Rattle sound fixed! Worst customer ever

- When my Wife first told me her Audi SQ5 had a rattle in the front suspension I admittingly had a hard time locating the source of the rattle. Some of the front suspension was due for an update anyway so after replacing the front struts, strut mounts, front upper control arms, front thrust bushings, engine mounts... That annoying rattle was still there! It drove me crazy trying to locate this rattle. I hope this helps anyone who might be running into the same problem. Thanks for watching!

Thank you to Paul at ShopDap.com, he let me know these brake rotors have been updated a few times from Audi. Possibly because of this very issue. Check out factory brake discs here: www.shopdap.com/4h0-615-301-an-vw-audi.html

Hey Jamie! Have you ever heard of this? On my 06 bmw 325i, the stock pro radio, when I’m listening to music in aux or radio, it randomly changes to CD player. I can’t figure it out. I can change it back or leave it for a moment and it will switch back. And along with that, when I unlock my car, the cd player is doing something, I can hear the noise likes it’s switching disc or something, and the car isn’t even turned over or in accessory mode. Wtf? Lol only solution I can think is just replace the head unit oem or aftermarket. Any suggestions ?
Hi Jamie, excellent video as it has solved my issue with my SQ5. I have exactly the same issue as yours and it also drove my insane trying to find it. Just concerned that if using the same product again by Zimmermann whom make them for Audi I believe will you be replacing them again if the same problem arises? Mine have only been on the car for under a year and they failed! Not to sure if I will go back to the similar product here in Australia, do you know if the issue has been resolved with this rotor ?
@@djcjohns1133 The brake rotors that made noise where factory Audi brake rotors. The fix in this video was Zimmerman rotors. As of today, that noise hasn’t come back. Hope this helps 🤘
@@JamiesGarage1 Hi Jamie thanks for that info just as a matter of interest how long have the Zimmermann rotors been back on the car.
Just needs a louder radio to get rid of the interior creaking sound. Nice job being relentless finding the brake noise!
That’s what I said! 😂
Of course, when mechanics are in a hurry to fix our loved ones cars, we get out the parts cannon! "It probably needs one anyway". Nice find, much safer car now.
Noise is the hardest diagnosis tho.
did you miss the part where he replaced the entire front end first? lol
@@theginjaninja9768 that's the parts cannon.
It’s so satisfying when you finally diagnose a problem like that!
It is a two piece just like the e60 rear. They’re riveted. Fascinating story behind that but it does reduce rotation weight obviously.
Fixed this a hundred times, it’s a rattle you get to know with more experience. Good job getting the less known problems!
You are a life saver!! I have been chasing this rattle for at least 6 months!! Had done everything under the sun!! I have been saved, lol. I have a 2015 Audi A8
Great diagnostics!
Currently hearing a rattling sound in my Audi Q7 when driving thought it would be because of ball joints going bad but I’m going to check the rotors now.
YES!!! I have! Thank you soooo much! Now I know that stupid rattle. going to show my mechanic this right away! Thanks. This was perfect. I thought it was coming from the strut towers too! I'm so glad I didn't drop the coin for the repair! Awesome!
Bro I been chasing a rattle for a year and I pray you just found it!!!!
I think the pins must be pressed from the
outside round part of the rotor. Defective if you ask me . Great job
Thank you for sharing. What a great catch. You saved many people a lot of head scratching and frustration. 😊
Mocking chrisfix with the "before after" thing 😂😂
Yup lexus this issue on all its 2 piece rotors, they made a special part for these special customers. 1 piece rotor conversion.
lol 0:14 I also find my partner annoying…. You are not alone. Great to know you’ve fixed it! Next time, advise turn up sound system volume??
Oh yeah dude. There is a TSB on this. The floating brake rotors. A lot of newer German cars are bringing them. Audi/Porsche it's a top complaint.
Sadly, I've seen them rattle right out of the box. The parts department just has them stacked on shelves, which causes unnecessary strain, and can loosen the pins or rivets. Whatever you want to call them.
Reminds me of the shaking front-end and steering wheel of my wife’s Murano. For 12 years since almost new her steering wheel would shake when driving between 55-70mph, which covers like 90% of our commute. We spent thousands of dollars on rotations, balancing, alignments, new wheels, new tires, new struts, and much more including all the payments in dead-end diagnostics fees and after 12 years we finally replaced the car because it needed a new catalytic converter that even after market was worth more than the car and the last straw.
