So true! As a women of color, sometimes the journey can look different because there’s structural traits that need to be adjusted for. These systems, especially when they were created, really centered around European features, I believe. I loved hearing about her journey and is really helpful. 🤍 Again, both these looks are great! Love the earrings.
I love that you said kids might be our untapped resource! My daughter is almost 7 and she is so intuitive about whether what I put on resonates with me.
This is something I have experienced as a daughter, even today when I shop with my mom or she asks for advice, she is always the most pleased with the outfit I recommend her ❤
My little sister is my fashion analyst. She gives me incredibly raw honest advice and doesn't care if she hurts my feelings. It's dead useful when she's not being a butthead
I so relate to what she said about ethnicity and the style systems. Minority ethnicities are so often typed as natural. I think it’s that actually many (particularly White people) are so blind to nuance in other groups and their unconscious biases of other minorities plays such a big part. As a middle eastern, Hispanic woman, I was often typed as natural and dramatic because people perceive me as having strong features but when I compare myself to my family members - I grew up wishing I had their strong feature and it took me so long to accept my moderate features. So yes I think I have natural and dramatic (and romantic) but I’ve learned it’s moderated by classic - which I think is the type that is most unconsciously associated with more whiteness bc unconsciously we learn that Whiteness is the standard which we then associate as being balanced or classic.
Exploring style for bipoc can be such a frustrating experience because most analysis for western style is centered on white features and white American cultural/European concepts of femininity. But I'm noticing a lot of us are figuring it out more easily now because there are communities of us who share what we've learned. Realizing I'm not an autumn was huge for me (haven't been professionally typed but I did trial and error with makeup since that's my special interest), and I think Makhosi and I came across the same Reddit thread about Kibbe and biwoc! :)
Makhosi, your mannerisms, voice and expressions say more about your essence than a still photograph. If i just looked at a photograph I would think you would be a pure Romantic. But in seeing you in action Ethereal is far more apparent. Your measured exacting serene way of communicating tells a different story.
Mrs. Makhosi shinning ✨️ in that summer grey top. I also went through an incredible style and color journey for my wedding. It was a gift to myself! 😊 I am also a bright spring like Gabrielle ❤ you are exquisite in bright spring colors G. 🎉 I'm so excited for this series.
What a great guest. And I find her very relatable, on a personal level. I was excited as she began to describe the point that she started to hone in on her style. I also feel I am ethereal and romantic mixed with either dramatic or classic... I relate to everything she says about what looks good on her. I look much better in anything antique or ancient, in costume looks and fairy-princess dresses, and have even also found tunic tops to work best for me... I pretty much only look good in delicate lace-up granny boots. No jeans for me either! And I also find her struggle to remove the armour and be as soft and yin as she really is very relatable. Also, being called a granny, haha.
This is so interesting and relatable. I’m a fellow dark-eyed Summer with a lot of ethereal essence. I have had Mermaid and Selkie (seal person) comparisons all my life, especially now that I live on an Island and swim in the sea regularly. So that was the easiest part of my essence to find. I loved hearing about this style journey, thank you.
Great conversation, thank you both! ❤ I feel like Makhosi is my style sister. 😂 I am also a soft summer leaning dark with ethereal-classic essence. Patterns are only possible on skirts and only if they are not too prominent. And I have a trick on how to wear pure linen with these features: The very high quality linen that is soft and flowy works well in bright colors. I have some white linen shirts and beige linen pants and I look very good in them. Cotton t-shirts work only when they are delicate and on the tighter side. But my merino t's look great in both short and longsleeved versions. ❤✨️
Maybe she could try David Zyla's system. He has got a "Mermaid Archetype" it's called Iridescent Summer. And even if not, the discoveries in his system are worth it
I related so much to Mrs Makhosi’s style preferences and the challenge to having an ethereal essence in the everyday routines of life. I am much older and live a very reclusive lifestyle by choice. Soft is my dominant characteristic but I live in a rural community surrounded by corn fields and where the fashion is jeans and tee shirts or sweatshirts, it’s challenging so I have pretty much adopted a loungewear attitude. 😢
I undrstand that. It can be difficult to go against the surrounding areas view of fashion. I would find little ways or details that make you feel authentic in your style but that still maintain your comfort and lifestyle needs
This was such a joy to listen to. You ladies are both so wonderful! I feel like I may have to explore the ethereal essence. Due to my close set eyes and high contrast level, I ruled it out. Yet I relate very strongly to being an old soul or grandmother and also have an intense calmness. I also thought it to be a sign of weakness, but there is something so powerful about walking through a storm and not getting swept up into it. I recently attended a wedding and recieved many compliments on my (unintended) greek godess look.
