    Great video. I learned a little trick when doing a topside oil change. If you are really worried about getting out all of the old oil, after you pump out as much oil as you can, keep the vacuum running and pour some fresh oil in the oil filler inlet (and the filter area). You’ll start to see more oil come up the tube, then you should start to see fresh oil. Might make it a little more difficult to check without a dipstick but it shouldn’t take much oil to do this.

      Thats a great tip Scott. Im not very worried personally because i realize we’re talking about a shot glass or two worth of oil. Considering modern oil capacities, it is just sooooo insignificant. The nay sayers can come in force though. Ive seen other creators actually drop an oil pan to show how dry it really is and how no imaginary gunk is left behind. This is a great idea for anyone paranoid about it. Appreciate you watching!

    Very helpful video, today i worked on a 2018 Audi S4 3.0l and it was so much of a pain. I didn't even know they have that type of oil plug and when we tried to take it out, it got damaged so we had to get a new oil plug for it. Eventually i got the new oil plug, put the new one on. I went to All Data to look up how many quarts and type of filter it takes and it said for 2017-2021 3.0 S4, 7.7 qts. So i got that, put the new oil in. I think i unfortunately spilled a little bit of oil on the engine because when I started the engine. I saw a little smoke and burned oil smell. I check to make sure the oil cap and filter were on and on correctly and they were and then i noticed it was coming from probably where i spilled a little bit of oil on the engine. So i just went and clean it off and no smoke after that. I didn't even know till i watched this video about how they don't have dipsticks, instead theyy got the oil level reader in the screen. Hopefully i did the car right, i always double check everything as well. Thanks for making this video and got to learn something new today.

    Dmitry, I think it's worth mentioning that not just any old 0W-20 should be used. V.A.G. specifically states that VW 508.00 and 509.00 certification should be used in these engines. There's a sticker under the hood that specifies this. I found Mobil 1 ESP x2 full synthetic 0W-20 at my local Auto Zone for $11.00/qt. Ouch. Especially when it takes most of 8 quarts! • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage 2 місяці тому

      I didn't want to replace the crush washer. Ultimately when you do this you have the amount you removed, the stated capacity, and the amount you put in. So you can estimate how much was left, and it's a very small amount. You have over 7 liters of oil going in this thing, whatever tiny amount left doesn't matter at all. Furthermore if you look at dry sump cars, such as my C8 corvette, those have multiple liters of oil you can't remove from the engine/sump during a normal oil change. You'd have to remove the engine to get all the oil out. It's still not a problem because of the immense oil capacity used.

The oil pan on these cars seems pretty flat and judging by where the tube is inserted to suck the oil out, I would think the tube would be able to suck from the lowest point of the oil pan and get it all. When you put in a new filter, the new oil will have to fill that filter up. I'm curious, have you checked, verified, how much oil a used filter is holding?
    When you looked up the electronic oil level it showed full. After you started the engine and let it run for a bit, to get the new oil circulating and filling the oil filter, did you have to add more oil? If so, how much? I would guess that the additional amount is the amount that is taken up by the oil filter. Thanks for the video. 👍

    • @DmitrysGarage

      You are correct the filter housing has oil in it. I do loosen it to get that oil in the vid. The specified fill quantity includes the filter. So if you suck all the oil out and put the exact amount in you should show full. Keep in mind that oil level in the DIC represents the last quart of oil. So even if it falls a small amount on the bar its like a shotglass worth of oil. This engine has a gigantic oil capacity.

    Was it just good luck (a vestigial leftover, if you like) that this Audi had an oil dipstick tube installed? Or did they do that on purpose, so they could do a topside oil extraction?

    • @DmitrysGarage

      They use the dipstick tube for both checking oil and extracting oil at the dealer service centers. They have a sort of universal dipstick with different markings for different configurations. You can buy one of those as well, but they're not something you can leave in the car. Yea it is common now across a lot of VAG products, the whole tube and no dipstick thing.

    So I've always wondered, isn't it better when the oil is drained out from the bottom? I don't know why German cars were designed in a way where they have to suck up the oil? Does that not leave a lot of residue at the bottom of the tank that leads to build up and deterioration of the engine??

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage 10 місяців тому +1

      You can still drain it from the bottom, but sucking it out is the primary way in the factory service manual. You’re only leaving a tiny bit of oil behind at most, maybe a shot glass or two worth. Either way it doesn’t really matter, because you’re going to add many liters of new oil which will mix with what is left and you have a new filter, so no this won’t cause buildup. As an example some cars have dry sump systems (like my c8) and you leave multiple liters of old oil that you can’t remove without removing the engine and it’s still not a problem.

    Hi everybody just wanted to add in, make sure you call the dealer to find the right oil type. In my Massachusetts climate my vehicle takes 5w-40. I almost made the mistake of putting in 0w-20. Changing the viscosity hurts the car in the long run my friends

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage 2 роки тому

      I would always suggest the manual over the dealer. Unfortunately dealers do not always do everything correctly. Im not aware of any B9 S4s with the 3.0T engine that call for 5w-40 as a factory fill. Though I have seen some people choose to run this viscosity. The factory fill is 0w20.
      EDIT: Also per the manual this b-cycle engine needs a specific 0w20. If you are under warranty I would personally stick to the exact factory fill Audi calls for. If the dealer wants to pour in 5w40 thats fine as you can blame them if there are any issues. If you DIY and use the wrong oil I can see Audi trying to blame you when the dealer tries to authorize warranty work. The specific oil is UV reactive and has a dye added to it. Not hard to tell if the wrong stuff was used. Castrol makes it for Audi and there are only two SKUs, a Castrol one that is hard to get in North America and an Audi branded one that is easier to get.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage Рік тому +2

      Hey so I personally own two of the pumps. One for extracting used products and one for injecting new products (think transmissions and diffs). The clean one is much easier to maintain to reduce cross contamination, you just wipe up and use a bit of alcohol on a rag and throw the rag away. For the used product one, sometimes I do need to clean it up. Either I did a diesel vehicle with a ton of sulfur soot or I had brake fluid in there and don't want to mix brake fluid into my waste oil drum (for recycling purposes). In that case it's best to use an APC (all purpose cleaner) like simple green, a degreaser, or again isoproyl alcohol. Throw some in, lock it up, swirl hard, spit it out into a container you can use to recycle/properly dispose (i.e. with your old brake fluid). You don't need to add a ton of it. The main thing with the dirty pump is to avoid gumming it up. I think if you want to use one pump for clean and dirty fluids you may find it requires a lot of cleaning depending on how OCD you are about contamination.

If you're tracking the car, make a lot more power than stock or are in a very hot climate (think Phoenix, Houston, etc...) then you might consider 5w-40 and shorter change intervals. I personally change much sooner but i have double the stock horsepower now with the big turbo. I also live in a very hot climate and i run my cars very hard. You have to use good judgement. In my case changing oil much earlier is best, but you can also do oil analysis where they can tell you how good the oil still is. Ive sent off 10k mile samples on stock cars like when i has my b9 a4 or when my b9 s4 was still stock and drivel mildly, and the labs said the oil is still in good shape.

      Every audi service center here does it this way so I don’t know where you work. What’s your main concern with this method? The process is documented in Erwin in the factory maintenance docs so clearly it is an acceptable practice since Audi/VAG literally document it. The filter picks up debris and you can, and should, cut it open to spread and check the pleats for metal. This car has a massive oil capacity. You see how much oil you take out vs put in so at most you will miss a thimble full which given the capacity is completely irrelevant. The drain plug exists because not every car owner or potential service center can extract oil.
