I have a B9 S5 that had a version of this issue. At about 60k miles I noticed a sound very like a failed lifter or a tappet badly out of adjustment, so called the dealership and took it in. They ultimately discovered a single rocker with what looked to be a missing needle, but absolutely nothing in the oil, no issues otherwise. Replaced all the rockers with the updated units, and a camshaft for good measure. I always take all the parts from these jobs home just to look them over and the bad rocker had all the movement of the one you show, and looked like it had a missing needle, so I took a grinder to it and pulled the center pin out. What I found was fascinating...all the needles were present, and the center pin had been worn on one half so much that it looked a bit line a small camshaft. The 'missing' needle was just rotated inside the roller. It reminds me of the issue with cam adjuster pin hardness on some 4.2s (like the one in my C5 allroad). My suspicion is that QC failed to notice inadequate hardening at multiple stages in the supply chain and this is the result. To their credit Audi let my service advisor decide what needed to be done, after he asked what I wanted replaced, and the car hasn't had a hiccup since. All under warranty, thankfully! I'm going to set all the parts of the rocker in resin as a paperweight.
@@daveross4091 Yeah, I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car. First gen teething problems and all, but I tend to keep my cars for a long time so it's an expense I can live with. However, this is a QC issue like the oil consumption issue and Audi should cover it in any case. If you want, I'll sent pics of the rocker I took apart. That they redesigned them tells us all we need to know. I was lucky that all the needles stayed in and the entire rocker didn't jump out, but like the cam adjuster pin hardening problems in the past, or poor quality chain ramps, or oil consumption, it's something they need to address up front. The PR would be great.

Congratulations for the skill. How much would it cost to replace the rollers? You don't have to disassemble the engine for this right? After how many km could these parts fail? Thanks, I ask because I would like to buy an RS5 year end 2017 or 2018.

Just out of curiosity.. Say the rocker pins did fall out. Is there enough valve clearance for them to fall into the cylinder? Just trying to figure out if it would be a catastrophic failure if they failed or if it could be caught in time. Thanks!
I have a 2018 RS4 B9 with these rocker arms (checked with a bore scope). Audi as we know, dont acknowledge that there is an issue with these earlier engines (33k mile). At this time, my engine seems fine and has no top end noises. If I am proactive, how much will it cost to replace the earlier arms with the later ones? I'd be interested to know the poportion of earler cars that are affected, if anyone knows?

Hey guys ive been watching ur channel for a long time and u guys help alot. Can you guys do a full in depth video on how to replace the rocker arms on the b9 s5??
What are the tell tale signs that an EA839 engine has an issue with the rocker arms? Do you recommend swapping them out as preventative maintenance after a certain number ofmiles? This reminds me of the B7 S4 chain tensioner issue all over again.
I love your work i think it's totally amazing, but i do hate how audi / vw just build in so many issues with these cars and just wash their hands when they go wrong, I mean just look at the size of the pins in the rocker arms they almost twice the size for the new ones
I was under the impression from previous videos that the main reason for the rocker arm failure was due to water ingress, is that not the real issue here? Would the rocker bearings not be fine if no water from dodgy intercooler? Great video series BTW, been refreshing your page every day since part 2, brilliant work!
Audi redesigned the rockers for a reason, the bigger question is why does this engine even have rockers instead of cam buckets?! rockers belong on pushrod engines... at least you can get to them easy on those kind of engines for when they need replacement or repair. Regardless this engine is doomed to require frequent engine out jobs every time you have to do a carbon clean due to the hot v design.
With it being part of the VAG group does my 2018 Vw golf Mk 7.5 Gti performance fall into having the problem with the defective rockers? Keep up your great content
I just purchased a 2022 RS5 and after watching the first video I was nervous and was going to trade it in until he said he rocker arms were upgraded from 2019 onward
The Porsche Cayenne uses the same 440 hp engine. 2020 year. I drive over 210K+ now and have no problem with it. It is possible that after a certain year this problem will be fixed.
Is the carbon buildup in the valves on these Audis related to ethanol in the petrol? Or is it just a symptom of direct injection? Is there anything the owner can do to prevent the buildup? Fuel additive? I know in the USA that E85 ethanol is available. There are petrol stations in my state that sell pure petrol with no alcohol added also. Would either of those make a difference?

thank you for tip, it seams i will keep my chrysler 300c , 5.7, it is stone age technology but it works, and it can hold full throttle as much as need, just oil change every 5-8000km , (any 5w-30, mostly the cheapest)
@@josiahkunstman8168 thank you on good wish, but it does not happen by super natural force than because bad maintenance, long term oil exchange and too much idling, if it has any tendency to fail it would be failed 100 000km ago and if it would happen by some miracle, it would be easy job to repair, no engine remove, just heads off and replace lifters and cam, 3-4 hours of work, 500 euros cost
That's truly horrific quality from Audi. This is made worse still by how difficult it is to do a relatively basic service task like a carbon clean. On top of that what the hell is the PCV system doing putting so much cr@p into the intake manifolds (in addition to coolant from the failed cooler)? I thought my B6 S4 was bad enough! Wow.
Pretty much a PCV's vent back into the intake manifold. Everything I have worked on outside of jet engines, had pcv's that vent back into the intake system to be burned.
Turbo motors are powerful but complex and have design drawbacks. The issue in many cases is that the boost pressure pushes combustion gases past the rings into the crankcase and oil. The PCV captures much of that and pumps it back into the intake system. Obviously that leads to fouled intake valves. Tuning makes the problem worse as boost is increased. In the case of AUDI, the rockers are an additional weak point.

