How interesting. I've lost about a stone in the last 6 months through dieting and I've noticed this. My backside has disappeared and the bulk in my legs has gone. I figured it was just a function of losing weight, but maybe I need to do more resistance training.
Great work losing the weight, but yes now its time to build the muscle back. If you are not doing anything at the moment start with 3 full body workouts per week.
❤ I wish i had started younger...my brother who is 56 now is in excellent shape ( motivated , goes to gym every morning at 3 am, before he goes to work ) As his baby sister, I'm proud of him, just getting started ya know? I lack encouragement from another . So your videos help. Thank You
You absolutely need cardio for heart and lung health. How many people die form heart attacks vs being skinny fat. I do cardio and resistance training, thats the key, hard work. Eating sensibly is a must too. Plenty of protein.
@@JG-nx3jg yes cardio essential. However I like to mix lots of low level activities ie walking with more short burst intervals 20 mins. I find that a good combo with resistance work to develop good fitness, stay lean but without breaking down too much muscle. Protein vital
You're saying "resistance training". Are you referring to "strength training"? I'm talking about lifting weights. That is the key, strength training especially after 50!! (I'm not saying stop cardio, that's key too. it's both!)
Yes I mean strength training. I used resistance because not everyone likes to train with weights although I believe they are the best for building muscle.
With respect I think everyone over complicates this…. I’ve weighed 12 stone since my late teens….54 now (6 foot ) Never weigh myself but on the rare occasion I do I’m never even a pound over and I’ve never seen a gym or a dumbbell in my life My secret…. A mirror. You get out of the shower in the morning and have a quick look Am I starting to develop a belly ?? If yes simple…stop eating as much as you currently are as what you (obviously) are currently eating is too much for your body type and is been stored as excess fat. Multi million pound diet and exercise businesses the world over making money hand over fist and it’s all completely unnecessary ( unless of course your training for a specific outcome, sports etc). just stop eating as much ….simples 🤷🏼♂
@@stevemorley agreed but unfortunately most people carry on eating and drinking the same and then wonder what is going on or blame the inevitable middle aged spread which I don’t think it is if you manage yourself properly. Like you I am 54 and only 3-4 pounds over what I weighed at 25. I have less muscle now and a little more fat but working on resolving that at the moment. It takes more work and discipline at this age but welk worth it. Thanks for sharing
Bill Boyd used to run a gym where I live. My wife looked after him in a nursing home before he died. He was in his fifties, I think. The people who live a long time are thin,, not heavily muscled, high VO2 max and a low resting pulse, indicating a low resting metabolic rate, which requires less dna damaging oxygen free radicals to keep you fed. Fat or overly well muscled individuals with a low VO2 max die younger and age faster with a shorter healthy lifespan as well.
Great thanks for sharing. Being cardiovascular fit with a lean mobile athletic build (think boxer or football player) is what I promote on this channel as the ideal combination for men and women in their 50's and beyond so it's good to know it helps with longevity and healthspan as well.
All these videos are wrong and pointless. The way you look has very little to do with the type of training. Genetics, age and nutrition are the main factors when it comes to your body. If you have a `bad` genes you'll get either fat or skinny fat no matter what you do when you get older (50 and up). That's just a matter of fact.

A lot of wisdom here. I am right in the middle of this and there is, as you say, only one thing that helps and that is consistant training.
It is a non negotiable but well worth the investment for what you get back
Hello, thanks for this excellent video and advice. Cheers 👍👍
Thanks for watching, good to meet you.
As a qualified sports scientist and nutritionist, this is very good advice.
Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it.
This is great advice especially as we get older. You know what you're talking about 👍
Thanks for the support, much appreciated.

That’s great to hear just start and figure it out as you go along. Forget about what has happened before it’s not too late.
Focus on weight bearing exercise, so walking up hills and steps for legs and lifting weights for upper body.
Agreed. I’ve seen my legs develop muscle just by doing a lot of hill walking. Also great for cardio fitness. I love it
