 2023 TRD Sport or the off road model in the next two weeks. Thanks for sharing.
Ozzie, you’re correct. I switched to 4.88’s, wish I would have gone 5.29’s though. It holds top gear on the hwy much better. Gears would be first on my list even w/o bigger tires. I don’t have a single complaint about swapping. Warranty is out at 36k anyway. That’s 1.5-2 years for most people. It’s a mute point.
With a manual transmission you can eliminate the first two mods with just an intake/exhaust. They have better gears from the factory and the intake helps wake up throttle response a little bit
Hey Aaron, yes both of them are compatible. They are currently backordered due to their popularity! The Pedal Commander is a bit more popular, and coming back in stock sooner. As long as you’re buying well designed and manufactured products, these manufacturers design lifts in a way that corrects geometries and you shouldn’t run into too many issues. If you just want a leveling kit, 2.5-3” max. If you get a proper suspensions lift, 6” is the most common big lift for Tacoma’s.

@@anthonyb6521 the ECU flash definitely has warranty implications, toyota can/will know and then it comes down to whether your dealer service center is "cool" about it or not. So I just bought a 21 Tacoma off road 4x4 access cab. My previous Tacoma was a ‘10, then a ‘15, then a ‘19, now this one. I’ve always had to have a seat pad to address the seating position and in my ‘19, i jacked the rear of the seat with a 2” steel square tube and seat jackers for the front. The power seat in the ‘21 fixed the seating position issue 100%. I also want to put a lift on it and after going to the motoroso site, I was unable to find the mentioned Skyjacker kit.

I have a mercedes sprinter I converted myself.... but something is pulling me towards changing for a tacoma trd pro and getting the overland set up! Any advice? Upsides down sides... I have a wife and a two year old... which should mean the vans easier? I don't know the pull is strong
Well that pull is understandable, these trucks are GREAT! It's a different thing from the van, with some pros/cons. First, in your van you can probably stand up, and have a bit more interior space. But on a Tacoma you will get a LOT more offroad performance and the ability to confidently and quickly get to more remote areas. The best way to set up for overlanding is to go with an overlanding bed rack system with modular sliders to store all your gear and tools, can even install a 12v refrigerator. On top you can get a roof mounted tent and awning to sleep the whole family! There's a lot to talk about here, so one of the best ways to advance the conversation would be to give us a call at 1.833.MOTOROSO, or email us at support@motoroso.com!
Yes, 100% they will work together! The OV tune will have some throttle tuning built in, but the pedal commander will allow you to tune that more precisely. The throttle modules are very simple, and don’t mess with engine tuning at all.
Girlfriend is buying a 2017 4cylinder with a 5speed manual tranny. She is excited... I drive a dodge challenger so when I got behind the wheel it felt like a power wheels with a dead battery to me. Would an ecm tune really do much for a 4 banger? Or just ruin the fuel economy?

Soirry, we don't, we just shot the exhaust after. It was a noticeable increase in the volume and has a throaty tone to it, but not "loud" and not annoying when driving.
Good Question Paul. We don't think it will. The TSS (Toyota Safety Sense) is an integrated camera and radar system that should function just fine as long as it's still pointed forward. www.toyota.com/safety-sense/animation/ahb. Also, Toyota is well aware the popularity of aftermarket modifications, especially with the Tacoma, so I imagine they will have designed the system to accommodate such changes. And lastly, if someone were to load enough weight into the bed of the truck, it would cause a change in the angle of the front-end, again, I believe Toyota will have designed TSS with these eventualities in mind.
It is possible. The sensor comes from the factory calibrated at a certain height. By adding a leveling kit, you're changing the height and that can cause the sensor to read incorrectly.
carlos martinez if that’s correct then adding load the bed of the truck, carrying 4 full size adults in the cab, or changing tires sizes would all have an affect on the ride height of the vehicle. I’d expect the system has been developed to operate within a range. Additionally, the objects it’s designed to be sensing will be at a significant enough distance that 2” of vertical height would be unlikely to have any tangible effect on accuracy/performance. If someone finds anything that explicitly states the system must be recalibrated anytime the ride height of the vehicle is changed more than 1”, we’d like to know that.
I changed the position of my TSS when I swapped grill inserts. Still works fine. You can add some washers to the bolts if you need to reorient it slightly.

