    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clarice (Jodie Foster) has a growing suspicion that the caretaker of Mrs. Lippman's house (Ted Levine) is the long-sought killer Buffalo Bill.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this multiple Oscar-winning thriller, Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI's training academy whose shrewd analyses of serial killers lands her a special assignment: the FBI is investigating a vicious murderer nicknamed Buffalo Bill, who kills young women and then removes the skin from their bodies. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into this case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out. Lecter does indeed know something of Buffalo Bill, but his information comes with a price: in exchange for telling what he knows, he wants to be housed in a more comfortable facility. More important, he wants to speak with Clarice about her past. He skillfully digs into her psyche, forcing her to reveal her innermost traumas and putting her in a position of vulnerability when she can least afford to be weak. The film mingles the horrors of criminal acts with the psychological horrors of Lecter's slow-motion interrogation of Clarice and of her memories that emerge from it.

      Yep, I caught that, too.
It makes her human, not some unbelievable "badass" Mary Sue, and it really is a nice touch.
Also, when she kills Buffalo Bill, you'll notice that she flinches with each muzzle blast, another sign of a rookie shooter, even though she was fortunate by putting all six rounds into him.
She also fumbles a bit with her speedloader for the reload immediately afterward.

@Paulo Hernanndizz Actually, she should have practiced her draw, particularly from a concealed holster. She was damned lucky she didn't fumble and drop the gun. If she had, Gumm could've grabbed his gun and it would've been curtains for her.

That’s one of the many things that made her so great in this. Other actresses would be acting like Charlie’s Angels which would not have been realistic. Reality is she would’ve been trembling which is what she was doing in this scene.

Luke Eriksson actually, technically, psychopaths aren't considered insane, at least in the clinical (DSM) sense of the word; they're not considered to suffer from psychoses. Psychopathy lies - as scary as this sounds - on the spectrum of personality disorders, although there's some debate about whether or not it should be considered its own distinct disorder or if it is in fact an intermingling of elements from several other disorders.

What I find really terrifying is that she knew before she knew. As she’s walking in, she’s asking seemingly routine questions, but her expression is one of anxiety and fear. That moment is a microcosm of her struggle at large. A man (Crawford) had told her that Jame Gumb was thousands of miles away, effectively compelling her to suppress her instincts. A deeper, more intuitive part of Clarice knew that she was in the presence of evil way before that moth landed. And Jodie Foster captures all of it. I love the film.

The reason he smirks when she asks for the phone is because in a scene right before this, the girl that he has captive in the basement was begging for the phone to also call for help.
In that moment, he no longer sees Clarice as an authority figure but as yet another weak little woman that he could easily make his victim, and whose only hope is to call other men for help.
This view of powerlessness is so ingrained that he seems to pretty much disregard her pointing a loaded gun at him.
This entire movie deals with gender and power in such a brilliantly subtle and nontoxic way, especially compared to today's bullshit Hollywood feminism.

No you don’t understand the point, if anything the way she portrayed clarice is the most realistic portrayal of a strong female character all around. She has the mental fortitude but also the vulnerability that would be natural in any human given the situation. She is not over the top like most female “strong character” are portrayed in today’s cinema. Over the top, thinks they are just as good as anyone, giving off a spiel of being an independent woman all the while being stoic and humorless because god forbid she shows any other emotion. Clarice doesn’t need to prove all that to be a strong female character, we know she is, her ability to overcome adversity in sprite of her fears and heartaches she keeps going forward. She is relatable and realistic, her emotions doesn't diminish her strength. She knows what she is up against, the room where she is surrounded by all male police officers as they look down on her, she knows that she is a woman in a male dominated profession, she doesn’t need to make a huge statement about it, she lets her actions speaks for themselves.

Right as he asks wether the FBI got any finger prints or after he stands with the business card waiting for her to get closer to grab it, with the moth coming out of the kitchen just backing up what Clarice already had confirmed with the rolls, it would've been Hitchokian in that we know that they both know they know 😂 yet neither of them knows what's about to go down.

This scene is absolutely insane. One of the best and most underrated scenes in cinema IMO. From the way the camera pans around the area to show Clarice's isolation from everyone, to the close up shots of her realisation, to when we see her fumble when she draws her gun at Bill. This scene has been crafted so well to create and install fear in not only us, but Clarice as well. (Also the score really emphasises the moment, this movie has an incredible score). Amazing acting from Jodie Foster and Ted Levine, I honestly couldn't see any other actress and actor playing those roles.
