You got a BMW turbo already🤣
Scotty doesn't buy new .lol let em age a bit then buy
Im thinking grand national Buick
Spank Themonkey fr. This Acura Scotty recommending is terrible unless it’s had a full rebuild. Turbo is a pain to replace on this vehicle. A decent one runs for $7500-$9k. The ones you see on Craigslist OfferUp etc are beaters falling apart for $2500 to $6k. 🤦🏻♂️

Hi Scotty,
Why’s the check engine light on?
That doesn't fit his narrative of supreme Japanese reliability, so he excluded it from the video. On a Mercedes or BMW, though, he'd be happy to plug his "fancy scan tool" in and rip it apart for having 20 redundant codes
@@standyourground9973idk why he didn't talk about the light but its probably why the owner brought it to scotty to fix. As for mercedes and bmws they are notorious for falling apart early on and costing a fortune to fix
He did say that it was in for an oil change (I think, I'm not going back and rewatching it). I'm not familiar with Honda/Acura icons, but some of the change oil lights are really really close to check engine lights (my wife's car fooled her the first time she needed a change).
@@standyourground9973 respect your profile man
Peter Hemingway that is absolutely a check engine light, not a service engine soon/oil change light

"Let's see how that turbo kicks in!"

This is a 2.0l turbo for people who do not need BMW M series....
LMAO.... There’s been a few MDX’s that tried to race me and they both got smoked.... 290 horsepower is not enough for these SUVs. That V6 should be cranking out 300+ horsepower and These cars also have hella outdated interiors
@Cameron Peralta if you’re trying to race soccer mom MDX’s everytime your driving then you need to grow up kid.

@finn808 my F-150 does it in 6 seconds lol
2:23 I keep wondering how much of this reputation for “unreliability” on GDI/Turbo small engines is just a function of PISS POOR MAINTENANCE by the owners (or leaser’s) as opposed to truly bad engineering by the manufacturer. Coupled with literally driving them like they’re stolen.
Seriously now, if I see someone a mile ahead of me driving like an absolute looney bird, IF I can actually catch up with him it seems like they’re always driving a late model Honda, Nissan, something with the deadly combo of GDI, tiny turbo 4-banger, and CVT transmission; and they’re driving it like they literally *want* it to catch fire. Is it possible these cars are far more mechanically sound than we give them credit for, & are just being driven like F1 cars (and poorly maintained) by ignorant, negligent operators?
Bruce Morris This 💯 you see a ton of high mileage turbocharged cars that were well cared for and understood the maintenance.
You're not wrong, but its certainly STILL unreliable stuff. I dont blame the people for not maintaining their Hondas as well as Honda wants them to. They expect you to use the highest grade of fuel possible, use THEIR oil designed specifically for THEIR car (which costs like 100 dollars each change) and also expect you to come to the dealership every 10k miles and shell out 200-300 bucks just for a guy to look at your car. These engines were designed with all this in mind and want the customer to do all this in order for the engine to run like its supposed to. Its just near impossible, even for people who actually care about their cars. It's usually not bad engineering, but just plain science. You put all this pressure and stress onto a itty bitty 1.5 liter engine made for cars half the size Honda is putting them in, 100k cannot be seen without at least a good bit of engine wear, thats just how it goes. You also have to literally push the engine to the max in order to even merge onto the highway at a decent speed. I dont necessarily blame Honda and other companies for these engines being unreliable, but its bound to happen if you do all that to a little engine. On top of all that, the newer Hondas are very sensitive to abuse.
@@aytugdemir1323 Push the engine to the max?? Have you actually driven one, I have a 2018 Accord with the 1.5 and that thing flyes when you touch the accelerator and is not even at 3,000 rpms.
@@MrGardoPR I'm talking about the CRV, not the Accord. But I think the Accord would be very slow too.

