Thank you, Francie, for taking us along on the ride. My son had a 2020 Model Y which he used to go on long road trips. He's a Marine veteran, so... of course... he slept in his car. I would never do that. Having watched the EV emergence, I have to say, Tesla has it over all the others, hands-down, because of the super charging network. They just work. Period. I have never seen anyone use the non-Tesla charging infrastructure where they have not had numerous problems. The only problem my son had on his very long trip up to Minnesota was that there wasn't a charger positioned where he could go see the headwaters of the Mississippi, and make it back. That was in late 2020 or early 2021. And, since then, a charger has been constructed. So... if he still had the car, he could make the trip. About the heat... Yeah, I live a few miles south of you, in northern Mississippi. When my son would let me drive his Y, I could feel the heat coming through the glass and really warming up my old, bald head. So, I purchased him one of those reflective sunscreens by Vion. (Not sponsored.) And, it made a huge difference. I think, when Tesla comes out with a minivan (which is what I'm holding out for) if it has the basic glass roof, I'll be covering it up, because I can't stand being hot. Traveling hot. Ventilated seats, a great a/c, and the ability to block out the Southern sun... that's what I'm looking for in a vehicle. I did like the 'keep' feature on the Model Y. So, I could run into the stores, and know that when I got back, the vehicle would be the same temperature as when I left. That's really nice. I can't do that with my ginormous gas guzzler. One Day. CyberVan. But... maybe not quite so extremely styled. We'll see. At any rate, thank you, Francie, again, for taking us along on the trip. I will not be acquiring a VinFast, nor any other non-Tesla. The model 3 sits too low for me, and I can't get in or out without great difficulty. (Joys of age.) Our little puppy is 13 now, and he doesn't travel well anymore. So... no road trips for us with him in tow. But, it looks like Rafiki did well. I'm glad of that. Keep the videos, and podcasts, and all that good stuff coming! Be safe. Stay hydrated! It's hot out there.
I was watching on my iPhone at home, I had to stop watching where you went to Sonic. I jumped in my model 3, ran to sonic, grabbed some food 😂 then finished the whole video in my Tesla screen at sonic parking lot 😂.
Francie completes the team. She can and is capable of nerding even more, but keeps it at a sufficient level for a well rounded point of view, which speaks to the general population. Two thumbs up to Francie whose name is constantly messed up by auto correct :)
great realistic trips Francie thanks. Enjoy the more relaxed vids vs the race to wherever trips........more accurate to every day trips. Glad you and Rafiki made it home safe and sound.......dont worry to much about the adapter whoops; we all make mistakes :)
Autopilot has been completed ignored by Tesla since v11 fsd dev started. You can imagine they plan to EVENTUALLY move the current fsd stack into a limited mode for autopilot users but for now all the phantom breaking issues will only get worse as they issue small updates to address edge case safety recalls that only make it worse.
33:15 I drop stuff off at the UPS store just across the street from this supercharger station and I only noticed it there like 2 weeks ago. It’s located in a safe part of Tulsa.
For a while it had a cooling system restriction so charging fail safes to a lower power curve than is typical for this age and mileage of Model 3. Also, I suspect he’s hammered the battery hard enough that it also has a decent amount of degradation. Plus performance model 3 packs tend to degrade more than long range AWD/RWD packs. But the SC network keeps getting more extensive so you’re compensating for that deficit with that asset.
To check to see if your Tesla is CCS enabled click on car icon, software, click on in blue autopilot and additional information and third line from top will let you know if your Tesla is CCS enabled. I think Kyle could get that updated. Safe travels. Hope you enjoyed Texas. Did you check out Buc-ees?
yeah, this Model 3 neither supports NACS nor CCS. I think many people don't even know that you also need the CCS retrofit to charge at NACS chargers. The plug fits, but it won't be able to charge.
You need to have Kyle do the "Bundle of wires" ccs mod. If you have the CCS adaptor, "bundle" and the newer charge port ECU, you can make your car able to use CCS and NACS on 3rd party chargers. I did this on my 2020 M3, and it does come in handy.
In Europe we have CCS stations and some (slow) v2 chargers that has the Tesla cable. V3 is CCS common charging standard. IONITY is the biggest network outside of Tesla. Some cars are locked out of Tesla network, for instance Kia with 800V system.
That car had a BMS cooling issue last year when K&A did a trip to FL to get Walter. It prevented the car from holding max charging speeds in the summer heat. I wonder if that's been fixed.
