CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clarice (Jodie Foster) navigates a dark cellar to find Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), unaware that he's watching her through infrared goggles.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this multiple Oscar-winning thriller, Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI's training academy whose shrewd analyses of serial killers lands her a special assignment: the FBI is investigating a vicious murderer nicknamed Buffalo Bill, who kills young women and then removes the skin from their bodies. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into this case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out. Lecter does indeed know something of Buffalo Bill, but his information comes with a price: in exchange for telling what he knows, he wants to be housed in a more comfortable facility. More important, he wants to speak with Clarice about her past. He skillfully digs into her psyche, forcing her to reveal her innermost traumas and putting her in a position of vulnerability when she can least afford to be weak. The film mingles the horrors of criminal acts with the psychological horrors of Lecter's slow-motion interrogation of Clarice and of her memories that emerge from it.

Love the way she realistically awkwardly reloads her gun.
YES!!! Not no perfect ass sleight of hand reload lol
When speed loaders aren't.
That is a speedloader.
It rarely shows fear, and you can see in this scene she is terrified, her hamd shaking all the time. I think it's that attention to details that makes differemce between gpod movie and masterpiece.
Dominik Yes. Made it all that more terrifying.
This was only 2 minutes long , but it felt like eternity when I watched this scene in the film
Yeah I was really surprised when I saw that it was only two minutes long. This scene builds intensity so perfectly I love it
Fr, it felt like an hour. All thanks to the build up as big balls said. They don’t make movies this good no more
very true. each moment of this scene was so heavy. my heartbeat was literally stopped as i was watching this 2 minute video.
Fr
I remember everyone in the theater was running around and screaming and crying and one lady fainted and another lady pooped her pants! It was crazy but fun, too.
When he reaches out and his hand is just inches away from her hair and face, that's the scariest part for me. He's having so much fun watching her. That's described more in the book. He's thinking about scalping her because he loves her hair. So damn creepy.
And he plans to lean into the well where Katherine is, with her scalp on, and yell, "Surprise!" Absolutely bone-chilling.
Bruh how can she not see in pitch darkness
Not to mention getting a thrill out of hunting a victim with a gun of her own.
How she didn't feel heat from his hand/body
@@Cblla she was terrified
a very terrifying situation to be in...all pitch black, cant see where you are going and knowing a serial killer is there arround you, but you cant see him...she sure did unloaded on him.

