@@beto1580 Blake used to blast beat a lot on older BTBAM records, as well as the old Glass Casket stuff haha But these days, he's so good, so tasteful.
it fucks me up watching matt play this song because I'm still in that awkward kinda-sorta learning theory phase as a musician so I'm sitting here like "what the fuck how do I count this". like they asked matt to fill in a minute of the song and he was like "yeah one sec lemme warm up" and nolly was like ctrl+r when he sat behind the kit goddamn I love periphery
Yea to me that's the hardest part of the song by a mile. Like I thought about learning it and know a couple of the beats but I just know that part alone might take me a month at least That's why I focus on his easier stuff like 22 faces, blood eagle, or flatline which sound hard to a layman but they're actually super easy (for periphery songs)
When the people from Meinl designed this Meinl shirt they took into consideration that the symbol on the front was low enough so Halpern could cut his V-neck properly. True story
Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemuhwem Osas he probably has a press where he puts a shirt in it and then it makes a deep v neck for any shirt. Makes it as precise as possible. Or maybe he made it uneven so he had to keep cutting it further and further down until he got it right
Is this a different version of Ragnarok? Right before the second part of the song there's a vocal line by Spencer I've never heard before. "There's nothing left inside"
Almighty RS In the one from the album he's screaming it quietly instead of freaky-frog voice haha. Yeah maybe it was an original idea that they cut? It was so loud haha I was like "what." Other than that it's the same version it sounded like
It's probably the original version but with drums taken out and mixed differently. Periphery did record, mix, master, and produce that album themselves.
He is the Chad Smith of his genre. I absolutely adore the skills Matt displays and he can do it all. He's absolutely in the top tier of drummer's still on earth and absolutely one of the best of all time IMO...
Me too.. Even on the album you can hear the ghost notes and when he smacks on it, it stops sounding like a snare drum and starts sounding like a shotgun 🥁🤘
I like this Snare-Sounds with Crack, not these deep flat lowend snare drums everyone uses today. They sound so boring :) Greatest Snare-Sound? Rammstein - "Rosenrot" The Snare seems to sound great, but it doesnt fix to the rest of the kit mixwise...
YouthDrummer the last festival was kind of a special occasion because Meinl had an anniversary. so they gave it more attention and you can see it in the line up. 2015 got an all star line up and 2016 was okay. hence why the production level wasn't as high.
Sweet kit. But I will never understand players with that many cymbals and toms aren't using a rack. I would go insane if everything was wobbling like that on my kit.
The snare is just mic'd in an odd way I think. Waaay too much drum tone, not enough snare sound, combined with an un-periphery sounding EQ, I would guess.
You should probably look up the tabs to this song, to see how wrong you are. Also, of course he's going to space, it's prog, so his playing is more out there, and intended to be a little dissonant.
That drum kit is as stable as my future.
Hahahahah......This comment cracked me up
So very unstable? But that's s compliment because this video was sick
he should be using a rack, wouldnt get all that movement
@@lincthomas7178 it’s the stage not the lack of rack.
@@SaltyDogPerformance r U sure
If a cymbal isn't moving, hit it 😂
hit them all, juat to be safe.
kodiak wild ...with one swing of a stick!
Old joke, doesn't really apply to this video
If the whole kit isn’t bouncing.. Play it.. 👍
Ethan Carlson lol it's gives it a more full sound
so glad a good part of metal moved away from just blast beats and fast fills in every song into something worth listening to
ne obliviscaris is a very good band, but the drummer does blast beats almost every time and it annoys me
TheUtgardian Channel Not all the time Matt Griener did more blast beats than matt halrpen
Guys like Matt Halpern and Blake Richardson really changed the game...
idk, my love for blast beats is the same for gospel chops and other stuff like Matt does in this video, it's all awesome drumming for me hahaha
@@beto1580 Blake used to blast beat a lot on older BTBAM records, as well as the old Glass Casket stuff haha

Matt: *plays incredibly then stops*
Crowd: ok
1:00-1:51 was like a 50-second-long drum fill that I didn't want to end. The way he weaves those toms and snare hits into the music is hypnotic. Wow.
it fucks me up watching matt play this song because I'm still in that awkward kinda-sorta learning theory phase as a musician so I'm sitting here like "what the fuck how do I count this". like they asked matt to fill in a minute of the song and he was like "yeah one sec lemme warm up" and nolly was like ctrl+r when he sat behind the kit

