I cannot stop playing pneuma, invincible, and descending on my guitar. It’s just so simple but hypnotizing. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of writing. I’ve come up with about 13 potential songs since that album came out.
Mutt Lang was the master at understanding that people listen to music typically on crappy equipment or in their car which was also probably crappy. He made music sound good on everything. I think a lot of bands/producers even today try to make music sound how they "want" it to sound and not how it needs to sound to be good on anything from earbuds to bluetooth speakers to big stereos.
You allways come through with the legends. When I first found your channel several years ago I was just looking for guitar tips and new ideas. I didn't realize what you were doing in and for the music industry scene.
this setting makes a super human look and feel regular. i very much love that people who absolutely excel at any given thing make that thing seem so easy. maynard is entertaining and i appreciate getting these opportunities to hear from him without the persona of the front man being the dominating force. very enjoyable, rick. thumbs up.

Most of us have no idea what music can really sound like. If we listened to our favorite tracks on a $1000+ pair of studio headphones we'd be shocked at how much detail we've never heard.
I don't do cannabis much, but when I do a little to moderate amount and listen to the music, I can hear all the separate layers. Imagine if I did it with $1,000 headphones.

As a musician influenced by these guys, whatever you hear from their albums will always have a positive impact on the way I produce music. They're still amazing in my ears 🙂 If this makes sense.
Thank you soo much Rick for this interview. I believe TOOL is the one band that I've personally experienced multiple times live more than any other in my life. Soo amazing!
Tower records! I remember them. 90s, sometime haha. Saw Danzig behind the store where it was a surprise concert. It was a mix of Danzig and also Misfits (where eagles dare, teenagers, etc). Somebody brought a 12 pack of rolling rock as well. Good times.
He is growing up but he took his time yet still did pretty much everything excellent. It’s like he was given a handbook somewhere on his path “how to live life to infinite fullness “
I never watch, or read, interviews from any Tool band members. I like the mystery of not knowing much about them. They've made the best music in the world to me and I dont ever want a reason to not like them! Why am I here, I don't know.
If only more musicians admitted they've actually gone deaf after years of touring and stopped turning everything up in the mix we would have so many more balanced and dynamic sounding recordings today.
different platforms will alter your mix differently as well. tiktok will add more compression and gain, sometimes ruining your mix, but if tiktok completely destroys your mix, it could mean that your mix is already overcompressed. i find youtube to be much more forgiving. it's not easy doing your own mixing as an artist. there's no ''one mix fits all'' and there are multiple factors that can effect the pitch of your vocal. i'm really glad maynard pointed some of that out. it's nice to know someone of his caliber deals with the same issues.
I Discovered tool in 1995. I’ll never forget going to a friends house for lunch and eating a piece of cherry pie and seeing the video of Sober. I was never the same, on MTV
Tool's studio sound is perfection. What I mean by that is if you go and see them live, IT'S THE EXACT SAME SOUND. When I saw them in 97 during the Aenima tour in a small arena, I could have sworn they were just playing the CD backstage. They sounded EXACTLY the same live as they did on the the CD. It blew my mind how good they sounded. And to this day it is still a testament to how much work they put in in the studio to capture their actual live sound. Which is crazy because their sound is so unreal it must be impossible to pull off live right? Fucking NOPE!
It's very natural and it isn't over produced. And they pan everything in the studio to sound like a live show. When you listen in surround sound, the music hits you from all sides.
I agree. I’ve seen Tool live 6 times and am always blown away by how they can play at their level of technicality so consistently. I’ve taken a few people who never really got into them for whatever reason, who instantly turned into lifelong fans after their shows. They are truly gifted and committed musicians. Hoping I can see them a few more times, if not more.
saw them a week ago and man it did feel like everything i imagined it to be and then some since you could feel it and see it. but the sound was so amazing felt better than studio since you could just feel that guitar. god man i loved it so much but most impressive is how well Maynerd voice has held up over the years.

I love the fact that James does all these same listening things to his mixes that I do. On a flash drive for my car, my stereo, in the studio. I write and record my own music and this is exactly what I do until I've finalized my mix. I have 2 sets of monitors in my little home studio and use both sets for comparisons too. Puscifer is one of the greatest bands I've ever known. Maynard has such a special connection to the earth. A beautiful human. ❤
to the earth? like we don't? c'mon man sheesh
@@TheDennzioshe’s one of those crazy spirit rock people man let her be. The first thing she’d ask you is your zodiac.
Maynard is such a down to earth dude. Aside from being a great artist. I love good music and great wine and just being happy lol he's so relatable
Maynard is a legend and Rick was a perfect interviewer. Great one!
Seen Tool twice. Been a huge fan since 1993. Good interview bud
Haha I used to call going to a Tool show "going to church". They are on their own level.
