- Matt Halpern just dropped this killer video that he recently filmed. Here he is playing his band Periphery's "22 Faces." Matt's Meinl Cymbal set up, from left to right, if sitting behind the kit, is as follows:
- 15" Byzance Traditional Hi-Hats
- 8" ByzanceTraditional Splash
- 18" Byzance Traditional Medium Crash
- 22" Byzance Symmetry Ride
- 18" Byzance Traditional Extra Thin Hammered Crash
- Stack consisting of 18" Byzance Dark China on bottom
w/ 17" Byzance Jazz Medium Thin Crash on top
- 20" Byzance Extra Dry China
Matt says:
"I thought it was about time to record some high-quality video playthroughs of a few Periphery songs. This one in particular is a song off of our newest release, Juggernaut: Alpha, entitled "22 Faces."
Thank you to my friend and fellow Meinl Cymbal artist, Anup Sastry for allowing me to film in his home studio. We had a blast putting this together, and there are more video playthroughs to come!
Drums engineered by Adam "Nolly" Getgood and Anup Sastry
Mixed by Adam "Nolly" Getgood without the use of sample augmentation or replacement.
Filmed and directed by Alex "PressPlay" Wohleber.
Drums used in this play-through are Mapex Saturn IV models, with the exception of the kick drum, which is a Mapex Saturn model. I'm also using my Mapex signature Wraith snare drum in this video.
For those interested, the mics used on the kit were:
Kick - Shure Beta 91A (inside), AKG D112 (outside)
Snare - Shure Beta 57A (top), Shure SM57 (bottoms)
Toms - Josephson E22S
Overheads - AKG C414
Hi-hat/ride spots - Shure Beta 98DS
Hallway room mics - Shure SM81

give that ride some loving
I like how he plays all of the cymbals instead of staying on just one. He's never really hitting the same cymbal for more than 10 seconds. A lot better than those drummers who have a huge 12 piece kit with 20 cymbals and they only play 1/6 of it. Rock on man!
They all make diffrent tones but great observations tho still
that ride looks delicious
I love his playing. Such power and passion. Very explosive.
Thanks MEINL Cymbals Matt is so fun to watch
Very cool Mat. You make it look easy because of your seamless style. It's like watching music that has arms and legs. Take care bro.
At first in was like hell ya this channel stepped up their sound quality game...... Then I read the description.
Love it
I'd like to see Matt Halpern and Travis Orbin have a drum-off...that would be a great learning experience and downright COOL.
Dig your grooves Matt!
He goes "yeaa..ah" everytime he hits the snare. sweet drumming.
he sure loves his cymbals
This was killer
what happened to the version on Matt's channel? all his vids are gone
Sounds so much more heavier without vocals
actually he put more than 22 different faces
Anup Sastry Studio Right ? :D
Irhuelz TV Well, the room looks identical. So either that's Sastry's place or some very similar place somewhere :D
Irhuelz TV It is Anup's studio! You can even see Anup's Tama kit hanging around at the background at 0:05 haha
Irhuelz TV his studio is fken goals..
Awesome playing. Hes got it down tight. It's weird how he doesn't use felts on his crashes though.... Personally i hate when any of my cymbals are crazy loose like that
Ikr? Same dude.
He hits hard so the looser they are the more likely they won't break
Nick Wille I do the same thing. I let them loose and free. they last longer that way! Especially playing high velocity like this. What is driving me nuts is that i'm seeing no plastic sleeves on the stands for the crashes!
cymbal lover
Does anyone know if he has hair or is bald?
Great to see him to play on a full kit and not just a kit with floor toms, I never understood limiting yourself to just floor toms.
Mark Duffy I never saw that as limiting him, dude shreds just as hard on a 3 piece kit as he does on a full kit. The small kit stuff really brought out a lot of creativity, using the most out of nothing. nahwhaimsayin?
Mark Duffy having less of a kit kinda forces you to be more creative
burnthedead13 not that i disagree at all, but y is that?
well honestly i dont know lol but the logic makes sense i've always been a less is more guy
burnthedead13
I've always kinda gradually built my set up and taken stuff away and then repeat haha. I haven't had more than one rack tom in years though.
Am I just now realizing anups tama on that rack in front of Matt
I think all of the members of periphery are robot creations of misha.
i lold
Is that just orange tape for muffling? What is he using, interesting that its not moon gel. Anyone know what that is?
Just some orange tape
lol, 5 dislikes, those ppl must not have a face!
does matt ever not wear a v-neck. haha

O_O... al fin Matt con mas de 3 tambores
so much better without vocals, killer performance!
In my opinion ghost notes don't fit heavy metal music.
Good thing it's not heavy metal
It's unfortunate that you would choose to limit yourself like that.
josephz1103 Well let's call it metal then. :P
No, let's call it music
MarkChiassonDrums That doesn't change my opinion.
