Orderd one and loving it so far only got a few shots in so far well setting bow up, even the bow tech was surprised on how fast I came to my anchor point
This is exactly how I shoot a thumb release, but I've never seen anyone who uses this method. Thanks for the video and the reinforcement that I haven't been doing it wrong!
I switched from a trigger release to a thumb release. was shown this method and loved it. get the surprise shot of a hinge release while having the safety of a thumb release. was quite a few years ago and in my area, we don't get all the archery big brands a plenty, so most of us had never even seen a hinge release with safety. this was (and is imo) the best option.
I used to try a Hinge Release and my group was great when I did it right. However, I always had an uneasy feeling when drawing the bow, so I went back to the Thumb Release with the bad habits and target panic. After watching your video I really realized how important a surprise shoot is. I have the Stan Shooter and have it set up like in the video. Every shot is now a surprise shot. I am thrilled because unfortunately I also had target panic and it is completely gone. Thank you very much, the tip was very helpful.
Dude, this is the best info I have seen yet. I've been shooting 35 years, but only recently started using a thumb release. I was struggling! I have a truball fang 4. Put the barrel on the other side. DANG! I put the barrel in the web of my thumb and index finger. Man, I might have to put in a stiffer spring. Total surprise everytime. Thanks!
Got out today, and set up my Stan Perfex as described. Didn’t cut down the barrel, but have the shaft in the more central position (short shaft, center hole, left side of activation lever, and up/forward as pictured). Using back mucles at full draw, adding tension, and rotating the pinkey/ring finger works TERRIFIC! It really does feel like your shooting a tension release, and it forces you into having good follow-through on the shot. Thank you for putting this out there. It’s going to help me a lot!
Works. Period. Just shrunk my groups by 2 inches at 30 yards which is huge, since I started hunting again 3 years ago. Now I am inside of a baseball diameter group. Thanks for the tip.
Addresses EXACTLY the problem I have been having problems transitioning from fingers to a release. Lots of target panic, futzing around with different releases, trying to find something that felt like fingers. This gets very close and has really improved my shooting. Thank You
I used to shoot a finger wrist release But i started anticipating my shot. Went to a thumb release..it was good for awhile but then i felt myself anticipating the shot again. Watched you do this and i immediately changed the position of my thumb button. Pull with my little finger and...BANG..surprise!! Thanks so much for this video!! Perfect timing as my archery league starts next week.
This is the best educational bowhunting video ive ever watched!! i shoot the tru fire synapse but want a more efficient surprise shot and havent moved on to the tru fire Sear back tension because of the lack of safety....i adjusted my synapse how you explained in the video and so far it has worked amazingly at the range...thank you!!
I think I have watched this video 4 times in the past year. Good reminders of what I am trying to achieve, regardless or what release I use. I was using a hinge and getting good success, but when that hinge failed 3 weeks ago, I had a thumb trigger to use while my hinge undergoes a warranty replacement. I tied my personal best because I had the information on how to shoot a thumb trigger like a hinge. I may not do it just like Josh does, but it is close enough to get a good surprise shot. Without this surprise shot, I would not be scoring as well as I am.
Thank you for this video. I've always used this method for my thumb releases but had never considered reversing or removing the trigger stud. I really think that will give me even more consistency in my thumb placement. I also want to thank you for the Bowmar Nose Button. I have one on each of my bows and I love the improved consistency in my anchor point. I recommend them to everyone.
I see a lot of people coming back to this just to comment back and say it works so I’m certainly gonna give it a shot I haven’t shit a bow consistently for years, getting in in a few days. will report back in a few weeks myself with group sizes, I suppose just to see if this bit of advice is just something I can just start out by doing to get comfortable form the beginning!
Thank you so much, as someone who's never really struggled with Target panic, I used a finger release for 30 years. I've had a thumb release for one week, took the handle off it, followed your steps, and some really good groups, just became sick!!!
I just got a Carter Chocolate lite. I do not understand why bow shop tell us to get a wrist rocket when this works so much better. It did take a few days but groups consistently down to 2” @ 40 yards. For me that’s a big improvement from plate size to 2”. So thanks you !!! try this it works. Back tensions try this it’s good way of thinking about it. Lifted your arm straight in front of you, then push it straight back. So your arm gets short in front of you. Practice that then go to shooting stands and do the same movement. It works!!
I’ve been bow bunting with a finger trigger for the last 15+ and have been scared to change. You made me change today and have to say thanks. Your nose button is fantastic and now I’m learning to shoot correctly for the first time.
This video is the exact explanation of how I was taught to correctly shoot a thumb button by a pro shooter. The only difference is that I keep a barrel on the release and position it in the V of my thumb and trigger finger. My groups have shrunk incredibly and I have no target panic. Thank you for the videos I will pass this on to others who are struggling
I found this video while icing a huge welt on my forearm after a misfire with my nock2it release. I removed the barrel trigger from the nock2it release and when on target, slowly rotated my pinky back while at full draw. It works great! There is now much less chance of an accidental misfire and it also successfully reduces target panic. Nice tips Joel. Thank You!
James J. Donatelli still shooting the Nock2it without the thumb barrel? I just ordered a Nock2it and wondering if I should try it this way? The way Dudley sets it up with the extended thumb seems like misfires could happen.
I've just had my first bow ever ... A diamond edge sb1 ... And got the sweet spot from Facebook without even knowing how it works ... First 3 arrows I ever shot in my life after lots of UA-cam videos ... I got the feel of it ... Sweet spot pro it's spot on
I suffered from target panic by using for some time a thumb style release, a Carter Chocolate four finger configured the stock way. Then I used a Carter Honey for quite some time in practice and discovered the surprise release. My accuracy improved, but more importantly I no longer suffered from really badly “pulled” shots. Maybe I just didn’t adjust the Honey properly but that release is almost too surprising. Just took the thumb barrel my Spot Hogg Whipper Snapper and tried it as a “hinge”. Worked fine and felt better than the Honey. I would definitely recommend using a Honey as a first step, and then go barrelless.
Pin does not have to be in the middle for the shot to hit extra middle.... put the pin where you want it and let it float because it always will... do not start and stop the pull.... pull through continuously and your subconscious will fire the bow at the right time. Stare at the spot and pull through the shot
Great technical video. I’ve shot a trigger release for many years. I seem to go through waves of good and bad shots. I’m definitely going to try this out. I’ve always felt like these thumb buttons just weren’t my style. But you convinced me enough to try this out.
Thank you so much. I watched your first video that touched on this and have been trying to engage my carter wise choice this way since. I’ve had problems with my button (too much pressure or hitting it accidentally)or collapsing my shot and punching the trigger. Knob is coming off and I’m going outside. This is truly an amazing video with a wealth of information in it. Thanks again for taking the time to share.
Bowmar, I've been researching hinge releases and wanted to try one before I spent $200 only to find out that type of release wasn't for me so your info was definitely of interest. Anyhow, I have an old TruFire that I modified like you showed, WOW!!! I love this thing. Thanks so much for the great info. I may go full hinge later but for now, this thumb/hinge release has already improved my groups.
That is a great tip!! I have lost confidence in my thumb release, but when I made the changes that you suggested everything is much better now. Two in groupings at 70 yards. Great video, thank you.
Thanks for the video. The more I research the more I realize that you do not have to use true back tension and there are more pros punching their thumb or index finger than I ever thought. I watched a Lancaster archery tournament where the winner or one of the top finishers was punching his thumb. And Levi Morgan doesn’t believe true back tension is best to activate a release, but I’m sure there are some lofty shooters that think otherwise. The principals you are teaching are understood and are regularly applied in the archery world as you mentioned, but you still have to find what works for you. There are no absolutes when it comes to release technique.
Can't say I've had this problem. Did have some firearms training before I shot bows and just applied that. Maybe people forget to relax and breath. I do see how this could help people so good job.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. This is huge for me cause I always have wanted a back tension but was hesitant because of the reasons you said. Never thought it was practical for hunting from a treestand but this i can do. Good luck guys thanks for sharing this. Happy New Year!!!
I think you just changed my life, man. 🥺 I was considering going to a crossbow because I’ve been having so much trouble with surprise shots. Thank you! 💪
Seriously, hell yes! About 4 weeks set my Wise Choice up short and sweet to get this effect. Folks, when you do this and make yourself perform the execution properly- this flat out works. There's no brain waves bouncing back and forth to activate the release and INTERFERE with your focus- which should be on the exact spot you want the arrow to hit. All I do is just PULL THROUGH THE SHOT and keep my feeble mind on the target/dot/12 ring. It actually takes less mind time to do than using my Carter Total Control which is a fantastic true hinge release. This release set up is going to be awesome when I'm shooting the wild hogs. More ability to focus on that pigs kill zone. 👍👍🏹🏹🐗🐗🐗🐗🐗
Just found this video and I just switched to a thumb release, wasn’t digging it until I took the thumb barrel off , I shoot a whipper snapper and it works great as a back tension, thanks, ps I love the nose button.
Tried the concept with and without the button. Either way seemed to be an improvement over physically using the thumb movement to trigger the release. This was only with a length of rope to pull against not a bow. I will determine which is better for me. With or without the button. I am guessing without the button because my thumb lays flatter against the release. Time will tell. Thanks for a great video.
This was the best video ever if it wasn't for this video I would have still punch my trigger. Because of this video I can now shoot any release without targer panic.
Great work, I've been having inconsistent results in the field with a wrist release. It seems I target panick on nicer animals that I really really want. I'll give this a try and see if it helps.