Yes!!! That 20" China sounds amazing!
Fuck yeah it does. Was thinking the same thing.
Yea it's a really great sounding china. I'm glad I have it on my GGD kit (it's Matt's kit lol)
All of the cymbals are dancin' around ..
Matt's mouth is open all the time hahaha happy djentleman .. What a beast.
Misha told him if a cymbal ever stops moving he's fired
Gah, that whole kit sounds amazing. This captured matt so well!
When the people from Meinl designed this Meinl shirt they took into consideration that the symbol on the front was low enough so Halpern could cut his V-neck properly. True story
'the man who can break 3 cymbals in 1 swing of a stick'
OG Periphery fans understand
They were good old times
Also cuz of jake and his 7 strings of wonder
I understood that reference.gif
Ragtime Dandies!!!
The finish on those drums are soooo sick!
DId Meinl make a V-neck just for him?
Two options, he made it himself since he has a clothing line or he took a regular Meinl tshirt and cut the neck into a v-neck haha
Gives Ben Stiller's v-neck a run for his money
Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemuhwem Osas he probably has a press where he puts a shirt in it and then it makes a deep v neck for any shirt. Makes it as precise as possible. Or maybe he made it uneven so he had to keep cutting it further and further down until he got it right

DandelionVolta wait... he has a clothing line? Nobody told me this
1:49 i love how full he makes this part sound.
3:17 and you gotta love the transition into this. brings a tear to the eye
That song is incredible. Probably my favourite from that album
I absolutely love this setup. Adds a whole different dimension to his playing
Dude...This is all I've been listening to while I work. So good.
He always makes metal look smooth as butter.
It's crazy. I could play for another 10 years learn every periphery song and never be able to make it look anywhere near that easy. He's too good
Is this a different version of Ragnarok? Right before the second part of the song there's a vocal line by Spencer I've never heard before. "There's nothing left inside"
2:08 I wonder if it's just mixed differently so that part stands out. I'm going to go listen to the original to see if you can hear it.
Yeah you are right. Maybe it's a demo version of the song and the final got changed.
Cameron Alidor Taylor Larson did Periphery 2. They had a hand in the production but they didn't mix it themselves.
I feel so exhausted just watching him playing this.
Matt's is the reason I am making faces like him while playing drums.
I'm trying to learn from and emulate Matt as much as i can, but that's the one way I'm all set 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 no thanks
He is the Chad Smith of his genre. I absolutely adore the skills Matt displays and he can do it all. He's absolutely in the top tier of drummer's still on earth and absolutely one of the best of all time IMO...
Not only does he nail this, he adds so much flair
YAAAAAAAAAA I AM CHEERING CUZ THAT WAS DIRTY!!!! Go Matt!!!!!
one of the best drummers in the world!!
Finally, a band where you actually want to watch the drummer (Mark’s pretty fun to watch too though)
Great for Matt! We wait Gartska for the new album of AAL, i wanna see Arithmophobia.
Aw Mk The new album is already out
apparently im one of a very small handful of commenters who actually really likes the snare
Me too.. Even on the album you can hear the ghost notes and when he smacks on it, it stops sounding like a snare drum and starts sounding like a shotgun 🥁🤘
The snare sounds dark compared to the rest of the Kit, but I think it sounds awesome.
BEAUTIFUL!!!
That snare sounds so goddamn incredible.
This guy puts drum solos to music! F'n monster!
Everything about this video is alpha.
He's a genius
woa, i've seen you in another comment section but i can't remember where. i think it was victor borba😶😯
@@guylumalfaro3176 thirsty much?
The man knows how to hit a cymbal...
AMAZING!
Jesus, what an absolute beast.
To everyone that doesn’t get goosebumps watching this you are not a metaler, this man / band fucking rocks
idk why everyone hates the snare I think it sounds great its just my taste
Brandon Drums I agree
Brandon Drums it sounds amazing
probably because his snare usually sounds beast
Sounds pretty Dry and responsive. Pretty Decent IMO
The Snare Sounds amazing imo.
So much Attack and Punch but also with Overtones to give The Sound some character 😍
He's a beast genius.
Flawless victory!
