A History of Elementals

- Elementals have been a part of Magic: The Gathering since the 1993 Alpha release, and have appeared on over 460 cards to date. With Zendikar Rising promising to bring even more, now is a perfect time to get caught up on the history of this fascinating five-color tribe.

It's amazing how the quality of Ryan & Nicole's content - already great - is improving with time: not only lore and information, but also meta context (and criticism when due), precise summaries of past & present and finally a look at the future! The vorthos community is lucky to have you two (: can't wait for what you have in store!
Pinned like an actual cockade.
May Marcos blessing afford this channel all the protection it deserves.
Yea I'm continuously impressed with how far he's come.
Color pie history and time spiral would be a fantatic vid
TempestDacine agreed
Early Magic: Cards were either nutty good or a cardboard mistake. What a wild time.
IHazMagics I am still astounded that the good cards were intentionally busted and the bad cards were intentionally awful...old magic was weird
Generally the early instants and sorceries were overpowered, while the creatures were underpowered.
Magic cards today are either nutty good or a cardboard mistake, lol.
I mean some current cards can also be cardboard mistake.
@@walterchristy5463 yeah but it's less extreme, there might be a few nutty good cards, a bunch of okay cards and some cardboard mistakes in a set, as opposed to a bunch of nutty good instants and sorceries and a bunch of cardboard mistake creatures.
Ryan has the energy of your friend’s cool dad
Yes he does or that cool uncle
you could hear the excitement in his voice when he called it a "hell-emental"
You should do an "history of mustaches in magic" I would like to hear your take on brink of madness
I feel like that's the kind of thing I have to save for celebrating 50k or 100k subs but I do love the idea!
Numer 1 contender? Land Tax! Waaario! Now, pay me. Lol!
Magic Arcanum We’ve seen plenty Chair and Hat Tribal Commander decks. I’m looking forward to a Mustache Tribal deck.
Long Ago, the elementals lived in harmony, but everything changed when Moss Monster attacked.
I'm creating a MTG based RPG, your's, lorebrarian's, and aether hub's videos have been the most helpful since I started.
I loved the original fire elemental. I use that one to represent a freind of mine who passed some time ago. She was a beautiful free spirit.
Sorry for your loss Scott, but I'm glad to know this video helped keep her memory alive.
Omnath is amazing!!!! I can't wait for his zandikar rising card!
It was literally built for commander, no one cares about us standard players
Last time i was this early, birthing pod was still banned in modern.
Temur elementals is my Favorite EDH deck. Omnath, Locus of the Roil is my favorite commander!
No Earth, Wind & Fire joke? Sad September noises...
Baba ba da da!
I guess he didn't remember
Couldn't agree more: when creatures are setting the tone of the game thru synergies and unique, fun abilities MTG is at its best!
16:00 Oh, I remember this week! It was the time I brought out my greatest invention: the Mirror March deck. It had about 6 elementals in it and 4 of those were reef, yet I managed to draw myself to death at least twice with the cursed thing. Those were days...
You didn’t mention my favorite elemental, thorn elemental
Favourite Elemental? For sure Horde of Notions. I saw this card and was instantly in love with it so I built an Elemental 5-color-good-stuff EDH deck. Unfortunately not the best commander you could wish for, but I just love all the flavour the deck has. With Horde at it's front, everything elemental you can think of such as Primal Beyond, Flamekin Village, Incandescent Soulstroke, Liege of the Tangle, Risen Reef, Thicket Crasher and all the Omnaths, and goodies such as Cavern, Urza's Incubator, Coat of Arms and Door of Destinies. It's slow, but when it rolls, it rolls 😉
A History of Elves, Goblins, Dragons, Angels or Merfolk would be great.
One of my favorites is Rumbling ruin. When it enters the battlefield, it counts how many +1/+1 counters your creatures have, and any creatures your opponents have that are less than that number can't block. Play it after you drop Omnath or Awakening of Vitu Ghazi and you just won the game.
