From 2014 through the official invasion in February 2022, Russia was supporting pro-Russia separatist "militias" in eastern Ukraine (in addition to having annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014). With the advent of an official Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia unmasked itself, no longer having to pretend that the separatist militias were purely indigenous to Ukraine. Jinjer are from eastern Ukraine, and had to leave their homes when the fighting started in 2014, so Russia waging war on Ukraine was not new in 2022, it was just a political and military escalation of an 8 year old war.

The lyrics and perspective of the song are the experience of war (the 2014 invasion) through the eyes of a young child who is trying to comprehend what she is seeing given her childhood experences. So soldiers with rifles look like unicorns, explosion clouds look like angels in the sky, air raid siens sound like mermaids. Her daily expriences of tea parties and dolls and roosters crowing are replaced by 'fire in the hole'. The had to flee, but when they came back, their home was not their castle anymore. When you understand and feel the lyrics, it changes your whole perspective. This becomes one of the most brutal and heart-wrenching accounts of war in modern music, metal or otherwise.

Ukraine gained independence in 1991 during the fall of the Soviet Union. This war started in 2014 with the Russian invasion of Crimea and then the Russian invasion in the Donbas in 2015. They are from Donetsk which has been occupied by Russia since 2015 and haven’t been able to go home.

Released on the 2019 album, Macro. The home they want back is in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, in the part annexed by Russia in 2014. The song is about the fighting back then, but the song still applies today.

It’s amazing to me how JNJER can have such complex chord progressions and time signatures and be so busy, but yet Tatiana is floating all above it singing the way she does and it all sounds in sync and connected, making for groundbreaking music. I’m beginning to think that because of JINJER, many of the newer bands like The Warning, are able to use more complex time signatures and it sounds great. The Warning was able to get an entire section of a song past me without even me noticing that they were playing in 7/8.

Jinjer is from Donbass region. 2014 there was an invasion of "little green men" that sparked civil war around eastern parts of Ukraine and what led to annexation of Crimean peninsula. The "little green men" were basically Russian troops without any identifiers and as such I don't think the eventual "Special military operation" was any surprise to Ukrainians. The song was made because 2014 conflict and thus predates the "official" start of the war

@@hemlock399 does it excuse Ukarainian and usa's interference in our business? In Russia. USA and Europe interfered before USSR fell. They wanted make a third country 'Kozakia'/ "South Russia". It has several names. Even Ukrainian say it's true. They raised the conflict. They made a government for Russian land in Austria. I didn't choose 'the head of my land' according to democratic.
The Crimea conflict. Why did they raise the conflict between Tatars and Russians in Crimea if they wanted peace? Have you heard about that? So, Tatars, Türks and Russian didn't start this conflict. Ukrainians and co wanted and created it.
Did you read documents? Minsk-1 and Minsk-2. Donbass was a part of Ukraine according that. Have you heard what Scholz said on meetings with nato. December 2021.
I am from Voronezh, baby. Do you think you know more than me? You even don't speak any language of the conflict. I was raised in both. I know all this paid opposition from liberal to nazis. They all belong to Europe and USA. They had and have money from them. Openly. Just choose one and check.

Hey guys, great react as always. Thanks for coming back to Jinjer. They're my favorite band and I'm always here for them.
Ok I'm about to get political. I'm a lifelong pacifist and antiwar protestor. In our lifetimes, all the wars America has gotten into have been fucked up. The war in Ukraine is different. Putin is very much like Hitler, bros. Totalitarianism and tyranny are on the march, just like they were in WW2. There are some people out there who really don't think like us. They want to kill and torture anyone who doesn't think like them. Ukrainians are the innocent civilians being killed--and not accidentally caught in the crossfire--Russia is deliberately targeting civilians. They make no bones about it bro.
Ukraine was literally just minding its own business, when Russia came at them and started genociding them. It started before 2014. It's called Russification. Look it up, it's a thing. The first step is to purposely relocate a bunch of (innocent) Russian speaking families to neighboring countries that they want to take over. Then they start and support separatist movements and call up militia, encouraging ethnic unrest. Then they start repressing the local cultural identity, e.g., forbidden to speak Ukrainian, must speak Russian. Before long they start literally kidnapping children, force relocating them to Russian families, and brainwashing them to eradicate their Ukrainian culture. (We did some of that in America with Native American children and culture, and it's one of our more shameful episodes.) It's literally genocide. They come at the day care centers bro, for real. Preschools and shit.
The next step is to annex those neighboring territories. That's what Russia did in 2014 with the Ukrainian oblasts of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea. It's a bit like if Mexico decided they wanted Texas back, and just claiming it for Mexico. Nah bro, it's still America. But we stood by and watched.
In 2022 Putin launched what he called his "Special Military Operation" by invading Ukraine unprovoked. His plan was to decapitate Ukrainian government, take the capitol Kyiv by force, and declare Ukraine extinct. He thought he could do it in three days. The Ukrainians believed otherwise, and David is still proving their belief is stronger than Goliath's over two years later.
The free world is lucky Ukrainians are so tough and courageous. Otherwise Putin would be rolling across Europe right now, just like fkn Hitler did. Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Poland, all would be in jeopardy.
Those are NATO countries bro. They stood with us after 9/11 and spilled their own blood helping America. Our fathers and grandfathers spilled blood liberating them from Hitler. Do we turn our backs on them now? Do we let Putler have them? Nah dudes. Nah. We owe Ukraine a debt of gratitude for standing up in the face of fascism and giving Putin the big middle finger.
Time for us to wake the hell up. Do we need another Pearl Harbor to recognize a threat to democracy? This shit is real, bro. And guess what: they're not even asking us to spill a drop off American blood! They'll do the heavy lifting. All we need to do is help out with THREE PERCENT of our military budget (not even the overall budget) which BTW goes mostly to AMERICAN JOBS to replenish the old stockpile armaments we've been sending Ukraine. Until we stopped in October. Time to start that shit back up right fkn now! Slava Ukraine! Glory to the heroes! Slava Jinjer! As an American I mean to make sure they get their fucking home back! ❤ Peace through victory!

Thank you guys for bringing the fantastic music of Jinjer to more people!
It's so sad to see so many of my fellow Jinjer fans (some of the other commenters here) and others so blinded by US imperial war profiteering propaganda. In 2014 was the US backed coup led by Ukrainian fascists (Azov Battalion, Banderites, etc) that started a civil war (intended by the US to start a proxy war with Russia which Russia tried for eight years to resolve with diplomacy), where the Ukrainian military, led by Ukrainian fascists, killed 14 thousand Russian speaking Ukrainians from 2014 to 2022 in the Donbas region including Donetsk where Jinjer is from. The "fire in the hole" lyric in Home Back is about the Ukrainian military killing Russian speaking Ukrainians. That's what Jinjer had to flee. The people in Crimea voted to leave Ukraine because they did not recognize the US backed coup regime which was de facto run by US backed Ukrainian fascists, you can find video of those fascists pointing guns at the Ukrainian parliament members. Russia got involved in 2022 to stop the US from handing nuclear weapons to the US backed fascists in Ukraine.
Jinjer's song Sit Stay Roll Over has lyrics directly quoting some of these Ukrainian fascists' mottos, "one path, one past, one trust", which is then flipped in the lyrics to, "it's not one's path, it's not one's past, it's not one's trust, it's not my path!, it's not my past!, it's not my trust!". If you're going to get any part of that song stuck in your head, make sure it's the flipped part and not the fascist motto.
