Hilton (including their sub-brands) just announced a Tesla partnership. They will be adding thousands of L2 chargers to their North American locations, including in Canada and Mexico. That should make it pretty easy to pick a location and know they will have charging available.
I purchased a $45k Hyundai Santa Fe in 2017 (sold for $11k in '21) within 6 months i lost XM (now a blank button) then Android Auto came out (incompatibile with my head unit) then in '18 the adaptive cruise control came with proximity sensors 😢.... you are rocking a nearly 5 year old car and it still looks, feels, and drives like new...NEW!
I recently did a trip from Raleigh to Charleston in my 2022 M3P. My spouse didn’t want to stop to charge but the dealership was 283 miles away. I made it with 16 miles of charge left and used only 66 KWh. I have 11% degradation from all of the Drag racing I have done with it but I can still get 300 miles on a charge with it. Crazy that I am averaging 264 Wh/mi over 21k miles with a car that has run 11.17 @ 120.0 mph in the 1/4 mile.
On the note of hotel chargers...I wish the major hotel chains would realize that installing chargers at hotels would do a much better job of attracting EV drivers if one could actually plan a trip that depends on being able to get a full charge overnight. This is especially true when the hotel is located away from the interstate highway, deep in the middle of a charging desert, where the hotel charger might be the only charger around for a long way, and the nearest DC fast charger, over 100 miles away. Once you have to arrive at the hotel with extra energy just in case the hotel charger is down/occupied, the value of the hotel charger to the driver diminishes greatly.
I just wish Tesla would move to 800v charging. We've been road tripping our EV6 over the summer. We travelled to the beach a couple times, about 650 miles each way. It was the same trip each time so we learned the best and most reliable chargers. I used all 350kw EA chargers and our average stops were 12 minutes to continue our trip. There is a huge difference between 12 and 30 minutes when you have 3-4 stops. Using higher voltage and lower amperage makes sense to me. It seems the higher the voltage and the lower the amps, the less heat is generated in the battery. The public charging scene just sucks, we were lucky that our particular route was perfect. With Tesla having such a good charging network, if you got your cars down to 15 minute charging sessions, that would be insane.
Alyssa so glad you are back. Started following you 4 plus years ago, traveling across the USA with the dogs and was so happy when you and Kyle moved to Fort Collins as I am your neighbor and hope some day to meet you guys.
27:45 - The worst part about the Flagler EA location is when you roll into it at 11:15pm on a road trip, only to find that the gas station across the street closed at 11pm, and you have to go down the highway to the next truck stop to use the bathroom. And evidently there are now solar canopies at this location, but not upgraded dispensers.

Did a road trip in my SR+ earlier this year, Cincinnati to Ft Myers. 1087 miles. No charger failed and trip was well. Favorite charger on the way was actually a weird one. The London, KY superchargers are the best setup for both cars and towing EVs with nearly all pull through charging.
My wife is always surprised at how quick we leave charging stations. The car is always ready before we are and the range is so good that we usually have to stop at least 1 time before the car does. I have a 2022 Model 3 LR with 18 inch wheels...currently states 332 miles at 100% and I have 26,842 miles on it.
My wife and I bought our first EV, 2022 MYLR, in large part because I started watching Kyle and Alyssa road trip videos prior to the Colorado move. Thanks guys! Miss the Ellie and Bleu cameos.
I can't wait for my third EV. 8 years and 200k+ miles into EV ownership and it's been amazing to see the progress and constant change since 2015. Both EVs bought for under $18k each used.
I wish Stellantis would come out and announce their new EV RAM 1500 will have NACs. That will seal the deal for me and I’d buy one the day they release it
In regards to superchargers near the highway. I’ve seen some really awesome placement on the Ohio turnpike. They have super chargers inside the rest stops. I have done a few trips on it and it makes it feel like your not even driving an ev with how quick the stops are.
I live in Europe, and if I hadn't just gotten a Model Y in June, I would've definitely ordered the Model 3 Highland during the weeks just before the unveiling, when it was listet at _the old price,_ while the October delivery date revealed it would actually be _the new model._ NA Model 3 buyers should also try getting the new model for the old price, by waiting for a similar delivery date gap preceding an official launch. Waiting for Juniper is only for those who really don't need a new car right now, because that refresh could be years in the future for all we know.