At stock ride height you’re not going to get much bigger than stock if you plan to off-road it and want bigger tires you gotta go with a full lift kit to fit those 31 and over sizes
Hey Cruz, in our experience you can bump up to a 265/70/17 (which is a 31.6" tire) without rubbing on a stock Tacoma. But, with a simple 2.5 - 3.0" leveling kit or a 3" lift kit, you can bump up to a 285/70/17, which is 32.7". I don't know why speedos these days aren't measured by GPS. Hell, I ride my bicycles all over and the little bike computer calculates my speed accurately and without fail.
@@williamoftexas1489 Because as soon as you go into a tunnel, narrow canyon, dense city, and so on you’d lose your speedometer. What would be nice though is if the onboard gps calibrated the speedometer. A lot of road bikes (bicycles) are setup this way, and it works well.
I 100% need to get the custom tune mapping. I live in a mountainous area and the shifting points do the opposite of what you want. downshifts two gears and redlines just for a tiny bit of accelration. Then will shift to a lower gear way before it ever gets into powerband, so you apply for gas and it downshifts again TWO gears to redline. What in the HELL were they thinking? My 2000 F-150 V6 manual is a dream to drive in comparision, which is extremely depressing.
Dynamic tests have shown "cold air intakes" often provide no boost in power and often result in less power. Everything is computerized and tuned for factory equipment. Some systems on some vehicles provide a few more horse power.
The truck comes from the factory with a cold air intake.. it pulls from the passenger wheel well.. just get the K&N if you're looking for that lol it'll be a lot cheaper. Snorkel I recommend dobinson 4x4 mine was 300 bucks.
Negative. The cold air intake replaces all the piping from filter to throttle body. Stock plastic has massive resonators, and the intake eliminates all of that and also eliminates turbulent airflow.
I installed a k & n drop in filter and it improved throttle response. This engine air starved especially at lower RPM. The Atkinson cycle engine shortens the intake cycle at lower speeds. Any intake improvement will help. A TRD intake accelerator And k & n intake tube may help as well. These mods are considerably cheaper than a cold air intake. The stock air box is a cold air intake. These mods will open the intake and eliminate the air resonance box. I like the Borla cat back system
100% Getting more air into the system, always better! CAI systems are nice, but just the filter helps for sure, the K&N Filter for the V6 can be bought here: www.motoroso.com/p/45270-kn-replacement-panel-air-filter-for-toyota-2014-tundra-46l57l-2014-sequoia-57l-v8?lid=1731392 And we agree, Borla systems are top notch... here's a link for the S-type cat-back system with the black tip: www.motoroso.com/p/474384-borla-16-18-toyota-tacoma-35l-at-4dr-cc-short-bed-s-type-ss-catback-exhaust-black-chrome-tip?lid=1692186
Hey, there isn't a super simple answer to this question. The best way to get that 1" of "tire poke" is to have a wheel with the correct offset, and a tire large enough to bulge past the fender but NOT rub too much (or at all). A -12 wheel offset brings the wheel out pretty flush with the fender, and then a larger offroad tire will stick out 0.5"-1". If you're trying to get that look with stock wheels, you will not be able to fit a tire large enough to stick out that much with just a different tire (it will rub inside). You can force it by installing wheel spacers with OE wheels, but we generally advise against this. Best solution = Wheels + tires optimized for exactly the look/stance you're trying to achieve. We're here to help with that and get you a good deal too, so hit us up on live chat at www.motoroso.com or call us toll free at 833.MOTOROSO.
No, it's pretty common mod and shouldn't have any impact on your warranty. In many cases te filters in the CAI's are better than stock and provide more protection for the engine.
Thats a lot of personal prefernce. IMHO, Manual is a must in muscle cars and sports cars..... but for a truck, I opt for auto.... depends how much you love shifting those gears, and if you prefer manual for wheelin'! If you get the auto, I think you can get their terrain and crawl control features.

Hey, yeah, we have tons of parts for your 2021 Tacoma, however, not all of our sellers have their fitment data up to date in a timely manner, and it takes time to get it all up to date. In this case, looks like none of them have, sorry! If you filter by '20, or '19 Tacoma, you'll get all the parts you could want, and 99.9% of them transfer over tot he '21. And as usual, we're here to help on live chat at www.motoroso.com or at 1.833.MOTOROSO if you have any questions, or want help finding/confirming parts that fit your Tacoma!
Hey Mark, no, not necessarily. Wheel size is not as important as tire size. You can go from a 16" to a 17" wheel, but keep the exact same tire diameter and have literally no change in the leverage on the drivetrain. If you go from a 31" to a 33" tires, you don't even necessarily NEED to re-gear, although re-gearing is a great way to get more torque through the drivetrain to deal with those larger tires.
Absolutely, it just changes the throttle response and reduces the throttle lag. Well actually it gives you control over it with multiple settings. You'll love it. Hit us up at motoroso.com, or call 1.833.MOTOROSO and we'll get you a great price!
I have a 4 - Cylinder 2017 5 - Speed Manual Taco and I trying to go up a hill on 5th gear is so sad 😔 is it worth upgrading or should I rather do a trade in?
Personally I would look into a differential re-gear. When I re-geared my Jeep it solved my sluggish 5th gear issue. Not too sure if it would help in a Tacoma.
The pedal commander has an eco setting that can be used to save fuel, but for the most all the other mods will result in lower fuel economy. Nothing drastic, but a little less. As usual, the most profound effect on fuel economy is in how you use the skinny pedal on the right.

