Bought my first bow (Hoyt powermax) back in January and have absolutely fell in love with archery. 20-40 yards and I'm busting through fletchings with my groups, but I shoot hundreds of arrows a week. Started on 60lb draw weight and draw length was somewhere in between but couldn't get comfortable. My d-loop started to fray and with the virus I was unable to go to any shops because they're all closed. So found this video and it saved me!! I used bcy 24 spectra and put my d-loop at an inch so now my draw length is perfect. Also, I now have my bow maxed out at 70lbs and everything is working perfectly. Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the videos and information.

Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

I am so glad I found and watched this video. I am a left handed bullshooter. And my pro shop. ties my D loop. for a right handed shooter. I will now be telling my own D loops. Most of my bulwark. I will be doing at home from now on. Instead of waiting to get to a bow shop. spent the last two years. buying the equipment necessary. For working on my bows. I never did think about. the loop direction. since my pro shop. said they tied it in properly. Now I see it has been improper. It explains the extra torque on my bowstring.
This is extremely helpful. No one has ever explained it this way before and why. I have watched so many video's on d loops and I could never remember which way to do it correctly. This explains it so clearly and will always help me remember which way to tie it in. Thank you. Keep up the great content.

I just followed your instructions how to setup the loop for left hand and it worked like charm. I wish you were making some bow shooting classes. It will be really useful and fun.
I really appreciate your extreme attention to detail. Also the fact that you don’t lock out comments on your videos. I am new to archery and have no knowledge really to speak of in this so it’s a HUGE deal for beginners to be able to ask questions. I knew some bow hunters when I was a kid but they are all old crotchety guys now and won’t even answer questions. It’s really a comfort knowing there are some knowledgeable guys out there that truly want to educate people on the proper ways of doing things. The nearest pro shop to me won’t even touch my bow because I bought it at bass pro shop. So I’m literally on my own short of an almost 2 hour drive for 5 minutes of bow adjustment so thank you a ton.

I got the nose button awhile back and noticed improvement. Before that, I had the string on the side/tip of my big beak😂. With that being said, I’ve been having trouble getting consistency in the feel of pull on my Silverback tension release. I watched this video today and while my loop was tied correctly by the shop when they put on my new strings, they had it at 1/2 inch. I re-tied a new one per your instruction. This time at 3/4 inch and I’m shooting incredibly better. My best guess is that the shorter 1/2 loop was squeezing the caliper and causing it to fire unreliably as far as the tension I had to impart to actuate it. I can’t thank you enough for this small but very positively impacting tip. Between the nose button and the d-loop tip, you helped me a lot . You rock!

Thank you. I thought I had tied my D loop in correctly till I found the buttons on the same side. And, I now have the buttons correct to the riser so I have the correct twist even though I'm an index finger shooter.

I like white D-loop #34 in a role. No dye.
I also tie a reverse D-loop. The concept of the ball end facing the shooter is on the bottom, that doesnt change.
But the D-loop comes from the very top and very bottom.
I found out doing it this way causes both strands to tighten evenly upon install. It distributes the weight evenly at the base of the knot reducing the chance of serving separation.
Some really good tips. I usually have serving above and below the nock, but will try just serving underneath the nock in future...

Thanks Josh, I bought the Easton D-loop pliers @ the beginning of the year cuz of this video. This weekend I brought home a new bow I dropped off @ the bowshop the 1st week of February. They never touched it & I know the draw length is a hair short. I bought this bow so I could have a backup bow ready to go in August. I'm ordering the Spectra D-loop material tonight since I bought 2 other BCY products back when I ordered the pliers but I didn't order the D23 loop material. I remembered that I watched this video last winter & liked it cuz I shoot the same release as u & I wanted a longer d loop for forgiveness & it helps that I can go 1" since a standard loop doesn't allow me to hit a perfect anchor point cuz I'm an in betweener. The pliers look like the right tool for a longer loop but the material I have here doesn't meet my high standards. Wish more people would watch this. U r the only video I could find where the person isn't standing on 1 side of the press which makes it frustrating when they tie the knots with 1 hand in the way. I actually tied in my nock points but I want to do the process once right than shoot this bow for the 1st time. Half measures only end up with half ass results & we owe it to the animals we hunt to be dead nuts on.
I like the way you make something that's really easy to do seem complicated.

Thank you for doing this, not everyone knows this. I was taught wrong by a big name in the industry and I had now idea. I was finally taught the right way by an old timer at the club and it’s the only way that makes sense. We need you to do more of these style videos cause there is a lot of people out there blind following their favorite personality and doing whatever he says and it’s half wrong. Thanks again.

Your info is spot on. I had my loop tied backwards and the loop would always sit crooked and mess my peep up. Now that I have it correct everything is spot on. The 23 is vastly superior! Especially when running a hinge or thumb. I precut and burn a length of 4.5" and it gives me a perfect length of around .75-1" final loop length.

Just switched to a thumb release and this helped me greatly. I was papertuning and was noticing funky tears watched this grabbed some bcy 23 tied 3/4” to 1” d loop and back to bullet holes. Thanks for this.

