That map UI makes me regret having eyes
The latest map upgrade with the 11-22 BMW IX software upgrade is much better. I hated the BMW map program at first and would only use Apple Car play which which gives me lots of options of Map programs of course, but again the latest BMW software update seems to be very good and they have made some significant jpg dates to the map program including battery pre-conditioning in route.

No worries at all about any delays in getting some videos out -- you guys have been insanely busy. And it was quite nice to see the desert Southwest on this cold winter day -- a nice change of scenery. And yes, the iX is an impressive car -- but it's like three or four times as much as what many of us can afford. "A car for the 1%," or not much more than that. I will always want more in the way of "Battery electric vehicles for the rest of us" -- and not necessarily just the "used car" series you have been doing. Yes, we have seen some ID.4 coverage, but if you can spend a lot more time with the low end of the price range, that's the only kind of thing most of us can even begin to consider. Thanks as always for all of the coverage you have been providing -- there have been plenty of interesting things to cover.
Hopefully the new leaf that will be on the CMF-EV platform will keep it’s less expensive price. If they can get 250-270 out of the 60 kw battery that would help keep it more affordable. And if GM can deliver on the Equinox ev price we will see. But them talking about removing android auto and apple carplay might make it DOA for most

Kyle, thanks for sharing the details of the trip in the iX. In your last few videos you have been pretty dismayed with the CCS charging infrastructure, so I was wondering if you have been trying to get a person from Electrify America to publicly comment on the crappy state of their network? Maybe comment on why the new BTC units failed in the extremely cold we had this week? I hope you can get a person from EA to comment, because they are the weak point in moving forward in expanding the EV environment.

Thank you Kyle as always for your videos. Thank you for "taking the bullet" on EV charging. You're the reason I had the confined in leasing a Model 3 Performance 3 years ago. But I was hoping 3 years would be enough so I could get an actual quality built car like the BMW now. But clearly the EV infrastructure is not up to the roadtripping task. I'm definitely not putting up with the BS you experience. Damn, I'll just have to get another Tesla. Maybe 3 more years will be enough for these other companies to get their act together.
I came to the exact opposite conclusion but based on the same evidence when I bought an EV6. I’m an engineer and like to learn and mess with stuff. Teslas these days are for people who can’t be bothered to think one iota about trip planning that the car doesn’t spoon feed them. There’s a huge market for that, and I’m jealous of the nice SC network, but it’s immaterial at this point since it’s relatively unclear if Tesla will truly open up SCs to CCS cars. This summer it seemed like Tesla was going to play well with others based on the June 2022 preset release about building CCS hardware or adapters. But the fall 2022 NACS PR stunt seems like they may not follow through. It’s all very silly we don’t have one plug to rule them all 10 years after the LEAF and Model S were first released. 🤷🏼♂️
@@skyemalcolm Agreed, one plug to rule them all. As an engineer I’d hope you’d want the proven, reliable, durable, and future proofed plug that is also the easiest to use for the consumer. The Tesla one. - I can very much appreciate as an engineer you want to “mess with stuff.” For me road-tripping is a fun thing, I don’t want stress introduced. It isn’t about the route planning for me … it’s the confidence I can go anywhere… just like an ICE car. I want to go my way, where ever my nose points. And no electric vehicles nor network, other than Tesla, can do that currently. I am SOOOO looking forward to the day when I can have any car I want and have the same confidence. Believe me I would love to have the beautiful interior of the EV6. And CarPlay! - Or in my case a super quick, well handling sports sedan that can beat a Model 3 Performance in every measurable way at an appropriate price … which unfortunately also doesn’t exist yet. Taycan, e-tron GT are the only choices that interest me but both are way too expensive and each have less range. 🤦♂️
@@myharryface I’m not claiming you’re one of them, but there are folks who worship a NASC plug when in reality they are experiencing a vertically integrated system that could theoretically do just as well with a different and more capable industry standard plug called CCS1 or actually in reality Tesla in Europe already used CCS2. Here in the US CCS1 allows V2G deployed by Ford don’t forget. If the Tesla plug could have done V2G don’t you think a company that makes powerwalls and cars and the plug have already done it? So yeah actually before the NACS PR stunt came out I assumed NA Tesla was going to announce with say the Cyber Truck or whatever that they would move to CCS1. Since they already make the adapters now Tesla owners have zero downside as SCs move to CCS1 and SCs become a new revenue stream for all other brands, zero of which are going to switch (just my guess as someone who’s been working in the automotive industry for 27 years). If I’m wrong and everyone jumps on board the NACS im not going to complain at all, but then you have the same situation with CCS1 cars that you’re currently seeing with ChaDeMo LEAFs. All these decisions have real consequences obviously. Anyway that’s what I hope happens, Tesla plug goes away and CCS1 becomes the standard (or hell CCS2 with 480 v 3 phase AC charging, which is better for industrial installations where stepping down to 208 v is bloody expensive). But I think what’s most likely at this point is we have two plugs going forward for years until one is effectively outlawed like it took in Europe. I don’t think Tesla has a benevolent bone in its corporate body unfortunately, as they should since they report to their shareholders. It is what it is.