That’s wild woulda never thought
Nice diagnosis. Tricky hidden rattle. Wow.
Dude….calling in from Australia here.
I have a 2015 q7 (4M). I bought the car a year and a half ago and have had this bloody annoying rattle in the front left “suspension” since the day I got it. I changed everything under the sun to try and find it. Changed shockers, upper control arms, bushes etc….just like you.
Removed the sway bar…..and even clamped the brake line and drove around without the caliper on to try and find it.
I’ve gone as far as mounting a GoPro under the car to see if I could see anything moving. No joy there either.
Audi themselves had the car for nearly two weeks trying to find the rattle and ended up telling me it must be structural damage due to a previous accident.
I’ve searched youtube and google HUNDREDS, of times trying to find an answer to the most annoying rattle in the history of mankind……..and your video never popper up. Then, for some reason this morning it popped up as a suggested video…..and I have to tell you mate, today you changed my world.!
No more embarrassing rattle, no more annoying speedhump noises. No more curious wondering as I drive along.
And yes….as much as im ecstatic to have found the problem, im super
Embarrassed that I didn’t find it sooner. The fact that it went away when I put my foot on the brake should have been a dead giveaway…..but I just for some reason never suspected the rotor. After all, when the wheel is on its bolted in hard right??….wrong!!!
As soon as I finish this comment, I’m
Off to the shop for a new rotor.
Thanks so much man. So thankful.
Well, never had it.. but because I watched this video.. I guess next week or the week after I’ll be meeting the problem..
"Hoever, Did you hear that" 🤣🤣🤣
I ❤ the backseat angel 😇, that was super tricky, last thing on the planet earth I would think about it.
That is a compound rotor. The hat and rotor are separate parts to allow the disc to expand radially as the brake rotors get hotter.
Allows the rotor to be made from two different materials to reduce weight. The aluminum rotor hat saves weight but expands at a different rate than the steel friction disc.
Oh, my F*cking Crimany... I feel your pain, there, buddy. Now, I see why the mechanics couldn't figure out what was wrong with our (more the wife's) old truck (granted, it's absolutely f*cking irritating (and yes, it is guaranteed to piss anyone off) and realistically, can be dangerous as Hell if left untouched).
I had my (ex)wife (who was with child, at the time) in the vehicle with me, and it drove me insane, wondering what was going on with the truck/SUV her parents had given us... just remembering that point in time pisses me off.
🤦🤦😑😑
I never saw this issue, and I lost count how many brakes I've done over decades. My guess these pins are press fit and they did not go all the way in. Maybe on a Friday end of shift at the factory. 😅 Now one more check to do, thankfully this set up is not the norm. I also take care of my wife's car, so I make sure all is in perfect condition. We both know why.😉
Great video. Does your SQ5’s moon roof also rattle? Ours is horrific. 2014 TDI.
Classic sunroof rattle 😂
I love my European cars (2bmws, 2vws) but they sure know how to over engineer the hell out of the simplest of items.
Had a loose axle nut that caused a similar noise, the hub rotated faster than rotor somehow i figured it out by rotating axle by hand back and worth and saw that my axle will move before the wheel started to move
I have a similar issue on my FZR400 motorcycle, when on the brakes and going over a bump it clunks hard, its just the rivets for the floating rotors, its not like your issue though where it happens all the time
FULL FLOATING BRO.. ...
Wholesome content
OMG, I had the SAME ISSUE with my wife's CR-V...my solution was slightly different than yours, though.
I just divorced her. Problem solved.
Good job Nice Audi
My front driver side rotor is missing the o ring that goes around the hub to help hold it and still doesn't rattle like that.
I have had that issue for many years! But then again...my wife has given me 4 wonderful children ( or wasn't you asking about a difficult customer? )😜🤘
A pain in the ass wife? yes sir. Married 20 years. Lol
That is a 2 piece rotor, 2 piece rotor means 2 separate pieces of materials. Doesn’t really mean you can take it apart
Wait what it took you one year to repair your wifes car? Holy moly glad you are still inside the house 🤓😂
I have a weird rattle, when at a stop, sounds like a little metalic rattle. On park or when riding it never makes a sound. Pull great etc. No codes anything. Jetta 2012 2.5. What could it be?
ah, right at the end, we find what the squeaky noise is....