Loving the podcast so much! Looking forward to hearing more style journeys! Such an articulate, amazing woman (well, both of you are! ) Extremely enjoyable! Can't stop with the superlatives! Thank you both so much!
I'm so excited to hear this! I've really enjoyed making the podcast and taking it in new directions, so I'm thrilled to hear it's been helpful. And yes, she is so articulate and inspirational!
Amazing episode and such great insights. It's inspiring to see the results of the years of trial and error and ultimately trusting her intuition. Makhosi looks so empowered and standing in her own. I love how eloquently she was able to analyze and relate her journey. What an amazing first guest for this series!
You two are so insighteful, and elegant both in your ways and fashion senses, it is healing my brain listening to you talking together haha Thank you for this video !
This was so helpful! I have so much in common with Makhosi. I had my colors done by house of color and am a true autumn but really struggled on the style piece because I identify a lot with ethereal as part of my blend, but ethereal is associated with more iridescent colors. Where I landed as far as defining my style is “earth goddess” - think women in Mucha paintings. Anyhow great episode!
Omg I loved this wow. This is amazing. So many points I agreed with. Hearing how someone got to express themselves and feel confident through time is so nice. I relate to Makhosi so much. I’m black and had a very similar color analysis and Kitchener experience with autumn, then winter, now spring, but I’ve always been self typed. Her ending point on learning what different Kitchener features look like in a face is so accurate and especially what it looks like for YOUR race and ethnicity.
This was so helpful! I really appreciate the depth and complexity of this conversation. I really relate to challenges in the style space for BIPOC people--especially around essence. I've had a similar journey with etherial essence where examples tend to be pale and willowy. .
This was such a great listen! It has given me so much clarity and so much to chew on while moving through my fashion journey! Definitely resonate with all of the style line difficulties that come with SD and have found pencil skirts and flowy tops work really well with me too!
OMG the "I very easaly look completly homeless" was exactly why I realized I am NOT a Natural typ. I got typed as SD, but eventualy I realized the Diva Chic overwhelms me. That made me land on DC and that seems to work best.
This is so cool for me to learn about! I’m a definite SD myself (any amount of diva chic just blends right in with me), and a lot of my friends are SN, so I’m familiar with that type too. But while watching this video, I kept thinking “huh, she doesn’t quite fit either of those ID’s, but she also has too much ‘presence’ to be gamine or romantic, I think… so ?” It’s like the rest of us forget that the Classic family exists! She’s a good example of it
I relate to, seriously, everything Makhosi said (as a theatrical romantic). Some suggestions for TR and cold weather might work beautifully for you. Merino wool is a lovely fabric that drapes and wraps well. Thanks for sharing this discussion!
@@Gabriellearrudadesign Not very cold weather; I should have specified. 😊 Merino can be worn in any weather, even hot! Because it regulates temperature, breathes, and handles ambient moisture very well. But it can have a lovely winter vibe. Something like a light to medium weight draped or wrapped top would be perfect for FL winters. Just a very elevated long sleeve.
"This was genuinely one of my favourite videos from your channel. It provided great insight and addressed very relatable struggles. I actually watched the video twice because I enjoyed it so much. It was nice to see a non-stereotypical summer who is also a person of colour (POC). I think it might help people who couldn't see themselves in the typical representation of the seasonal palettes.
This means a lot! I'm really glad you resonated with it and enjoyed it. I was hoping this would be the response to this series, and I really lucked out have Makhosi on as my first guest for the Style Files. She's so inspirational
@@Gabriellearrudadesign I also think that the both of you had great chemistry, which made the content even better. I'm truly looking forward to the next installment😀😀.