WHAAAAT SCOTTY FINALLY LIKES TURBOS. 🤯
As long as he doesnt pull out his Fancy Scan Tool
lol
Of course he likes turbos. Do you know how much mechanics make from those things?
He does like the new Honda Civic Type R
I have 2008 RDX. I bought it 2 year old and I drive it for 12 years. 370K on it. Love it in general. All Pros are in the video. Cons are: bad on gas, air conditioner compressor got changed 3 times, turbo gasket gave me a huge problem once. But I put regular in it all the time before and after and it's fine. Also multiple interior "leather" parts needed to be changed or repaired. Noone can figure out the reason of battery drain for years, even though I have bluetooth disconnected. Voice recognition is a joke. Audio system makes some buzzy sound. Too hard to figure out some street names on the Navi.
On the turbo how did you know it was just the gasket and not the turbo itself? Did you get the dreaded P2263 error code for boost system performance? I've read a lot about it, but nobody who's been able to fix it, even after replacing the turbo I've heard it's come back.
Im going through the same😢

First off, THAT RDX NEEDS FULL SYNTHETIC 5W30 ENGINE OIL. Anyways, I’d LOVE to see any other 14 year old car from any manufacturer that is turbocharged that hasn’t had anything but scheduled maintenance until 150k miles. You won’t find one. With Honda’s and Acura’s, Toyota and Lexus too, just change the oil and filter, air filters, tranny fluid and other fluids, spark plugs, tires and brakes and you are good to go 200k trouble free miles. I own a 2006 Civic Si Sedan 6MT with 243k miles, a 2008 Acura TSX 6MT with 205k miles, and my daily driver a 2012 Acura TSX that just hit 169k miles. I’ve done nothing but scheduled maintenance. NEVER has even the CEL light come on in any of my three cars. They consume NO oil. They all still run like the day I bought them new. The ONLY major issue I had was with my 2012. The ballast for the passenger side HID Xenon headlight went bad. The Acura dealer replaced it for $278 including tax and shop fees. Also, each of these cars get 7,500 mile oil change services with 5W30 synthetic blend oil. My 2012 calls for 0W20 but it needs the 30 weight the way I drive these cars. Lol.
20mpg, my BMW has 85,000 miles and does 30/50mpg nothing major replaced yet. For the amount you're paying in fuel (double) I could save that money and buy another car with it. If my turbo needs replacing or transmission remanufacturing at 100,000 miles I will still have saved due to the mpg. Here fuel is super expensive, we spend about £80 to fill a tank. Japanese cars aren't perfect like everyone believes either, all cars can have problems for example - I remember my Honda Accord's engine completely cutting out at 50mph and losing power steering! Found a problem with the ignition barrel - point being; you could play it safe and buy a dull, uninspiring, gas guzzling car and it may still go wrong. There's still an element of luck no matter how well engineered they're supposed to be. I have owned both brands and I know which I will buy as my next car...

Scotty Kilmer Savage
Over the past several months I have learned when Scotty says "I got one" does "not" mean he "bought" one... LOL
Just buy a Chrysler for fun. You can afford it
Bought my 2007 RDX back in 2009 with about 23k miles. Beautiful car in and out. Now it’s at 201k miles. No major issues just regular oil changes and schedule maintenance and battery replaced. I agree with all Scotty has said. However….recently having issues with engine misfire. Lights on dash lighting up like Christmas lol. Hoping to get it fixed. With all things considered this car is pretty solid and reliable the last 14 years.
Scotty can u make a vid explaining the difference between turbocharged, supercharged and just turbo?
There is no difference...a turbo and super charger are both turbine driven compressors. A turbo is more efficient because it is driven by exhaust gasses...so power from waste gas. A super charger is belt driven...so it is parasitic, like AC. Which is better...It depends on who you ask.
Mike Foehr Positive Displacement superchargers ( Roots, Twin screw) are Not turbine driven , Centrifugal superchargers have an impeller which creates inlet suction !
From an efficiency standpoint, the turbocharger has an advantage. It takes wasted exhaust and turns it into something useful. Meanwhile, a supercharger won't do this and acts more like a naturally aspirated engine.
However, with a turbocharger comes lag. A supercharger doesn't rely on exhaust gas and power comes immediately. Superchargers can more easily be tuned to provide linear boost across the rpm range as well. Other downsides to a turbocharger include a lubrication requirement. A turbo requires engine oil lubrication, which is another demand on the engine. And as the turbo creates more heat, the oil will degrade quicker. For the record, some superchargers require engine oil lubrication as well, but it will never reach the more extreme temperatures that a turbo will.
I ll take a supercharged car over a turbo charged to my like.
Thank you all. Awesome explanations
Well the best turbo charge car is the Volvo XC70 that engine was an ancestor to Volvo flygmotor ( aircraft engine 😈)
Check your information. That is incorrect. Volvo xc70 was actually a very poor spec car and very unreliable
Lol ummm are you having amnesia or forgetting the rest of the car was notorious for electrical issues etc. I know OLD Volvo’s are tanks but modern ones idk about that. So all it is in an acestor lol. I’m an naturally aspirated engine kind of guy but if I was forced on a turbo I’d take the Acura over the Volvo 5 days out the week lol . I drink on the weekends 😂💀 i wouldn’t have an 8yr old Volvo and this Acura is 14years old with awd. That’s all I have to say as far as observations😂

