  • We talk through TWO PHONE SCAMs affecting cruisers while planning for their cruise and how some end up losing money. Number one way to save money is not getting scammed by trying to save money. Are cruise passengers easy targets as travelers? Should you take the advice of phone representatives calling from “cruise lines”? Should you answer your hotel phone while traveling as a tourist? What do you do when you don’t know the language when traveling to another country? Is international travel safe? This is the latest cruise news in tandem across the cruise industry where all cruise lines are making cruise cutbacks for cruise passengers onboard cruise ships during 2024 and we were surprised by what new scams are affecting cruisers while planning for cruise vacations from Popular Cruise Ports! What do cruise ships do with passengers who are not aware of their surroundings while at port? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle naive cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers okay with cruise lines calling them to verify information? We talk through verified experiences on shore of Cruise Passengers getting scammed and this could happen to you while plan or travel on your cruise fleet wide onboard all Caribbean Cruise Ships including the worlds largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas or soon to be Star of the Seas 2025, and even the worlds smallest cruise ships. This could happen at many cruise ports whether on the Worlds Biggest Cruise Ship Class; or, the Smallest Cruise Ship Class and every Cruise Ship in between. What are your thoughts in our inside cruise chat on the new phone scams affecting cruise passengers while planning to be on Caribbean Cruise Ships 2024?

And, remember that these calls can come to you while you are at home, too. ALWAYS, ALWAYS hang up and call the company direct.

I have had the first scenario happen to me. When the person who claimed to be from Royal Caribbean told me my cruise was canceled, I quickly went onto the website to check it out and kept them talking while I did so, so I coild stall them. Once I confirmed that my cruise wasn't canceled, I waited until the guy finished his spiel, and then I told him "wow, what a coincidence! I work for Royal Caribbean too! What department ate YOU in?" He hung up!!

😂😂😂 My favorite one was when I was working for a government agency and they called my work phone claiming they were from the same agency and there was a warrant for my arrest. 🤣🤣🤣 It was not even a law enforcement agency, it was not the type of agency that arrests people, or issues warrants or anything like that at all.

As a former hotel front desk worker, if your Credit card didn't work, we would let you know right there.
We wouldn't hand you keys and send you to your room and then call you back and ask you for the number over the phone. We would always tell you to come back down to the front desk to settle any matters.
Also, the front desk staff would address you by name because they can see your reservation. So if they called and don't address you by name, it's a scam.

I used to work the overnight shift at a hotel. The staff checking in the guests were supposed to be checking the guest's credit card then. But when it was very busy, they stopped doing that and when I would run the bills, some of the credit cards would be declined
As it would be after midnight, I did not call the room for a different card number, they just would not have a receipt and, hopefully, went down to the front desk to straighten out the bill.

Good information, but really the cardinal rule is...NEVER GIVE PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION TO CALLERS WHO ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE ROOM. NEVER GIVE IT OVER THE PHONE TO SOMEONE YOU HAVE NOT CALLED YOURSELF!

I never answer the phone unless it is someone in my contacts and their name clearly shows. Even when I get a legitimate email, I never click the link, I just go to the website directly fo any follow up. Thanks for sharing these scams, I hope it helps our fellow cruisers.

These scams are so out of control. Whenever I get a call I ask them a question that could not possibly be on their script and they usually just hang up. Or I say I am watching Scammer Payback and they literally panic.

  • @trekguy66
    @trekguy66 Місяць тому +7

Always hang up and call the source directly, that way you know you are talking to the legitimate people. If your card is involved, also hang up and call the number on the back of the credit card and check for questionable activity.

I was a front desk clerk in the early 1990s and we were trained to never transfer a call to a room without verifying the name of the person in the room. The one exception made is one night the hotel was full of maybe high school kids on a field trip (or something like that) and we had incoming calls all night. We just sent them to the room request. Of course, this was all pre-cell phone days.

  • @vmaeallday

I had a pre-cruise hotel charge me twice for the hotel. It wasn’t an accident because I prepaid with my cc and when I got there they asked for a cc to secure the room. When I got my printed receipt, it said I paid again. I told the front desk I prepaid and she just handed me a new confirmation number. It was packed in there, full of cruisers. She kept saying that she didn’t charge me twice. When I called my cc company, indeed they did and removed one of them. I went on the website and low and behold, 3 recent reviews said the same thing.

I’ve heard about the hotel room, Scam but also in a different way where you get a text message saying that your credit card didn’t go through and please enter the information. another thing to watch out for staying in a hotel is many times there’ll be flyers for pizza or other food delivery a lot of times these businesses don’t even exist. You place an order it doesn’t show up but of course a charge on your credit card.

You missed my favorite scam, which has happened twice to us! While on a cruise with our 20ish son, my father got a phone call stating he was in a foreign jail and that he needed hm to pay his bond so he can get back home. My father was a pretty smart guy and told them to let him rot and hung up!

I have traveled a great deal for work. Every single hotel I've stayed in has protocols in place where they ask the caller "What is the name of the traveler for the room you are calling?" I've had a few scammers thwarted because of that. Now, I always ask when checking in what they have in place to prevent this.

I’m wondering since there was not a screening process thru the front desk if somehow they were in on the scam? Popular ports like Fort Lauderdale where there are many hotels in a short distance from the port it would be easy to assume that travelers on a late check in would be cruising out the next morning and there are some sketchy hotels there. Ty for bringing this to our attention!

  • @Misbehaven99

Of note hang up and wait about 15 minutes before calling and or use a different phone line like your cell to call back.. Scammers can now keep lines open for a few minutes after you hang up.. they then😅 play a dial tone while you dial the number and they themselves then answer the call and carry the scam forward. FYI.

If I receive a call that doesn't have a specific name of a person or business and an off beat ringtone (that I put in), I do not answer it. I don't decline the call either. Doing so will let the caller know it's an active number.
If it's really someone trying to reach me, they will leave a message, a call back number, and where they're calling from.