@@ventarfield7115 So true lol
lucky man, i live in the middle east and i've been a Tool fan since 2001, i've seen them 0 times.
It is like a religious experience.
God, I hate tool fans, but I love tool. Whuduhiduh?
Uau!!! Maynard actually laughs. Rick, you're the best!!!!
Rick you're on such a roll, you do the best interviews. It's fun how your channel transmogrifies over the years
Maynard is my favorite musician. I love everything he does. Too bad I’m in AA because I would love to try his wine. I love this guy but even Maynard can’t push me off the wagon. I learned a lot in 11 minutes though. Awesome
Maynard is the definition of 'The cool uncle' :D i could listen to that man talk for hours.
My two favorite artists moved to Arizona and I couldn't be happier to have them. Maynard and Doug Stanhope.
Has Doug done anything of note in 20 years? He’s gone full tilt woke liberal and it’s tough to listen to him anymore.
@@stevefromyellowstone7911then don’t. You can bet he doesn’t give a shit. 🙄
Yeah..I’m sure they love these blue staters rolling in and “fixing all their problems”.
Rick seems to have such a calming influence on everybody he sits down with, wish other interviewers would watch a few of his videos before they go into the usual ask a question answer it themselves approach most seem to take 🙏
very fortunate to get this interview!! thank you much for sharing!! 👽
Tool record extremely well. My ears have absolutely no complaints. ❤
Definitely don’t get cheated on any of their tunes..all instruments come in loud and clear 👍👍
this is a great interview, talking freely about the band, the environment, my favourite mint, lol, but a caring human being instead of a sarcastic prick about the future. good one rick beato. how you keep scoring these interviews, good on yah and i support what you're doing my friend, these are courageous and important interviews for the future. keep going!
I cannot stop playing pneuma, invincible, and descending on my guitar. It’s just so simple but hypnotizing. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of writing. I’ve come up with about 13 potential songs since that album came out.
The 7/4 time is really cool and the chord shapes aren't crazy, it's the rhythmic complexity that really elevates those songs.
Pneuma gets me every time
Rock on brother
Pneuma is by far one of their best songs ever.
Me too!
Love Tool! I saw you guys at The Ventura Theater in California, early 90s. It was best concert I've ever seen! Still my favorite band.
Damn Tool at the Ventura Theater? Epic!
this setting makes a super human look and feel regular. i very much love that people who absolutely excel at any given thing make that thing seem so easy. maynard is entertaining and i appreciate getting these opportunities to hear from him without the persona of the front man being the dominating force. very enjoyable, rick. thumbs up.
the complex intelligence of a human is the most "human" trait .
I saw them for the second a couple nights ago, they are by far the best band I have seen live. Maynard's voice has aged but the band still puts out a great product in everything they do that is heard by the public. And they have so many lasers.
Tool is the most dynamic band in history, every song is a masterclass in musicianship.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@Philosufur They can coexist. They're entirely different bands. But if we're gonna act like one is inherently better, then we're being ignorant.
I'm a fan of both. That's like comparing Pink Floyd to Rush. You can have your own opinions but they're not even close.
@@PhilosufurLOL I love Meshuggah, but I would never say their music is particularly dynamic. Intricate? Absolutely. But it’s peak aggression and volume 98% of the time. Their records are very heavily compressed, to boot. Not many dynamics to be found.
The most dynamic band in history? Then why do all their songs all sound exactly the same.
Their last album sucked
I’m 52 now. I just want one more album from TOOL. Seriously and I say this apologetically, I did not like Fear Inoculum as a typical TOOL concept album. However 7empest is a mind blowingly bad ass masterpiece. That gawtdamn song resonates within my bones. Maynard is a young 60 year old man. Dude and company is the greatest American metal band ever. Please just one more album Tool. Thank you and bless
Maynard is so great!
Im a die hard fan of tool hes literally all I listen to, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to listen to pucifer but I heard humbling river and was sold, indigo children, bedlamite, man overboard, momma sed, etc I am owned by Maynard soulfully lol
Most of us have no idea what music can really sound like. If we listened to our favorite tracks on a $1000+ pair of studio headphones we'd be shocked at how much detail we've never heard.
And never cared about
You'll probably hear things the band wants left out
Imagine turning the radio off and listen to the V8 in your car and never miss anything.
@@disturbed157 probably not because they'd be mixing the album with $10,000 headphones.
I don't do cannabis much, but when I do a little to moderate amount and listen to the music, I can hear all the separate layers. Imagine if I did it with $1,000 headphones.
always love when MJK sits down for a good conversation
The only interviewer that Maynard takes seriously. He is aware that Rick has an extensive background and knowledge of how music works and operates.
