At 5:12 - when he accents “WE COME FOR WAR” is the biggest unison with cymbals I’ve ever heard in a song to support the lyrics Spence sings. Pure freaking GENIUS.
the fact that he plays LKK patterns across the kit, instead of consistent 16th note triplet kicks, FLAWLESSLY... what a compensation man, love this dudes drumming!
Not try to say this is not impressive but I am pretty sure this is more of a volume consistency thing. LKK is way way way easier to keep everything decently loud, than just try to slam all the sextuplet kicks like a VST plugin would do. Like for the song The Price Is Wrong, Matt plays blast beat on a left side floor tom and does back beat snare using right hand, instead of doing 220 sixteenths all with his feet. Filling toms in is just so much easier for live (if you still want the recorded bass drum).
Man His grooves are so unique and solid. I've really enjoyed watching him dominate on the kit. Guitar was the first instrument I leaned yet I love watching these drum videos over guitar playthrough's.
It’s always an absolute pleasure to watch Matt play. He’s somehow both fluid yet intentional with his movement around the set, and his arrangements are always so groovy and complimentary to the song without overshadowing the vocal and other instrumental performances. Most other drummers make beats; this man is a composer, and his set is his orchestra. Easily my favorite drummer to watch and a true inspiration to an aspiring drummer.
and it also makes you appreciate the rhythms of the vocals they wrote over the track that perfectly compliment it... i couldnt even imagine coming up with such different vocal rhythms just by listening to this but they did it so perfectly
He's really sick with those patterns! I think he means the constant 16ths/32nds! He always replaces those parts with a bit of low Tom instead on any of the songs with those parts! I actually think it sounds cooler anyway but I guess that's what he means maybe? Anyway such a sick playthrough!
Here’s the thing about professional musicians “weaknesses” vs an amateur’s weaknesses: a pro will work hard to overcome them to the point that said weakness almost becomes a strength. An amateur lies down and accepts their weakness, never getting any better because they don’t believe they can.
Meinl produces one of the best cymbals! That china is very crispy 👌 well done!! And the most important part is it is played by the most talented drummer....sad part he has no V-neck on 😅🤘
Its crazy that matt says his "feet are terrible" but his kicks are so clean i wish he'd give himself more credit hes a fantastic drummer not everyone is perfect 🤙
Is he augmenting the kick with the floor Tom at 1:05 to 1:25? I Was always wondering how he would come in with such a fast double Bass lick out of nowhere. Very nice!!
As one mentioned above, he does this to avoid playing sloppily during those quick dotted 16th note double bass patterns. It's enduring for many, and he is by no means considered amongst some of the fastest drummers out there. What he makes up for that with is groove, pocket, and a large variety of styles that he can play with ease. He looks as if he comes from a jazz background.
1. I had to go back and listen to the original to hear if you were doing those crazy fills at 1:01 in the actual track or just for this video 2. Going from the half time to regular time and the very end was fucking sick as shit
The actual cymbals Matt used in this video are for sale now at bentleysdrumshop.com/collections/matt-halpern-meinl-cymbals-collection
I swear being called Matt makes you immediately great at the drums
gotta change my name!!
Also Mike is a good name hahaha
Halpern &
Gartzska &
Mingus &
Cameron (the OG of odd time in rock music)
GREINER
Don't forget McDonough too
shoutout to meinl for not only making the best cymbals, but producing awesome playthroughs like this with their incredible artists ❤️
Thanks Steve! Our artists deserve the love!
@@meinlcymbals seriously, pure gold
I remember several years ago when Matt said he was struggling to learn double bass for new Periphery songs....well done, brother.
I always think of that when I see him playing the material from P3 and P4.. He mentioned it on the production process of P3 if I'm not mistaken
Actually I don't know why Matt said this, cause just remember zyglorox intro for example or insomnia, this 2 pretty have pretty hard kick parts
@@prokopdjentulove not sure but I don’t think Matt was the drummer for p1….
@@benjisbikes8182 He was, just recorded the parts on an electric kit
It’s crazy that he just keeps getting better with every album
At 5:12 - when he accents “WE COME FOR WAR” is the biggest unison with cymbals I’ve ever heard in a song to support the lyrics Spence sings. Pure freaking GENIUS.