Most shops apparently want to replace everything until they find out.
Mirko and Miroslav.....pozdrav...💪💪
Is that a crack in the timing gear casing at 9:54? Looks like it's been specifically noted in the video but not commented on.
Wow guys that so impressive and so mind opening to who can do the job and who wouldnt i like the videos and the straight forward thinking and knowledge well done to u and ur other machanic .....take care and stay cool from all this heat wave , im from Australia where we get the weather like this in our summers ...not knowing the Audi prob here in Australia but will think about owning any model ....Thank you
The owner didn't want it test driven?
After spending a small fortune, I'd want to know it was running ok.
We went for a drive eventually, car is out of the workshop for few weeks now no issues reported so far 😇 we respect everyone’s choice if the car can be or can’t be driven
Amazing, loving the price comparison from Audi to yourselves. Can't wait for my back car to break, it's coming your way!
So I just finished the video and I think you said if your car was made after July 2019 you’re good? So my car being a 2020 S4 I should be good right? The upgraded rocker arm should’ve been installed by the factory right? oh wait, I have to look to see when my car was manufactured, right?
All after 2019 July Should habe new rocker arms
@@VAGTechnic mine was manufactured 12-19 so I should good. Thanks for the info
Im looking at a 2019 rs5 that didnt come to the states until 11/19. From what i have read on the comments, i think it should be an update rocker arm model @VAGTechnic
Your work is extremely impressive. Just out of curiosity, how do you remember what goes where after you take engine out of the car and disconnect hundreds of wires and lines?
Do you have notebook, watch your own video or follow factory manual?
Thanks
do you think audi will achnowledge this and perhaps warranty or provide a free repair?
This seems like worth to raise a recall for
Helo great Mechanics,, Congratulations for your work and your chanel.
I have one question for you,
Is it save to buy the S5 from 2014 till 2016 B8.5 version and what issues will i find on that special machine?
Thank you

Hi guys great content, they are beautiful cars but Audi seem to fail on engineering basics yet again with these rocker arms. I will stick to my A4 diesel I think. 👍
17:26 i connected bleeding point on my car on expansion bottle, so it bleeds itself automatically
Would you tell me what you cleaned the valve/valve ports with?
Great job guys, will contact with you in next couple weeks to book a full servive of my Audi A6 50 tdi and gear box oil change.
seeing that carbon buildup makes me glad I got an s5 with the CREC engine, which has port and direct injection
NA CREC engines don't have port injection
@@overcooked123 good thing I’m in the uk then
CREC is the best S4 engine
Congratulations for the skill.
How much would it cost to replace the rollers? You don't have to disassemble the engine for this right?
After how many km could these parts fail?
Thanks, I ask because I would like to buy an RS5 year end 2017 or 2018.
You Have to prevention is 3950£
I love Audi.... Only when you repair it😂 congrats for all that amazing work you doing with this cars. Always a great experience for me to see your videos
The design of new cars and engines is just absurd and stupid. No wonder this kinda of repairs costs a lot of money to fix...And you guys did an awesome job with that Audi RS5 :)
Gud workmanship there guys ,excellent
Love your transparency! What a great insight problem solving. Glad it’s fixed
Awesome video and great to see you guys doing this work. I’m wondering, does anyone know if Audi fixed the issue with the rollers after a certain date? I’m looking at buying a 2021 macan with this engine and would be great to know if this is something I need to worry about. Cheers
All good
Just out of curiosity.. Say the rocker pins did fall out. Is there enough valve clearance for them to fall into the cylinder? Just trying to figure out if it would be a catastrophic failure if they failed or if it could be caught in time.
Thanks!
Thanks for the Update and all the tech. info regarding this RS5 ; Cheers from across the pond!
Currently we do 2-3 a month , vagtechnic.uk/products/audi-s4-s5-rs4-rs5-sq5-cwg-engine-rocker-arm-replacement-service
Great video Guys!!!…the owner didn’t let test drive it!!!…why!!! Wanted to see you go beast mode init 😂 he drove it off very cautious!! Maybe a bit reluctant to give it some!!!…BTW that R8 sounded SICK!!…I’ll defo be sticking with my B8 S5 😎😎👌🏾💯👍🏾
We are vehicle abusers 😂 we fully respect he’s decision , how ever we did drove it once he collect it . So all cool