He took Joe Rogan seriously. Didn't get so in depth musically, but he got to talk martial arts and wine-making
@@joeygilbert3558that’s probably for the best. I love the JRE but anytime he talks music I get so fucking mad. His musical knowledge is essentially Hendrix, Guns N’ Roses , and fucking Gary Clark jr who he views as a god of guitar lol
@@stevefromyellowstone7911 Joe Rogaine knows a whole lotta nothin
@kai326 and you do? Please....
@@FreakinRican6969 never claimed to be on a intellectually higher ground than him, just saying he’s a windbag.
It's great to hear this view point from Maynard regarding listening to mixes on phones etc I still listen to TOOL on both mobile devices and on CD when I get a chance and Tool still sounds amazing regardless. As a musician influenced by these guys, whatever you hear from their albums will always have a positive impact on the way I produce music. They're still amazing in my ears 🙂 If this makes sense.
Awesome interview, respect to Maynard and Tool.
Rick, you did a great job with this interview!
The video length would be 11:11 representing spiritual guidance, positivity and universal connection
Good times.
Ahhhhh what a time. 12 beer haha, I love it.
Going to see them 2-17-24. Can’t wait
He is growing up but he took his time yet still did pretty much everything excellent.
It’s like he was given a handbook somewhere on his path
“how to live life to infinite fullness “
Yeah, he's got it figured out for sure. I need that handbook!
Thank you Rick and Maynard for this interview!
I never watch, or read, interviews from any Tool band members. I like the mystery of not knowing much about them. They've made the best music in the world to me and I dont ever want a reason to not like them! Why am I here, I don't know.
Gotta love the TOOL Men and their associates in delivering this mental music which is with us for the long haul.
Of course the duration of this video would be 11:11....
11th like !
Rosseta was indeed stoned
Brilliant observation sir
Crazy...my birthday is 11/74.....11-11
👁️👁️:👁️👁️
MJK does not let his music side get into his own personal side in any way. Great interview!
FI was just another level of music. I hope there’s a follow-up
Its a fight to the death that makes for one of the most compelling musical ecosystems!
LOVE Maynard's shirt!! :D
"The economy is not based on investors and grownth and destruction of another country for resources". That's the golden one sentance from this clip.
I would kill for an interview of the whole band. Probably very difficult in terms of logistics, though
I think everyone would be onboard BUT Adam Jones. IDK why but he seems to be the most secluded/diva.
@@Dexiraynot at all, he is super humble not acting Like Diva at all. He just don't Like spotligh and keeps everything private. Nothing wrong with it.
That’s hard for any band
@@Dexiray rejecting the media is based. Let the art speak for itself. Adam's probably the coolest guy for that
I Discovered tool in 1995. I’ll never forget going to a friends house for lunch and eating a piece of cherry pie and seeing the video of Sober. I was never the same, on MTV
I could listen to Maynard for hours talking about music wine and just life.
Hes seems calmer ever since his mother died. Incredible musician. Love all three of his bands
I had this same experience at ozzfest. I couldn't believe how much it sounded like the records.
True.
saw them a week ago and man it did feel like everything i imagined it to be and then some since you could feel it and see it. but the sound was so amazing felt better than studio since you could just feel that guitar. god man i loved it so much but most impressive is how well Maynerd voice has held up over the years.
Such a good interview from a legend. Thank you, I’m going to make the best music soon some day n know I can become big. I have to tell myself this because I’m not gonna waste my talents I work so hard on and love. Some day ppl I know I will
It’s the reason why their music is so great. The approach to want to be perfect by all 4 shows in every album.
Maynard is such an intelligent guy but very good at speaking plain. You don't feel dumb speaking to him like you do Sir Dr. Brian May. EVRYONE who speaks to him understands what I mean. Polite man yes, one of my heros, but a very ecclectic, intelligent man, like an Issac Newton of our time I think.
Rick I enjoy your interviews and insight in to music history and the business. You can jam too my guy.
This entire interview is based on a mutual respect.
I love Maynard!!! so down to earth
Live-testing the pre-mastered music on multiple devices is key to music production.
insightful and well articulated i loved his book
Maynard James Keenan for president!
"In modern Hebrew and Yiddish goy is a term for a gentile, a non-Jew. Through Yiddish, the word has been adopted into English also to mean "gentile", sometimes in a pejorative sense. As a word principally used by Jews to describe non-Jews, it is a term for the ethnic out-group."
I think you clicked on the wrong video buddy pal
Take as long as you need. Every album is epic
Fear imoculum is awesome. The drums really steal the show in a good way.
I agree but that's every tool record.....a band is only as good as their drummer
I love the fact that James does all these same listening things to his mixes that I do. On a flash drive for my car, my stereo, in the studio. I write and record my own music and this is exactly what I do until I've finalized my mix. I have 2 sets of monitors in my little home studio and use both sets for comparisons too. Do people actually listen to their phones speakers? WTF?
