just curious.
VERY INTERESTING INTERVIEW
Rich Costey should be the mixer!! Best low end and most tasteful use of time based fx.
Wait.....i just noticed there is a second channel....I'm not sure why, but subscribed
No matter how legendary your band is, everyone is humbled by the car test
Real producers know
The final boss 😭
And Fear inoculum stomps in my car !!

@@3clixtriplefuckingsixDude, anyone who’s ever spent any time in a studio knows that. Doesn’t matter if you’re a “real producer”, whatever that means
Seeing Maynard enjoy talking about Tool is surreal
Maynard, one of the most guarded artists I’ve known in 33 years of live music, is this enjoyment?
"It's a fight to the death every fucking time (to get my vocals at precisely a level where they both can and cannot be heard)." Maynard Keenan
lmao
As a TOOL fan that is so true. Didn't even realize it until you pointed it out.
I have never seen Maynard so relaxed, jovial, and personable before. It's nice to see him let down his guard and allow his REAL personality to shine through. And there's only one reason for that… Rick Beato. Rick, your interview style and the respect you command with icons like Maynard speaks for itself. Thank you for what you do. 🙏🏻
he's also cool with joe rogan too
He’s gettin old that’s why
Not true. He just enjoy talking to Rick because Rick understands music. Same as Joe Rogan understands good conversation. @@tannerwest6823
You should look up the documentary that he made about trying to start a vineyard in Arizona.
@@the_real_ch3 I will. Thank you for letting me know about it.
Maynard has chosen to be affable during this interview. I love him like this.
It helps that Rick is nice and same generation
@@Lebowski333couple guys relaxed talking shop and shooting the breeze.
yeah you can tell when Maynard has any respect for the interviewer
He’s had an actual real job for a few years now (owning a winery). Probably has been good for his social skills.
My first thought as well hah, I love the guy's music but he's notorious for being a dick to fans/interviewers, which I don't really care about, just funny in comparison to Jusin/Danny who are really sweet from everything I've heard.
I absolutely love this interview. MJK is not the easiest person to interview so to see him relaxed, engaged, humorous and not dodging questions is awesome. Good man 👏👏👏
Who refers to Maynard as MJK? That's so weird to look at.
He's a dork.
@@kate-pure I don't mean it as anything other than what it means. it's just on observation/ Opinion.
Weird too knowing he's friends with Rogan and yet those interviews seem somewhat forced.
@@jaystat6545 I don’t like those interviews either. This is just two guys who know their shit talking and it’s natural and easy.
TOOL = 1 year to make an album, 15-20 years to mix it.
And it's worth the wait, every single time IMO.
That’s why fear inoculum is so perfectly mixed
@@RevShifty not for similarly sounding songs... not at all 🤦♂
Also, JOHN 8:44 ... JOHN 2:22 🤷♂

The New Album sucks ass though... like not one good song to redeem it.. The new album is so bad it made me think twice about Aenima and Lateralus

I've listened to them 100s if not 1000s of times a piece, Aenima is one of the best Albums ever recorded, up there with Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii... The new tool album sounds like rough bsides and stuff they thought wasn't good enough to make it on to previous albums re worked.. It is akin to the new Indiana Jones movies,.. i'll just ignore the existence lol.
The relative quietness of Maynard’s voice in the mix often has me listening more carefully. I’m glad I tuned in for this, thank you!
Yeah, I always imagined him fighting with the other guys to have the vocals mixed down even quieter.
This has been the draw for me with Tool. The sometimes quiet in the midst of the organized chaos. Not many bands use quiet as musical notes like Tool.
I had no idea vocals can seem sharp if they’re louder than the rest
I didn't even realize this until someone pointed it out. There was always something different with his singing for TOOL vs APC vs Puscifer and just realized APC is more vocal forward.
Very grateful to have been in Highschool when they launched. My Highschool/early young adulthood days were spent hanging with friends jamming to TOOL. Loved them all these years.
Same. Opiate still hits as hard today as it ever did IMO.
Same :)
Justin Chancellor was my biggest influence in choosing to pick up bass!
Rick gets the coolest interviews , the guest seem to really open up around him.
I can’t speak for Maynard, but my favorite mixing tool is the Sunbeam Beatermix. Lightweight, easy to clean, and makes perfect pancake batter every time.
Shut it
Wow you’re so funny. I bet you hope James Maynard will read this and smile, maybe even chuckle to himself. Obviously, you’re an extremely smart and interesting person. Wow
@@pronounshismajesty3542 I’m really not that interesting