I shouldn't say most people, but a lot of people that have a turbo overuse it and are not very knowledgeable about automotive equipment and don't or won't properly maintain it. Acuras like Lexus will be more expensive when they do break, but whatever floats your boat. I'll take a regular Honda or Toyota and bank the difference. I'm old also lol
You will never convince me to buy a turbo driven car..ever. 105k miles does not impress.

I bought a 2008 a few years ago (it has manual spot and flappy paddles) with 160,000 miles. It is a well known thing that turbos wear out, so I sent it to Blouch Performance Turbo. I had them upgrade it during the rebuild. they upgraded the the exhaust side for better flow and the compressor side with a 19T. After tuning instead of the 13 pounds of factory, it now makes 26 pounds. YeeHaw!

:/
K swap the bastard 😝. My niece has one and it's a great little car. I think the CR-V that had an issue was the 2016 or 2017. I maybe wrong in the year.
2020 should be good. They fixed the
Oil dilution problem
Hey scotty just an fyi I loved the video except when you said the rdx was too old to manual shift...check again that model comes with paddle shift in auto mode as well as a sport mode with manual paddle shift. Other than that good video and a fantastic suv.
I had a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT (5cyl Turbo). It had 185,000 miles on it when I sold it. It ran great until I just stopped taking care of it. I had a Passat 1.8t that had 110,000 miles on it when I sold it and it ran great. You just have to do regular oil changes. Hopefully the direct injection cars will improve.
Facts
My '09 RDX has been the best car I've owned. In 195k miles it's only needed a repair to the nav system (dvd drive, which I diy'd for about $50) and a new center armrest leather cover (diy for about $20). I am diligent about maintenance (as was the 1st owner).
The only somewhat common issue is a turbo underboost code. Dealers will want to replace the entire turbo (iirc, normally around $4k), but it's normally just a little worn piece in the turbo actuator linkage, and cheap repair options are available. That said, at nearly 200k, my actuator linkage is still tight (checked it when I recently did my plugs).
Other than that, they're super solid. Not a sports car (I've got an s2000 for that), but quick enough and they corner very well. The SH-AWD is one of the best AWD systems, and makes it a beast in the snow (and fun to toss into corners).
Hey man I got an 07 rdx when I put it in boost the check emission system signal shows up, than SH-AWD light, There is a intake that was put on when I got it from the dealer not sure if it's related, could you help me out? Runs great just those signals
@@bigguwop9654 Check for codes.
I bet you'll find an underboost code (like I mentioned above).
Probably nothing to do with the intake, but they rarely do much good. CPE was the only model that looked to provide gains, but you really need a tune (or Hondata reflash) to get any benefit. Many aftermarket intakes are trash, and just suck in hot air......
I'm not at 210k, and still going strong!
u know whats even better dan a turbocharger....a SUPERCHARGER dammmm or both
Looks IDENTICAL to my 11’ RDX that I just had to get rid of, such a fun car 😔
Hi Scotty, just wanted to say I always look forward to watching videos like these to further improve my knowledge with automobiles. Thank you for what you do, and keep doing your thing, we all appreciate it!
Gee, you bought the Supra and an MX-5 and you’re now buying another? Scotty, you’re a one percenter! We lost another one, guys 🙁
My 2019 cx-5 awd just got 23mpg towing a filled 7' Fruehauf Car-go trailer across the Oregon coast range. Regularly getting 28mpg combined. No turbo necessary. 6 speed auto tranny performs flawlessly across all driving and towing conditions.
@Jack njones I towed the load across the Oregon coast range,, she didn't miss a beat. I would prefer the diesel but this is great for the price.
Mr. Scotty ,how come car manufacturers dont go back to making 1960 car models . They can put those shitty motors and transmissions. I am sure more people would buy car models like the Chevy ll, 1960s ford mustang's, and 1965 buick grand sport. Why dont they do that .I figure if anyone would know and that person is you .