I’m so glad to watch another one of these. So can I ask what’s your favorite elemental
You can ask but I answer it in the video, so... :-)
Magic Arcanum ohh really sorry. Uhm but yeah you should do the time spiral idea.
I’ve always loved your videos and Elementals is definitely one of my favorite tribes. This has reminded me that something I think would be nice is covering old Magic stories for newer players (Like me cause I started doing WAR), stuff like the weatherlight saga, the history of planes like Lorwyn and Alara, stuff like that
I know a good amount about MTG and the history but, every time I watch one of these I always learn something new. I look forward to learning more.
my favorite elementals were in Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, i especially love Ashling
I'm about a year and a half into Magic and there's few things as fascinating to me as Time Spiral block. I'd love to hear more about it!
I just built an Elemental tribal Commander deck around Horde of Notions! Awesome Vid Ryan, my favorite elemental is probably Risen Reef; it has great flavor text and its probably the best card in my deck.
18:02 I really like that line.
It’s profound.
Great video as always. I was a little bit disappointed that Omnath wasnt brought up in the video, but was really interesting to see other elemental cards through all sets.
Omnath and the other legendary elementals will get their own video in a few weeks.
I look forward to the legendary elemental videos
Why was Time Spiral so controversial? I love it but I also did not play during this time of MTG.
Powerful cards & color pie breaks.
Also, it was super complicated and new-player unfriendly
It involved reprinting cards but changing what colour the card was. A lot of neat stuff, but it also lets colours do things that they aren't supposed to do
@@plurplis9599 I can understand that.
@@trumanderee2366 Agreed
Elemental, dear WotC!
This video is now the guidebook to my elemental deck. thanks mate
Always enjoyed Magic Arcanum. Great job on the video! Would love a rundown on the history of the Phyrexians from Yawgmoth to what is going on with Karn after War of the Spark.
As someone who didn't get the chance to play time spiral block, but has been playing heavily for about a decade. I love the effect time spiral cards have had on the game. The color pie is important. But having some splash effects into other colors, especially ones that are considerably weaker than their on color counterparts, is important in my opinion. It demonstrates that while you will never be as good as those naturally attuned to the proper color, if you work hard enough and are willing to pay the costs, you can cast a feasible imitation. Stingscourger is a great example of this. When I, a red mage, summon a sting scourger. It shows that I have the dedication and time put into having learned the spell. But having it be 2 mana, without flash, and a horrible echo cost, it also shows that I have to struggle and give up much more than other mages. Beast within is often cited as a regret for breaking the color pie (not timespiral but same issue). But for me, beast within is fantastic. It shows how phyrexian twisted the nature of things around them. And how Vorinclex's unique brand of green mana twisted by phyrexia corrupts those around it into the beasts he sees as apex predators. Color pie breaks should never be great, but they should exist to fill some niche roles that otherwise have a vacancy. Especially for colors who's color pie is to restrictive (white and red).
I had never seen an artifact elemental. Great video once again.
Malignus is one of my favorites, he is great on my boros deck.
Im glad you guys got your sound fixed 👍
Another fun video Ryan! Keep going
You should do an "History of Merfolks"! would love to see what's the deal behind this tribe
P.S - Love the show keep it up!
My first commander happened to be Omnath, Locus of the Roil. Since then I am collecting elementals for it. I saw the art for Omnath in one of the preview products for Zendikar Rising and Omnaty having 4 colors on its 4 arms makes me believe they will add white to it :D
I didn't realise Chandra's Spitfire was a reprint! I had just assumed it was a new design precisely BECAUSE of how smoothly it slotted into what loquacious folks might call "death of a thousand cuts tribal".
Briarhorn is my favorite. Love it so much I have a huge print on my wall.
And no word for Thorn Elemental, famous for killing a Rhox in an 3D intro video? Ok, that matters only to me, I did not play MTG at the time of that video was released, but it shocked me because of its realism. I just rewatched and... I shouldn't have and I would have kept that memory alive. Good thing your videos do not have that problem, great work mates.
finally! i cant believe youre covering my favorite tribe..
