  • Many B9 S4s are experiencing an annoying exhaust rattle related to the active exhaust system. Some S4s, like mine, even throw fault codes including P0477, P0475, and P049F showing there is a problem with the valves. This is often caused by a weak or broken spring inside the exhaust door control unit. Interestingly Dodge Charger and Challenger models have the same Küster brand actuators flaps/valves inside their exhaust too. Facing the same issues a newer spring has been made available by Mopar that eliminates the rattle.
    I'm not the first to discover this by any means. There are a variety of posts discussing this issue, this one from DuntLed_Racing is especially insightful:
    www.audizine.com/forum/showth...
    Per the manual the simplest way to do this process would be to drop the rear exhaust hangers (shown in video) and pop out the other hangers as needed to get clearance. Having the exhaust off completely makes for a nicer video though.
    The new part number is: 68319331AA

      Your post is really great, definitely confirmed some of my assumptions when I started researching. Fingers crossed, but it makes sense that it would fix it. I also wonder why the old style spring was used. Dodge had a TSB about this in 2016 with the replacement part number. It's slightly disappointing to find problems that were solved two years before your car was made.

    Thanks for the video. I had those two codes show up for me as well. I bought the springs and replaced both sides and it fixed the code on one side but I still get a code on the other side.
    Could it be an issue with the plug/wiring? What do you suggest?

    Did you also notice the rattle on acceleration as well? Or just start up? I notice a rattle sometimes and thought that could also we this causing it.

      I've def got the rattle on startup and under light acceleration when the valves are closed or partially open. Sounds like a tin can rattling around back there. Funny enough I had a 2017 Charger Daytona and the same thing happened about 5k miles into ownership haha.

    I was able to do it with the exhaust still on, you need 8mm ratcheting wrenches that are small. Super easy, the spring aligned by itself and I did it blind at no point could I see the perch.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Рік тому

      Definitely do-able with exhaust on the car, glad it worked out for you. One potential risk is you could invert the operation of the valves when installing the spring blind, but you should be good if it's behaving as expected.

    • @DmitrysGarage

      You could do this, but I would recommend using the plug-in simulators to prevent the codes from being thrown. There is some evidence that it affects performance if the car things the valves aren't functional. For example it may think they're stuck closed.

    I just bought a B9 SQ5 and I get the rattling sound on some cold starts. I also get rattling and weird vibrating feeling when going over bumps or pot holes. The previous owner did install an AWE exhaust. Does anyone think that my exhaust could be the culprit, given the fact that I also feel the shakiness/vibration and hear the rattling/clunky sounds on the passenger side; or does it sound more like a suspension problem?
    Magically, the dealership cannot replicate the issue when I bring the car to them.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Рік тому +1

      Honestly its really hard to know without seeing/hearing it. The valve issue doesn’t seem to be bump dependent. U could always take it to an exhaust shop and ask them to look. Its only going to take them a few minutes to rattle the exhaust around.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  2 роки тому

      @@allenz4772 So the plugs are connected? If the plugs are in and it's happening maybe they're not functioning as expected, I'd see if AWE can confirm.
      When you accelerate, even in Comfort and normal D trans mode, the ECU will open the valves over a certain RPM for exhaust flow. I imagine this is when it does this check, hence acceleration tripping it. There is some evidence that the car will have reduced performance during acceleration if it thinks the valves are broken. Supposedly this is in case the valves are broken and blocking exhaust flow.

    • @allenz4772
      @allenz4772 2 роки тому

      @@DmitrysGarage sorry they are plastic caps you put over plugs that were disconnected from exhaust valve. You might be right, ecu might throw a code as it tries to open them. I'll have to contact awe and see what they say. Do you think it will affect the performance? Also I'm getting a boost pressure code that no one knows why, this starts to make sense now. Because of your video I'm on to something, thanks.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Allen, were they just caps? Not simulators? Simulators look sorta like the female portion of the plug on the factory exhaust. They trick thr ecu into thinking you still have valves. I figured they included them. You might just need simulators. I was under impression awe included simulators not caps.