@@myharryface yep I was doing a charge test on my local EA and EVgo stations after I saw Kyle’s cold chargers down fiasco. It was about zero Fahrenheit at the time. Unpleasant but that had little to do with the cable, more the 20-30 mph winds and snow. I’ve done ~100 EA, about 15 each ChargePoint and EVgo and a couple Shell Recharge DCFC sessions this year. I’ve never charged a Tesla so can’t speak to it. But I trust the reasons behind a thick cable with cooling margin that abides by industry standards rather than one company going cowboy who’s unaccountable to anyone. 2nd Gen CCS handles look a lot better and will fix the weak wrist problems. Better station designs with pull through spot will allow perfect positioning and make this all moot. It’s all getting better and I’m happy to be playing with the stuff and driving electric. I’m an interstate junkie and did 30k on a PHEV before realizing I needed to go full electric so we’ve got a used LEAF for around town stuff and the EV6 for road tripping. I wish you many enjoyable and safe adventures with your EVs as well!

Love the Road tripping videos... The iX looks amazing for road trips.
The navigation seems a but slow.. and the routing for chargers.
I did a test using my cheap android phone... I picked a specific address 1500 miles away.
"Ok Google... navigate to XYZ address"
From the time I said Ok Google.. it took 30 seconds, to respond, then ask If I was aware it was 22 hours drive.. I say yes.. . it says Ok.. starting navigation and beginning the route.
I am sure the BMW has android auto.. so you could do the same and have the map show on the big screen.
But the built in interface sure seems slow.
Other than that... FANTASTIC!!!

I as a management accounting student come up with a solution to a free charge option available, as sometimes when power is stored and cannot be pumped back into the main rig as it is generated by solar, it is cheaper to let it go free than to have it stored or converted and pumped back to the main rig. So, they are engineering the social climate for such a scenario (excess load) if something like this happens in the future.
Lol Kyle . You stayed at the same Hampton Inn I stayed at when I was in Vegas. I can't believe that charger is STILL broken. I was there months ago. The secret to using the hotel's BTCP level 2 charger is you have to call the 800 customer service number on the charger. Have them reset from their end. It should work.
Man, i would prioritize charging locations that were covered and had pull-through charging like a regular gas station. If you build them, I will come.
We use the Baker Ca EA chargers often with our EV6. Usually over half of them are broken. Though a large Tesla station next to it, many Tesla owners use the EA chargers instead to avoid drama.. Not usual to witness feuds and people cutting each other off and heated debates at the Tesla Chargers. Disturbing bunch those Tesla owners.

May be it is complimentary because you have to put up with a lot of BS… and until they get to the level of positive experience that Tesla supercharger are offering for many years. Sure, your home EV charger is good when you are near home. But when you travel, the CCS chargers is a big unknown… When you watch Kyle trips to Europe (Norway, Germany) you see and you understand what it takes to make it happen.
How come besides Tesla, where are the other EV car manufacturer doing ? Almost ZERO. That says it all.
I suspect that two years of free EA charging (limited to 30 minutes) comes with the IX. I got it with the BMW i4 I bought a few weeks ago.
That BTC/EVconnect station had been broken since August apparently...
One station in Gledwood Springs that was less than optimal. All other worked great.
Except the ones in Green River, UT that only put out 30kw, but yeah, only one didn't work if you don't count those.
I hope one day you might considering doing something across Canada using the Canadian DC fast charging network Electric Canada etc. Would be interesting to see how much of a gap and how behind Canada might be compared to the US.

