I took out the rear seats in my 2008 FJ and installed a bed a few months ago, best RV ever! Wanting a way to open the rear window and lock/ unlock the door the door from the bed in the middle of the night, etc your video was invaluable to me. Thanks for putting it together so nicely with all relevant information, could not have done it without you
I had to strip the door lock wires a little to get the T-Taps to make secure connections, but other than that, everything else worked perfectly. Thanks!
Just did it. Thank you for the detailed explanation. After gathering the required parts and tools it only took me 20 minutes! Pretty cool mod, way better than the mechanical one I had seen elsewhere when the only thing you could open was the door from the inside.
Did the mod this weekend. Nice and easy, thanks for the idea and the instructions. Used a 3/4" drill bit and the switch you linked fit snug and fine. I have a 2011 and it doesn't control the front doors, just the rear. Would be great if it could control the fronts too, but simply having the ability to open the rear glass without a key is extremely beneficial for less than $20 and a little bit of time.
Very informative video. Thank you. I think I will run the switch wires up to the front dash board console. If I have to open the main rear door to open the window I don’t need the window open.
@@LiL13izzy7 OK, so I did a modified version of your window button. I installed a button on the main console under the head unit. I used this button from Ebay. Thank you again for the original video on how to do this.
Thanks alot for such an informative DIY, FUN FACT: tap into the Green and Black wires to lock door + unlock the window only with a simple momentary push switch.
Even more useful than the A Trac Hack. Having to walk with a cane, with my dog on leash to the driveway, the FJ door will sometimes lock itself again, or I will have to hit the unlock button twice on the key remote when the window is tilted open, to get it unlocked. This Hack is my project for this week, thank you! And my GSD thanks you!
great video man. After watching this last week I decided to go ahead and give it a shot today on my FJ 2007. I did it with one variation. I ran the switch up onto the center console.I put the switch next to the mirror controllers on the left side console.Took a couple hours had to run the wires down under the trim and through the boot/wire cover from the door to the main cabin. Having the switch up with all the other switches in the main cabin just seemed to be a little more useful for me. Now I can unlock the window or lock and unlock the back door from the driver's seat. Awesome video man thanks for the idea.
We must be on the same level, I saw this mod last week and was excited about it. Amazon should be delivering my switches today and I can't wait to do this mod myself. I "may" have something really cool for that rear door in addition to this in the near future, when I take it apart I'll see how the structure is designed to see if it will work. Thanks for the video! Oh by the way, the FJ is one of those vehicles you never really stop modifying :-)
We are definitely on the same level, because I think I got that very same thing for the rear door (stay tuned). I just thought it'd be helpful to separate the window mod into its own video since it does require a little bit of explanation. Can't wait to see yours!
Awesome job! I have a 2007 in the body shop getting the roof channels resealed (from leaking) under the roof rack! a common problem with FJs unfortunately!! I have several modifications ready to install that will blow you guy's minds in store for my code name (BLUE THUNDER) Fj Cruiser, so stay tuned. I will also be adding this rear window mod Thank's to you brother!! take care & God Bless!!!
I have a 2007 FJ and I didn’t like that it locked all the doors when I opened the window. Pretty annoying. I wired my switch directly to the solenoid so it only opens the window (bypassing the computer logic that detects a long key turn to the right). Note: a beefy diode is required if you go this route and want to retain the original functionality. Otherwise you need to cut the power wire to the solenoid so you don’t backfeed the signal generator.
Do anyone knows a type of connectors which are disconnected in this video around time 8:12? I would replace one of them to add anotherone rather there then using these cutting wires connectors. Maybe it could be dismantle with a little care but I'm not sure.
@@LiL13izzy7 yea, installed it this summer. All of the complaints about it were that you won't use it enough to make it worth it. I've used it well over 50 times in 3 months. Thank you for a great tutorial video on this great mod. Maybe it’s just my FJ, but I can’t unlock the rear door from the key in the outside, the lock cylinder only turns in the locking position. I always found it odd that I had to either use the fob or the driver side lock.