"How do they stack up to dragons, elves, and brushwags?" Spice 8 Rack would like to know your location
He has my number.
I would love to see a collab between you two. Doesn't matter about what it is, I'll watch it
Fun Fact: I own an updraft elemental, and seriously considered putting it in my mono blue commander deck because I was running low on flyers.
Storm wing entity was used in an Izzet aggro deck that won the recent red bull untapped international qualifier 5 tourney
My favorite elemental is ingot chewer, for being the incarnation of "smashitude."
I'm hoping that in Zendikar Rising there's some sort of sneak attack style enchantment that let's you turn your lands into a copy of an elemental in your hand for cheap, like turning all your lands into a duplicant of an elemental in hand
We see what happens when power is concentrated into planeswalkers and artifacts.
HOGAAK: hold my beer.
10/10 would watch planar chaos episode. Imp's Mischief is my favorite gatcha card. XD
I heard Time Spiral. I'd love to hear more on my favorite block. The absolute *destruction* of the color pie in Planar Chaos was the best (but so were the color-shifted cards look and the "future" cards from Future Sight). Though Time Spiral was fun with bringing back old cards
I've never heard that anyone thought Time Spiral was controversial, so please cover it soon!
I would absolutely love to hear the story behind Planar Chaos and Time Spiral!
I always thought if i was a planeswalker my middle ability would be "gain control of all elementals"
I can't wait for Omnath lore. Yes I would love to see a video about why time spiral is so controversial
He did one on tcg channel ua-cam.com/video/J0yJwsVvCU4/v-deo.html
Roil Elemental! When the set came out, I was like this card has potential! I would also like a deeper dive into the Time Spiral as well! 🙏🙏🙏
I have been considering building a Elemental based commander deck and this is really great insight into what they can do
Came for my boy Tectonic Giant, was not disappointed
Another great vid keep up the awesome work.
I try to collect them all, Omnath got me
Already waiting for that Time Spiral video!
Elementals are just baby avatars.
“Elementals are just baby avatars.”
Multani & Muldrotha: “Are we a joke to you?”
Omnath: well yes but actually no
I would like both the legendary elemental video and the time spiral video
I love Multani. I'm such a sucker for book tie-in cards.
A color pie vid about Time Spiral block would interesting. You could probably make a similar video about Scars of Mirrodin, especially with its greatest mistake, Phyrexian mana.
As for Elementals, given Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are basically what really got me into _M:tG_ (despite how little I get to play), I look fondly on their Elementals the most. Don't really have a favorite, though I would say that Ashenmoor Gouger has the most memorable flavor text of them and that Fulminator Mage is the "funniest" mechanically.
Ashling is my favorite elemental. I had a deck box and sleeves ❤️
I love the designs of the non-kin Lorwyn elementals. Their abstract forms are just so interesting to me. Probably my favorite elemental art in all of MTG is the Woeleecher from Shadowmoor. Despite it's gross grubbiness, it's kinda cute.
Edit: Initially said Mindleecher, but I meant Woeleecher. I corrected it.
They also updated old Multani and Molimo to be Elementals. Important to know for Omnath decks.
About to go to bed when see new story time video. Good bed time story.
I think Multani has to be my favorite, i love the story around him and that in his first appearance he just ‘shuts off’ a god! (Urza for those who dont know) but a follow up has to be the Maze Elementals. Again story but this time mostly flavor. Just really cool idea!
Avenger of Zendikar and Omnath (in particular locus of rage)
They are from my second favorite plane, and i get both cards as christmass present from my fiance ❤
would like to see a history of Lands. starting off as something that just gives us mana to something like desert which can hurt people or unholy grotto that can return a zombie to your hand from graveyard
I've actually got an izzet tempo deck that runs the Sprite and the Stormwing Entity! Super fun deck. Actually uses Will and Rowan too!
