Most people decide that Jack Nicholson is a villain because of his ferocity, but the writing is much more subtle. He wrote his play based on something that happened to his sister. She was a JAG lawyer and sent to Gitmo to investigate a case, and she wondered why she (an inexperienced JAG lawyer) was sent to handle that case. This was the genesis of the play. When Rob Reiner acquired the rights for the movie, he asked Sorkin to rewrite it for the screen. Sorkin stuck pretty close to his stage play. Then Reiner explained that they weren't limited to stage sets, and they could go to any location he wanted. Sorkin then wrote the whole Gitmo scene with Col. Jessup and the Lt. Col. Markinson scenes.

Great reaction guys. Kevin Pollak has some great stories about filming this and bringing his mom to the set who apparently was infatuated with Nicholson. I loved the fact that John knew about his comedy routine. You should definitely watch Indian Summer. It has Pollak and Alan Arkin who just passed. It's a comedy about adults going back to their childhood summer camp.
My Dad was in the Marines during Vietnam and he said Code Reds were done . He even witnessed a guy getting that one described in the movie called a " G.I.shower" , so my Dad said after that , he made sure to keep himself bathed .
This movie is the perfect example of talented writing and the actors & direction to back it up. This film changed careers for a lot of the cast. Simply put, it's a classic like I hope we see again one day. 🙏❤️🎬👍
I was a navy brat and my mom watched this movie over and over again among other navy films, she has passed. When i was young i didnt get it. Now that i have served for 11 years i get all the little details and importance of this film. Excellence from mulitiple actors and story.
Those Marines drilling practically keep their uniforms on ice to keep them as pristine as possible, their inspections for their uniforms are crazy detailed, and that's before you even get to sheer dedication to drilling they have to undertake.
Man oh man, the last time Tom Cruise did a good performance where you didn't see the acting was "Risky Business" in 1983, lol. You guys are great reactors! It's terrific because you guys know movies so well, obviously! You're just filling in! Very cool! Love that you recognized Christopher Guest. I'm assuming you've seen "This Is Spinal Tap" (which is also directed by Rob Reiner). If not, that should vault to the top of your list....especially since it's only an hour and 20 minutes! And I RELISHED how much you appreciated Jack's performance! You guys are fantastic Jack Nicholson reactors!!! Could you do me a favor? SO MANY of Jack's greatest performances/movies haven't even been reacted to yet! Or if so, very few. So these are all ones to cross of the list: "Easy Rider", "Five Easy Pieces", and "Carnal Knowledge". 1969, 1970 and 1971. These three put him on the map, changed the game, and established three archetypes for his characters. "Carnal Knowledge" is a PERFECT movie, script, acting, directing......not one reaction for it eyt. And you guys would KILL on that one! Going forward, "The Last Detail", "Chinatown" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" 1973, 1974, 1975. The first mountaintop. You probably saw them already. Jumping up a bit, you've got "The Shining" (which you must have seen) immediately followed by a COMPLETELY different, brilliant performance in "Reds" and then knocked it out of the park in "Terms Of Endearment" (his second Oscar). Those three movies in order, completely different performances. Then you've got "Prizzi's Honor", an 80s mob comedy directed by John Huston, great one! He's great in "Broadcast News" in a sort of cameo role. And also in "Heartburn" with Meryl Streep. (he also did "Ironweed" with Meryl Streep, though I'm not sure how that one holds up). In the late 90s he did "About Schmidt", one of his last truly great performances. Anyways, whichever of those films you haven't seen yet, pop 'em on the list! There are others as well, but I didn't want to overwhelm you with an even longer listing. Definitely don't sleep on "Carnal Knowledge", on or off the channel!!!!
To know Rob Reiner as “Meathead” from TVs “All In The Family”...& then to go on to direct some great films..like “A Few Good Men”...”Stand By Me”..”When Harry Met Sally”..& “Spinal Tap”..is pretty cool 😎
It's weird that they said this doesnt feel like an Aaron Sorkin script, because ive always felt like this was the prime example of his work and the most Sorkin-ass Sorkin script thats ever been written.

Great Reaction Greg and John! Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson does a great job in this movie 👍
The joy the two of you displayed watching this movie was a true delight. And “Papa, can you hear me?” 🎶 The funniest comment of this reaction!
Tom Cruise is an amazing actor-always have been. Btw you should watch Major Payne - it's a comedic military movie.
Those Marines drilling practically keep their uniforms on ice to keep them as pristine as possible, their inspections for their uniforms are crazy detailed, and that's before you even get to sheer dedication to drilling they have to undertake.
Watched this movie last night. Anytime I see it on, I fall into watching it. Completely brilliant cast, script, and direction.
The writing and performances in this movie makes it so compelling to watch. One of my favs. Great watching your reactions Greg and John 👍✌️
"WE'RE GOING TO MCDONALDS!" I'm dying! 😂
LOVE this movie ~ another one that will grab you is "The Life of David Gale" (Kevin Spacey & Kate Winslet) 💚
"I don't want a deal and I don't want immunity..." I want McDonald's. LOL As a former manager of Mcdonald's, I thought this was hilarious!🤣
41:24 A FEW GOOD MEN 2: THE TRUTH CAN’T BE HANDLED
The actor who played the JAG Captain at the beginning, also played a JAG officer, (an Admiral), in the TV series, "JAG".
The script has those lines that get repeated, like on "The West Wing."
@@Tr0nzoid Yeah. This movie is the Sorkin Template. Which is why what they said was so weird.
I remember this movie. Nice one
54:49: Most people decide that Jack Nicholson is a villain because of his ferocity, but the writing is much more subtle. His speech makes a good point about the gap between civilian and military ideas of honor, and how the two worlds barely understand each other. The military's job is to ensure civilians don't see violence, but they do it by being violent against enemies, and sometimes you don't want to know what they did.
You guys should also watch men of honour, that's a fantastic film.