29:00 Looking at PlugShare comments for the Flagler CO station in April 2024, the EA units seem to be working now and the I-70 diner is open again. High times for CCS road-tripping!!!
For v2 vs v3, I use the labels. If you see something other than A or B, that group is v3. I'm sure I would eventually get a feel for the thickness of the cables. In July, a group of us took a trip in their new MYLR. We only had to wait for the car once in 4 days, and then only because we wanted to avoid charging in our destination city. I consider a reduced rate better than nothing.
I've been watching Tesla install a new 12-stall location across from my office building. On Monday workers dug a trench at the Circle-K on Thomassville Rd/I-10 in Tallahassee FL. Tuesday and Wednesday they ran pipes/conduits. Thursday a flatbed truck and a crane showed up. The crane lowered a pair of 6-stall blocks onto the trench. Today they hooked everything up including the transformer. I suspect there's not much left to do aside from city inspection. Tesla has this down to a science.
NACS as a port does have advantages over CCS-1 regardless of network. I have had multiple times when I had my Bolt that an EA station or Chargepoint, or even EVgo had a damaged lock trigger and would not stay locked on to charge.
I find it interesting that Kyle has the AC set at 68-72 F and Alissa is sitting with a blanket and pillow on her legs. Perhaps Kyle, you could try 76F and add a bit more range. I quite often see Kyle in the summertime wearing a hoodie.
I drove from Orlando to Colorado Springs a few months ago - taking the southern route (Florida Panhandle, Mobile, Louisiana, Dallas, Amarillo, Clayton, then up I-25. Easy trip as long as you aren't in a super rush. I really like the supercharger in Limon - the only issue is the higher speed chargers aren't well labeled - you just have to know based on the thickness of the cables which chargers are which.
To be fair there is a difference between the NACS port and the CSS1 port. The CCS1 connector is just so heavy and awkward. It is so hard to get it to connect fully. So many times I have thought it seated correctly but it didn’t. With NACS it is just so easy. The connector always slides in perfectly and seats fully every single time. Some connection issues will be solved simply by switching to NACS.
Kyle, have you ever removed the AC condenser for cleaning? Your M3P is a few years old, done a good amount of miles and would probably benefit from having all the crud, leaves and bugs that gets trapped between the condenser and radiator. You can expect far better AC performance and cooling as well as fans not having to spin up so much. 👍🏻
The Full Service Rest Stops were more common when I was a kid and road tripping every summer on family vacations. They seemed to die out in the later 80s & 90s. Which is a shame, because they're so much more convenient than getting off the highway, finding a gas/charge station, and then finding food somewhere. I think the Full Service Rest Stops will make a huge comeback when EV's become more popular over the next 5-10 years. Also, on a side note, the Phantom Braking has become SO bad lately. It's always been bad, but has really amped up the frequency in my '19 M3P. I recently moved to Southern Central CO (Alamosa/Ft Garland area), and Highway 160 between Alamosa and Ft G is quite possibly THE worst road I've driven on for phantom braking. I had to do the drive yesterday, and I had at least a dozen instances of phantom braking over a 30 mile trip. It was insane.
Started watching the Model 3 road trips on this channel back in 2020 just to better understand what I should expect while waiting for delivery of my own Model 3.
I did a 6000 mile road trip and had 1 problem, it happened when I decided to take a short cut going to Capitan New Mexico, the problem was no superchargers in remote areas, but if I would of stayed on original Navigation there would not have been a problem.. I was able to use level 2 charger in Ruidoso but I had to stay an unplanned overnight stay..
We recently did CO to FL road-trip in 2022 Model 3 Performance too and here are some takeaways: - Wrapping handle with wet cloth works in 100F+ for sure - After charging for about 15 miles you get very high consumption, if that’s battery cooling it should be done with charger plugged in as much as possible to extend range - CO roads are the worst among all the states we been through - W/o Dog mode we wouldn’t have been able to take this road trip in any car - Trip planner became quite unstable in predicting battery percentage in last few months, we had legs where it was 20% off - Tesla needs IR-blocking light tint from factory on all glass, it’s silly that we have to run AC to fight what can be reflected - Autopilot needs manual override of speed limit, we had many miles in manual mode just because it guessed the speed limit wrong and there is not much we could do - Trip planner constantly routes us on slow 150kW chargers and vey high SOC instead of going lower than 20% and 250kW superchargers - The paint is soo weak, we have rock chips all over the car 😢 Otherwise it was great fun and totally comparable to gas cars
@@JarredSutherland we need some social project like Rate Your Charge to report potholes and quality of the roads in CO counties, it's super bad, contractors and local government needs to be investigated for sure
Just starting to watch this video. Agree the Tesla Supercharger nav is getting very wonky. Only modification to my 22 Model 3 LR is that I put CC2s on the car and it has 52k miles now. On multiple trips it will start with 20-25% arrival and can fluctuate down to 4-5% arrival. I suspect that they are struggling with their algorithms now that there are so many more chargers and variations of the models (different packs, wheels, tires, etc.). My rough degregation is around 7% but I suspect it is less. Glad to see your 3 is still running at 126k.