Great conversation! Definitely have to think about some thoughts that were shered. I hope I will be someday at the same place as Makhosi. Recently I finally found out that I'm Dark Autumn after years of shopping winter colours and it was revolutionary. Waiting for more discoveries.
Really loved this podcast. Makhosi you are so beautiful. I'm so happy you have shared your fashion evolution with us. You are looking radiant. Great advice by Gaby here too that we can all use for ourselves. Great podcast❤
Having known many eccentric characters in my lifetime, I feel like many of them work in opposition to an element of their life. They dress from another time. My grandmother was a higher level nurse in the cardiac ward of the hospital. But she did her nails constantly to keep them impeccable & red.
This podcast really resonated with me - everything she said I related to. I'm 5ft 6, have a romantic body type but struggle with florals, not at all motherly, drapey light fabrics work well for me too and love goddess style dress. So I learnt so much - pretty sure I can't pull of the mermaid/ethereal look, but it has made me think about exploring other essences and not discount anything - thank you!!
I have a similar color season story as well - I had always been put into dark winter or autumn color seasons because I have dark hair, dark eyes and darker skin like some many WOC. But I realized I am a summer season, and since then, it’s been a game-changer for my style.
Amazing conversation, quite thought provoking to be honest. Thanks to Makhosi to share her wisdom with us! Can't wait for the next episode - and you look so gorgeous in this outfit, Gabrielle ❤
Love this interview, and the concept of the style files, I relate to so many of the steps in your style journey Makhosi. Thank you for sharing and adding your voice and perspective to the personal style conversation
This is sooooo interesting and reflects my problem with the world so much 😂 the way I dress doesn’t reflect my soft, „ethereal“ inner self, that people cannot put me in the box they expected and get confused. I always thought I was dramatic, natural, gamine (also because my Kibbe ID is dramatic), but in reality, oversized makes me drown, dramatic can feel to heavy and restricted. I never thought ethereal could be an option, because my face doesn’t look like the „celebrity examples“.
This was fascinating. Thank you, ladies. I kept hearing clues in her that I have found in my classic body (haven’t done essences yet). You’ve inspired me to keep looking.
Hi Makoshi, thank you for telling your story. I am too an ethereal with a not so easy past. Surviving has brought me a lot of strength and some wisdom, but I did lose my softness and therefore a part of myself along the way. Or at least it's hidden behind dramatic elements so I could feel powerful. Which often looks ridiculous on my ethereal natural appearance. With healing comes getting to know myself again and learning what's me and what's the mask. And the scariest part, letting the mask go and embracing the softness. Embracing myself. And trusting this softness will make me even stronger, because it means being my authentic self and there's nothing more powerful than that. Who knew getting a new wardrobe could go this deep😂 I think 'Polished Aphrodite' from the truth is beauty website could maybe be a nice inspiration for you. It's a mix of Ethereal Classic and Romantic. Or maybe 'Alluring angel', the mix of Ethereal and Romantic, although that might be a bit much romantic for your liking. Besides ethereal I do see some classic in your face. Also you feel at home in classic neutrals, I think it suits you very well. And you have a certain elegance which I feel might be more then just the demure and elegance of the ethereal. You also told about draping or accents at the waist, a little romantic would give just that little bit of extra shape, what maybe would be missing with pure ethereal and classic.
Makhosi, I was on UA-cam trying to find help for finding clothes, for everyday. I could see your softness and angelic essence immediately. I’m a soft summer, Angelic/Ethereal essence - only recently realised. I can so relate to what much of you said. I’m a 60 yo, white woman, with white/grey, long curly hair. Ethereal’s have great strength. Our strength is quiet, calm, measured… most of the time but I think we just express rage in a very different way to most. Thank you Gabrielle and Makhosi. Still need to work out how to walk to large dogs in the woods, dressed like Galadriel.. particularly when they’ve just rolled in deer poop. We never see that in Lord of the Rings… 😂😂😂
I really loved hearing a realistic style journey. I hope that you can find other people who can talk about more interesting essence combos. I am classic/natural and still trying to figure out my third.
