Periphery's vocalist Spencer said in a metal injection interview his favorite vocalist of all time is Mike Patton so funny you should say that
Matt is the groove master of metal. Also, their vocalist Spencer has a HUGE range. The dude hits a G5 in their song Satellites.
His voice goes up like an Angel.. and down like a wounded Ox
@@w-dad4040"... Perrripherrry, love that shit!"
That cool part you backed up to in the middle is freestyle groove. There are no drums during that part of the song on the record.
Oh great!
Beat me to it with that comment, love the improvisation he add to tracks live!
My favourite Periphery song - great to see someone react to it! And what a drummer...
Hell yes Neil! He's great!
ua-cam.com/video/V6opW1i58xU/v-deo.html I'm a new subscriber and have really enjoyed your videos. If you haven't heard Terrsarct drummer Jay Postones play then you should check him out.
Thanks for sharing the great videos!
He absolutely gets the most out of his cymbals. Matt really sits in the pocket so fucking well. Also, on the albums, a lot of the credit should go to Nolly who is their sound engineer and studio bassist. He and Matt have really nailed what it takes to get big, phat sounding drum sounds.
Well said!
Adam 'Nolly' Getgood also has his own brand of electronic drum tracks, which Periphery uses a lot, Getgood Drums. But I'm sure that's pretty well known.
"3 cymbals with one swing of the stick" is an inside joke from their first album. Their best album in my opinion.
HAHA! Love it Kevin :)
I could never get into their first, really. I love the second I love how poppy it is. The guest guitarists are also great.
Same here... Periphery 1 was insane. Zyglrox and Racecar are, in my humble opinion still their greatest work.
@@jlae111 totally agreed , apparently he chunked through three cymbals that were stacked ontop of each other in a recording for a cool sound and one swing blew chunks from all three hence the saying from the CD
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I can't believe you haven't hit any david diepold yet!!! Dead set on suicide, or the inevitable degradation of flesh. Dude is god tier metal drummer.
Periphery is SUCH a good band, amazing talented guys
Another reaction to Matt Halpern? Yes, please. More. Much, much more. Matt is by far my favorite drummer of all time, so by all means, react to as many of his songs as you'd like to! I met him at a show once, and his personality really is as energetic and bubbly as his playing is.
I second this comment. I had a group lesson with him and it was fucking sick. More Halpern plz.
Matts game kinda is like "if a cymbal stops moving, hit it. there aren't supposed to be non moving cymbals during the ENTIRE song"
Or non moving drums.
Constant state of flow
Thank you for this! I've never heard of Matt or Periphery. I was smiling and had goosebumps practically the entire time.
Matt is just soooo sick! Love periphery. All the guys in periphery are super talented. If anyone hasn't heard them, check them out cause thier awesome!
Definitely Phil!
”This is what I want my toms to sound like when they grow up...” 🤘😂🤘
Periphery is one of my favorite bands and are awesome live. All the musicians are phenomenal!
LOVE me some Matt Halpern!! Would love to see you react to Alex Bent from Trivium! :)
Sounds good Matt!
Alex Bent playthrough of Revanchist or Sever The Hand
Matt is awesome. He has the looseness, musicality, pocket and fluidity of a jazz player.
Nailed it Kren!
He's fluid
This song is an absolute beast! You should definitely check out Make Total Destroy, it’s from Periphery II which is the same album Ragnarok is from and you will have your mind absolutely blown!
Damn, Matt even wore his formal v-neck for the occasion
Bro Matt isn't in the pocket. He's the fuckin jeans.
BAHAHAHA
That sound effect edit at 1:50 just killed my ears. Beware other headphone users lol
Instantly clicked this when the notification popped up! Matt is one of the best drummers out there currently feel wise. He pioneers drums in a way that’s beyond our understanding.
I'm a new fan!
Half of what he plays through each run is improvised as well. Any two videos of Matt playing a song, the fills and flares are different, symbal accents appear out of nowhere, etc. Absolutely astounding groove.
Periphery is my favorite band and it has a lot to do with Matt Halpern, and Spencer, and Misha, the whole band is just crazy talented.
Yes Mark! 🙌
Halpern always looks like he's having the best time
would be nice to see a series of vids of you trying to play some of the fills or parts of this songs with techniques you arent used to , and give your feedback and tips from what you have learn doing it. something like ' classic drummer tries to play periphery/meshuggah/blast beat ' etc etc. I bet a lot of new and old drummers will feel encourage to get out their comfort zones and expand their techniques with vids like that. Cheers from Christchurch
The Periphery channel- Matt and Bulb jamming on a new groove.
Matts flow is impeccable, had the honor to get a short lesson with him before a gig here in Germany, he made the wooden desk next to him sound like a full drumkit.
I love that video and he is really a gifted player.
Hi Andrew, I know you've done a couple of Periphery songs now, but if possible could you do Garden In The Bones. There is a drum feature clip on UA-cam showing off Matt's weaponage playing the song in full. Appreciate it if you can, keep up the good work.
Please do Matt Halpern’s studio video of Dracul Gras!
He improvises a lot! I love that song!
You're on fire Andrew! Lot's of personal favorites
HAHA GREAT!
Oh, he is so fun to watch. Haven’t seen this one (shame on me) so thanks! This was awesome. 🤘🏻🥁
Freaking awesome!
I was a Zildjian fan until i bought my first set of meinls back in 2009. Love them
Youre not talking about any specific detail about his performance or playing, really expected more from a Drummer reaction
Awesome! Made it into the video!
I think alot of Matt's unique playstyle comes from the fact he doesn't stop moving most of the time, like there's always ghost notes or little off-hits on splashes and toms so the left hand isn't just hovering over the snare, if he's not playing a double bass pattern or pinning the hi-hats then they're constantly working keeping time. It could almost be called flailing about but it's done with such precision and attention to the groove of the song that there's no way it can be misinterpreted as just random swings at the kit! great stuff.
