- How does a guy who is 6' 5" tall sleep comfortably in the back of a Toyota FJ Cruiser without building an elaborate and expensive sleep platform? I often spend the night in my Toyota FJ Cruiser when I'm on a fly fishing trip or some other adventure. I never wanted to put out the money and effort to build a nice raised platform, but I've found a quick, easy and inexpensive way to go car camping in my FJ.
Included in this video is a bonus tip showing a cheap and easy way to open the rear door from inside. (You FJ Cruiser owners know that Toyota forgot to put a door latch on the inside.)

Awesome! Thank you!
Nice and simple, I've done this many times. Thanks for sharing.
As a fellow 6'5" male I have surprised many people who told me the FJ is too small. I did recently upgrade my setup for touring which requires me (or so I'd like to think) to have a fridge and some storage. I ended up building a double drawer in the back, with the seats removed, that runs from the rear door all the way to the front. In one side, I have a drawer that holds all my gear (cooking, camping, offroad recovery). On the other side, I have a drawer fridge, with an additional storage compartment behind it (because the fridge is not that deep). On top I've put a custom 100mm mattress. What makes this nice is that I don't need to set up anything between driving, camping and sleeping as I can access everything with the bed setup in place. All I have to do when I go to sleep is put the front seats forward, and place a small extension board similar to what you've done on the crate. While not the biggest space, it's cosy and sleeps two people. It's dry, protected, instant setup and pack up, simple, and comfortable.
That sounds like a nice setup.
All of the other solutions I’ve seen are either outrageously expensive, or pretty complex requiring skill and tools. Love this! May still need to remove the front seat to have enough length to get a really great night’s sleep. We’ll see 😊
I've also thought about removing the seat. That would allow me to stay to one side. With this method, I have to lay diagonally, but I've never felt too cramped to sleep well. The Thule roof box definitely plays a role, too. Without that, I'd be crowded by my gear all night.
Smart, simple and easy idea 💡
Thanks!
Many thanks! Two of the minor issues I have had with my FJ are solved.
Awesome! Glad I could help.
I like your style! And keeps the weight low too.
Yes, it does. Thanks!
Thanks, Jim!. I just got my fj Cruiser, and since I'm only 5'6"... this will be a no-brainer. 😂😂
Yeah, that'll work. Enjoy the FJ!
Perfect 👌 👍
Yes, and it was fun figuring out a way to take minimalist down another notch or two.
I love a good cheap solution to, but You should really snag that 3D printed button from Dallas Sterling in the FJ cruiser forums to open the FJ's rear door.
I didn't have good luck with that.
Awesome work mate. I'm a shortie, so no issues about fitting in lengthwise. I've got drawers in the rear... so may have to increase height around the rear seat area. Good to see there's other FJing fly fisherman around. Subbed. And I'll check out your other vids. Love the scenery on your side of the world!! Beautiful. Cheers 🍻🎣🎣 .... And I'll definitely use your hack for the rear door. Thanks!
Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you found the PFO channel. It's awesome to know how many like-minded people there are all over the world. Tight lines and happy trails to you!
I like it!
Thanks!
This was awesome thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dead simple. And cheap too
Very much so. Thanks for watching!
Sorry bro,,i saw your title and your video pic and i was like....no!...😂
It's actually pretty comfortable.
I’m 6-4 so good to know it can be done. I just need to take out my custom drawer/fridge slide to make it work. My 4”backpacking mattress pad and mummy bag should work. I’m a fly fisher (Tenkara) as well and want a simple method to sleep instead of pitching a tent.
I've also used my Sea to Summit 3" self inflating pad in the FJ, particularly on longer trips when space is more of an issue. The mummy profile fits better than the rectangular foam shown here.
Hi. great solution! What traction boards are those?
Here is a link. They were unavailable when I published the video, so I didn't originally include a link. It looks like they are back in stock. Any of the 42" long models would probably fit, but these are identical to the ones in the video.