Absolutely true, as far as keeping unwanted torque out of the apex of drawn string.
Very good video for newer archers although you forgot to mention which side of the nocking point top or bottom you were trying to describe which side the loop over should be for a right handed archer....more experienced archers will be able to see your peepsight(top) to the left but it was not deliberately stated prior to explaining which side the mushroom should be on.
Otherwise great video for beginners
So what side should it be on? Not being a smart ass I just switched to a hand held realease that's why I'm asking.
@@keld6539 Fyi; the part of the knot that encases the other wraps of rope and therefore squezez tension on other wraps is called a "bight"(bite). that being said if you are right handed, the top knot of d-loop will have the "bight" on left of bow string if your looking at it right side up and from bow string to riser(like your firing an arrow). Then the bottom knot of d-loop will have "bight" on right side of bow string. Also keep mushroomed ends as far away from nocking point. @@disguy4729 wow, you explained it thousand times harder than it needs to be… the top side of the loop should be facing the shooter regardless of hes left or righthanded… and the bottom button should be facing away from the shooter. Also the buttons should face away from the loop in the nut on each side…
I had to pull out my release and look. You state that you tie the D- loop this way to avoid torque on the string, but then as you come to anchor the D loop puts CCW torque on the string. If you tie it the opposite way, as you draw back there is some slight CW torque on the string, but as you come to anchor the loop returns to it's neutral position and negligible torque while be applied to the string.
I thought I was going crazy. He’s completely correct with the tying the knots opposite sides because of torque but he’s doing it backwards. He’s lining it up with the release, it’s supposed to be opposite angle of the release so the jaws or hook goes through it without twisting. He made a 25 minute video calling out the pros showing everyone the wrong way but in fact that’s what he’s doing. FOR EVERYONE WATCHING THIS! THIS IS INCORRECT AND COMPLETELY BACKWARDS!

Josh! I checked my D-loop. O-Man! The button on top pointing left and the button on bottom pointing right.
Im a right hand draw. The Bow shop agrees this is wrong. Also below about the .021 on bottom and .014 on top with a little slop/room for nock👍. I concur your method! So my loop serving was non existant, D-Loop installed wrong from a shop that I dropped 2k in for a DoubleXL Hoyt on. Thanks for the education. Good work!

It is actually his loop that is backwards.. the melted top button should be facing you and the bottom away from you.. So he explained right but did the opposite of what he described… kinda dumb actually..

I'm not a bow hunter so it might be different but as a target shooter I would not want that much nock movement. Then again I also tie on some nocking points too so there is less contact with the nock than you get with just d-loop knots. The wiggle room I leave is maybe a millimeter or the thickness of a piece of serving...two at the most. Other than that the tips on tying the knots was spot on and the tip on length was good too and about what most target shooters use. I would also encourage archers to really tighten down the knots as you tie them with needle nose pliers, so they are tight all the way thru. If you wait and tighten them with say needle nose pliers at the end buy stretching the loop open, you run the risk of having a knot with the outside loops loser than the inside ones. Plus putting too much torque with pliers to tighten the knots afterwards can cause the serving to separate. Just my two cents.

Yo you're not going to believe this I went to Bass Pro Shop and tried to explain to them what you're saying in your video he argued with me the whole time told me how he hates thumb releases. eventually I got him to do it the way I wanted him to do it. He tried ruined my whole day but when I got home and shot with it... you were correct I can totally feel the difference!!! Thank you

This has been a super helpful video. I started out shooting my bow setup at 29" draw and learned later that I am actually a 28.5" draw. My bow wont do half inch so its now set to 28" and it feels strange cause Im now anchoring in a different spot. Ive been wonder if I could do a longer D loop to help get me back to a slightly further back anchor point.

I'm curious: Have you ever thought about trying Griv's torqueless d-loop?
BCY 23 spectra is a staple for my bows. The only thing to caution people on is using jaw style releases since the d loop is slightly thinner... but its a superior material to the standard 24 most people use. The 23 spectra is way more durable indeed. Harder to burn the ends well but you get used to it over time. It also has more "slip" to it making a nice crisp and super repeatable release... The 24 d loop is fine too, but if you are trying to get the absolute most out of your bow then its worth a try. If your bow is not already tuned to the absolute highest degree then it should not be a concern until you have everything else dialed.
Great job on the video. Your explanation was great. One thing I'm confused on though is your logic for the way your tied in the twist. The way i see it, its backwards. By going on the outside on the top and the inside on the bottom, you put a slight clockwise twist into the d loop. So when you attach your thumb release and draw the bow, you will be rotating the release counter clock wise as you come to full draw thus putting more twist in the D loop that way. Or what am I not understanding??
I see the same issue. Especially when he drew it back.
I believe its because the jaws of the releases have to cross the string at a right angle to hold and release d loop, not be held vertically inline with the D-loop.
@@rickokain3853 Yeah, but that just proves their point more. The jaws of the release runs parallel to the string, twisting in an anti-clockwise direction. He has it twisted in a clockwise direction. I've been doing it the other way for years.

I believe Josh has been doing the right thing but just only presenting in opposite direction incidentally in the video.
I need to take my words back, Josh is correct. I read all the comments and wished to find Josh's repy on this, it doesn't make sense that he missed this so obvious point. Finally, I found he actually already explained several times in the comments, quoted as below. I have to say he's really a professional! Just a little suggestion, maybe in future it'll be good to explain how it works too for such confusing cases.

The melted Ball of the D-loop pushes the loop the opposite direction of the direction of the knot. (counter clockwise) try it yourself, and you'll see after a few shots your D-loop will have a perfect counter clockwise twist in it tying it this way. it's actually opposite to what you would think, because every D-loop has to have the melted ends to make it safe to shoot. Due to the size of the melted balls, it pushed the D-Loop the opposite direction, again in this scenario it, it would be counter clockwise.
trust me I've spoken with a lot of ACTIVE world champs and other other very high level active shooters and they ALL tie their d-loop in this way.

The way you exaggerated the twist in the d-loop is the opposite of how it will naturally twist when tied and shot. I know this because I tie mine the exact opposite of this and it naturally twists the way you are exaggerating it in the video (Which is the wrong way you want the d-loop to twist for handheld releases!). Either way you are showing the right way to tie a d-loop in this video, it was just a little confusing when watching. I can't believe I haven't noticed this earlier and I am going to switch the way I tie mine immediately! Great video and keep up the great work!