Creaking? Sunroof Frame. TSB
I had a really bad constant groaning and whining sound from the passenger front sound while driving.
It stopped after I dropped the wife off and drove back home on my own..
I have the same problem, she tells me how to drive.
Thumbs up!
Alternative video: Just buy a Corolla for your wife :)
She likes fun cars 😉
Hey I would like to know if you know need one in Baltimore Maryland who can fix audi cars
Yup...I have nieces that are like your wife wife complaints. 😅
❤
awesome german engineering.
why not a BMW for her
You coulda bought a Lexus hehe
She's too pretty for you son 🤣🤣
Over engineered German crapminship. Why bother with a 2 piece rotor? I have 2 piece floating rotors on my Suzuki sport touring bike. Never any problems. I dunno…buy Japanese.
There’s a lot of quality problems with car parts nowadays. We need to get manufacturing back in America and set harsh tariffs on these countries.
This reminds me of a nightmare sound issue I had on a customer car when I worked at Subaru. High-pitched whine sound between 40-60mph, thought it was sus, wheels, bearing, etc. Turned out one of the brake lines had gotten bent up just enough to barley rub on the frame and cause that sound, took 3 days just to figure it out.
What a serious kick in the pants. By far one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a flat rate tech. Love your videos and how you shoot them to show the process/explain stuff. Im an A level Chrysler tech with over 10 years experience. We recently started having to send videos to customers and from the start I’ve spent the time to really show and explain what’s wrong with their vehicle. Customers leave good reviews mentioning my name, I’ve had customers come personally thank me, management has nothing but the best things to say about me, even the owner has recognized me. So thank you for inspiring my video production at work. It’s made selling work for customer safety and upsells so much easier.
Video inspections are the future. Sounds like you really embraced it. Good job 👊
And that's why people start their owns shops.... IM IN BRO
I really like you taking us along and explain your problem solving tips and tricks.
Never in my 20+ years of owning several 100 cars have I ever seen this issue before. I would have had the whole suspension redone, there no human on this planet that would have found that problem.
Creaking noise is a sunroof frame, there is a bulletin to help the noise a bit but if that doesn’t work, needs an entire frame, good luck! Great video as usual
My sunroof makes my brain hurt
@@dave1096 Mines make that same damn creaking noise. Had it removed and checked out and still creaking. HELP PLEASE?
Love the surprise towards the end
Me too ;)
You fixed something and your wife was grateful?! You lucky bastard!
My wife rattles a lot too but I still haven’t found the right part to fix it…
I had the same issue and was able to diagnose the problem..... unfortunately there is no fix for having screws loose in the head
My wife had a rattle on her Q5 was driving me nuts, finally tracked it down to the sunroof. Fully opened and closed the sunroof and noise has been gone for a week now!
That’s the strangest rotor shake, I have ever seen. I appreciate the info.
Hi Jamie, love the video! I was in contact with you around 6 months ago with the same problem here in Australia. Well we put on new set of Zimmerman rotors on and guess what, we are experiencing the same issue again. Quite a grey area with the sellers of this brand of rotor saying they have never seen this issue ever? Well I have experienced it twice now hopefully we can get a warranty claim because to me it is not normal for a rotor the become loose on the hat. I think we will be going after another brand !
Have you tried another brand yet? Im just about to advise my customer with the fix
hi jamie. thanks for this video. i have this noise on my 2012 toyota RAV4. its driving me insane and i cant tell where it was coming from i had changed the brake discs last month and ever since it has started makeing that noise. im going to have to go back to the shop but i doubt they will do anything.
A few decades ago a brake rotor on my dad's Jeep XJ sheared so smoothly where the pressed hat was welded to the cast chinesium that no sounds could be heard when applying the brakes. I've never used those type rotors again as I've heard of more examples of rotors shearing the welds.
Great content brother!!! You’re doing things right! Family man, business man, and funny man. Good stuff
I had the same problem for me replace about the whole front suspension turn out it was the steering shaft was worn it only rattle/clunk on bumps
You figure out that creaking noise (and not replace the pano)…let me know!
