  • There are tons of DIY shelf mods and rear storage solutions for the FJ Cruiser. Here's a look at mine, inspired by an FJ Cruiser Forum thread, but with a slight modification.

    I have been looking for something similar to this to do with my FJ. And like you I want something that is not permanent. But the price of those bins is ridiculous so I'll look for another idea for the drawers

      Let me know if you find anything that would work. These bins happen to be just the right size. Of course you can always make your own too.

    Looks good and very practical. Noticed the screws of the piano hinge going in the plywood the way they are. Would be scared to use that technique as plywood has no strength when putting screws in that way. Just wondering if they(screws) held up? Thank you for your time Mr.

      I've had this for about a year, and yes, the screws have held up. I haven't removed the platform, aside from filming for this video, so that's one other reason why they are holding up, but it feels pretty secure to me.

    Easy enough to make pine boxes with butt joints and right angle brackets on the inside. Could then do the carpet around the outside of each box to not scratch the wheel wells. I think the wood will slide easy enough on that carpet you/he has in the back. FJ emblem on the carpet tells me it’s OEM?, (mine came with the rubber insert in back, but would like the carpet better myself, as you said stuff doesn’t slide around so easily.
    Wish I had a better look at that support beam you had as the center support. I see it has a “foot” on the bottom and carpet there as well as going upward, but question,... does the top have of the support beam have carpet also where it contacts the underside of the cross piece that becomes the new floor ? (Great idea on the 3 gal.water bottles,.. they take up so much real estate in back when camping, that’s perrrrfect).
    Oh and other ?,... do you have a vid on the cargo nets you used on the back door. Seems that have some trim piece on the bottom and sides of each one, so stuff doesn’t pop out there. ?
    P.S.,... just realized, if I buy the bins,.. they can fit inside each other when out of the vehicle, as I have very limited garage/storage space, that that alone would probably make it worth it for me. And with the support shelf folding in half,... perfecto !!
    Still would like to know about the top of the support beam and also where’d you get the piano hinge? ( I know they are expensive but would be worth it. :-)

      -You can find piano hinges at home depot for relatively cheap. Just something to note, once I covered the platform with carpet, it doesn't fold completely closed, like it would without a carpet covering.
      -The cargo nets are an OEM part (number PT912-35070) that you can buy online, or from a Toyota dealer. There is plastic trim on bottom to keep the bottom of the net closed.
      -The bins do stack easily within each other for easy storage if desired.
      -The top of the support beam has a right-angle bracket on either side of the vertical wood piece running along the edge of the top. This piece supports the piano hinge so the platform doesn't fold into itself with a load on top.

    The plywood platform its a great space saving solution. However, the price on those bins is too expensive in my view. Im pretty there's cheaper options for bins out there.

      Yes, you can get cheaper bins for sure, but I haven't seen anything readily available with the right dimensions. Steep, but not as expensive as a permanent drawer system like the Tuffy for almost 1k.

    There are other options for drawers out there much more affordable. But thanks for the build

    • @LiL13izzy7
      @LiL13izzy7  4 роки тому +3

      The carpet covers the wood and also prevents things from jostling around in the trunk. It was cheap and simple enough. If I didn't have the carpet I probably would have put the OEM rubber trunk mat on top.