Scotty. I have one of these 2010. Nice car, but has one problem. When I start it up after sitting overnight the engine rattles for a second or two. It has fresh oil, synthetic etc. If you rev the motor up it tends to have that rattle at high rpm. Some say the variable timing module may be dirty. any ideas. Love you videos. Thanks Randy
I believe that’s exactly what it is. My accord did the same thing. It was my VTC actuator that needed replaced.
I polished up my 18 yr old Mazda 5 headlight covers in less than 1 hr - both sides. sandpaper (3 diff types) and clearcoat - $28 and they look like NEW - don't waste your money - look at youtube vids watch a few diff ones - then go do it. Easy Peasy. dont waste your money.
apparently Scotty does NOT read Consumer Reports frequency of repair data.... Engine and cooling - much worse than average for 2007...The first year of this model not very good
Scotty, what do you think about getting a 2010 mercury Milan 2.5l 4 cylinder with 112,000 miles?
"BUICK PARK AVENUE ULTRA"
I think that was supercharged. At least the one that Hoovie had
It is supercharged and I have one. They are a nice drive and very reliable.
@Ming Yang still 'blown tho
@@danielacuna5997 Is that one still a V6 or does it have a V8?
@Ming Yang I don't think GM makes Buick, I'm pretty sure Buick is Chrysler.
Hey Scotty do you think Acura ZDX is reliable?
I own it that car ! I absolutely love it. Mine is babied! Excellent choice Scotty!!!
is that a 2 liter car?
fidel catsro it’s has a 2.3 litter
2007 Acura RDX turbo with blown head gasket, 156,000miles. Is this fixable?
Some guy with cat pillows keeps telling me - "Turbo BAD! Very BAD!"
Now I'm so confused. 🤔
certain turbo bad. lol
What happened to "and the air is still blowing cold"
@3:20
@@woohunter1 your right 😆
I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with over 206,000 miles and I drive it like a TrackHawk.
Scotty if I keep counts of how many vehicles you said you're buying it would be in 100s 🤣
I have only purchased 2 brand new cars from Honda ever. I have always been overwhelmed with their tech. They might build great engines including the "earth dreams engine". I have never owed a reliable Honda. Perhaps that is harsh. My 2017 CRV has been incredibly fuel efficient. I love the engine! I baby it! I think Honda knows how to build a great CVT transmission as well. My electronics are so wacky. My Honda makes me feel like I am driving a VW.
You can’t shift it manually because it’s to old (doesn’t notice the paddle shifters on the steering wheel)
100k isnt long term , double that and now how does it run
Im curious about it too!!!! Has to be 200k miles.
People are so damn stupid. He said he doesn't like turbos with GDI.
Notice the engine management light is on, why?
Wait I have a 2007 with 99k miles and be paddle shifting sport mode. Not using automatic
Was that flat bed truck there to pick up one of your cars? Joking, now picture an animal with it's mouth open in the left top corner.
I'm not buying any vehicle with a four cylinder. 😂 Or a six for that matter, V8S ONLY!
@Jack njones Not with my V8s. 💪
@Jack njones Nope I upgrade everything, back to font, inside and outside. 👌
@Jack njones Lol whatever dude, none my vehicles have any problems of any kind. I'm not going to argue about it.
i just bought one of those!!! it’s so great. i got it because i’m trying to preserve my 2012 Volkswagen Beetle with really low miles. My new-to-me Acura RDX turbo sh-awd has 216,000 miles on it now but it runs perfect because the previous owners drove mostly highway miles & maintained it well! such a good buy
Does the Acura RDX 4 cycl require top tier gasoline? Thanks for this excellent information.
Yes bro, it’s a Acura not a Honda
I got around 30 mpg highway and 24 city on my 2009 ford everest manual, pretty good milage for me
Nothing drives better than a brand new Mercedes-Benz but I'll never buy one lol are the Lexus rx made in Canada any good since they're made in N America?
@N0RT2G0RD4U the only thing is the rx l made in Japan is a little longer and kinda goofy looking lol
