That was an ongoing conflict between Gilmour and Waters. Gilmour believed Syd was mentally ill and was sympathetic while Water believed Syd just fried his brain on acid and LSD and was like, "Well that's what you get for tripping all the time."

He clearly wasn't gone by then. You could see it in his eyes. The were still shining and there was still an awareness. This was MAY of 1967. The LSD overdose occurred later.
Actually, the incident you speak of (the weekend where he was given an overdose of LSD) had not yet occurred. That would be in the SUMMER of 1967. This was MAY. He was still very much alert, aware and coherent. The sparkle in his eyes were still clearly there. They weren't black holes, or as described, "the lights went out and nobody was home anymore".
Syd was very smooth with women and wasn't racist he even dated a black women who wasn't attractive he said he didn't care about her looks he liked her because she loved blues and played blues all the time and that was his attraction to her as most English women wasn't into blues as Syd's (2) favorite musicians 1. Bo diddley 2. Jimi Hendrix in fact Syd said he wanted to make a song with Hendrix even when he was on the same bus with him they waved but he didn't muster the courage to talk to Hendrix he said he regrets it and should of talked to him imagine if Syd and Hendrix made music together that would of been epic

syd barrett is such an angel. he just tries to talk and explain but nobody listens. i think we all try to understand him, but we never will and i've come to accept that
He probably had a broader mind than all of us. Never understand why people say hes got a narrow mind. He was clearly open to everything and everyone and was an absolute genius.
The host was getting so bent out of shape over their ideals of music theory and performance settings. lol. What they were talking about here is revolutionary for what was to come several decades to come. The guy couldn't wrap his brain around it.
Bill Hicks Lol yeah, you can see his face boiling with frustration even though he tries to hide it. They're smashing everything he knows to pieces, and their argument is "because we like it" XD
Oh my these guys were so young and yet so articulate and patient and polite with that awful interviewer Hans.Keller. Goodness me he was the devil. I hope he did not have children as they were sure to have been abused by him.
@@moirapettifr7127 What the hell are you on about? His view of music might not have coincided with theirs, and that's fair enough (in both directions) but at least they're engaging with each other; that's how "understanding" comes into existence. Your statements about Keller being "the devil" and the completely inappropriate suggestion about any children he may have had are ludicrous and offensive, frankly, and you come off like a nutter/ too-intense Pink Floyd fan who needs to calm the hell down. Additionally, writing off Keller in this way, given his contributions to musicology (look him up), is asinine.
Look how charming and charismatic Syd still was here. The interviewer was drawn to him, yet you can see Dick Clark literally shy away from Syd in November of 1967 when he saw how catatonic he was with dead eyes and a toneless and emotionless voice.
Well he really didn't want to do American Bandstand at all, he wasn't liking the direction of how the group was progressing. I think it's more to do with that, he was becoming very depressed
They tried to make it work with him. It was all very sad. On the way to their next concert, they simply just didn't pick him up. Simply is an understatement I'm sure, don't think they had the heart to say it to him. He was soo gone it probably didn't matter, may have been a relief as the last show he performed his back was to the crowd & he played one chord over & over.
It's interesting to hear Roger talking so early on about the fact that many audiences weren't there to listen to the music, a theme that obviously came to the forefront leading up to and contained in The Wall.
It is good to see and hear Syd ... I grew up hearing of the legend, the tragic fall, Pink Floyd will forever be a definition of music for me. My older brother attended allmost all of their concerts, he confirmed a visual experience was also powerful.
Thank you for posting it. I don’t think I’ve watched the whole thing for a long while. The two Rogers are both so soft spoken and it’s a nice chat. Love the final thought ending with a question!
I like that he challenged them and their music. It allows the artists to explain the philosophy behind the music and allow people to look at it in a different way.
Syd was a huge part of orig Floyd and instrumental in the best Floyd Albums ever. Can only really speculate what really happened. Never forget Syd Barret! RIP.
How wonderful to see Syd - whose name was Roger, too, so you had two Rogers there! - talk intelligently about his art/music (and Roger as well), fully aware of who he was as an artist and who his audience was. This is the foundation of any artist’s work and career, and necessary for conceptually-based work which these gentlemen have been well known for. Unfortunately, drugs and, as someone else mentioned, the Music Business and its pressures took their toll him (and his bandmate as well although it took longer to affect him). Who knows what might have been, but we can revel in Syd’s time and we have his amazing music to inspire us always. ❤️
Have you ever heard such an obsolete old bastard of an interviewer? Guy probably thought any music other than classical was a fad that'd last 6 months.
OMG, How amazing wouldn't that have been!! Rotten would've skinned him :-D Dude would've left in tears, hahaha! These two are so polite!! I've always heard that Syd had this temper and that he could blew up without warning. He didn't have control and were kinda not scary but unstable. Weird thing he didn't go off on this guy then!