The last noise is the sunroof. Need to clean out the rails and I think there is some lube you can buy
Sun roof rattles are the worst in sq5 Audis, I have had 3 and all rattle
good to know even the best of mechanics have to deal with minor annoyances with their cars lol
have to comment, you’re the man, love your videos, i can truly sympathize, after many years of being in a european shop, by necessity, one had to become a “master” of rattles, nice work
That would have driven me crazy. Glad you found the problem.
That seems to be the dumbest design of a rotor I’ve ever seen, but I’m no engineer
I have a question. For 6 months I have been dealing with these check engine light codes.
P0420 p0430 catalyst system below threshold bank 1 and 2
P0455 large evap leak detected
P0457 evap leak fuel cap loose
Cylinder 3 misfire detected
My car battery recently went bad about 10 days ago. I Replaced the battery and the check engine light went away and hasn't come back on in 10 days. It's hard to believe replacing my car battery fixed my check engine light codes?
women always right...😂😂😂
I have had a unsolvable mystery noise much like this on my B6 Passat. I was so stoked to check and see if this was the problem but, alas, it was not. Anyone have any suggestions?
Plot twist, Jamie is now dead.....
Haha!
What are sticky backs if I may ask?
The back of the pad sticks to the face of the piston and keeps the pad from rattling around in the caliper. You can buy high heat sticky 2 sided sticky pads for the back of the pads or you can get it in paste form
@@JamiesGarage1 this is very helpful because I work at an Audi dealer in Wisconsin and I have had a few issues because of pads not staying where they're supposed to. Any products you recommend?
@@fabi1013 CRC Disc Brake Quiet works pretty well and you can find it at any parts store
Ran in to the phantom noise situation recently. Heard a squeak every time the car jostled. Turns out some kind of filler foam in the b-pillar was rubbing.
😯
I had rattling noise also replaced bunch of parts, until found the actual issue. One of the dozens bolts in multilink suspension just was loose
I actually solved many suspension noises due to loose bolts. It’s always the first thing I check now
Jamie - Great video! I have a 2016 A8L (3.0T w/64k miles) I have an indiscriminate chirping noise coming from the left rear shock as I go over different kinds of road grades. It's not as crazy as your brake rotor rattle, but it sounds like I have a bird trapped in there. Any ideas?
Jamie - Great video and thanks for sharing your discovery. I have a 2016 Audi A8L Quattro (64k miles, 3.0T) that has a shock "chirping noise) that's coming from the left rear of the car. I didn't run over a bird or have a bird trapped in there. It's indiscriminate. It's only when I roll over an imperfection in the road grade. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Any ideas?
Thanks very much. I subscribed!
Ur wife is ur worst customer? Bruh
I have that problem a lot!
Darling our BMW M5 is always breaking down on you.
This Porsche Panamera Turbo really isn't fast enough.
Can you drive (760Li) more smoothly please? Ahem!...
But come on, you have a four post lift and a warm garage like every other dealer who replaces everything and it is always the LAST THING THEY REPLACE that is the problem
Great video!!! I have a 2014 A8L, with 125K on it (runs great except for that damn noise) I checked my rotors and did not find the issue. However, it certainly seems like it's the struts. On that note, would you know a reputable strut OEM re-building company I can use as the dealer is quoting $2,800 for each strut new? Help!
Thank you for this interesting video! I'm getting married soon so I definitely need this for the poor car 😅
@Jamie's Garage the F86 X6M and F85 X5M have a tick/click sound that only happens when you turn the wheel. It's the fucking rotor.. There is a service bulletin on it.. The fix is to put a little friction disc on the hub... Its irritating AF.
This is what happens when you buy overpriced crap like BMW Mercedes and of course Audi. Next time buy something reliable something that you can easily drive 15-20 years
I just got done watching a documentary on how audi quality has been continuously degrading each year since 2008, but I like the fact that she has misophonia. The Audi dealership should have definitely replaced that for free until they got it right. Audi needs to know about this crap!
Just might be my problem on my 2011A4. Thank you
If that serves as a consolation comment, I would NEVER suspect that the rotor was the culprit. I'd go for sway bar bushings, brake pads/callipers and then struts.
When you changed the rotor, did you also change the brake pads? (Inexperienced mechanic, just trynna retain information)
They dip the Inner Rotor in Liquid Nitrogen,..Then once it expands. It is welded to the otter..And being of two different types of material. They break if you hit a pot hole or curb....
Yes, I've had the same problem before. My wife complains about everything in the car.