I try to avoid Little Rock's v2 Supercharger, which seems to take longer to drive through the outlet mall and traffic lights and can charge slowly when busy. Have been able to avoid since they opened v3 Supercharger iopened in Brinkley, AR. The chademo adapter at Franklin's should work on an older Tesla without CCS retrofit.
I rarely see anyone else monitoring tire pressure. I didnt really before driving a tesla but given the car is super heavy, and super fast you will have tire wear but mainly, if you get a nail and you see the loss in pressure and hopefully get it fixed or replaced. Why be extra aware of tire status? Got a jack and a spare? probably not. Stay on top of your tires. it has a good display for it.
Here is an idea. Go take a few trips where you use A Better Route Planner to choose the chargers. It can be set for more short charge stops, to few long deep charge stops in 5 increments. You can even schedule CCS chargers in the mix if you have the CCS adapter. ABRP will transfer the route to your car if you set it up. I just use voice commands to set the next charger and destination.
That might work in some cars, but Tesla won’t accept a route plan with non Tesla chargers in North America. In Europe certain higher quality charging networks or stations are included in the route planning after some vetting process by Tesla.
for any 2019 tesla, you need a "CCS-Adaptor Retrofit" ... no third-party charger will work without it. They way to get it is to buy the CCS-Adaptor for the car, and Tesla will notice it needs the retrofit. Mobile service or a visit to a service centre will be needed.
Great trip. I definitely would have been sweating bullets there at 0% - you seemed so calm! As an FYI, if you go to the menu list, tap on Software, below the car name/mileage/vin you'll see a link for Additional Vehicle Information. One of the items will be CCS and 3rd Party Nacs and will show Enabled if you can. Some older Teslas won't have that unless they had an charge port hardware upgrade/add-on that is available.
Not sure why I enjoy watching other peoples road trip? but I do. Side note, the model 3 will be louder with the back seat down - even just one of the splits.
Based on the last video, my Lightning does better with Pets than your VINFast. I’ve never had to leave my Lightning (or KIA Niro EV) unlocked at a charging station because the climate wouldn’t stay on.
When u play music all I hear is….” Eye yey yey was born into a curse an now my second birth my momma dance around the fire an pulled me from her skirt I’m th black sheep of th family 🔥
Thanks Francie and Rafiki. Your videos are so enjoyable. Although your CCS charging adventure was a little too exciting. The lawyer sounds really interesting. I’ll try to find it. Sounds like charging companies like to sign contracts with or find the loopholes in them to cut costs at the expense of the end users, the little people 😳 Quesrion: any cost differences between your VinFast and the Model 3 drives! Thanks! ❤❤❤
Kids and I just did a San Antonio to Chattanooga trip in our Y. Road tripping in these EVs are so easy. The battery lasts longer than the bladders of toddlers. So many frequent short stops are such a breeze for us. Our only "issue" was at your Memphis supercharger. I backed into a stall that wasn't working. Car told me so but I didn't look. 🤦
Early Model 3s (2017-2019?) do not have CCS compatibility from the factory. I’m surprised Kyle hasn’t purchased the CCS retrofit yet since third party NACS doesn’t work without it either. Maybe something to have done before heading back to Colorado (remote service can do the retrofit).
One more comment: You should road trip with Lacey. I’d like to see an episode where ‘non-geeks’ experience BEV travel. Go somewhere fun with a great spa (and put the cost on Kyle’s card 😮). Girls trip! 😂😊
Next road-trip u an Rafriki ( or refresh to be 👍 go pick up Jordan then Lacey then road trip to nearest access to ALL 4 or 5 Tesla MEGA FACTORIES ( no shirts allowed YEHEHE ) 👑
If you see a series of smoke stacks with nothing coming out, chances are that it's a natural gas peaker power plant that's powered off. Refineries run all the time to be economical.
I noticed that the pet hammock you have doesn't seem to have a mesh opening like the Tesla one. I don't know if other Tesla "compatible" ones do, but it's actually *VERY* important. It serves two purposes (I have a 2022 MYP): One in that it allows the cold air from the centre console vents back to cool your pet, and when you look into the car, through some voodoo magic, the mesh is transparent when you use the internal camera (If your Tesla has it) to check on your puppers with the Dog Mode surveillance. We thought at first that the dog had broken/chewed/destroyed the mesh. No. It was just transparent.
Perfect example of why plug-and-charge and EV routing software is so important. This is why it’s shocking to me how many current-day EV’s from legacy automakers don’t support the next generation of CarPlay or, at the very least, supply regular CarPlay with state-of-charge information like the Mustang Mach-E. Every EV road trip deserves to be this seamless and there’s a clear software path forward by adopting smartphone manufacturers’ latest in-vehicle software versions.