Carmelita Olsen syd got that temper after he went insane, this was him back when he was normal, around 1970 he started to spiral out of control and pretty much went insane. He took way too much acid and would do LSD every day which really fucked with his mind, unfortunately after 75, syd was never the same and died alone. Pretty sad that such a genius was lost like that.
“I don’t like this loud music, I grew up with soft string music so I prefer that.” “We didn’t grow up with soft string music, we like loud music.” “Not every person who grew up without soft string music started a loud rock band so your answer is unconvincing.” This line of reasoning is as unnecessarily aggressive as it is just plain stupid. Waters is just responding via the interviewers tastes and the interviewer acts as though he’s OWED an explanation.
Syd looked very handsome in this interview. I love how looked his eyes and hair... and his voice was beautiful too, of course. In fact, he was looked handsome in that age. But that mental breakdown he had for the acid/LSD was a very sad thing
Younger people may not get who Hans Keller was. He was as crazy as Syd in a lot of ways. An oddball who could be very funny or irritating, but I think very intellectually honest in his oddball way. I don’t think he is being rude or arrogant here. He came from a completely different world than Floyd and he was genuinely interested in what he asked. Classical music can be loud and violent and wild too, but things like volume are on a different scale altogether and he is wondering why it is generally always blasting, or something like fffffff in his world. It is a good question as to why it’s so loud. It seems a weird question to ask us now because the volume of rock is built into our culture. But it wasn’t part of his culture and I’m sure he thinks they are losing a means of expression when they play loud all the time. This kind of expression is not really used in rock music, though it can be. Rock doesn’t require distinctions between mf and f because it is usually irrelevant to the expression of the music. Whoever put this together with Keller and Floyd knew that and a had a little fun, but, you know, why not?
Being confrontational should not be something to praise. It's counterproductive at best. In this case, he did not start the confrontation though, the interviewer did.
this is really how I'd like to remember Syd....

He was still very much alert, aware and coherent. The sparkle in his eyes were still clearly there. They weren't black holes, or as described, "the lights went out and nobody was home anymore".
Dan Maler Tgere was an lsd overdose? I didn't know that. is that what seriously made him deteriorate
Syd is the most beautiful man that I have ever seen. His music is genius. Early Pink Floyd was genius.
😻
Well, he didn’t really know him really well I guess he he didn’t know his fiancé kind of look like the model girlfriend to be how do you didn’t have to many close girlfriends about five and they will basically look the same as some very good looking very good looking model types do you very much and to look and I think he likes personality is Gus sweet down to earth guys but I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. He didn’t have that many girlfriends and what does it matter of us who his girlfriends work what does it matter what kind of girlfriends he held it what matters is his records and his artwork? Nobody cares about who he dated her how many girlfriends or whether it was racist people care about what he did with his ours and what he did with his records that’s all the people care about didn’t care about anything that you’re talking about I don’t
“After all .. why not?”
Iconic.
syd barrett is such an angel. he just tries to talk and explain but nobody listens. i think we all try to understand him, but we never will and i've come to accept that
Interesting comment!
Syd Barret is one of the most fascinating artists to ever live
With such a narrow mind you'd have thought he'd have a smaller forehead
He probably had a broader mind than all of us. Never understand why people say hes got a narrow mind. He was clearly open to everything and everyone and was an absolute genius.
@@thinginground5179 He's talking about the interviewer.
@@richankdubey1498 lol sorry
@@richankdubey1498 Oh no he knows that. He's a big fan, greatest damn interviewer ever
R.I.P. Syd Barrett
0:18 can't stop laughing, Waters and Barrett's exchange of looks is like "what the fuck is this fool on though"
Bill Hicks holy shit it's Bill Hicks, I thought you were dead...
What is incredible is the fact that there has never been anyone like or even close to Syd.
Syd seems so articulate and extremely good looking. He could have been the consumate frontman for years to come.
Look how charming and charismatic Syd still was here. The interviewer was drawn to him, yet you can see Dick Clark literally shy away from Syd in November of 1967 when he saw how catatonic he was with dead eyes and a toneless and emotionless voice.
If someone asked me about Cheeseburgers, I would have that look too.
Well he really didn't want to do American Bandstand at all, he wasn't liking the direction of how the group was progressing. I think it's more to do with that, he was becoming very depressed
@@Valientlink lsd can do that (not the only factor but a big one)
By the way, which ones pink?
Pink Anderson
Syd. He was the one who came up with their name. When he was kicked out it was Roger.
Nazimova B he got out of the band
Come on in here, dear boy and have a cigar 🎶🎶🎵
They tried to make it work with him. It was all very sad. On the way to their next concert, they simply just didn't pick him up. Simply is an understatement I'm sure, don't think they had the heart to say it to him. He was soo gone it probably didn't matter, may have been a relief as the last show he performed his back was to the crowd & he played one chord over & over.
Pretty charming syd! Those eyes❤
It's great seeing and hearing Syd in his best form, he was a bright and introspective man.
