I shot as a kid, but stopped for years, got a new bow at the age of 23, the pro shop said I needed 26.5"... fought for 3 years, nobody would hear me out, they said you look good, and anymore you'll be too long... best thing I even did, tell the "pro shop" it's my bow, I'll pay to have it set up to whatever length I want. I added a half inch every week until I I hit 29". I've never shot better and have been more comfortable. Just like reloading my ammunition, tinkering around will show you alot!
I’ll back you up on that. I just got a bow a lil bit ago. Had peep sight issues, it kept moving. Long story short, the pro shop guy set my peep sight a bit low so I have to anchor, touch my nose and arch my face forward to see it instead of standing tall. Absolutely going into a diff shop to fix that soon. It’s not bad but it’s not the most comfortable, I still hit the 10 ring from 30-40yds out consistently

Thanks for this very informative posting. You're point about people with beards is so timely. We broke the world record for the longest Covid lockdown periods here in the state Victoria, Australia. Working from home, my regular haircut and beard trimming schedule 'went to the pack'. My groups were getting inexplicably larger, with more and more very disconcerting 'flyers', for reasons I couldn't explain. It wasn't until my partner asked me how I could possibly comfortably practice "with all that bushy facial hair in way" that I woke up. One good severe facial buzzing later and my pre-covid groups returned with even a few of 'Robinhoods' to prove the point.
I stopped shooting in 2018 when I joined the military and just got my first bow since then literally today. And watching your videos has been a huge help for me getting back into archery. Thank you for making these awesome videos!!! Now I just gotta go to the shop this weekend and get a sight,rest,stabilizer and arrows

I just got my first compound since I stopped shooting at 14 (27 now). UA-cams algorithm recommended your channel right after googling “used compound bows”. Solidly entertaining content! Especially for an archery channel! But between this video and a few of the other educational vids I’ve watched of yours I’ve cleaned up my shooting and form quite a lot in the past couple weeks. And most importantly am not building some bad habits I’m sure I would have if it wasn’t for a few of your educational videos. Keep it up and stay real!
Thank you! I am not shooting a hinge at this point but thinking thru the release keeping pressure on third finger while letting the first finger relax is really helping me . Eliminating the face pressure also is helping ,I have been doing that without knowing how big of a deal that is....

I have primarily had a special place in my heart for long-range shooting and reloading; however, I am being stationed somewhere where most of my rifles are illegal, which has left me to adopt a new hobby (archery) as I do love to hunt as well. At first, I was set on getting a crossbow; however, seeing you collaborate with Kaitlyn and Lee, Drew and Kendall, all of you have motivated me to try this out. I'm more of a buy once, cry once kind of guy, so next month I will be taking the dive into this new world. Thus far, I've read that Hoyt and Mathews are the two biggest flagship bow companies, but from there, it seems never-ending. I'm in high hopes that, just like anything with repetition, you get better the more you do it. I plan to shoot as much as possible before this year's deer season. Happy New Year, and shoot straight.

I've recently gotten the itch to purchase my first compound bow. I'm actually going to go to a pro shop this weekend to try some things out. I'm thinking about going with a mission archery MXR or Switch, I actually watched your beginner bow setup video with the HAMR, but I'd made my mission decision before then. Just wanted to say your videos have been super helpful! I'm sure I'll be back re-watching them once I get setup and shooting.
This type of video is great, especially the hinge tips. I’ve been shooting the hinge for a year now and have had a really tough time getting consistent with it. Just can’t seem to shoot it well. I would suggest making another video on how to shoot a hinge. It is hard to find good content on this. I’ll try these tips and see if they help. Thanks
I am 58 and just starting with bow hunting (my brother gave me a bow) and these tips are awesome. My local sporting goods store is re-stringing the bow before I get started and now I have some real helpful information to get those personal configurations done when it's ready. Thanks.