Are y'all getting the 4cylinder or v6? I just dont know which one to get. I hear the 4cylinder is build pretty good to last almost no problems but the v6 of course has the a lil more power but comes with problems. What's your take on it???
We advise getting the 6cyl. The 4cyl is underpowered. The 6cyl is too, just not as bad. The throttle module helps open either of them up, without any effect on warranty, and re-gearing will help the truck feel better as well.

Just ordered my 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport in the army green. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Whoooot! Congrats David! Here to help with mods when you're ready!
Dude thanks so much for breaking it down like this for us. Liked and subscribed as a result.
You’re welcome. Welcome to the fam!
You should include getting rid of the stock skid plate up front. There’s multiple options that include a door for the oil filter to be removed without dropping the whole skid plate. More durable and more access…can’t beat that for under $300
The factory skid plate is paper-thin. It might protect from flying pebles and small obstacles, but nothing significant.
Gearing is a must after Lift and tires anyways! Great advice...!

What about re-gearing the Tacoma for better performance? Isn't it a better option than the throttle modules?
Hey Ozzie, well "better" is definitely debatable, but here's a couple things to consider: The throttle module is a
Ozzie, you’re correct.
@@nj_tacoma6723 how much was a re-gear? I got 110k on the clock so f&@k a warranty
Did you dyno the cat-back systems?
With a manual transmission you can eliminate the first two mods with just an intake/exhaust. They have better gears from the factory and the intake helps wake up throttle response a little bit
I'm gutted I didn't get a 6MT. The auto box is truly dreadful but I'll live with it until it's time to change. Apart from that the truck is great.

What is the max lift that I can do without worrying about my cv axle or any other stuff for quicker wear and tear?
As long as you’re buying well designed and manufactured products, these manufacturers design lifts in a way that corrects geometries and you shouldn’t run into too many issues. If you just want a leveling kit, 2.5-3” max. If you get a proper suspensions lift, 6” is the most common big lift for Tacoma’s.

@@Motoroso just bought a 21 Tacoma 2 days ago! Wondering the same thing with the intake and exhaust as well as an ecu flash
possibly the throttle mod as well
@@anthonyb6521 the ECU flash definitely has warranty implications, toyota can/will know and then it comes down to whether your dealer service center is "cool" about it or not. The pedal commander is popular because it has no warranty implications. Intake and exhaust are so common, most service centers would not care about it in relation to warranty work, so you should be good there. Let us know if we can help with any specific parts!

Hello can you tell me if its safe and ok to have throttle module and a ovtune done or it's one or the other?

Yes, 100% they will work together! The OV tune will have some throttle tuning built in, but the pedal commander will allow you to tune that more precisely. The throttle modules are very simple, and don’t mess with engine tuning at all.

Do you have a before and after video of the Gibson muffler?
Soirry, we don't, we just shot the exhaust after. It was a noticeable increase in the volume and has a throaty tone to it, but not "loud" and not annoying when driving.
Wouldn’t the leveling kit throw off the TSS calibration?
If someone finds anything that explicitly states the system must be recalibrated anytime the ride height of the vehicle is changed more than 1”, we’d like to know that.
carlos martinez my 2019 tacoma is lifted 6in and the tss works just fine
I changed the position of my TSS when I swapped grill inserts. Still works fine. You can add some washers to the bolts if you need to reorient it slightly.
Does the lift kit void the warranty?
I own a 2017 toyota tacoma trd sport dbl cab long bed.
So far ive modded it with the following:
K&N 63 series high-flow intake
Tri fold tonneau cover
Avs bug deflectors
Genesis offroad dual battery kit with 2 oddyssey batteries

Hi Luis, sounds like a great build so far! Yes, Magnuson makes an awesome supercharger kit for the 3.5L Tacomas.