You just gotta love Matt’s vibe. Most drummers would be looking straight up constipated playing something like this, and he’s just chillin.
I like instrumental Periphery. I can hear and appreciate all the nuances.
the fact that he plays LKK patterns across the kit, instead of consistent 16th note triplet kicks, FLAWLESSLY... what a compensation man, love this dudes drumming!
Yeah that kind of stuff is what separates him from a lot of metal drummers

Matt just has such a unique groovy style that compliments Periphery so well and is rare in metal

SOOOO many kick hits.....Another killer play through Matt. Thank you Meinl for producing these great videos. Nolly mixing like a god as always
That's a very nice sounding crash/ride 😁 can't wait to hear more about it!
Yoooooo, funny running into you here. Hope you're having a great day whenever you read this
@@joshuasplural SAME BUT FROM THE FUTURE
I appreciate you guys leaving some of the imperfections in this recording. as a player it gives me hope.
Chad Smith of metal, so groovy 🔥
I also thought of Chad Smith for some weird reason while watching this.
Backward hat half time hard rock swingers is the name of my orgy cult
They’re both very large people who often wear baseball caps and play the pedal hat. Wait, Chad’s not with Pearl anymore😔
Yeah, i think 😅
Not having the vocals makes me appreciate how well they're written rhythmically.
and it also makes you appreciate the rhythms of the vocals they wrote over the track that perfectly compliment it... i couldnt even imagine coming up with such different vocal rhythms just by listening to this but they did it so perfectly
I interned in this studio around the end of 2019 and now I'm sad I wasn't there when this was recorded 😂
No offense to Spencer - but this is by far my preferred way to listen to Periphery, going back to the Travis days.
That Crash-Ride sounding huge as always!
As much as I love this song, Matt KILLED IT on their new song WildFire, it's SOOOOOOO good!
Matt got the best grooves in modern metal
Wow. Never noticed the fullness of the cray going on in some of these here parts. Matt is a man amongst men. Meinl will make you a better drummer!
Drummers named Matt are some of the best. Matt Gartska, Matt Greiner and of course Matt Halpern.
What a freak of nature on the kit. This is incredible!
I would love to see a camera angle of just the footwork on this song. Killer playthrough!
Matt Halpern: "I'm not really good at double bass, it's one of my weaknesses"
Also Matt Halpern
LMAO right?
He's really sick with those patterns! I think he means the constant 16ths/32nds! He always replaces those parts with a bit of low Tom instead on any of the songs with those parts! I actually think it sounds cooler anyway but I guess that's what he means maybe? Anyway such a sick playthrough!

3:28 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love so much that crash-ride. I love Meinl 😅 💛
And Matt Halpern its a MASTER 🔥🔥
I've been with periphery from the start and this track is their best work.
The entire mix sounds amazing!! Meinl always has had the best play throughs out there and Matt’s ride sounds INSANE🔥
Love these playthroughs, but PLEASE MORE FOOT CAMS!
Thanks MEINL for taking out the vocals and overall excellent mix!
Let's gooo! Those cymbals sound fantastic
I just saw Vikings and the episode 'blood eagle', now I understand what this song actually is !
I remember hearing this live for the first time when they were touring with DGD. Can't wait to see and hear Matt live agian!
Love his style, very groovy and flow like water
Matt's facial expressions always got me
I have been waiting for this playthrough!!!!
Man I’ve been waiting to see Matt play this in studio ever since P4 came out and he did a play through of Garden In The Bones.
i love that Nolly backed himself off to let Matt's kick to be upfront.
I was lucky enough to see this dude when Periphery came to Buffalo NY a few years ago with Norma Jean and Contortionist 🔥🤘🏾
I was there too! Such a sick line up
Matts dynamics are next level
Meinl produces one of the best cymbals! That china is very crispy 👌 well done!! And the most important part is it is played by the most talented drummer....sad part he has no V-neck on 😅🤘
Listen, if you have Matt in your name, you're destined to rival the drum gods of past and ascend to Drum Valhalla.
