I was never gonna give this movie a second thought. I was hanging out with my buddies, and their parents had rented this. We're just sittin' around, bored, looking for something to do, so we watched this; I was blown away. The powerhouse performances by our 3 leads and all the supporting roles, hoo-wee. I'm not a parent, but I can feel what Sean Penn is giving us. That Clint Eastwood really knows how to make a film.

The 'JIMMY - SEAN - DA' on the sidewalk is so hauntingly tragic. Dave, like his name in the cement, wasn't fully there. Missing. Vanished. Taken. Dennis Lehane - who wrote the novel - writes a lot of stories about the loss of innocence. The opening scene happened to him as a child. Thankfully he escaped the car. A lot of his works have been made into great films: Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island, The Drop. Wrote for The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, created/wrote the phenomenal series Black Bird. I recommend all.

Director Clint Eastwood's dark, superbly staged and acted drama is heartbreaking and already a classic.

Here’s a lil Trivia Nugget: the scene when Sean Penn is being held back by the mound of cops was unscripted. He was given full control of his reaction & many on set (in uniforms) said trying to hold him back was like trying to hold a raging elephant or bull. It was done in one take with many cameras rolling at once.

    • @fionnmaccumhaill3257

That's Clint's directing style to totally give free reign to the actors. Some really big names have complained for the same reason being used to directors telling them exactly how they want a scene.

Never judge a book by its cover. Tim Robbins was the star of this. Seemed like a timid broken man, until the interrogation scene, and he destroys the detectives. And he beat a man to death. Be careful, you never what’s hiding under someone’s demeanor. Great reaction, thank you

Y'all both can be forgiven for pinning it on Dave so early. He was giving creepy vibes when he was watching Katie at the bar. It's incredibly sad when you realize that he was looking at Katie, thinking of the fact that he was never given the chance to be a carefree young adult partying and laughing with friends at a bar. Since he was forced into that car, he carried the weight, sadness, and trauma of the event with him his whole life. Celeste really should have known better.

The book was amazing, and the movie did it justice. Every single actor just killed it, even the kids. Sean Penn finding out it was his daughter was one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever. He was looking at her like that because he has known her since the day she was born. He could see how happy she was dancing on the table, and you have to understand that because of what happened to him; who do you think was responsible for nothing happening to katy while her father was in prison? It was definitely Dave that kept an eye on her because he truly understood that there are vampires out there that will get her or any kid if noone is watching out. He is the only one that knows that and so he he has been keeping an eye on katy anytime she was within eyeshot outside of her home. That's why he didn't take his eyes off of her until she drove away in her car from the bar. There was nothing creepy about it.

Asia and BJ, I've been with you since the pandemic and you keep making great choices! This one's grown on me over the years - chockful of AMAZING performances w/ Penn the center around which everyone else resolves.
It's a true morality play - child abuse, unresolved trauma, and an object lesson in the fallacy of shoehorning facts to support your conclusion rather than allowing the facts to guide you to the truth, even if it's one you don't desire.
The penultimate scene of Laura Linney comforting Penn as she tells him they did nothing wrong is chilling, right out of "Macbeth" - the wife absolving him of responsibility, which he readily accepts to deny responsibility for what he's done.
Know what might be interesting next? Denzel Washington's "Macbeth!"

The Sean's wife subplot is a metaphor to show how each of the kids all struggled to have to connect healthily as adults. Each of the men were stunted from the abduction. Him reaching out to her at the end is him growing and working past the trauma. He's the healthiest of the men and after seeing how bad its gotten (one murdered by another) he's realising he needs to move past the trauma and have healthy connections to those around him
This and Prisoners you really see how abduction and torture to kids emotionally and mentally stunt your adulthood. Both the characters they want you to think are the killers (Dave in this and Alex in Prisoners) were both victims as children and come off weird because of the severe trauma.

Despite what people say about Sean Penn as a person, as an actor he is amazing. I highly recommend Bad Boys (1983) and I Am Sam (2001). I think you both would like them.

I remember having a sick feeling in my stomach at the end of this movie. I remember thinking it had to be Dave but also it’s usually not the obvious one but never thought it was the kid. Such a good movie though

Sean knew Jimmy killed both of them, he just knew Jimmy was affected by their childhood like he was, so he probably wanted to let sleeping dogs lie. He has him in his sights, and Jimmy is at his will.

Isn't it crazy that Sean Penn is also the lawyer David Kleinfeld in Carlito's way that you just watched? He can play a real range of characters and make himself look very different. Jimmy is the type of guy, like Carlito, that Kleinfeld wanted to be.

When I first saw this movie, I was on Dave's side up until he changed his story and said he'd killed a pedo. Up to that point, I held out hope there was a mugger and he was honest about that because his character knew what it was like to be a victim and he'd not stayed with his abusers long enough to get Stockholm Syndrome or otherwise identify with them, so I felt he's the last person who'd ever hurt a kid. He knew how awful that was. But when he changed his story, like Sean Penn, I thought why wouldn't you admit it if it was a pedo you attacked? That's when I wondered if maybe he did do it after all. But then we found out the truth and I was like noooo, poor Dave! :( Such a powerful movie! Brilliant acting by everyone in it too.
