- CRUISE TIP # 24 DON'T MAKE THIS INSURANCE MISTAKE.
There is something not everyone knows when booking travel insurance on your own. You must book the insurance from the time you leave your home to the time you arrive back at the home. otherwise your claim could be denide.
Important information especially when booking insurance with cruise line. You may be staying an extra day somewhere and might not be covered.
Great tip. Make sure you have bit of space to make sure fully covered.
We have an insurance for a year , meaning everything within this year is insured.
No matter how long the actual cruise plus the transport, no matter how many trips.
We just have to make sure that we book a follow-up insurance once we know it could be critical with the duration at the end of that year. .
Makes sense to insure from home to destination. Hard to believe some people go without.
Thanks again for solid advice. Got to double check mine again.
I’m just about to get my insurance and I was wondering what happens if my 11:30 PM flight arrives late so thank you for that.
As I'm European, my cruises are booked mostly through European cruise line's consultant of my preferred US cruise line. So, I always have full travel insurance from European company (European travel insurances include automatically medical insurance and always require full dates of travel) - there is every travelling covered - no matter which kind of travel. I don't need a special cruise insurance. Btw in my case, I cannot apply anyway for an insurance directly with US cruise line due to be an European and not living in US/CAN. And I only need additional insurance for travelling US/CAN, bc my normal insurance covers the rest of the world anyway.
Getting good third-party travel insurance is a good idea. I am thinking about year-long coverage instead of per-trip insurance that I do now.
We seem to get basic? The cheapest insurance possible. My wife handles that ⚓️
Got it. You should cover cancelation verses interruption. Sort of a before and during trip times pre and post flights.
Insurance is in the business of denying claims. More they deny the less they pay out and more they make. No thanks.
We always use cruise line insurance. Next year, we may have to get some other coverage since we're flying to Seattle to cruise tob Alaska.
As usual, great advice. Thanks, Don!
If I book the cruise line's insurance does it start on the day of the cruise and end the return day? Or will it cover transportation the day before the cruise?
Question Don. I have wondered how you make out buying travel insurance. Many viewers are aware of your health history and this makes me wonder how difficult it would be to set up a travel insurance policy for someone in this situation. I know that since I’m over 60 now, well actually 68 almost every travel insurance company has a slew of medical questions. Most have the same questions but some do differ in the way other word them or time span of changes before travel. They all do make it clear that pre-existing conditions are not covered, scary!😱 the only one I have come across that will cover pre-existing conditions is the CAA (AAA for American viewers) of south central Ontario. They offer coverage at an additional cost but limit the payout to $200,000 CDN. One thing too that bugs me is not the cost of the medical insurance but trip cancellation and interruption as it is very expensive! It makes me think that there is actually a greater chance of a trip being cancelled than a person has of getting into an emergency medical situation.
Just one more thing people need to be aware of, cruise line policy’s have a pretty low level of financial coverage and you might find you will get a better deal by purchasing from an outside provider. Cheers🍻👍
Both Travel Guard Insurance and Allianz travel insurance companies offer Pre-existing coverage. The only caveat is You Must book the insurance within 2 weeks of when you booked the trip.
@@jenniferlandreth7962 is this Canada Allianz? Because several tomes I’ve went through their medical questionnaire right to the end and hadn’t found this option. I just went through travel guard and I found an exclusion of conditions which states that health issues present before purchase of policy. How ever I did not go through with an application, something like this wording I couldn’t copy to paste the exact wording. It also states in another section that there is a pre existing condition waiver. Insurance companies deliberately make policies confusing don’t they? But I also see a platinum plan that appears to include the waiver and it was expensive at over $2000. When I went through the CAA policy medical and chose the preexisting coverage it was $1400 (approx) for both my wife and I. However the preexisting portion of it is only $200,000 coverage. One thing we should notice is the dollar amount of the insurance coverage of any plan, some are $2,000,000 CDN, some are $5,000,000. When away the medical bills will likely be in U.S $’s with the American dollar costing about $1.41 CDN it really reduces the policy’s value.
@@TripReviews So I am in the U.S. Didn’t think there would be a difference. I call vs going online to book the policy. Also, we buy the top level which does cost more, however when you are far from home bases are covered. It comes to about 10% of Total trip cost. Better to have it than not need it, than not have it and need it.
Which insurance companies does everyone use?
Most important to make sure you have evacuation cover an air lift could cost you upwards of 20,000.00 you may just break a finger but if it needs to be reset within 24 hrs so you can sign your checks your gonna need, I spruke this every cruise and there are a lot that don’t think they need it but a few hundred up front is better than 20 grand later, I need to get a job at an insurance company .😮😮😮😅
We always get insurance for our whole trip and last yr we booked an extra day. You never know when something can happen
Thanks for the great advice! So appreciated
We book annual policy and cruise insurance also, we get an additional policy with an add-on to cover the entire length. We are over insured, but better off safe.
We always get insurance for an extra day it's usually no extra cost.
We have had year long policies for the past few years. That way all trips are covered. I think it works out cheaper than a per trip basis because it also covers our weekend trips, etc.
Who do you recommend for travel insurance? I am in Canada and am 78 years old.
How many claims have you submitted and how satisfied were you? Was the company easy to deal with or weee they trying to deny coverage?
I will go first. I bought cruise insurance for a cruise that was canceled during covid by the cruise line. The insurance company refused to refund my money, even though I didn't cancel and the policy was completely worthless.
That's awful. Every time I've had a trip canceled by the cruise line or tour operator whether during Covid or not, they always refunded the insurance premium.
Does that also apply if you are driving to and from the cruise port?
I would have the insurance for at least 1 day beyond when you are supposed to land in your home city.
Read and make sure you fully understand all the fine print!
Considering Alliance for our next trip
Do you recommend the yearly insurance?
Great idea. Having yearly travel insurance
I thinking about extra insurance.
Thanks for the great advice.
If you travel more than a couple of times per year, a yearly plan may be significantly cheaper. As a side benefit, (at least with our policy), we are covered anytime we are more than 100 miles from home. That includes all of our land trips and weekend getaways.
Insurance always confuses me.
Always book good insurance, have seen too many people without it in terrible situations.
Get a full year of insurance
Thank you for the tip

Good advice.
Great tip!!!
Hi Don
Wassup
Because we travel so much, we have a policy that covers the whole year no matter how many trips we take.
Much cheaper the buying a policy for each trip. Also have a great health insurance policy in addition that covers us world-wide.
This is a great tip, I'll be double checking my insurance.
Wonderful insight, thanks
Hello Don, great tip and a good advice. I for sure will make sure I double check my dates.
Oh wow….good idea to double check that insurance covers the entire trip. I have never double checked that!
That's a Awesome tip, we never knew that. We always thought it was just for the cruise itself.
I hadn’t thought of this so I really appreciate it.
Thanks Don. Great information!! 😊