And the last thing you saw where the lights went out was some decomposed body in the bathtub.
Oh yes, Buffalo Bill fatally underestimated Clarice... she might not have been able to see him in the pitch dark after he shut off the lights, but cocking the hammer back on his huge Magnum right behind her was the last mistake he ever made - fitting that the last thing Little Billy saw was Clarice's fear and adrenaline-fueled expression as she pumped six bullets into his chest!
@@TigersAreTerrific true that.
I also wish they added bills last words into the movie as he used in the book which were "You are so beautiful".
If that scene didn't have you on the edge of your seat the first time you saw it than I don't know what will?
thats a fact
I agree?
+MaximusCactus I don't see how it could get any more terrifying than that. I mean, you're already scared to death hunting a serial killer in his own house. You charge through a door to see a decaying corpse in a tub that's been there for no telling how long, and then the power goes out??!
Had that been me? I would have been like, "Ok Billy, the jig is up, you win....lol
+Milos Pinstripe That is what a cop would normally do. It's dramatically effective to have her go there on her own but not likely.
First time I saw this scene I was about 7 years old, just happened to come across it while browsing channels. My thoughts were how cool the scene looked, and how lame the guy looked. He should have been a robot with night vision instead.
No kidding, this scene is absolutely, positively TERRIFYING!!!
I remeber watching this as a little kid with my parents and i was terrified to sleep with the lights off after watching this part
Oh no,I realized it isn't. But Bill DID get his comupunce, though.
Exactly...it's the darkness...not knowing what's in front of you and what's about to happen...it's terrifying
kingskid1985 yeah I know right
It’s finding a skinned body in the tub before going pitch black, extremely terrifying
2:00 Such a believable death scene. He's basically struggling to inhale oxygen because his lungs are collapsed and filling up with blood. Drowning on his own blood. Gruesome, but great attention to detail. And great acting on his part.
Yeah, Jonathan Demme avoided the "instant death bullet" trope/cliche.
Bravo Vince?
Lol this isn’t Breaking Bad
She should have dead checked him when she saw he was still (sort of) breathing.
@@stevepalpatine2828, she was about to “check” him with more hot lead
Yeah Clarice! Jodie Foster did a brilliant job portraying a tough, yet sensitive and intelligent detective!
Jodi Foster and Sigourney Weaver are two of the best female heroines ever on screen. I might throw in Linda Hamilton too.
Stop the Philosophical Zombies And the best thing about Ripley, Sarah Connor and Clarice Starling? They’re strong female leads and not Mary Sues like Rey or Captain Marvel.
@@LexingtonDeville984 I agree. They were believably exceptional females. There are lots of brilliant women out there that still have the nurturing, emotional side and don't have to act like men to be seen as competent or powerful. The joke of modern feminism is that they think that women need to act like men to be taken seriously (and in the meantime they try to get men to act like women to level the playing field!) Men will always be better at acting like men and women better at acting like women. Feminism is a contrived nightmare that has done *far* more harm than good.
detective? she's just a rookie
@Shard Plays Games I didn't like Atomic Blonde. The fight scenes were totally unrealistic. She would have been destroyed by those men.
The bathtub reveal was the PERFECT moment to hit the lights. A perfect way to ratchet maximum horror up to the next level.
Who was the person in the bathtub?
@@solezeta1314 I don't think we know. To me, it's implied that it's either the former house owner or just some other victim.
@@puuxexil The first one. It’s implied to be Old Mrs. Lippman, since he “took over the house when she died”

The goggles give him an bug-eyed look... an inhumane, insect kind of quality while he watches and stalks his prey like a predator.
Even though she's a highly trained FBI agent Clarice is still terrified and rightfully so in this scene making it all the more realistic and relatable.
Bruh she's still a student here which makes it even more terrifying.
The FBI said that the most unrealistic part of the movie was her going to this house alone, since she’s still a trainee. The filmmakers said that it was necessary since it’s the climax.
@@MediaLover194 yeah in actuality they would have done a raid
@@speedking7224 or in the very least she would have a partner or supervisor with her.
@@MediaLover194 yes, but I can understand why the filmmakers thought it was necessary
This. THIS.. is a strong female lead. No OP traits, no unrelatable intelligence, no quirky personality features. Just a normal woman overcoming the odds of her situation. PLEASE can we have more movies with this kind of female lead? Rather than the OP Captain Marvel type leads?

Youre comparing the lead character of a drama for adults to the lead character of a kids action movie
So this is Kill Bill
Jodie was killing bill before it was cool
no, this is kill bill.
🤣
6 rounds vs. the 5 point palm exploding heart technique. thats how you kill Bill
Sam Morris 😝
I think what saved her is that she ISNT a psychopath. At the beginning someone says something about psychopaths having a clear mind and slow pulse even while committing the worst crimes. I think the fact that she had such a tense movement and heart made her react so quickly.
It was Hannibal when he killed the nurse
«His pulse never got above 85, even when he ate her tongue»
In the theatre when the lights went out then the clicking of the goggles were heard and you could see her frightened. Everyone gasped then complete silence. You could feel the fear and tension. Same for the scene when Lecter escapes and uses the cops face over his. I was only fifteen and I was scared as hell. Such a great movie experience.
Wow - thanks for sharing … this movie was released in 1991 and so you must have really made an impression on you.
I wish I would have seen this in the theatre's!! My mom rented this movie and I saw it at home as a young child still get chills till this day.

@@hmj211 I feel that line was critical to the killer's mind. It should definitely have been left in.

