John Doe's sin was Envy. He envied Mills' normal life. Then Mills became Wrath when he killed John Doe, completing the 7 Deadly Sins in the movie.
** Btw, during the John Doe chase scene where Mills falls, Brad Pitt actually did break his arm, so they wrote it into the story. However, he still had scenes to film from before the chase, so they had to try and hide the cast. The scene where Tracy invites Somerset to dinner, you can see Pitt wearing his watch over the cast to try and hide it.

BJ was right that John Doe's sin was envy, but did you guys catch that Det. Mills' sin was wrath? Like Somerset said, if Mills killed John Doe in anger, John would "win". Of course, Mills wasn't physically killed by John at the end, but he may as well have been. One of the most devastating movie endings of all time.

47:46 John Doe was playing chess because now how Mills’ chooses to live life is his final act. If Mills kills himself John Doe has won and, if he lives, he’ll forever be reminded of the 7 Deadly Sins. Mills living and forever remembering him proves that Doe was right, which would drive anyone crazy. The most obvious move would then to commit suicide, but that’d just be letting Doe win. The best move for Mills, would’ve been for him to let Doe live, even though it’s completely understandable why he didn’t.

For the sake of all things Halloween, you MUST watch "The Exorcist". It's THE most iconic and disturbing horror film in history. In 1973, people were running out of the theaters mid movie. People actually fainted and became ill. Some theaters would not allow pregnant women into the showings.

I saw this movie in the theater back in 1995. It was incredible. I remember reading an article in a magazine about the making of this movie back then. Brad Pitt actually injured his hand while filming this movie. They had to write that injury into the movie to explain why his character's hand was hurt. The acting in this movie was so good. A memorable movie. I still recall specific scenes and dialog after all this time. A must see.

I remember when I first watched it years ago... had me captivated trying to figure it out. However, the ending was Mind-Blowing... Classic Movie... Suspense, Thriller & Mystery... plus it's Disturbing... because it makes you realise some people's psychology is way out there... in terms of the way they might think. No Happy Conclusion in this one... Take it Easy Asia & BJ ☮️ 🇬🇧

The sequence with Sloth...when that guy flinched everyone in the theater jumped. One guy actually got up and RAN toward the back of the theater to get away from it. And no one would have noticed, if he hadn't come right back to his friends laughing at himself. Everyone on our side of the theater got a much needed chuckle.

Lots of comments about the horror aspect of this film but I took it as a commentary on modern day living i.e. we don't live in medieval times but the seven sins still exist and are common in our every day lives. The first five sins John Doe picks for his exposition are quite mundane, reasonable examples of city life. BJ noticed that it rained all the time except for the part at the end when they went out of town. But, horror of horrors, the deadly sins exist there too. You made it, society, suck it up.
Great film. I especially enjoyed the youth vs experience played out by Pitt and Freeman and the unremitting depressive atmosphere which permeates almost every scene.