It's crazy to think that tool was so elusive when it came to interviews. Now that they're older, they're handed them out like candy as long as they're friends.
Its true. My uncle had this old cheezy Tool documentary from the late 90s and it went so heavy into insisting how cool and mysterious they were. How we didnt know much about them because they wouldnt do interviews.
Maynard is another gem we have and I hope he remains around forever. We lost so many and his bands and music keep me going. Rock on Maynard and keep the wine flowing.
Oh god help you

@@elrondhubbard7059 I believe in big foot too. 🤷🏻♂️😆
I don't know why people are surprised by Maynard's character here. He's clearly IN his element, and is being interviewed by a well respected, well spoken peer who is having a conversation with him. This isn't a run of the mill interview with the same "how do you guys write a song" generic questions.
I've noticed that Maynard is himself in interviews when the person he speaks with is just genuine with him and isn't acting like a robot just there to get specific answers from him.
Excellent to see this chat between two legends
I never knew that radio stations used compression and that it varied by station. That totally makes sense. It never occurred to me that they might process songs differently for movies too. So many times, I've been walking out during the closing credits and the music playing (even if it's a song I've heard before) sounds phenomenal.
Yeah I read a story a long time ago about how radio station processing is part of what helped nirvana blow up, because the way they were used to compressing music was not configured for their extreme loud soft dynamics and it just made them sound gigantic compared to everyone else on the stations at the time, or something along those lines
Compressors were originally developed, specifically for radio in the 1930s.
It's not a gimmick for radio stations, they have to adhere to power standards and such. There's several things they do to the signal before broadcasting, and compression in modern times is more likely to just be a perceived effect- from what I've gathered it's more like multiband expanders and maximizers. Nowadays, it's probably just a black box processor with all kinds of automated and/or pre-programmed features. As for theaters, your enjoyment is probably due to the effect of just being a theater. Large enclosed rooms with sound design and acoustic treatment is kind of the ideal listening environment, but who knows, maybe that multimillion dollar movie took an already professionally produced hit song and just slapped a compressor on it lol
Look up Orban Optimod. It's a limiter/comp. most radio stations use.
Yeah, music is mastered differently for different mediums.
Experience Tool back in the 90's, and APC in the 2000's.etc.etc. Maynard is still just as ridiculously articulate as he was way back when. Awesome..
Ayyy! What an experience, to be able to interview Maynard James Keenan. Well done, Beato!
Listening to conversations like this, I'm happy I hung onto my old stereo equipment and big arse speakers. Having access to my dad's stereo system as a kid, then being able to build my own and experiment with the sound of album has literally shaped my perception of life and the world around me. It's so easy to forget what music really is listening to a random whatever song on some crappy phone or even the best headphones or car stereo. The music becomes flat and lifeless. Maynard talking about the old amps, sitting around with a left and a right speaker perfectly positioned in a room so you get those sound waves bouncing around just right, that brings back some good memories. Oddly enough, my old equipment is still going strong, while more modern/trendy/convenient equipment such as my phones and digital formats have crapped out on me and had to be replaced. That being said, if I had the money for some of the stuff out I've seen for sale out there...never mind my own house, I would attempt to rattle my neighbor's house!
Nothing better than firing up the amps for 2 channel listening and letting my Klipsch take me away!
15" cerwin vegas. 15" rca sub. 20 year old Sony receiver, close to same age CD player. I don't usually turn it up past 35 but when I do... the neighbors know.
This is such an incresible interview! Everything said is so incredibly important, relevant and honest; thank you for this! A lot of wisdom in this video for sure.
Maynard is truly a person that does his own thing. Listening to him talk with Rick is awesome to see a little behind the curtain.
very fortunate to get this interview!! thank you much for sharing!! 👽
Saw them last week in pa
They were amazing
Sound was unbelievable
They definitely pay attention to every detail
I have several stereo systems. The one I have for jazz, classical and acoustic is the one Tool sounds the best on. That’s how clean their mix is. Freaking awesome!
Never fails to make me feel awe. So personable and clever.
You allways come through with the legends. When I first found your channel several years ago I was just looking for guitar tips and new ideas. I didn't realize what you were doing in and for the music industry scene.
some of the best mixing in the game. especially when the music is complicated, its very important to highlight all the members of tool specifically cause they are all straight up demons with the skill level
Literally demons
I would disagree with their last record. The mixes didn’t struck me as amazing
@Strepite i felt with their last album the only issue was maynards vocals seemed kind of faded in the background at times.
So I can agree with your statement sir 👍
Thank you tool for all the beautiful moments I've had listening to your music.
insightful and well articulated i loved his book
I really enjoyed this little segment. Nice work.
Rick you're on such a roll, you do the best interviews. It's fun how your channel transmogrifies over the years
Awesome interview, respect to Maynard and Tool.
Oh so this is why Tool releases albums so frequently.
Amongst other factors.
Yea-it MUST be so easy to put amazing lyrics & sounds that have never been heard before out of your hat anytime you want😂😂
Ever wrote a song or recorded a track that had millions of people wanting more??? Me neither--can’t be so easy🙄
@@smack9516 there’s no excuse for 13 years between their last 2 albums, especially when they sound practically identical like a volume 1 and volume 2 🤣
Love Tool! I saw you guys at The Ventura Theater in California, early 90s. It was best concert I've ever seen! Still my favorite band.
So awesome he listens to the mix so much he can repeat it live. They are all bands amazing live and almost just exactly like the album. Such a pleasure to hear him live. Super talented.
No Maynard, whatever you think you missed, we wouldn't know. Always sounds great.
A single scream in Fear Inoculum, perhaps? He can still do it. Always felt it shouldve been the climax of Culling Voices.
Maynard is so great!
Rick, you did a great job with this interview!
Such a dreamy voice,-still