I was literally just about to comment this. Was a damn good book, movie did a good job of following it but it was a mistake taking this line out
Its a damn crime that they didn't use that line!
1:27 So that's what he's thinking here before he tries to kill her
This scene alone is such a powerful testament of how good Jodie Foster is, since i'm 90% sure they didn't actually film this in the dark. To act blind, lost, afraid and like you're not looking at anything, perfectly.
yeah, what a pity she wouldnt do hannibal. some guff about horror being a bad influence for her kids - Clarice Starling saved countless lives!! she was a hero...
It wasn't filmed in the dark. You can see light streaming in.

Why are people asking how the lights came back on?
She clearly shot through a light-cancelling basement window and it's daytime, letting in those natural light rays. You can even see the dry, brown leaves outside in slow-mo once the glass is shattered by the bullet.
Thanks. I genuinely did not understand this.
Thank you!!!
@@benoitpellet1657 Np. :p
I wasn’t sure at first and then I noticed the ripped thing.
In the novel, there were womens bodies throughout the house, presumably from when bill was experimenting with preserving human flesh. If I remember correctly...he had put one of them in a tub filled with acid in the basement in order to break the body up into sludge. Just before the lights go out, Clarice has just enough time to observe the time on a watch on a wrist thats sticking out of the mess in the tub.
Wasn't it his mother?
Angry Ancestor [KbanjoK]
No, it was the house’s original owner, and Frederika Bimmel’s former boss. She’s been buried loosely in that tub for 2 years
That's facinating. I wonder how much different the book was from this awful movie. I mean it was nearly word for word. And it still sucked.
@@alg11297 "awful movie" OK lol. Feels good to be a hipster?
@@Crisyx91 Just watch any episode of "Criminal Minds". At least the tv show challenges you and the ending isn't always satisfying.
And this is the scene that ensured Jodie Foster's 2nd oscar win !
Frankly it's her most iconic role
What gets me in this scene is that when he reaches out for her he does it tenderly, almost lovingly as if covets her, just like Lector talked about earlier in the movie. So many great details in this scene. Her rapid breath, wide open eyes and shaking hand as she if chock full of adrenaline due to the "fight or flight" response. Her panicked shooting, how she shakingly reloads her revolver. Bills last blood-soaked last breaths as he dies.
Masterfully filmed and acted scene. Foster kills it here between her short gasping breaths, the shaking of her revolver as she fumbles her way in the darkness to Levine reaching his hand out to her.

Air BNB bathroom review: 0 out of 5 stars, tub was filthy 😂
Saw this in the theater, having not seen any trailers or having heard a thing about the movie, and assumed from the title it was going to be something VERY different. Let me tell you, I've never felt palpable tension from an entire theater audience like this scene ever since then, and that's got to be several hundred movies' worth.
*_The way he moved his hands before he died resembles that of an insent. Nice touch by the actor_*
The thing I love about this movie is that they don’t show what either Hannibal or Bill do to their victims. We only see the results and some clues. Leaving it all to the power of imagination.
1:26 1991, the year this movie came out, at the drive-in with my mom. Her yelling at Clarice through the windshield at the top of her lungs. Good times.
Omg her acting is so awesome. The way she shivers is so cool!
Is Thor your God?
She is a trainee, a smart trainee, but a total rookie and she knows it. The guts and commitment it took to keep going are what made this character heroic. What the author did to this character in the final book was disgusting.
When your ideal is trounced and destroyed. When the entire organization wants you to be sacked. When everyone in your organization is your enemy. During your most vulnerable state, a criminal shows you kindness. Then you will understand her character. Look at Clarice as if she's a human being, not as a heroine of a story.
Even Anthony Hopkins himself believes that the novel ending actually makes sense, although he prefers the movie ending more.
That's what Bill gets for using a single action lol.
Yandos it's a double action, but he just cocked it back for drama. That's what got him killed
The Colt Python is a double action revolver, but you have to prime it after reloading (I think)
@@ae-tn3sn Prime?
You're right about the Python being double action, but you can load and fire in double action mode all day long without using single action (thumb cocking the hammer before firing) all day long.
SenorPredo - Marine Corps for real, thats one hella massive hand gun
@@ae-tn3sn No after you load it you can shoot it double action without cocking the hammer if you choose. Cocking the hammer just gives it a really short and light trigger pull making the gun more accurate.