Rust Elemental is a treat to donate to someone with Zedruu.
You forgot to mention Worldwake double color Elemental manlands, like Celestial Colonnade for example. And any mention of Lightning Skelemental is incomplete without his BFF, Thunderkin Elemental. Other interesting ones were Morningtide Reveillark, which pave the way for his grandson, Vesperlark.
I freaking loved Time Spiral block, and I miss my UR suspend deck with Jhoira at the helm. It got me to Top 8 in FNM without me realizing it 😅. It saddens me that I no longer have most of my cards from the block, save for a fair amount of rares, including four Akroma, Angel of Furies and Ancestral Visions.
Definitely got to do a video about breaking the color pie!!
Everyone was mad about the Risen Reef, and after Uro got printed, the Reef never seen play again
The Lightning Rager token from Rite of the Raging Storm. In my commander playgroup we simply call him "Bernt", it's the norwegian name of Bert from Bert and Ernie. He's kinda like a mascot for our playgroup :)
Storm Entity, bought one for my cube, bought one weeks later for mono red edh, again for temur elemental edh and then again for jeskai mutate edh
Just discovered the channel, and I'm really liking it :D
I love your videos
I do love the time spiral era but do recognise its issues and would love to hear your take on it so I definitely say go for it!
7:50 Nah planar chaos cards have to be read with "this is an example of what should never exist in normal sets" in mind. It's not made to confuse people, just to teach them with examples.
Standard Players: huh stormwing entity never really took off
Modern Players: 😳help
My favorite elemental has to be Obsidian Fireheart, mainly because he was the first mythic rare I ever pulled.
Great Vid! More about tribes please!
“So he’s like a power ranger?”
-Ryan Gomez 2020
You gotta cover the best tribe in all of magic: soldiers!
I'm sure I'll get to them someday!
Magic Arcanum nothing would make me happier, especially with some highlights like tajic, blade of the legion! He’s a personal favorite since he was my first commander. Soldiers have some strange old cards as well.
Video on the legendary Elementals? Hell yeah.
Video on the controversity of Time Spiral? Hell yeah
Video on any other Magic lore topic? Hell yeah.
I would love to see a video on time spiral block. I play mostly commander and love going through it for some goodies.
Phytotitan has always been my homeboy and all ways will be.
Yes please time spiral is my personal favorite magic block
Great video but I just thought to myself that in wrath of cortex there was 4 elementals because Crash had to defeat crunch 4 times based of the elementals you mansion thanks to your legendary video!
Once again great job!
NOW THIS IS CONTENT
ELEMENTAL TRIBAL LETS GOOOO
a time spiral video would be sooooo awesome!
I'm sure this video will be great and I'm eagerly excited for it
That being said, if for some reason the Phyrexian's suddenly come up in the conversation *again*, I'm gonna pop a blood vessel.
#PhyrexiansWhen
Yeah I think Phyrexians are on hold until everyone can wear a mask and/or stay home. I don't feel great talking about a tribe obsessed with "infection" when we have 170,000 dead in my country from a raging epidemic.
@@MagicArcanum this is why i sub to these channel your so incredible and caring
As an alternate suggestion, and a totally not obvious one, *cough* vampires *cough*. More specifically, the Sengir bloodline. Or as a wishlist item, I don't think the red vampires get enough love lately. Cheers sir!
Time Spiral block was awesome!!!
Would love to see that Time Spiral video!
My favorite elemental will always be Thorn Elemental.
Elementals aren't a tribe I play much, but I got a weak spot for Cavalier of Night. Lifelink, murder for a sac and reviving something when it dies. Allmost all the themes of a black deck, in one card. Perfect. Three pips for devotion allso helps my Garry. Lovin' it
That's one of my favorites too. Going to miss it when it rotates, for sure!
@@MagicArcanum
Allmost only playing historic for the time, so, that won't be a problem for me :)