Wow , came across your video and I have the same releases that you have.!! And I’m gonna try this with the sx3 and my perfex.!! I was about to buy a resistance release, but I’m going to try this instead..!! Thanks Seth..
Idk about a surprise shot. My back tension groups aren’t as consistent as my trigger release group. But I do like that I learned to transfer my draw to my back and not my forearm.
@bomarbowhunting : I really appreciate your innovative mind! You're a really creative man. I dig your ideas and I implement them and they have helped me! Anyway, thanks for being You! Keep it up!
you stated you like the STAN release... try the Heavy Metal Perflex LONG neck I use the X-large GREAT fit in the hand love the weight..will be moving my button all the way over and switching (testing) to the small button after I cut it in half. :-) currently using the big button and longest stalk to get it into the crease of my thumb base. Your suggested position is VERY interesting tnx
I’ve been shooting bows for over 13 years now and I used trigger releases not one single time have I got target panic or anything else I promise you I’m switching to thumb button releases I never get target panic I’ll guarantee that
This was really interesting. I have just come back from practice and I stumbled across your video. I have a thumb release and I can give this method a try. I shot olympic style recurve for years. Cool insight. I'm new to the compound world and the release is where I'm hung up at the moment. I'm in it to hunt and add some meat to the freezer. Thanks for the advice
It works. I just tried it with Spot hogg Saturday night special and I can see it because now my bow actually shakes after the shot because normally I know when to catch it but now the trigger goes of with out me pushing it but I know when it will go off I can feel when I am pulling in to the shoot. One thing I do differently I keep my tumb of the trigger during the loading of the bow once I am ready I put it on and then start turning . I do this because I had an accident when I moved the wrong way during the loading of the bow AND I got a fist in the face and the arrow flew in the wrong direction.
Looking to go towards a back tension after bad hits on 2 deer 2 years in a row. Starting to think its definitely target panic. Feel free to send one of those bad boys my way haha. Great video though, great info, thanks.
Are you still using a thumb button and rotating or did you go to a hinge for 2021? Either way Which one are you using now? I’m going to switch from index. Thanks
Carter makes some different shoes to attach to your thumb release for this method of activation. Works very well on a Carter Target 4. I suggest the smaller of the two.
I have been shooting my compound bow for 4 months and started with a index style should I switch. I am pulling back 42 pounds and I am 11. What should I do and what budget release should I get?
@BowmarBowhunting Do you still shoot your thumb buttons this way still? This video is kinda older and I wondered if you still set your releases up in this way? Thanks
My family always have wrist trigger release and there real good at it but for me totally the opposite and I will try this method to see if it helps and throw my old ones in garbage
To order a Bowmar Nose Button go to www.bowmararchery.com Thank you, it means a lot!
Have you shot any of Dudley’s releases?
Orderd one and loving it so far only got a few shots in so far well setting bow up, even the bow tech was surprised on how fast I came to my anchor point