I’d imagine he will be a lot more cautious now! Doesnt want another £9k repair bill does he
The Dodge V6 rollers had same issue
Nice jobs Top Techs!!!
Hey guys ive been watching ur channel for a long time and u guys help alot. Can you guys do a full in depth video on how to replace the rocker arms on the b9 s5??
Super been looking forward to seeing this
I see an opportunity for the aftermarket to save the day with a badass rocker upgrade
i've really enjoyed the videos on this RS5, Great Stuff!
What are the tell tale signs that an EA839 engine has an issue with the rocker arms? Do you recommend swapping them out as preventative maintenance after a certain number ofmiles? This reminds me of the B7 S4 chain tensioner issue all over again.
Great work guys. The customer actually said not to test drive it? Wow
We are vehicle abusers! 🤫
@@VAGTechnic haha I would have thought that the test drive afterwards is just part of making sure everything is fine.. 😉
20:35 I have a 2014 Rs5 reg rs51 jem, could you tell me if I could be affected with this issue. Thanks
Really enjoyed that series. Awesome work by you guys 👍
Did you figure out where it was leaking oil as mentioned in the previous video? Sorry if you said where and I missed it. Thx
Just a note, these roller bearing rockers have failed in Ford and GM engines as well. They do not have the water issues.
TIG weld those pressed on cam shaft lobes, just a tack would prevent further movement. Amazing work👍👍
Nah. Then you have to balance them.
With it being part of the VAG group does my 2018 Vw golf
Mk 7.5 Gti performance fall into having the problem with the defective rockers?
Keep up your great content
I just purchased a 2022 RS5 and after watching the first video I was nervous and was going to trade it in until he said he rocker arms were upgraded from 2019 onward
Great video as always!
Great information - stunning detail !
All the new cars look good but im happy with my C5 RS6😎
The Porsche Cayenne uses the same 440 hp engine. 2020 year. I drive over 210K+ now and have no problem with it. It is possible that after a certain year this problem will be fixed.
Thanks for the great videos , what sort of price is it to change rockers as a preventative measure? I am hoping it’s not an engine out job! 2018 RS4
It is 😅 Well we were discussing price around 3500£ with carbon cleaning
Are 2018 Rs4 models affected I think you mentioned 2019 onwards thanks
I think the 2019 onwards have the upgraded parts so ok
So my 2018 model could be a future problem?
@@billyhotspur6459 if you send me your reg or chassis I’ll find out
Is the carbon buildup in the valves on these Audis related to ethanol in the petrol? Or is it just a symptom of direct injection? Is there anything the owner can do to prevent the buildup? Fuel additive? I know in the USA that E85 ethanol is available. There are petrol stations in my state that sell pure petrol with no alcohol added also. Would either of those make a difference?
Nothing to do with petrol
I just bought an S4 Avant, 2017, 21500Miles, only bought it with a 3 year warranty extension, if this does need to be done someday, I hope it’s within guarantee. What should I look out for? Tell-tale signs? Brilliant content guys! Well done, Ps I’m in France, I think I’m one of 10 Petrol S4’s in france
thank you for tip, it seams i will keep my chrysler 300c , 5.7, it is stone age technology but it works, and it can hold full throttle as much as need, just oil change every 5-8000km , (any 5w-30, mostly the cheapest)
until your cam gets shredded and you have hemi tick
@@josiahkunstman8168 thank you on good wish, but it does not happen by super natural force than because bad maintenance, long term oil exchange and too much idling, if it has any tendency to fail it would be failed 100 000km ago and if it would happen by some miracle, it would be easy job to repair, no engine remove, just heads off and replace lifters and cam, 3-4 hours of work, 500 euros cost
Aboot time you post a new video 🤪🤪, you're still Awesome 👌
Outstanding job. Great video. Your customers should be extremely happy with the work and the price.
The rocker arms definitely look delicious with that orange chicken sauce from Panda Express.
I thought the additional port fuel injector would help the GDI carbon build up?! It still looks pretty bad!
I've been waiting this video for so long, and i loved every minute of it. Really good job, im waiting for more content. And sorry but i have to ask, the more i watch your videos the more im worried. I have a 2016 audi A4 tdi dsg, and sometimes when the engine is cold im getting some vibrations on D or R,but only when cold and stopped and after some seconds. Should i come there and take a look ? :p
Flywheel ?
@@VAGTechnic yeah probably

after installing the rocker arms did you have to set timing or something like that? also wha is the part no for th new rockers?
The owner must very disappointed with main Audi dealer, all servicing and oil changes done early and to correct timings and Audi dealer knows of issues and just quotes £24K and says take it or leave it....BTW great job guys.
Audi supposedly fixed this issue on the B9.5 platforms. Idk abt the 2020 models but defiantly 2021 and forward
