My favorite aspect about Matt Halpern is that his playing style feels completely organic and unquantized. There's a rawness and honesty that he plays with I really respect. This is not to say he's a loose player whatsoever, but that he has a feel that can't be replicated.
Agreed. I believe the current drum meta is a bunch of pretentious try-hard pocket nazis. They try too hard to play "in the pocket". It's like walking down the street but you're trying as hard as you can to walk with swag. It's almost counterproductive. Nah man just walk. Yeah practice that precision in the practice room. But when you play, just let it go and be yourself. This is how I think Matt Halpern is playing in this video. He looks and sounds so comfortable and natural. Only exerting extra effort for the sake of fun and expression and not for the sake of calculated precision.
There's something really magical about how Matt plays these straight-ahead 4/4 grooves. Some of it is note selection, some of it is those great Meinl hi-hat cymbals, but mostly he just makes you really believe in what he's playing.
@@Farrahtinsley218 I mean there probably is a fundamental groove he’s playing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of his playing does have some amount of improv built in with where he places certain notes
@@binobones That's... dynamics... period? How am I just 25 years old but been playing for 17 years... lol Also harmonics, as in getting the harmonics of the cymbal out by hitting the side in itself.
I end up listening to anything Halpern has put drums to with an ear-to-ear grin, and constant headbob on that pulse. The pulse that always comes through.
Whoa, holy moly. Matt Halpern, no clue who you are, but I will find out now! AMAZING Jesus, I have to add, I love seeing the passion through your body while you play. This is great
Would love to see drumeo bring Halpern to the "X Drummer Hears This Song for the First Time." I'd love to see which song they choose for him, and what he'd play to it! He's the best!!1!
you could probably put a face cam on this man, and have a very entertaining video to watch, considering all the timed movements he does with his head during the kicks/ snares.
Is this giving anyone else big Liquid Tension Experiment vibes? Matt's style is not too similar to Mike Portnoy's, but the piano/metal fusion definitely reminds me of LTE.
You should definitely check out Arch Echo then if you haven't already, they've got a pretty similar vibe to this (after all, Joey Izzo is their keyboardist).
The actual cymbals Matt used in this video are for sale now at bentleysdrumshop.com/collections/matt-halpern-meinl-cymbals-collection
That's cool... but they're not signed?! I'm confused.
how about that pocket, is that for sale?

I agree tbh
He plays parts that were previously programmed. Making unquantized funny. Still good.
@@HectorLopez-ky1tf makes it feel human lol

It almost seems like he's improvising but I guarantee he isn't. Such good feel

Love the playing at the beginning, these kinds of lights touchs on the crash cymbals and the hi hat sounds really great
At the same time, showing off the characteristic of the cymbals. No wonder they got Matt performing for them 😂🔥

Guys, there we have the stuntman of Matt Halpern.
He isn't using a v-neck
he only wears them when he plays with Periphery. or as i like to call it... Peripher-V.
Always love watching matt play

one of my favorite drummers of all time such a master. An expert blend of technique and feel.
OMG, I wish this was on Spotify
Gonna need you to release that ride/crash as soon as possible, Meinl. Sounds soo freakin guuud
got your wish :)
The two Matt drum gods in a row!
And yet Matt does it again. Drummers from MD I tell ya. We flow like the Chesapeake!🤘🥁😉
More than just massive rim shots and linear banger fills. Incredible playing again, my dude
More of this please. This was amazing.
Amazing. Fantastic. Congrats
Matt is my all time favorite drummer!! So glad to see new videos!!!
Yeah new Stuff!!! Joey composes the best songs and chord progressions ever ,so unique and recognition value and Matt rips the fuck out of it 🤤🤘
The Izzo back at it again with a killer track!! Oh, and of course Matt Halpern on the drums lol
Damn those cymbals sound so crisp and perfect
That felt like teh beginning of a periphery song. Where it left off iut where the heavy part starts.|
Matt is an absolute joy to watch.
Can't get enough of Matt!
That kit sounds huge. So much lovely round bottom end.
Whoa, holy moly. Matt Halpern, no clue who you are, but I will find out now! AMAZING
Jesus, I have to add, I love seeing the passion through your body while you play. This is great
Always enjoy watching you play Matt! Can't wait to see you destroy some drums out on the road with Periphery again!
I have learned. You teach me sir. Thank you.
His groove is unmatched.
Wow fantastic
Dude does really know how to play drums! Well done!
Loved the piano part.
man his playing is my favorite....I wish I could take lessons from him in person
Too good.
This is such a great song!!!🤘🏻🔥 Bravo!!!
Please release a signature ride! That thing would sell so well. It sounds amazing.
Absolutely beautiful! 🥺❤️
Beautiful setup, but I absolutely love that hi-hat sound 😍