2022 is all about Matts and drums
That extra thin hammered crash is MONEY. Don't play drums but hope we get that in a GGD pack at some point.
Ohhhhh yeahhh!!! I was waiting for this one. Amazing as always
After watching Matt Gartska, now Matt Halpern..🔥🔥
Its crazy that matt says his "feet are terrible" but his kicks are so clean i wish he'd give himself more credit hes a fantastic drummer not everyone is perfect 🤙
Matt is so good and his shirt is hilarious.
Nice job matt
Matt Halpern has just as good as chops than the rest of them credit when credit's due nice job Matt.
This playthrough should sound better with a V neck. But... this will do.
Absolutely insane performance!
Excelent drummer ! Periphery !!! 🤗👏🎶🤘🥁🔥
Perfect as all the time 🤘
I need to know where I can get that shirt!!! I've seen so many hilarious metal parody shirts on these guys and I need them
Can recognize that snare mix by Nolly anytime :D Great playthrough, would have loved to see a footcam as well but I'll take what I can get
always good matt periphery
always heavy and groovy!!
the beat switch at around 1:37 is just so damn groovy and then it gets even groovier at 1:53
Love watching these. I don’t play drums but appreciate the talent 🤘🏻
Matt Halpern is a beast!!
The GOAT being a G.O.A.T
I tell it everywhere a see new Matt: that’s not Matt, that is his clone. Because where is v-neck?😅awesome as usual🤟🏻
Dude hits so fuckin hard.
One of the most dirtiest and sickest riff with the sickest drumming on it! 🔥🔥🔥
О, в концовке смена на ускорение кайф, ну всё как всегда кайфно!
Petition to make drum playthrough uploads under 50fps illegal.
Nonsense
Brutal !! 💯
Meinl cymbals my favorite 🙌🙌🔥🔥🔥🤟🤟
Meinl let’s get more kick pedal camera views on Halpern.
Wonderful! Is it just me or does it sound like the OH's are sidechained (or automated I guess) to make room for the floor tom?
Just sounds like there's some heavy bus compression going on to me. Sounds killer whatever it is that Nolly did
I thought the v neck is what gave him his drumming powers....i guess I was wrong....could it be the backwards hat?
Amazing amazing composition
My brain: the cymbals are way too loud in the mix
Also my brain: oh wait hes doing the playthrough for the cymbal company of course they’re too loud
Is he augmenting the kick with the floor Tom at 1:05 to 1:25? I Was always wondering how he would come in with such a fast double Bass lick out of nowhere. Very nice!!
I reckon he has trouble playing those kicks that fast, so he came up with a way to make his life a little easier untill he gets the speed down :)
He looks as if he comes from a jazz background.
when's that awesome crash/ride gonna be released?
Dudes got some of the best drum faces lol
God this song goes hard.
BEAST MODE
This guy should start a band.
I agree he really should.
Idk what it is about him but Matt Halpern has real estate agent / middle manager vibes. INSANE drumming though.
crushing
I know I know , it's a drum playthrough . But i need the voice of Spencer.
Sick! 🤘
It's funny, you'd think the fast double bass stuff is the hardest part but I nailed almost all of it first try. It's 2:50 I'm struggling with
I'm p sure Matt recorded the drums for this album 5 blocks away from where I live in Baltimore. I am very cool for knowing this.
Yea he did back in winter 2018/ 2019...
Incredible
where's that signature Halpern deep V-neck?
1. I had to go back and listen to the original to hear if you were doing those crazy fills at 1:01 in the actual track or just for this video
2. Going from the half time to regular time and the very end was fucking sick as shit
I wish I could play double bass like that. Goddamn.
Was wondering why the cymbals were so high in the mix…Cymbals play through 😉
You know it's a Getgood mix from the first snare hit
Sick playthrough, but where do I get that awesome croissant shirt?
When’s that crash ride coming out 🤤🤤
somebod y got info about new periphery album ?? it's been a while and i cant wait for new material !!
check their instagram, they've been posting some crazy stuff as of late
I want to know where he got that shirt
It would be great to have a window inset to watch the feet too!
So them drums are tracked for P5 right? 🤞
what a fucking beast.....