I just took a long trip in a 100K mile M3, in the summer heat wave. When I used a V3 Supercharger, we'd get that high rate at first, but by 40% the loud fan would come on, with a matching loud fan on the Supercharger, and the rate would plummet to 50KW. I think yours is doing the same, as it shouldn't take half an hour. We found that the 150kw V2 stations actually charged faster, starting at 145kw, holding that to 60% or so, then came down to 100kw until 80%. That's faster.
@@scottbreseke716- that’s what the comment was about - the radiator fan on the front of the car being loud when charging. I agree with your comment about blowing the moisture out of the evaporator core using the (interior) blower fan, though.
We need a Francie road trip for all EV vehicles Out of Spec has. Don't get me wrong I love the regular videos, but Francie is more of an everyday consumer that people like my wife would want to hear from.
4:24 Vinfast map app also have this function. It shows where you must be charged with battery percent. If you drive faster, percent will be lower in realtime. or every 5 mins 6:51 haha laggy 10:01 Keep in lane is working, but model 3 move left then right. It doesn't track keep in center lane Finally, Tesla model 3 is noisy, bumpy and feeling unsolid but Tesla chager stations quantity is better than CCS.
The Earth's circumference is approximately 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers) around the equator. This is the distance you would travel if you circumnavigated the planet along the equator.
Unfortunately Tesla does not have manual battery precondioning, but if you had the S3XY buttons, you could use the control app to start precondioning for your none Tesla charger such as Franklin's
Francie, the vw I.d 4 has plug and charge on ea now. Ford has plug and charge, rivian has plug and charge. Also lots of cars can use auto charge plus on EVgo witch is their version of plug and charge the bolt ev can use autocharge plus on ev go even the bz4x that out of spec bashes all the time can use autocharge plus on ev go and pilot flying j is going strong building out a cross country network. Walter from the network architect channel has been showing the rollout on his channel and our friend Steve from plug and play ev UA-cam channel have a bi weekly podcast on Wednesday talking about the charging improvements not just the negativity that people want to push on their roadtrips about ccs. When drew lost race to Vegas 1 because of Tesla super chargers. He has a new model 3 and was beaten by an ionic 5 and Kyle in a Porsche taycan.
Also I forgot to mention you don’t need to swipe the ea app to start a charge. I see you say that and Kyle but no you don’t . Show people an easier way to. If you are a member of ea I have my ea pass in apple wallet . All I need to do is grab my chademo handle with one arm plug In to my car and then bring up my ea card in apple wallet by clicking the side of my phone or tapping the wallet I tap my phone on the members spot on ea unit you will hear a ding and it starts charging no swiping 😅 hard to charge on ea when it isn’t . ChargePoint even lets you keep your card in apple wallet so just plug in and tap tap the rfid spot on the charger boom it starts no big deal. If ea only made chargers for the I’d 4 it wouldn’t need a screen either but they are open to everyone. And as you know v4 superchargers have a screen.
Problem isn’t the plug and charge. It’s the not working . To beat the Tesla they need luck . They let the most inexperienced EV driver drive it. Then Kyle usually bribe or talk people into leaving him the only working fast EA charger that works and pull out every trick in the book, while the Tesla driver just ride along chilling and wins nine out of ten times. Mostly the CCS fucks up the plans.
I liken road tripping my 2018 Model 3 to the trips I used to do back in the day on motorcycles. It’s a loud, a little uncomfortable, really pretty stiff riding, and encourages me to drive too quickly and go too fast around corners. And all that stopping to charge when your foot is in it reminds me of the frequent stops for gas with those small tanks on motorcycles.
Next time you are In the UK, you should do Lands end to John o Groats and back. Pick an EV you can't get in the US and test it out. And no need to worry about stealing adapters .😉
Next time anyone from Out of Spec comes through Memphis how can we fine out and I can let our Tesla Owners Club and EV Clubs know for an impromptu meet up at a charger. I have friends in both. We just got a new EA charger plus 3 SCs in our area two in TN and one in NW MS.