@@BowmarBowhunting if I decrease both the tension and the travel on the trigger would that make the release touchier and easier to activate?

There’s a lot of target archers who shoot “command style” with their releases. It’s all personal preference
I see a lot of people coming back to this just to comment back and say it works so I’m certainly gonna give it a shot I haven’t shit a bow consistently for years, getting in in a few days.

Thanks for giving your trips out for the new guys
I think most experienced shooters will probably say not to start and stop your execution, not to say it won't be an effective method though.
Starting and stopping the process to make the shot go off will create target panic. Let your pin float and let yourself unconsciously bring your pin back to target. Your only focus should be on the process to make that shot go off. Our brains can't do both at once.

Thanks for all the info Josh! Also, thanks for being a great Christian example to the folks in the industry...especially the kiddos!

One thing I do differently I keep my tumb of the trigger during the loading of the bow once I am ready I put it on and then start turning . I do this because I had an accident when I moved the wrong way during the loading of the bow AND I got a fist in the face and the arrow flew in the wrong direction.
Thanks Bud! Awesome advice. Lol arrow though the window!!

Are you still using a thumb button and rotating or did you go to a hinge for 2021? Either way Which one are you using now? I’m going to switch from index. Thanks
thanks so much this helped alot
Thanks for watching man
Carter makes some different shoes to attach to your thumb release for this method of activation. Works very well on a Carter Target 4. I suggest the smaller of the two.