Great video, last year I had a few shoulder surgeries so is been over a year that I shoot my bow, I am trying to get back in shape so I am starting from the basics.
Watched this video last night and after the range session today I had to come back and say thank you. 3rd finger rotation and face pressure made a huge difference.
This was game changing. I moved my draw length back half an inch and felt much smoother. Thank you for the video
Just to let you know Chris that I have been so frustrated over shooting to the left and made the mistake of moving my sight and my rest with the same results. After watching your video I was eager to go and shoot tonight to put what you said to the test. Voilà 😀. Now I’m shooting to the right and that’s remedied by moving my rest and sight back where they belong. In 2 days I shall be 66 years old. I’m living proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Been catching some of your videos here and there along with the other stuff I watch,right now I'm doing a complete tune out on an old golden eagle bow and the arrows shooting at 77 lbs. I am getting a slight tail left with everything tuned and dialed in, trying to find out why the slight tail left then I watched the video oh hello face pressure on the string . You don't give it much thought but with a heavy draw you will instinctively hard anchor without thinking about it the video was a great reminder and your explanation of these issues are great I'll be watching more of your videos great tutorials Chris thanks

Been bow hunting for 10 years. Started with a hand me down Parker bow self taught basically shot a few deer but also missed a few . Finally bought a new bow this year and didn't realize how bad everything was with my old bow lol. Was making too much face contact on the sting was shooting like an inch and half short on my draw. Now I'm learning how to shoot all over again with a bow that was built for me.
Chris, your tip about anchor points instantly improved my accuracy - a quantum leap forward actually! All my shots were decently grouped but to the left of the aiming point. Making your adjustment has me drilling bullseyes now. Thank you.
Great video Chris! I've also seen many people at bow shoots having to long of a draw length, causing major face pressure.

Thanks Chris! Working hard to improve my game so I’ll take this under advisement. When i bought my new bow last week i told them my draw length was 28. Both guys on site were instructors and both said my dl was too short. We added a half inch to it and it made a difference. They still think i need to go another 1/2 so I’ll be trying that soon. Again, thx
George told me this two weeks ago when he was working with me at a workshop… we moved my my draw back an inch that day and it felt great… I’ve since moved it another 1/8 of an inch to a clean 29 inches (27.25 pivot point to nock) using the 28.5 mods on my trx36 (had to add 4 twist to the string, all the mods measure about 5/8’s long)… I’ll probably move it back another 1/8 because after I break through the “new toy” feeling, I start to feel the tightness in my shoulders and the pin float pattern he pointed out…. And that was just ONE OF THE SEVERAL THINGS HE WORKED WITH ME ON!!!! If you can get to one of his courses, you will not regret it… he severely under prices them for the information and hands on he gives you… Hey Chris, you should get with a local shop up there and get them to host o workshop with him and you, that would sale like hotcakes!!!

Thanks a lot Chris... So I was occasionally having to adjust my sight. I would usually shoot to the left or right after coming back to the bow after a few days. I could never understand why I kept needing to adjust. Well, I tried the face contact part aftet a few regular shots and to my surprise, after I made sure the string was not on my face with any pressure, my shot began shooting about 6 inches to the right. WTF!!! And the grouping tightened up. Great info bro!!!

Chris, I came back to this video to mention I found having too long draw length was my reason for losing accuracy at longer distances. I thought this was because of not being as precise holding on target but reducing my draw length by only half an inch has made a big difference. I'm sure too short DL would likewise effect accuracy. Thanks for instructional as well as hunting videos.
When i was competing, my holding weight was 18-20lbs.. (this causes more string tension, & is less critical & letoff was much less then.) of course i retired in 2000 (Kirk Ethridge) back then most people had bows with too long a draw length. Keeping scope centered in peep, & having it drawn back exact distance is whats important,, all that hard anchoring on the face just hurts you (use a draw check) I think the many high scores today are because of good coaching/education available today tell george i said hello.. Adopted a very light anchor and my longer range groups (50 yds, 60 yds) definitely tightened up.

Talking about shooting with a to short draw length.
I know to much about that since my DL is 32"
When I started to hunt with a compound bow in 1986 and I was finger shooting, it was extremely hard to find a bow that I could hunt with and have a decent form.
And since I didn't know so much at that time and had no one to teach me, I did a few strange things.
One of them was finger shooting with 2 fingers only with my 70 lbs Bear Hurricane XL bow with way less let off than now as I knew nothing about using 3 fingers on the string.
D loops and releases have made things so very much better.
I remember when there was all this overdraw hype.
A totally stupid idea that I never understood the point of.
Maybe because I already had plenty DL.
I get something for free by having my draw length, but I don't have many bows to choose from.
There have been a few bows over the years that I really wanted to buy, but they never made them for people with my wingspan.