@@LiL13izzy7 so far it’s just been that others’ lock cylinders were dirty or rusted shut. I’ve tried WD-40 but no luck. Maybe I’ll give some penetrating oil a try.
But if I have to open the back door to open the window why open the window? I already have access to the trunk. Thank you again for showing how to wire that switch. I completely agree that should have been factory installed.
You don't have to open the back door to open up the window (you can simply turn and hold the key to the right in the trunk's key-hole for a few seconds to unlatch it). This mod would be useful for someone who spends time in the trunk (like sleeping in the back while camping), and would like to crack the window open from the inside, or to exit the vehicle without having to climb out the front seats.
Considering your exit while in the trunk example… I guess someone pops the window open using your switch and then what? Climbs out the window? Reaches impossibly far down for the handle to open the trunk?
@@mrchrishill Nope. The window mod was done in conjunction with an internal door release mod: ua-cam.com/video/sSnkhgAPwZ4/v-deo.html As far as the internal release mod goes, let's just say you want to exit the vehicle, you can open the door from the inside, as opposed to having to climb over the console and exit out one of the front doors, or in your example, open the window and reach an impossible distance to the outside door handle.
Just tired this mod unfortunately it didn’t work for some reasons the switch after hookup didn’t open or close ….. checked the connection seemed good ….. 2010 FJ with a aftermarket remote starter and key fab …. Maybe that’s the reason hmmm
Wow, now this is amazing! Question: is there a specific reason it's installed to the far left and not to the right window lift cap doesn't get in the way?
Personal preference. You can literally pick any spot you want. There is some foam underneath the right side of that cap though, so you'd need to remove that foam or drill through it if you decide to place it on the other side.
It mimics the actions of turning the key in either direction. Turning it one way will lock the door (hold to unlock the window). Turning it the other way will unlock the door. The two rocker positions are like the left and right positions on the door key. I demonstrated this at the 9:52 mark of the video, and further explained at the 12:24 mark.
I have a 2014 FJ, i bought it brand new in December 2014, and recently I'm starting to have problems with the rear view camera, when i put it in reverse (it's manual transmission), it simply goes blank and sometimes blue with some stripes, what do you think about it?
I think your rear view camera is going bad. My mom had a bad camera in her Camry, and the screen would go blue like you mentioned. Replacing the camera did the trick.
The real question is why Toyota never placed this needed function on their FJ Cruisers. It could not be a cost factor, cause they already placed the wiring and latch, why not just add the switch?!
You can choose which side of the switch to wire it on. If you want to put green on 1 and red on 2, you'll rock it one way. Swap sides, and you'll rock it the other direction. Doesn't matter, as you can take your pick.
This is only for the window. The rear door latch mod can be done concurrently, when you have access to that rear door panel. I made a separate video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/sSnkhgAPwZ4/v-deo.html
Awesome video I have done this but I am having an issue. I have it wired correctly and it will unlock the door only. I held the switch to unlock the window or lock the door. Does anyone had this problem? The VooDoo FJ is a 2007

I had this problem at first, due to my confusing the ground wire. Make sure it's the black wire which changes color after the plug in and that it goes to the center terminal on the switch
I mention this at the 7:35 mark. I didn't need to disconnect the battery simply because I disconnected the wiring harness before working. I would always err on the side of caution if I were you and just disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. It's super quick and easy to do so anyway.
It is better to put the control switch near the driver because sometimes one of the children wants to ride in the back and to avoid opening the window and causing him to fall
We don't have children riding in the cargo area, so the likelihood of that is slim to none. This is really meant for a convenient spot for someone to open the window if they are camping out in the back of the FJ. There are many other use cases, but for me personally, I don't see the practicality of mounting a switch in the front. Everybody has a different perspective, but the cool thing is you can route the switch to be anywhere you'd like.
If I were going to all that trouble I would have installed a door latch when it was all apart otherwise I don't see the need to tap into the door lock wire. Great install video otherwise.
This is awesome and I learned a lot. Thank you very much