1:02:22 oh I felt that! Flamgam here and the kibbe recommendations technically fit my body, but it doesn’t fit me. Have natural, ethereal, & romantic in my blend so…those super cute stiffer lines & piping & super gamine elements look amazing on some other flamgams, but I feel lost. Think I look great in sort of “elegant bohemian” (especially dresses) which means maybe there is sharpness in the neckline & it has wide smocking around the midsection, but then flowy sleeves & skirt portion (shortened to show my ankles) & then let my wavy/curly hair flow freely & look kind of wild & messy. Then I like to add a cool chunky shoe or boots. There is something about that pull towards certain looks that I think hints at your essence blend.
Also, sometimes total strangers can offer interesting insight since they are experiencing you for the first time. Lol once I attended a retreat & towards the end someone brought up Kibbe. And this woman said when she first saw me she thought “oh wow! A flamboyant gamine with a romantic essence!” 😂 it was fun to have some of my conclusions affirmed by a stranger/new friend.
Such a fun video! Three things: 1. I was ready by about 22:00 to lock in a guess of SC for her Kibbe ID and I WILL NOT be swayed 😋 She's more delicate in the nose and jaw than a lot of SDs, her vibe SCREAMS Graceful Lady, and ruling out SC bc she has locs feels closed-minded to me. So idk do whatever with THAT lol. 2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the implication she made that we're all telling on ourselves on Halloween 🤔 Going to obsess on this well into November kbye. 3. I def need to talk about my style but prob with a therapist instead 🤣 Tl;dr My gut instinct is dynamite, my loved ones are NOT good at this, and Kitchener might have two missing essences. It's giving mad scientist but it's workinggggg...
I didn’t talk about it but I spent a lot of time specifically around what length of lines work for me. I shine best in long maxi, ok in midi lengths and absolutely cant pull off above the knee looks. I have to pull on a long duster or maxi top to really pull off shorts or head to toe monochrome to even look “ok”
@@theroyalshaman Ah ok NOW it makes sense. As a DC I feel that haha. Things can get snooty over here in Classic-Land and I thought you might be one of us who got turned away over some nonsense. Shine on queen!
55:40 I so relate when Makhosi said she was resonating with "how I want to see myself vs how I actually am." The Soft Summer, Soft Dramatic Ethereal Goddess is beautiful on you! And where would a 🧜♀️ mermaid want to live? ✨️ Florida 😊
Such a great conversation. I’ve had a very similar journey with a lot of the same elements and inner view as you Makhosi. Super inspired by your perspective. When you talked about your tension between the edgier aspects and leaning into your ethereal essence resonated with me personally so much. I think the essences are mistakenly shown on a linear spectrum. I now think it’s a circle. That ethereal and dramatic aren’t actually opposites… (hyper fem and then masculine energy). I think you and I might straddle where they connect again in essence? Just a thought that came up when listening to you. Thank you both for your creativity and sharing! 💜
I think a lot of people get thrown off by "soft" as a descriptor for colors. Any blended color is technically soft (muted) to some degree. There *are* soft *dark* colors so if you are soft AND Dramatic, it's not contradictory in my mind at least. Depending on whether the hue was softened by grey, brown or a complementary hue will determine how coollish/warmish the color looks. Soft colors aren't automatically cool with a capital C, but they are cooler in comparison to a more saturated hue. I see this in eyeshadow palettes all the time. People or the manufacturer describing a palette as cool when it's not, it's just desaturated warm colors.
There is a google form to fill out here: forms.gle/4tARr1UV2dRRMzgD7 I'm working through the current applicants, so if you don't hear back asap, just be patient👍👍
It is a challenge indeed! I do not fit the idea of "moderate height" in Kibbe terms. But when I see myself in public, I am both taller and shorter than many people and there are many people much narrower than me - i.e. I am actually moderate/average height and build in my country. So it's difficult to tell if I have Kibbe petite, or if I'm within Classic because both have tailored fit as their recommendations. I've mostly settled in soft gamine but I still have moments where I question if I'm actually a soft classic. Oh well, hahaha!
I am 5"2' and I'm pretty sure I have "length". I have a very long neck. I think that has something to do with it. My point being, I'm not sure if you can say a height cut off for any type.