Uh...amazing!!
He went ham on the cymbals 😂
That snare is to DIE for
He reminds of a more technical Chad smith
will ferrell*
The patterns and rhythms in the song are fuckin awesome 👌
BAYDUH!!!!
insane!!
How does he remember that rhythm from 1:03. Any ideas? How do you count it?
If he hits one more cymbal😤😤
That snare sound is damn awesome!!!
Am I the only one who sort of doesn't mind that snare? ;)
Except for the snare the drums sound incredible and crystal clear
yeah the snare doesnt fit the djent style
I think the snare is tuned for their most recent album. They had a different one for this album :) sounds amazing anyways.
his left foot is so consistent keeping up with the beat. fucking insane
2.:22 onwards love it😍😘🤗
The signature V-Neck shirt.
Jesus Christ o.O i think love this guy so much.
Did Matt just play 2 songs on this festival?. I need more vids like this!!
(like Matt Garstka's Meinl Drum Fest videos. There are 4 of them)
More cymbal!
I don't think I've seen Matt using another floor tom to the left of the hi hat.
Still love this video. You can see Matt’s “kid in the candy store” look because he was probably playing a 3 piece kit the night before
Loosey Goosey!!
What a classic
It's like two ropes with sticks attached at the end that just flow around the kit on time.
Somebody call the showrunners of Most Haunted. There's so many ghost notes the snare is the spookiest thing they'll ever see!
RAGNAROK:The event where the Gods sacrifice themselves to restore order to the universe.
I can't for the life of me figure out how he's able to play with his cymbals swinging all over the place!
god of ghost notes right here!
(and v necks)
The V-neck is so deep, there's barely enough room for the logo!
Maybe attach the snare wires next time.....great drumming though
you ever heard a snare without snare wire ?
What was that vocal at 4:08?? Did they re record Ragnarok??
I really screwed the pooch on that one. I meant 2:08
jalen roark why are you fucking dogs?
Michael Blatter Your comment reminded me of Borat lol
Almighty RS there is a really funny bit about "screwing the pooch" on the Michael Che comedy special on Netflix.
Woah at the end did he use the Chinese flag as a rag?
I like this Snare-Sounds with Crack, not these deep flat lowend snare drums everyone uses today. They sound so boring :)
Greatest Snare-Sound? Rammstein - "Rosenrot"
The Snare seems to sound great, but it doesnt fix to the rest of the kit mixwise...
Rammstein's drummer uses Tama Starclassics. that Bubinga...
Other note worthy drum sounds are Black Clouds and Silver Linings by Dream Theater, Faceless by God smack and The Way of all Flesh by Gojira!
Last festival was soooo well recorded, what happened with this one?
YouthDrummer the last festival was kind of a special occasion because Meinl had an anniversary. so they gave it more attention and you can see it in the line up. 2015 got an all star line up and 2016 was okay. hence why the production level wasn't as high.
i smashed the fuck outta the alike button
What's that snare drum? Sounds great.
i think it was his own signature snare, mapex black panther wraith i suppose
Alan Kapołka it's his maypex snair
The Wyverns on Ragnarok of ark survival evolved are pretty dope when you can find 104 egg's or higher
Someone: “Cymbal felts”
Matt: *No*
MONSTER
Halpern or Garstka?
garstka
no disrespect
Seva Kovarsky Halpern. More groove

Matt!
So Groovy
This should have been the soundtrack fot Thor ragnarok 3:21
Dat China is killin
what's with the creepy "Theres nothing left inside" being so exaggerated in this video?

Sweet kit. But I will never understand players with that many cymbals and toms aren't using a rack. I would go insane if everything was wobbling like that on my kit.

Wtf happend to the snare sound, that is aweful... No snare wires, dry, no punch...?!?
This is how snare normally sounds like.
The snare is just mic'd in an odd way I think. Waaay too much drum tone, not enough snare sound, combined with an un-periphery sounding EQ, I would guess.
Is it fair to say it's not fair to be a drummer and be like 8 feet tall lol?! Being really good helps too I guess...
holy shit that snare ruins this entire video..
Elias Hedlin I love it
your comment ruined this video
Thought the exact same thing. Sounds like he's beating on a hollow tree trunk.
Elias Hedlin your insane
I love periphery but I hate their vocals. I could listen to their music as instrumentals all day.
Matt's "ghost notes" are other drummers normal hits.