very good job by Ted Levine
1:03 Wow i never noticed that swastika :D
Such a short scene, but the palpable tension makes it feel like hours. Such good cinematography.
Her acting in this scene is something else, so good.
1:46 gun shadow
Perfect logic. My gratulations, Tommy!
Could be an infrared NVG.
Judging from the glare on his hand, it seems like he has an infrared light source attached to his goggles, so the gun casts a(n infrared) shadow.
Or that this scene was actually filmed with lights on and was edited in a way to make it look like it was pitch black. Tbh it just makes the acting even more impressive since she had to act like it was pitch black
NVGs don't work in total darkness (they amplify available light, but there must be some light available). Therefore, most models have a light emitter on them that can be activated. It will throw a shadow that will be picked up by the NVGs.
To my mind, the most brilliant part of this scene is the perspective. We, as viewers, watch Clarice through Buffalo Bill's eyes. So haunting, as if the director is asking us:
"What if you were like him?"
insightful 🤔
A minute and a half that felt like an eternity.
Buffalo Bill: “Ah you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!”
Clarice: "Sadly, the sound from the hammer betrays you..." Bang Bang Bang!
A beautiful banepost, purely a work of art.
CRAAWWWWLLING INNN MYYY SKINNNN

That was extremely dangerous for Clarice to try to capture him alone!

That’s an Academy Award worthy scene. What an actor. Jody Foster has always been a favorite of mine. Ever since, “The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane.”
Acting scared is not easy to do. Well done Jodie.
the moment she became a legend....
Did anyone notice the swastika at 1:03? I guess this guy is so messed up, being fascist is a minute detail of his life.
*****
I mean, jeez. Choose a side already, right?
JC Malone Swastika is a symbol of being a NAZI not a FASCIST!
+JC Malone The Silence of the Lambs was a movie based on a fictional book but the author Thomas Harris took a lot of shit from real serial killer cases. Obviously Hannibal Lecter is a made up character but cops caught real life cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer within a few months of this film's release. Buffalo Bill has been publicly acknowledged as being based on several real life murderers including Ted Bundy, Ed Gein and Gary Heidnik. But the whole Nazi symbols in Buffalo Bill's house could be been taken from the Richard Chase mass murder case in California. He killed six people to drink their blood and his house was littered with Nazi flags as well as blood splattered kitchen utensils.
firstpower100 I always just figured it was about Buffalo Bill just trying to find acceptance in with a controversial group.
There’s also a hitler poster visible on the doors down there earlier in the film
Love when a movie makes you hold your breath like this

There's probably nothing more terrifying than being trapped in a dark room with a killer stalking you in the pitch black. Jodie Foster's reaction is completely genuine. 😱😱😱😱
That final shot is one of the best things I’ve ever seen
Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling is one of my favorite movie protagonists of all time.
This film and se7en are outstanding works of art
Most people don't realize Bill actually gets a shot off but Clarice turns and it misses her and she catches the muzzle flash on her right cheek. If you look close you can see the mark after the windows break.
Wow! Such close observation. Would have _never_ noticed!
When every single thing about a movie is good, you know you're in the hands of a great director. RIP Jonathan Demme. Thank you.
I'll tell you the trick:
She has six bullets, Bill clearly knew she was there so chances are he's probably in the same room as her, or will be soon. She should have found a corner, and waited, stood still she'll be able to hear his movement. By being in a corner, she's made the possible places for Bill to be stood only a 90° frame. She fires her six bullets roughly evenly across this frame and chances are, she'll hit him.

I think this scene is what won her the OSCAR.
She's not actually in the dark (I know, duh) but she totally sells it.
This and her "Lambs... they were screaming."

He didn't even need the night vision goggles, her loud heavy breathing would've given it away
Yeah, I'm sure the guy would have been like: "Well, I have this night vision here, but let me just follow my ear and shoot her perfectly based on her breathing, even though I know she also has a gun and can kill me if I miss."
Walking into a strange house with no backup would get you bounced from the FBI in a heartbeat.