When I had my first Color analysis done it was from an older lady who offered a 1 time class at the local Adult Ed school. I went with my mom & grandma. I think it cost 10 bucks? This was in the 80s. I had the OG CMB book by Carol Jackson & I thought I was an Autumn since the Spring examples were always very blonde with blue or green eyes. The lady analyzed me as an Autumn as well. Fast forward several years & I had the money to get professinally color analyzed (not CMB) & I was classified as a Warm Golden Spring & given 40 something color swatches. That felt much more "me" & was kind of a combo of the Autumn & Spring palette. Most of the shades were medium value & medium saturation except for my yellows (no mustard) I had intuitively been drawn to most of the colors that suited me (except black which I still wear since finding Spring colors isn't always easy) & very much aligned with what my mom & other people complimented me on when I wore them. Both my mom & grandma were typed as Winter (this was before the 12 & 16 sub category system) The biggest challenge is not buying colors that are too soft, especially when purchasing online since photography often distorts color. Red *is* in my palette but it's the biggest challenge for me to wear since I prefer more wine/berry shades of red over tomato or poppy & I'm not a red lipstick kinda girl.
I don't think there's one right answer to this. I would also suggest you create a keyword list of items that you find work for you that are ethereal and then try to expand to their cold weather alternative. For instance soft draped silks might transition to soft light velvets that still allow for draping (not too heavy). Soft silk jerseys might translate to angora knits that are plush and delicate. But those initial keywords that you resonate will be helpful, I know kitchener also recommends like fur trimmed boots and I think some interesting cuts could also work leaning more toward the issey miyake side of the spectrum
Try Dressing Your Truth and solve all your problems. I ditched seasons as they don't work for me, but I still use SN from Kibbe system and Essences to spice things up. She nailed it, but DYT is the shortcut.
At this time I don't have permission to share that. But if you're part of my facebook group she has a couple posts there that show her style journey beautifully
Well for Makhosi that's her next style extension that she will be exploring. I would suggest for a person who wanted to know "what a goddess would wear" to start with defining what amounts of "goddess-ness" you need in an outfit and integrating details, softer fabrics, and details like bell sleeves, diagonal hems, with more casual pieces. A pair of leggings in a soft muted tone with a draped diagonal hem or ruched top with some ethereal jewelry right be the perfect fit. But there's no "one outfit" fits all.
Maybe they all knew it was meant to fail, and this was actually a racket for a dude to make a shit ton of cash and a bunch of rich people to abandon their lives and start new lives.

@@pouchika5672 thank you! 🤗
My husband says "that's interesting" as well! It always means something is way off in his opinion.
Have we cracked the code 😂😂
Love this so much. I related to her story completely. Thanks. 💚
Glad you liked it! I’m Very grateful she shared
Great conversation! Definitely have to think about some thoughts that were shered.
I hope I will be someday at the same place as Makhosi. Recently I finally found out that I'm Dark Autumn after years of shopping winter colours and it was revolutionary. Waiting for more discoveries.
Happy to hear this new discovery has been so amazing for your style. Finding your season can be really empowering
Really loved this podcast. Makhosi you are so beautiful. I'm so happy you have shared your fashion evolution with us. You are looking radiant. Great advice by Gaby here too that we can all use for ourselves. Great podcast❤
I agree, she’s stunning! And thank you 🥰🥰
Having known many eccentric characters in my lifetime, I feel like many of them work in opposition to an element of their life.
So glad you got insight from her lovely style journey!
I have a similar color season story as well - I had always been put into dark winter or autumn color seasons because I have dark hair, dark eyes and darker skin like some many WOC. But I realized I am a summer season, and since then, it’s been a game-changer for my style.
i love this exploration. what would be even more amazing would be a few example pictures as she told her story
You can see some of her images in my facebook group, but I don’t want ppl to feel like they have to commit to images publicly to be on the podcast.
I had the same experience with wearing costumes!
Amazing conversation, quite thought provoking to be honest. Thanks to Makhosi to share her wisdom with us! Can't wait for the next episode - and you look so gorgeous in this outfit, Gabrielle ❤
Yes, I'm so grateful she came on to share, and helped me start this segment on a high note! And thank you!!