I drive I-70 from Kansas City to Columbia, MO, and back, a couple times per week with my Model 3. I got way too excited when they announced I-70 as the route.
Didn’t realize there’s a screen that shows fractions of available charge left ,if you listen and watch carefully you’ll always learn something new on these road trips
I really like your update with the model three its a fun experience to watch your road trip. I think those superchargers make a huge difference with an EV.
We just completed a drive from Ohio to Colorado and back, around 2600 miles total. The latest software update seems to have some weird quirks for navigation routing to superchargers. We saw it was preferring 150kW when there were 250's just around the corner (basically). But that being said it was a very easy trip. This is the third with our 2021 Model 3 LR and it now has around 53K miles. Edit: Just saw Limon, we hit the charger there twice. Helped a few people to use the bank of 250's since they are never labeled. Edit2: Phantom braking was a major issue for us through Kansas, between 15-20 incidents with it.
Always enjoy the road trips. Thanks for taking out the M3. Took my 2018 LEMR to south Texas this year - no issues (had free SC miles to use). The only difference between my 'short range' car and my wife's long range would have been an extra quick stop on I-70 that hers could have skipped. But, as you say, short charging hops are quickest anyway and the LEMR small battery charges pretty quickly. Seems like we both missed the new V3 that has opened that helps to modernize that KS I-70 route.
Just started watching this and had to say I have a full set of Nokian Ones on order for my ‘21 M3 SR+, based on your recommendations. Getting my OE Michelins replaced after 37K miles. My appointment is in a couple of days. 👍🏼
Purchased our 23MY in January and did the VA to CO and back trip this past July. Hit the same Superchargers as Kyle and Alyssa along the way…. EV road trip skill affirmation baby! Also hit the same stretch of weird phantom breaking in western KS and even discussed the issue with a crew from Wichita that we were charged hopping at the same stops.
Easier way to identify version two super chargers is the silver band on the handle. From as distance it is difficult to see the thickness of the cable.
Great to see some familiar charging stations. We do the Fort Collins to Columbia, MO trip at least 4 times each year. Interesting how the V3's have filled in between the V2's so now we do almost all V3's except for Colby.
Hi, love your channel. Getting ready for our first non-commuting M3 trip shortly, so all these tips help. BTW, I don't know who does your "boogeying between the Superchargers" music towards the end of the video, but it sounds really good at 1.25 playback speed. 😀
Just on the front of the video, can confirm, the road trip vids with your 2019 were the last push required for me ordering my 2021 (barely not a 2022) M3P. You are an advertiser for Tesla! hah!
26:45 - I went to the I-70 diner last year... It was terrible. It took an hour just to get my food, by that time my car was already fully charged. The food wasn't even that good. I'm pretty sure they took a hit from the whole COVID thing because older reviews of it were pretty good.
Do you have plans to get the coolant valve and the PTC heater issue fixed anytime soon? Really would like to see another heatpump Vs PTC challenge this winter, once your car is confirmed to be working 100%!