Always good
So much power in crashing on the crash ride
I just love everything specially his "corn dog" shirt
Would love to see drumeo bring Halpern to the "X Drummer Hears This Song for the First Time." I'd love to see which song they choose for him, and what he'd play to it!
He's the best!!1!
We don't know yet when that prototype ride will be released but it'll be as great as the mike johnston's, really crashable 🤩🤩🤩
love this !
What a Drum “Jock”!!!!!
Esses pratos são showww
Já até encomendei os meus o de 18 e o de 20
MMMMMMM that RIDE!!!! GIMME! (also MH is sickasf like you knew he was)
Something about Matts and being really good at drums..
Wait, is this THE Joey Izzo from Arch Echo? If so, love me some Arch Echo!!!!
Yep, it sure is! Joey is the best.
2 bears 1 cave!!🤘🤘
The deep v-cut shirt is missing, so I almost didn't recognize the man.
Great performance as always - but where's the v-neck shirt?!
I would buy the shit out of that ride if it was on sale
Where can I get Matt's t-shirts? They are amazing
Where can I get the Corn Dog shirt, sir?
Reminds me of Entertain Me by Tigran hamasyan
you could probably put a face cam on this man, and have a very entertaining video to watch, considering all the timed movements he does with his head during the kicks/ snares.
This was freakin aswesome
Dude, Bill Murray is killing in the pocket.
Wow! Its my birthday yesterday May 16th its awesome to hear this piece played by the one and only Matt Halpern!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
3:41 creamy
corn dog dark throne shirt?!!!?!?1 abosultlyy swagggyyyyy i want one too :(
i've been searching for this shirt i cant find it WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY
1:43 is cooool
Djent meets Mouse on the Keys. Epic!
Delicious.
If you don't mind can you give all brand with name your drums and cymbals
2:32 stinkface intensifies tremendously!
1:52 sounds like a tigran version of the 1:21 riff in masochist by polaris Lmao
Sounds like something Tigran Hamasyan would write. Pretty cool.
That’s exactly what i was thinking
Nolly is the best mixer
where do we find this song?
Supercool...🎲🎲🎲
Djent keys? Dope
keep spinning those plates
his tom work, as well as his use of cymbals is very Gavin Harrison-esque... I wonder if Matt takes inspiration from him...?
Where is your "5" reference ?
I wanna see him on some Kaz Rodriguez or Tigran tracks
Ufff, I always wanted to hear his style over some Kaz or any other jazz fusion tracks for some time.
Well that was djazzy.
2 bears 1 cave hat?
💜💜

It's giving me massive Tigran Himasyan vibes
Reminded me of Lux Terminus
If Periphery was a drum and piano duo
piano djent
So are we ignoring the fact his shirt has a corndog on it
Matt kind of reminds me of Travis Barker with good chops.
who said pianos can't djent?
Exactly 1 minute of cymbal play.
V-Neck Halpern was cool but black metal Halpern is way cooler!
Seems V-necks have been withdrawn from the production
Cheeky
Assy for sure
lmao what is that shirt??
Incredible playing
I've listened to way too much auto generated djent. It's all I can hear in the 2nd half of this song 😂😂
Piano Djent
404: error. V-neck is missing.
Mouse djents on the keys
Djent fit all styles