When he mentioned Portlandia's small speakers, I couldn't stop laughing, Lol.
Maynard James Keenan, You are the greatest of all time, EVER! ❤️
always love when MJK sits down for a good conversation
Maynard and Danny are 2 guys I'd love to just talk to about anything. They seem so real and grounded for the amazing artists they are. Justin would be cool too. Adam.... man, Adam would probably be cool too, but he seems intense.
Adam comes across as someone who’s done a ton of lsd or mushrooms and loves to talk about it lol not a bad thing at all but yes I see what you mean. But Maynard has always seemed like the most intense in the band. With Justin or Danny being the most chill
Most of us have no idea what music can really sound like. If we listened to our favorite tracks on a $1000+ pair of studio headphones we'd be shocked at how much detail we've never heard.
And never cared about
You'll probably hear things the band wants left out
Imagine turning the radio off and listen to the V8 in your car and never miss anything.
@@disturbed157 probably not because they'd be mixing the album with $10,000 headphones.

Listening to this, man, it really wakes up the audiophile in me. This is what I nerd out on 👌

I'm a fan of both. That's like comparing Pink Floyd to Rush. You can have your own opinions but they're not even close.
@@PhilosufurLOL I love Meshuggah, but I would never say their music is particularly dynamic. Intricate? Absolutely. But it’s peak aggression and volume 98% of the time. Their records are very heavily compressed, to boot. Not many dynamics to be found.

I cannot stop playing pneuma, invincible, and descending on my guitar. It’s just so simple but hypnotizing. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of writing. I’ve come up with about 13 potential songs since that album came out.
The 7/4 time is really cool and the chord shapes aren't crazy, it's the rhythmic complexity that really elevates those songs.

Mutt Lang was the master at understanding that people listen to music typically on crappy equipment or in their car which was also probably crappy. He made music sound good on everything. I think a lot of bands/producers even today try to make music sound how they "want" it to sound and not how it needs to sound to be good on anything from earbuds to bluetooth speakers to big stereos.
Since you brought it up, Dead or Alive "Spin Me Right 'Round" sounds awesome over the airwaves every time I hear it, so use THAT as a reference track
I could listen to Maynard for hours talking about music wine and just life.
If only more musicians admitted they've actually gone deaf after years of touring and stopped turning everything up in the mix we would have so many more balanced and dynamic sounding recordings today.