Last summer, I took my ‘21 M3 SR+ from Sacramento to Louisville. The facts: R/T: ~ 5,500 miles Wh/mi: 242 average Speed: +5 mph over limit Charging stops: 57 Average time @ SC: ~ 25 min. Cost: $526.00 (ICE at $5/gal: $900; $6/ gal: $1,080 [180 gallons @30mph based on ‘21 BMW 330i RWD) Sacramento > Desert Palms, CA (632 miles) Desert Palms > Holbrook, AZ (600 miles) Holbrook > Santa Fe NM (313 miles) Santa Fe > OK City (540 miles) OK City > Memphis TN (600 miles) Memphis > Louisville KY (403 miles) Louisville > St. Louis MO (390 miles) St. Louis > Topeka KS (337 miles) Topeka > Aurora CO (550 miles) Aurora > Salt Lake City UT (556 miles) SLC > Sacramento (661 miles) I had ONE (1!) time I had to wait to plug in: Glenwood Springs CO. Total wait time: 5 minutes. I’ve waited longer in line at the grocery store - or at Costco for gas back in my dark ages (aka when I drove ICE vehicles😮). Also, note in my 2.5 years of travel throughout CA on numerous road trips from Portland OR to San Diego, from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, up and down the PCH, Hwy 101, I-5, US 99, I-80 and numerous mountain roads, state routes, and various highways and byways all over California, weekdays or weekends, mega urban or extremely rural, middle of the day or middle of the night - I’ve never encountered any delays at the many (and with the SR+, I do mean MANY) superchargers I’ve stopped at. Your mileage may vary. Safe travels all!
Experience they will get??? I think you should say they should hope they get. I see no guarantee this will work so seamlessly. In Europe I can charge my Kia at Tesla chargers because we all use the same plug. Tesla cars get the same experience but us non-Tesla drivers do not always. There’s no plug and charge for us. The app is good but sometimes will show incorrect count of available chargers (I think it’s delayed data). When I connect it will show it’s charging but then immediately stop and say it doesn’t work. Sometimes I have to try several times or even move stall before I find one which wants to connect to my car. It may also randomly stop way before it reaches 80% and I will need to replug and restart. I cannot go far away because then I will not get the charge and will instead incur idle fees. The route planning you have in Tesla cars is of course not available for us either.
Ok Kyle, my 2023 Ioniq 5 and 2020 Kia Soul EV could both be set to top charge at a schedule departure time on level 2 EVSE, I have yet to figure that out on my 2023 Tesla model Y long range, so I do what you do charge to 90% and then top charge just as I am getting ready and packing up to depart when we get up the next day. Wish Tesla could incorporate the top charge at scheduled departure time to minimize 100% charge standby time.
I've been binge watching all of your's and Bearded Tesla Guy's road trip videos, because I'm anticipating getting a Tesla of my own in the next 6 months and doing one of these myself. Other than a run-in with a Honda BTG experienced in AZ on one of his trips, I don't see a whole lot of indications of people irrationally raging at Tesla drivers in these videos. Do you ever have to deal with that lately?
CCS/ EA in NC on the 95 corridor is trash 🗑. If it wasn’t for you and Brandon making some of us aware of Circle K chargers I would have been screwed coming through NC. One more incident away from trading my EV for a Model S! Plus the monthly rate for EA has increased to $7 monthly with the same issues.

👍🏻
17:46 lol someone put on outlet sticker on the charger. 😂
I think places like Buc-ee's needs to start adding chragers. If Tesla would add their V4 at places like that, it can make things easier.
Started watching the Model 3 road trips on this channel back in 2020 just to better understand what I should expect while waiting for delivery of my own Model 3.
good job by alyssa for putting the holder back in place
I did a 6000 mile road trip and had 1 problem, it happened when I decided to take a short cut going to Capitan New Mexico, the problem was no superchargers in remote areas, but if I would of stayed on original Navigation there would not have been a problem.. I was able to use level 2 charger in Ruidoso but I had to stay an unplanned overnight stay..
We recently did CO to FL road-trip in 2022 Model 3 Performance too and here are some takeaways:
- Wrapping handle with wet cloth works in 100F+ for sure
- After charging for about 15 miles you get very high consumption, if that’s battery cooling it should be done with charger plugged in as much as possible to extend range
- CO roads are the worst among all the states we been through
- W/o Dog mode we wouldn’t have been able to take this road trip in any car
- Trip planner became quite unstable in predicting battery percentage in last few months, we had legs where it was 20% off
- Tesla needs IR-blocking light tint from factory on all glass, it’s silly that we have to run AC to fight what can be reflected
- Autopilot needs manual override of speed limit, we had many miles in manual mode just because it guessed the speed limit wrong and there is not much we could do
- Trip planner constantly routes us on slow 150kW chargers and vey high SOC instead of going lower than 20% and 250kW superchargers
- The paint is soo weak, we have rock chips all over the car 😢
Otherwise it was great fun and totally comparable to gas cars
CO roads were indeed awful and we also had interesting routing choices to 150kW vs 250 with lower SoC.
