- Louis XIV used court etiquette, reinforced by is daily schedule, as a political instrument to glorify is figure and dominate the French nobility.
The duke de Saint Simon, one of his courtiers at Versailles, once wrote:
“With an almanac and a watch, one could, from 300 leagues away, say with accuracy what he was doing”.
So, on todays video, we are going to be looking at this strict routine and try to understand what it was and why did the king followed it with a military precision.

I always loved queen Marie Terese, she deserves more recognition.
Cool! Daily routines in history are so interesting, & this is a nice simple run-down of Louis' for people like me who know very little. I've watched a few vids about him & French royalty recently, & I'm getting a vague idea of how moving the courtiers to Versailles benefited him, so it's nice to hear about the etiquette he distracted them with. I liked how some rooms were named after Roman gods, & having heard of Monsieur, his dislike of outdoor pursuits made me giggle :D
Court life must have been tiring, always competing for the King's attention. To paraphrase Louis XIV, for every governmental position where he hired someone, afterward there were 99 angry competitors and one who was ungrateful. Another of his sayings was that he "almost had to wait" as he walked out and his coach just pulled up in time to take him somewhere. Imagine the indignity, whey you "almost have to wait".
I love how Louis was such a clever old fox wen it came to controlling the nobility. He had a great taste in art and his mistresses
Wat about feeding his people u numbnuts

@@2604ernesto he had a long term relationship with the chevalier de Lorraine, but others would come and go.
@@boboneill6554 the chevalier de Lorraine even brought young guys to Phillipe! It's such a interesting story I love it
@@2604ernesto I don’t know that the chevalier pimped. I am sure that there were plenty who would throw themselves at him as he was the king’s brother.
The toilet in Versailles was a hole in the floor.
Just disgusting but he let his people starve
Yes.😢 If the man had been smarter and took care of his people instead of pacifying the nobility, one must wonder if the French Revolution would've happened, and how French history would've changed. 😢Would France now have a constitutional monarchy?🤔Who knows?🤔