Love your channel, especially as you are making the videos around places I used to drive while in the US. As an EV owner (EV6 LR) in Denmark, we are planning a road trip in the US this fall (SLC, Yellow Stone, South Orgeon, Crater Lake, Crescent City, SFO, Monterey, Death Valley, LAS, parcs Southern Utah/ Northern Arizona and back SLC) of 4 weeks. I came to believe that doing so in an EV is not possibble, but actually it appears possible, when I see your videos. Any thoughts on this? And secondly, where/ how can we rent an EV with the iX size (family of 2 grown ups and two kids of 10 and 12)? Did not see such option on the rental sites. And finally, what is the best way to charge for a good rate, when one doesnt own the car (in DK I get the Ionity European network rather cheap, as I own the Kia EV6)

I used that charger in Baker for my Rivian on my way to Vegas. Great stations, getting closer to Tesla Supercharger ease of use, faster though, than my experience with Tesla Superchargers - mine always dropped like a rock after 3-5min :(

Kyle, thanks for this review (and many others, too). Based on your reviews and others, too, I've ordered an IX 50. But I have a question: being British but living in the US, how come I can have a home charger with 48KW, and the Brits can only manage 11KW at home, and think it's fast? And UK has 240v while we have 110v?
Every US home has 240. Delivered as 110 v out of phase between two live conductors so max limitation is current for heat reasons. You should be able to get 48A continuous at 240V which is 11kW. You have max 240*200A (depending on the panel support) capacity delivered which is how you get 48kW
Both the US and UK have 240V for electric chargers. But to get 11kW, you need to deliver almost 48 amps through the wires. This means using a minimum of #6 awg THHN rated wire via a 60 amp breaker (80% rule). I doubt many UK houses have such a capacity, hence they would be limited to a much smaller kW figure.

Vehicle manufacturers need to be putting big, big money into charging infrastructure in order to get the charging experience up to same level as the EV driving experience, whether that means that they start building their own *public CCS networks* or dump huge funding and resources into an existing company. Just building a great car and hoping that some other company provides the charging is the wrong way to do it at this point in EV history. Lots of great EVs available now, but Tesla is still taking their lunch away with cars that aren’t as good simply because they put the money into developing a better charging experience. Absolutely no reason that the other vehicle manufacturers couldn’t do the same and probably do it much faster and better since they have absolutely massive resources and influence compared to Tesla (especially Tesla of 10 or even 5 years ago)

Why did they make the IX uglier than the XM?
Because designers have to make a name for themselves. It's not always a good name (hello Bangle butt E60 5-series), but they do make a name for themselves.
The infotainment system is a disaster (slow CPU/GPU, slow software). Looks like maps on a phone from 2007.
You need an “Out of Spec EV Charging” App and channel for folks to report horrible charging experience and issues. Interview on camera executives and car companies. The app could help people. ALSO NO PROVISIONS FOR DISABLED AND CHARGING ASSISTANCE ! Nothing to address this and ADA actions could be coming.
How would that app be different than Plug share?

When you watch Kyle trips to Europe (Norway, Germany) you understand what it takes to make EVs a basic experience equal to internal combustion vehicle (gas station).
Besides Tesla, what are the other EVs car manufacturer doing ? Almost ZERO. That says it all. I speak to car dealer, like Audi, Ford and others… and they don’t get it. Put many charging stations in your parking lot… open to public…. And you will sell millions of EVs…. like Tesla.
Making fun of the Ionic for not doing the out of spec road tripping lifestyle for plugging in at 30% when you literally plugged in at 33% the previous stop. 🙄

Kyle kills me with the "charger monitoring". How does he know where they are going, and if they NEED all the charge they can get or not? Yes, there are some morons out here that unnecessarily overcharge/ hold up a stall..... but SOMETIMES you NEED all the charge that you can get. As smart as he believes he is, he should know this.

Two reasons I wouldn't buy. The CCS charging experience, and a 3rd rate route planner. And for what? $135,000? Yeah, a great car, but with 3 deal killers. The CCS charging shenanigans is why I bought a Model Y. What a fantastic car!!!

Fun road trip vid! I am sorry but I gotta say it - my god that car is one of the ugliest modern cars I've ever seen. BMW should be ashamed of themselves. Anyone who buys one should be ashamed of themselves, and of bmw. I've seen more handsome fiat multipla's!!! That and the garbage non touch screens / idrive and the garbage sat nav would really put me off. The fact that it's the complete opposite of cheap doesn't help it's case either! They've fallen such a long way since the amazing I3 and i8 have bmw. Tut.

Dude, you having to comment every time someone's not "living the Out of Spec Lifestyle" is getting borderline obnoxious. Most people don't care if you can save an hour's time if you pull in under 10% and leave at 55%. They want to charge up past 70% even if it takes longer. So what? You don't have to comment every time you see someone charging in a way you don't personally approve of.

Agree with Aaron, 100%. Love the content and appreciate all the technical insights, but in some cases you just don't have a choice with a charging stop. I road trip with a baby under a year old, and I have to often stop when the baby needs to stop. And that means trying to stretch as much as possible, but stopping even with a higher SoC and charging higher. Besides, a 40 min stop breezes by with a baby. 🙂