Yeah he get's his flow on and it's a big rolling momentum thing. Freaking awesome
I fucking love it when I see Rooney get into a groovy ass metal riff haha.
How good is it getting some of that kiwi accent on youtube
🤣👌
1000% made the comparison to mike Patton as well. Especially certain songs!!
For vocal changes - check out Jinjer
Agreed, he's definitely a Patton fan.
Has to be!
Hey Andrew, you're so right about about how clamping cymbals too tight will choke the sound. Not to mention that it's a great way to shorten the life of cymbals. Especially if they are hit hard. I used to know a drummer who would crack his cymbals all the time because he had them too tight and he would also hit them directly into the edge. That puts a lot of stress on the bronze.
On the other hand, I'm not crazy about having the cymbals swinging too much, especially if I only have one crash, as I sometimes find the cymbal is going the wrong way when I go for a quick second hit. So instead of getting a nice explosion of sound I wind up with almost nothing as my stick barely touches the cymbal.
As always, great content.
You nailed it Jake!
Find the balance that works for you. I can't stand any part of drum hardware wound up too tight! Totally unnecessary
@@AndrewRooneyDrums 👍
Matt has explained his cymbal technique in clinics/videos. He basically hits with a “swooping” motion in order to hit hard while preserving his cymbals.
Yes! Glancing blows always the best Shaun!
Matt's way of hitting crash symbals, if it aint moving - hit it!
theres needs to be a wind advisory everytime Periphery comes into your town from all the air being moved by Matt's cymbals.
I personally second everything you say , was awesome you liked all the same stuff haha
Great Zack!
The beat in the background during the last part of the video sounds awfully familiar to the beginning of "Waiting On the World to Change" by John Mayer
That's my cover of it :) You can find it a few months back in my vids :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums oh sweet. Knew I recognized that. It's one of my favorite songs
@@zeustheindifferent Me too!
Oh! Cymbal not moving?
Matt "Hold my beer"
I am aware my Matt Halpern - Lune pick was super tame but was chosen as I've never seen someone pour so much emotion into drumming!
Relieved someone was able to offer a more monstrous performance by him 😅
No way bro! Your pick was fantastic
Periphery - Satellites (Drum Playthrough) is coming out. please do react for that
Check out Morgan Rose. The drummer for sevendust. He’s a fukn monster! Does background vocals while he’s tearing up the drum kit.
I think that one guy does both of these vocals
Crazy!
Probably not the best video of Matt to review but really happy you did 😁
Andrew-sub to Guitar Center drum off. What a treasure trove!
Senor Rooney, check out Matt Halpern playing Reptile. It’s the whole band but it’s epic.
Thanks Dustin!
Respect to his "drum tech". Solid assembly ? ✅
Yes Mark!
First, great video!
Second, you sound like Korg from Thor.
I have never been this early to a video xD I'm so conflicted with Periphery, obviously they are all unbelievably talented musicians, they've worked their asses off to develop these skills, but, I just cannot get on with the choices they make about sound. Everything is one volume, forever, and yes I have seen them live and it was still the same, there were "clean sections" and they were the same volume as the "heavy sections", there is no dynamic contrast in their music which is something that sorely hampers heavy music. What makes a heavy riff sound even heavier? When it's preceded by something quiet (case in point Meshuggah "Lethargica" breakdown). Glad to hear the toms don't all sound like kicks any more, but I'm still convinced you could swap all his cymbals for chinas, and no one would notice.
Fair enough man! To each their own. Appreciate the honesty :)
@derp derpin everything I've heard, every time I've given them another go, since the year the appeared on my radar (I was at uni so 2009/2010) has been that. I'm not talking about just there being "clean parts" and "heavy parts", I mean literally they've compressed everything so hard, and use so much digital processing that there is no distinguishable volume difference between the "soft" and "heavy" sections of their songs. It's a stylistic choice they've made using very digital rigs and lots of programming, it's just their sound, and I personally don't enjoy it, even though I know they as musicians are some of the very best players in the genre right now. Even live, I saw them supporting Devin Townsend a few years back and the entire set was just one volume from start to finish, there was no discernable increase in the intensity of sound when they went from clean to heavy.
@@drumurrrgh Its funny, you say that. They are highly praised for their sound mixing by the majority, though. Even people, who dont like their style often say something like "... but they sound incredible". Their (kind of former) bassist Nolly is the man behind this. But yea, music is a very subjective thing in general. Opinions are opinions.
Ya man, they're super sick. Anytime drum tracks are "written" in a program is a strange way to do things in my opinion. So for Matt to kill this stuff live and on records is unbelievable to me. So good. Also, Misha knows the heavy.
Yeah this is awesome Kayne!

Or Matt garska cafo
My toms are still just kids what do you feed yours to grow lol
Halpern vids man. Feed em Halpern!
I agree with the Mike Patton comparison. I have always thought that. By the way, that's a great singer to be compared to for anybody who might be upset by that.
All hail the V neck!
Ghost Note City
try Trivium's drummer Alex Bent drum playthrough of Sever the Hand or Revanchist
if matt doesn't get you to dance then his cymbals will!
HAHA
Harsh and soft vocals are all Spencer.
what coffee is this?
INSANE drummer, such a shame that Periphery albums don't have this kind of drum sound. On the albums it almost sounds like he's playing e-drums, so plastic and without dynamics.
smh
He hits the drums harder than a kid who just touched his dad's thermostat
Mike Patton!? ....nah. thats an insult to Mike. closest thing really out there in the Mike Patton dept would be 12 Foot Ninja.