Did the k&n make a difference
CAI systems are nice, but just the filter helps for sure, the K&N Filter for the V6 can be bought here: www.motoroso.com/p/45270-kn-replacement-panel-air-filter-for-toyota-2014-tundra-46l57l-2014-sequoia-57l-v8?lid=1731392

If I got a trd off road would 17” rim 33” tire what would the width need to be if I want the tire to come out bout 1” from wheel flare?

Awesome, great to have you! Glad you found it helpful. Let us know if we can help with any mods.
Does Cold air intake remove the Warranty for the tacoma?
No, it's pretty common mod and shouldn't have any impact on your warranty. In many cases te filters in the CAI's are better than stock and provide more protection for the engine.
Should I look at getting an auto or manual trans TRD OffRoad Tacoma?
Thats a lot of personal prefernce. IMHO, Manual is a must in muscle cars and sports cars..... but for a truck, I opt for auto.... depends how much you love shifting those gears, and if you prefer manual for wheelin'! If you get the auto, I think you can get their terrain and crawl control features.
I have a 2020 Tacoma. I went to your site and most things are either sold out or don’t fit a 2020. What’s up with that?
Hey Gabriel, that’s probably because the fitment data associated with the products haven’t been brought up to date for the 2020 applications yet. All of our data comes from our sellers and there’s over 1M products, so it’s tough to keep up with. There’s 1,000s of products for the 3rd gen Tacoma, and we have most of them, so feel free to hit us on live chat or at 1.833.MOTOROSO, and you can put in a 2017 Tacoma and get most of the same products. We’re always happy to help confirm it will work for your 2020.
I searched up the mbrp exhaust on their website, I didn’t see the black exhaust one though
Here it is: www.motoroso.com/p/21398-mbrp-exhaust-s5338blk-black-series-cat-back-exhaust-system-fits-16-17-tacoma
Where is the link to the ecu flash / custom tune
New subscriber here, just order my 2022 SR5, chip shortage so out of stock 🤨 wow what we have come to !
Yeah, tough to get at the moment, hope the wait isn’t too long!
Good video, appreciate all the ideas. Thanks!
Glad you liked it, let us know how we can help! We've got the Pedal Commanders in STOCK, they sold out several times in 2021, but we have a few on hand right now! www.motoroso.com/p/667953-pedal-commander-lexusmitsubishisuzukitoyota-throttle-controller?lid=1698031
I'm so confused, I went to the Motoroso website and filtered a search for parts on my 2021 TRD Pro and got a heating element and temp control thermostat for appliances you'd find in your home? Also an engine lifter set which I know the 3.5L Tacoma engine doesn't have and a Ford 7 quart oil pan...
Do u need to re gear after going from 16 to 17s. I don't off road at all I got the sr5 4banger
Is it safe to have throttle mod on my manual Tacoma?
Absolutely, it just changes the throttle response and reduces the throttle lag. Well actually it gives you control over it with multiple settings. You'll love it. Hit us up at motoroso.com, or call 1.833.MOTOROSO and we'll get you a great price!
KD Max has a tune, I have it on my 2018 Tacoma
I have a 4 - Cylinder 2017 5 - Speed Manual Taco and I trying to go up a hill on 5th gear is so sad 😔 is it worth upgrading or should I rather do a trade in?
Personally I would look into a differential re-gear. When I re-geared my Jeep it solved my sluggish 5th gear issue. Not too sure if it would help in a Tacoma.
@@soundbomb101 how much money did that run you??
@@eliseocardenas1473 I'm sure huge and ridiculous amounts of money, So buy a V-6 and be done with it!
How do these mods affect the fuel performance of the truck, mpg?
The pedal commander has an eco setting that can be used to save fuel, but for the most all the other mods will result in lower fuel economy. Nothing drastic, but a little less. As usual, the most profound effect on fuel economy is in how you use the skinny pedal on the right.
hey, thx for posting this. my Taco is due for some parts love.
You're welcome Rick, glad it was helpful! We love giving parts love, so please let us know how we can help you get set up! We can be reached on live chat at motoroso.com, or toll free at 833.668.6767 (833.MOTOROSO).
I have 31.65-inch tires (265/75R16) on my Tacoma without leveling kit and NO issues... Not even close to rubbing anywhere.
Just brought a 20 TRD Sport 2WD lol why am I already looking forward to modding 🤦🏾♂️
First mod should be trading it in for a 4wd
@@GerardoMandujanobastida some of us can’t afford the 4wd