Love this interview, and the concept of the style files, I relate to so many of the steps in your style journey Makhosi. Thank you for sharing and adding your voice and perspective to the personal style conversation
INFJ (I'd say), so Mrs Makhosi's translations make so much sense...
Omg spot on!
I didnt hear her say viscose, but i love linen viscose blends or cotton viscose.
Also very very lightweight fabrics like ramie, Indian block print cotton which is so soft drapey and light.
Great suggestions!
Yes, keep exploring it!
This is very illuminating.. I can relate. 👍🏻❤️
So glad you liked it!
Thank you, ladies! This conversation was super inspiring and informative. I got tons of ideas how to try and move forward in my fashion choices. ❤
So happy to hear this!
Who knew getting a new wardrobe could go this deep😂
I think 'Polished Aphrodite' from the truth is beauty website could maybe be a nice inspiration for you.
I plan to do more of these soon!
I really enjoyed this. I can relate to the guest’s experience so I was interested in what she had to say. Great video!
Awesome! Thank you!
Loved the video. Loving and insightful. You both look so great! Thank you 💜
Loved this style journey interview, very interesting!
🤗 happy to hear this!
This was wonderful! Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Such a fun video! Three things:
55:40 I so relate when Makhosi said she was resonating with "how I want to see myself vs how I actually am."
The Soft Summer, Soft Dramatic Ethereal Goddess is beautiful on you! And where would a 🧜♀️ mermaid want to live? ✨️ Florida 😊
Yes I think we can all relate to that feeling, and it's a really great thing to examine when style building!
Same. I think it is sometimes difficult to see ourselves ‘correctly’, especially when there are a lot of outside influences and opinions.
Soft colors can be warm or cool 👍🏻 autumn family is also muted
This was so much fun to watch. Now here I am wondering if I’m a summer instead of a winter 😅
What a fun new series! How do we sign up!?
There is a google form to fill out here: forms.gle/4tARr1UV2dRRMzgD7
I'm working through the current applicants, so if you don't hear back asap, just be patient👍👍
This was very interesting. I enjoyed it, thank you. Is there a Light Summer Ultimate Guide on your website?
Thank you! Light Summer is coming next! But i don't have an exact date yet.
@@Gabriellearrudadesign Great, thank you.
This is so illuminating! As a white woman, I always wondered how/if Kibbe applied to BIPOC. It seems it must add an additional challenge.
Yeah, kibbe didn't consider anyone outside of thin central European women lol
I am 5"2' and I'm pretty sure I have "length". I have a very long neck. I think that has something to do with it. My point being, I'm not sure if you can say a height cut off for any type.
Makhosi has very symmetrical features in this video. Seems there is an element of classic in her blend?
She discusses this 👍🏻😉
When I had my first Color analysis done it was from an older lady who offered a 1 time class at the local Adult Ed school.
Im having trouble interpreting summer ethereal mermaid into legit cold weather clothes, help!!!
I like it, too. It’s a different approach. I learned a lot about myself practicing it. The guest seems like T1s2. What do you think?
Whoops, correction, I meant a T2s1! Like Jenny.
Can we get a link to her Insta or UA-cam or places where we can see what she’s talking about 😊
At this time I don't have permission to share that. But if you're part of my facebook group she has a couple posts there that show her style journey beautifully
What’s the answer to what does a goddess wear to run errands?
Well for Makhosi that's her next style extension that she will be exploring. I would suggest for a person who wanted to know "what a goddess would wear" to start with defining what amounts of "goddess-ness" you need in an outfit and integrating details, softer fabrics, and details like bell sleeves, diagonal hems, with more casual pieces. A pair of leggings in a soft muted tone with a draped diagonal hem or ruched top with some ethereal jewelry right be the perfect fit. But there's no "one outfit" fits all.
I think you look alike a bit. Similar mouth and eyes. :)
You have a kid 😊
Yes a 6 year old ❤️❤️
Maybe they all knew it was meant to fail, and this was actually a racket for a dude to make a shit ton of cash and a bunch of rich people to abandon their lives and start new lives.