It's interesting to hear Roger talking so early on about the fact that many audiences weren't there to listen to the music, a theme that obviously came to the forefront leading up to and contained in The Wall.
Syd really had his shit together here. So articulate and such a dreamboat too 💕💕💕💕
Loook at Syd, hes such a gem ♡
Syd was one handsome man back in those days sheesh 🌈🎸
It is good to see and hear Syd ... I grew up hearing of the legend, the tragic fall, Pink Floyd will forever be a definition of music for me. My older brother attended allmost all of their concerts, he confirmed a visual experience was also powerful.
I think that I find Syd Barrett the most beautiful man that I have ever seen.
Same. His eyes and hair are like art nouveau, striking you into a new world formed by only imagination.
I love how both Rogers look down in contempt for the critic vainly criticising them for their musical style
Que lastima que no haya mas videos cuando estaba syd barrett la verdad que era un hombre muy pero hermoso en su juventud. No mas palabras
Wonderful footage. So young and polite.
You can see why the rest of the band loved Syd... and why they wrote "Wish You Were Here".
Why does the interviewer look like that one teacher character in the wall
I love how the ‘why does it have to be so terribly loud?’ question shocks Waters into freezing on his stool.
Dios mio, como amo Syd Barrett!!!
👊🧠
Beloved Syd, you´re a star! ;) You´re a legend!
I always had a crush on Syd and David
Thank you for posting it. I don’t think I’ve watched the whole thing for a long while. The two Rogers are both so soft spoken and it’s a nice chat. Love the final thought ending with a question!
I like that he challenged them and their music. It allows the artists to explain the philosophy behind the music and allow people to look at it in a different way.
Syd was a huge part of orig Floyd and instrumental in the best Floyd Albums ever. Can only really speculate what really happened. Never forget Syd Barret! RIP.
He was instrumental in the best Pink Floyd albums despite not being in the band anymore?
0:52 The quick cut to Waters is hilarious.
"A little bit of a regression to childhood, but then why not?" Perfect closing statement!
Nobody has mentioned how much Syd and Roger are testily eyeing each other.
My god Syd was so beautiful
Syd Barrett was so beautiful.
I'd love to see this Borat dude interview Johnny Rotten
Have you ever heard such an obsolete old bastard of an interviewer? Guy probably thought any music other than classical was a fad that'd last 6 months.
OMG, How amazing wouldn't that have been!!
Rotten would've skinned him :-D
Dude would've left in tears, hahaha!
Hitch Slap he would get ripped lol
kurtacion onfroy fuck me he would have been about 300 years old then when he died ?
Syd Barrett was gorgeous
Roger was more gorgeous
@@David-vg8lx😅😅
I love u syd
syd seemed like such an interesting person, wish i had a buddy like him without all the misunderstandings tho
Roger is so funny!! “We DIDNT grow up with a string quartet”😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
I accept, that you like it ... WHAT a tolerant interviewer!
Days when interviewing musicians was all about how long their hair was and how loud they played their music.
Floyds without Syd were just repeating them selfs again and again.
Fresh wind of Syd is an inspiration everytime I hear it.
I wish we had more interaction with Syd in long form interviews
“I don’t like this loud music, I grew up with soft string music so I prefer that.”
“We didn’t grow up with soft string music, we like loud music.”
“Not every person who grew up without soft string music started a loud rock band so your answer is unconvincing.”
This line of reasoning is as unnecessarily aggressive as it is just plain stupid. Waters is just responding via the interviewers tastes and the interviewer acts as though he’s OWED an explanation.
Thank you for the upload! What a strange Austrian, apparently not getting it.
Best moment: Syd's smirk at Keller's word creations 1:29
Stuff like this is why UA-cam is brilliant
Syd looked very handsome in this interview. I love how looked his eyes and hair... and his voice was beautiful too, of course. In fact, he was looked handsome in that age. But that mental breakdown he had for the acid/LSD was a very sad thing
To think that loud volume was once considered controversial. For better or worse, we were so delicate.
The delicateness had grown so old to the point where anything minorly brash at the time was considered mere satanism.
Oh yeah! When Syd was in the band and pre-ego Roger knew his place.
Seems like a grade A a-hole in this interview.
The Beach Boys
Inside joke at 1:29 Syd gestures Roger by rubbing his nose and Roger reciprocates
nah, they both just had itchy noses
That guy interviewer didn’t realise how pink floyd was gonna change music forever.
The interviewer should be tightly attached "clockwork orange style" in front of a Rammstein concert !
I love that Roger was a confrontational dude even back then. Never change!
Being confrontational should not be something to praise. It's counterproductive at best.
In this case, he did not start the confrontation though, the interviewer did.
Syd Reminds Me a bit of Marc Bolan, Such a Soft, but articulate Voice, and Pretty Boy Looks . An Interesting but Tragic Character....