I got way too excited when they announced I-70 as the route.
will we get an update on Anna and the taycan
Didn’t realize there’s a screen that shows fractions of available charge left ,if you listen and watch carefully you’ll always learn something new on these road trips
I missed these model 3 roadtrips!
Love your road trip videos and knowledge definitely helps everyone out
I really like your update with the model three its a fun experience to watch your road trip. I think those superchargers make a huge difference with an EV.
Yeah🎉Finally Tesla Road Trip!! The king of EV in the world ❤
Really love the roadtip videos! Great to see how the 100k+ miles Model 3 goes. :)
Beautifully relaxed delivery. Loved it
Nice one! of course we can't wait for the next part.
When are you going retrofit the model 3 with ccs adapter support
Why are phantoms breaking your car in Kansas?
@@Timmymao163
….could have been the witches, it wasn’t the scarecrows, but what do I know I’m no wizard, just a Tin man.
I find a lot of phantom braking comes from heat mirage
Easier way to identify version two super chargers is the silver band on the handle. From as distance it is difficult to see the thickness of the cable.
Great to see some familiar charging stations. We do the Fort Collins to Columbia, MO trip at least 4 times each year. Interesting how the V3's have filled in between the V2's so now we do almost all V3's except for Colby.
It feels like forever since you did a road trip video w/ this car!
Road-trip videos the best!
If Audi switches to NACS, I'll buy a used Etron Prestige. The deals are great, but I want to have reliable charging.
Just a quick note on your promo code, it's only showing an $18 discount in checkout.
When Toyota comes out with their electric car with a solid state battery Tesla is going to be history
Toyota has been promising solid state EVs "in a few years" since 2008.
Do you have plans to get the coolant valve and the PTC heater issue fixed anytime soon?
Really would like to see another heatpump Vs PTC challenge this winter, once your car is confirmed to be working 100%!
Love to see the long-term reliability of the M3! Is the cooling pump the first real mechanical issue you've had with it?
IIRC it's the only one that's Tesla's fault - but they did replace the windshield a while ago
There was a video posted in the last year where the radiator fan was making a terrible noise - presumably, that was fixed.
@@iamnid Ah yeah I remember that
Last summer, I took my ‘21 M3 SR+ from Sacramento to Louisville. The facts:
R/T: ~ 5,500 miles
Wh/mi: 242 average
Speed: +5 mph over limit
Charging stops: 57
Average time @ SC: ~ 25 min.
Cost: $526.00 (ICE at $5/gal: $900; $6/ gal: $1,080 [180 gallons @30mph based on ‘21 BMW 330i RWD)
Sacramento > Desert Palms, CA (632 miles)
Desert Palms > Holbrook, AZ (600 miles)
Holbrook > Santa Fe NM (313 miles)
Santa Fe > OK City (540 miles)
OK City > Memphis TN (600 miles)
Memphis > Louisville KY (403 miles)
Louisville > St. Louis MO (390 miles)
St. Louis > Topeka KS (337 miles)
Topeka > Aurora CO (550 miles)
Aurora > Salt Lake City UT (556 miles)
SLC > Sacramento (661 miles)
I had ONE (1!) time I had to wait to plug in: Glenwood Springs CO.
Wish i would have known you guys stopped at the Lawrence superchargers! Would have been a pleasure to meet you guys. Long time fan
Would love to know how much it would cost to fix your battery cooling issue. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
2024 is going to be a very interesting year. When superchargers open to non-Tesla EVs.
I hope to see Non-Tesla road-trips on SC vs CCS networks.
Nice to see the trusty old Model 3 back in action! I wonder how much it would cost to get the coolant valve fixed now that it's out of warranty.
I love Tesla I want a regular one
Thx 4 sharing the road trip. I enjoyed watching.
I've never seen any bad interactions with other drivers in my Model Y. For the most part, I wouldn't worry about it either.
Just used your promo code for the tire inflator. This will be an upgrade from my 12v plug inflator. Thanks guys!!
did you get $50 or $20 off?

“No SHFT” spice/rub is great in variety of beef, bison, poultry, fish. Their overall products are great!….
Fix the cooling valve! :)