Right, but the you just got through talking about learning from your mistakes and not repeating them so it IS worth noting that the 2022 Model 3 and even the Highland Model 4 are leaps ahead of the earlier Model 3's when it comes to cabin noise. In addition to that Kyle has put aftermarket rims on that car with no aero covers so that's going to make it ride a little loud and less efficient. So in the newer model year Model 3's it does seem Tesla has done what you suggested and learned from those mistakes of the past to produce a better product. Yes, we can agree it's not a perfect product but it is much more improved and refined than previous models. And this isn't to say Tesla is the best of any EV. They have a ways to go in various areas but still continue to do some of the most basic things that make driving an EV worth it and taking a road trip easier. Something most other OEMs still struggle with.
I’m jealous of the route planning and easier charging, but man. 45 minute charges? I can’t give up my Ioniq 5. 20 minutes max, usually less, and I’m out. I can’t wait for the IONNA network to ramp up.
More francie road trips!

+1 to that electric scooter idea in the trunk. I've thought about that too while charging. I own a 2019 Nissan Leaf SV Plus.
It was sharing power with the charger next to it, that’s why it’s slower at low SOC.
for any 2019 tesla, you need a "CCS-Adaptor Retrofit" ... no third-party charger will work without it.
They way to get it is to buy the CCS-Adaptor for the car, and Tesla will notice it needs the retrofit. Mobile service or a visit to a service centre will be needed.

We found that the 150kw V2 stations actually charged faster, starting at 145kw, holding that to 60% or so, then came down to 100kw until 80%. That's faster.
The loud fan clears the moisture out of the air conditioning system so that mold doesn't build up.
@@scottbreseke716- radiator fan? I don’t think so.
@@dennislyon5412 You're the only one to use the word "radiator".
@@scottbreseke716- that’s what the comment was about - the radiator fan on the front of the car being loud when charging. I agree with your comment about blowing the moisture out of the evaporator core using the (interior) blower fan, though.
@@dennislyon5412 I said "loud fan", not "radiator fan".
We need a Francie road trip for all EV vehicles Out of Spec has. Don't get me wrong I love the regular videos, but Francie is more of an everyday consumer that people like my wife would want to hear from.
That Bass Pronis frequently ICEd
4:24 Vinfast map app also have this function. It shows where you must be charged with battery percent. If you drive faster, percent will be lower in realtime. or every 5 mins
6:51 haha laggy
10:01 Keep in lane is working, but model 3 move left then right. It doesn't track keep in center lane
Finally, Tesla model 3 is noisy, bumpy and feeling unsolid but Tesla chager stations quantity is better than CCS.
The Earth's circumference is approximately 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers) around the equator. This is the distance you would travel if you circumnavigated the planet along the equator.
Great to get your honest opinion comparing the Tesla to the Vinfast.
Lol. She might be the first person to compare Tesla to a Vinfast
Vinfast suck she know it 😀
My 2019 M3P doesn't have the CCS retrofit, but I'd be surprised if Kyle's didn't (given what you guys do and what the car is used for).
francie road trips. I watch
Well, you wanted some adventure at Franklins and you got it. Lol
Unfortunately Tesla does not have manual battery precondioning, but if you had the S3XY buttons, you could use the control app to start precondioning for your none Tesla charger such as Franklin's
SC was just a few miles away, so could have chosen that as a charging destination (for battery preconditioning), but not actually gone there.
Just after 6:18 your satnav beeped with direction information. How do you do that? Thanks.
We need Francie to do a M3 refresh road trip to compare her thoughts.
Yes, yes, yes, route planning needs to be easy. I still have to do some, but then I like to drive in very low EV infrastructure areas.
Rafriki had ta lay in Th sun to thaw out prolly sure wish Jordan coulda joined y’all !!! 👍👍👍
Francie needs to repeat the model 3 national park route kyle and Alyssa did!!!
The "refinery" that you saw in OK, I suspect is a power plant.
Def not a refinery.
Miss the Drone shots!
They’re in love with each other
Didnt Kyle say on the last "fleet update" video this Model 3 is too old to support CCS charging?
veru nice video
Sonic fries are ok, but Del Taco are the best. Unfortunately there are no Del Tacos east of Moore, OK.
Got some in SE Michigan!
How was that transition from Kansas I-35 to Oklahoma I-35?😂
Next time anyone from Out of Spec comes through Memphis how can we fine out and I can let our Tesla Owners Club and EV Clubs know for an impromptu meet up at a charger. I have friends in both. We just got a new EA charger plus 3 SCs in our area two in TN and one in NW MS.
Pony up for that ccs retrofit Kyle 😛
Kansas is pancake flat 😮
@ 5 2 : 3 3 I’ll need to fully check out ur statement
Fun fact, Earth's circumference is only 24902 miles so Kyle's model 3 has done the equivalent of around the world 6 times.