I added a soft rubber kisser button at nose level. It is a very flimsy rubber kisser that even with a bit of pressure wont effect my string movement. I can get that extra point of contact but not direct on the string. It has helped immensely with my accuracy.
Was actually just watching a vid of Griv’s, and you were in it!
One thing I noticed, no one in that vid has a significant bend in your wrist, even yours wasn’t as bad as you were showing here. No one had the forearm higher than the elbow.
For most, that’s an indication of shooting a too long bow, or, more likely, too long of a release head and D-loop.
I’ve found most that aren’t shooting the right draw length are shooting too long of a bow.
I would say, instead of assuming you are too short, simply find the right draw length, and know it can change from bow to bow (long ATA vs short etc)

I always thought and was told that most people are shooting too long of a draw length.
I’m a 28 inch draw and with these newer Mathews they seem to run a little long on me. I’m shooting a 27.5 mod on my V3X and my V3.
But my Triax is a 28 And fits me just as well.

Big fan and many thanks for the insights. I shoot a Mathews phase4 for a year. While adjusting the windage my sight end up partly hidden (right side). What could be the reason behind it ? Is it normal or there is something that requires the adjustment . In the meantime the bow shoots well from up to 75 yards 😃 thank you

Agree on hinge but feel like alot of people get hung up on index finger. U have pressure on that it slows or stops rotation. Like trying to drive fast with parking brake on
Great to meet you at the Kicking Bear Charity! I’m happy I wasn’t embarrassed to about the grain of my arrows, learning that 500 is my spine and I believe The # .245 would be for the grain? I shoot consistently at 40 yrds. Practice will make perfect… up in my tree stand. But I want to make sure I’m working with the proper arrows. 🤙 Your videos are excellent, thank you!
I think .245 is either the inside or outside diameter of your arrow and not your grain u could be wrong tho

I loooooove the nose button...i only touch with my hand and very very light on my nose but i did put a lil nose pressure on as soon as im anchored just to feel exact where on my nose im touching( especially in treestand with frozen nose) then id back off pressure til is almost not touching and that all took time..nose button shortened my sequence a good second, prob closer to 2...as soon as i touch my nose i can tell exactly where im at on my nose and instantly kinda check my pressure and move on through my sequence...there no more almost pause there to get my nose touch point exact..it also made room for a moutain man like beard and stache !!!! Freakin woot !! wich i always had kept cut specifically for archery and lateral string pressure...2 decades ago i tried a littl piece of serving for a nose button wrapped around the string into a lil ball bout size of a brass nock point and waxed it...but the feel is different...felt more presice maybe but it didnt make room tween face and string and still rubbed my nose around to feel exact where i was...so eventually just forgot to put it on during the build or string change and just let it go...when i saw the buttons i gave another shot...i use the small one...it made plenty of room for beard and this winter even when frozen i could still feel those little points...ententionally said no brand..not endorsing nobody...just food for thought

I bought the Hinge 2, but i have an amputation on the tip of my index (right hand). Its recent, and pulling on the release was just too much pressure on the nubby finger. I was sad when I realized that it wouldn't work for me. But I traded them for 3 sticks with 1 step aiders and $50.

What are your thoughts about shortening up draw length a bit to achieve more clearance. ie need to hunt in heavier clothes etc.

that was a much needed video for a lot of us. me included. More like that would be a feast.
I might do it wrong, but I have no face contact to the string at all.
I have my way to anchor and just look through the peep and then it is my sight with the pins.
That is the 3 points I use and have never felt the need for a 4th one by using a kisser or touch some place on my face with the string.
I also normally use a face mask when I hunt and I don't want to get near that when I shoot.
I am not a competition shooter, but I manage plenty fine to hit the kill zone of the animals I hunt out to distances that I normally would not take because of wind, chances for the animal to naturally move to much before the arrow hits and so on.

@chrisbee I have the new V3X33 with the new QAD Mathews integrate dropaway with the micro adjustments.
Shooting Easton FMJ with standard 2” blazer vanes, that usually comes on the arrows.
I can’t decide if I should have the odd vane facing up or out?
The QAD is narrow and my theory is the overall width of vanes is less if the odd vane is up because it puts the vanes in a downward angle.
I stopped shooting a bow 15 years ago. Got back into it and boy have I been struggling….
And now that it’s bow here in Michigan it’s even harder to get a buddy to watch over and criticize form and whatnot lol
