- The humans of Magic: The Gathering have been a part of the story since the very beginning, but how have they changed over the years? How do they measure up to some of the game’s other fantastic creatures? And which one has the best mustache?
From Dominaria, to Mirrodin, to Innistrad, and beyond, come along as we study a history of humans!

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by to study A History of Humans. As always, I just wanted to answer some of the most common questions here real quick:
1. "Humans is actually a valid deck in Modern!" Ok that's true, but my hypothetical version relied on huge "burst damage" and not "general all around good cards" that the current Humans deck is known for. This does bring up another question though - would these videos be better if I incorporated more actual deck knowledge in here, rather than jokes? Let me know what you think!
2. "You look like General Kudro!" Yes, and I suspect I'm going to be hearing that for at least the next 18 months or so, until he rotates.
3. "hehehe, who is their daddy/mommy!" Excellent, you fell for my trap and made a comment. The algorithm goblins will be most pleased!
4. "haha, JESSICA!" I hear her essential oils home business is really taking off, but still, I hope she has regrets about not dating the man who would end up looking like General Kudro.
fav human is Odric lunarch marshal , built a deck with him as commander for a mono white build
Humans are everywhere because we are human and it gives something for us to connect with by playing the game. Also, Magic, the Gathering plays off of our view of mythical worlds. Seeing that it's our view, we humans by default would be everywhere.
Loved the video, but when the G-word was dropped at 4:16 it just took me out and felt off. I really love the magic arcanum content and can tell that you guys care about presenting the right image, so just thought I'd point that out.
@@lobstershoes9273 This video was created before WotC decided that card did not meet Magic community standards. Obviously if I were to make this episode today, I'd use a different card, but at the time even I was unaware that this card was actively harmful. I apologize to anyone watching this video now and hope that they will understand my intent was not to be hurtful.
@@MagicArcanum Super glad to hear you're on the right side of things here. Thanks for being part of the solution!
Wtf this isn't about anthropology?!
@@lulmamgay1133 YES!
It's not season 2 of Community.
🤣
Why are humans everywhere? Just blame Urza. He's probably involved somehow.
Harold Sandahl what isn’t Urza’s fault?
The Eldrazi, but even then I'm sure he had something to do with the increase in their activity even if he wasn't aware of what his actions would unleash.
@@TheOnlyBootlegger I don't see a good connection to Oko.
Urza is definitely the Ur-Human
Two of my Favourite Humans are: Ryan and Nicole Magic Arcanum
I think humans must somehow be more likely to develop Planeswalker sparks, because if you look at them like, well over half of the Planeswalker are humans, so that probably explains why the multiverse has so many
I think there are just more humans, period. When the odds of getting a spark are one in a million, it helps to have a million humans to tip the odds!
@@MagicArcanum I suppose it could work either way! More humans mean more sparks, or more sparks equal more humans. Love the content, keep it up!
I think a game where the majority of players are humans would probably have a lot of humanoids with sparks :)
Magic Arcanum I. Think so to hey so what’s your opion on twins both havihn planswalker sparks if one does cause I think that has been precedent has been set with bolas and Ugin, and, Rowan and the other one
@@MagicArcanum i think it's just that the story has focused more on human planeswalkers. We have no idea how many planeswalkers there are
The idea that humans are less interested in what they share in common and more interested with who they can defeat is a theme that I feel sadly mirrors reality a little too closely.
Great video!
"sadly"
I love the idea of an Ur Human
Corey Jasper Ur-man!
Ur za
@@Jbcblack oh god damn it urza did you have to spread the most boring species through the multiverse?
It's that progenitor race from star trek
i like the loss of humanity in delver of secrets > aberrant researcher > docent of perfection
this series of cards is what got me into the game 2 years ago, seriously
I've always loved that series of cards. Such wonderful flavor.
So I pay a red and a black to tap my rebellious human to "Whose my daddy and what does he do!?"
My theory of how humans spread across the multiverse is a simple one:
In a long-forgotten past, all humans were Planeswalkers. They learned to walk, then run, then planeswalk, then planesrun. But as their visage of the multiverse grew, they each became attached to certain planes, which they settled upon. Their ancient ways of traversing the planes were all but forgotten. They had no more need for it. But in more recent times, sparks were ignited. The ancient ways were ingrained in their very genome, and as such, humans in need of this forgotten art would rekindle its power. As for the other creatures of the multiverse, their learning of planeswalking could be interpreted in many ways. Perhaps humans intermingled with their type in ancient times. Perhaps they are humans, just misshapen by time. Perhaps all life always had what it took to have a spark, only humans were the most perceptive to it. Humans are, as it would seem, still the most perceptive to planeswalking powers, and for good reason.
I like it. Someone's a trekkie lol..
@@DETHofMAN what's a trekkie?
Now they planesuber
What about sex
@@aklepatzky BRUH
I know this is kinda cheating, but Geist of Saint Traft always appealed to me greatly. Innistrad as a plane was part of my first experience playing Mtg and I always found myself drawn to how the humans on the plane managed to survive. Faith as a concept is a very literal and tangible force on Innistrad and seeing how the people there interact is incredibly interesting to me.
P.S. You haven't even begun to see the power of the Gallows, you can kill a spirit to unleash another spirit! Ghost-ception!
This was oddly motivating
Also, can we get a video discussing General Tazri?
Seeing the pop-up of your video’s always makes my day, thanks as always!
Can you please do a history of goblins because they are one of my favourite card types . Also even if you don’t I still love your videos.
Best human is Thalia: lore wise she had to go through trial that tests her faith and what she believes in. She fought against zombies, planeswalkers, and even eldritch angles. Game play wise she has made impact in every format she legal in. That is why Thalia is not just best girl but best human
The Eldritch angles, lead by lord rightangle
My favourite human is Delver of Secrets, until turn two.
Nobody:
Wizards of the coast: *if it flank, it be a human*
...or a centaur!
Or sliver!
Shapeshifter 👀
You’re my favorite human, Ryan.
You have quite some resemblances with general kudro
"And thats said by Radiant, an angel. So I think she knows what she's talking about"
Yea when I think Radiant, I think good ideas.
I'm cracking up at the idea of lynching Emrakul 🤣🤣🤣
I think a logistical reason for humans being everywhere, except Lorwyn, is because the multiverse is on some level just variations of Dominaria
Thalia is, clearly, the best human, and also best MTG girl. I will fight people on this.
Liliana tho
@@jeannebouwman1970 Lefy her humanity behind when she became a plainswalker again at the cost of dividing her immortal soul between 4 demons. Hence not having the human creature type. Therefore! Shush. Best girl is still Thalia.
@@loreguru3083 emrakul is best girl
@@DarthJarJar501 ... Okay, so Emrakul does appeal to my lovecraftian waifu and tentacle fetish but... NO, NO, STAY STRONG, NICK! STICK WITH THALIA, SHE IS PURE AND STRONG AND GOOD.
@@loreguru3083 emrakul also is the angel emeria. You cant get more purer than an angel.
You should do a history of Kamigawa or a history of the Moon Folk
But General Tazri only cares about other Allies, not other Humans. I mean, she is great and all, but both mechanicly speaking and flavour-wise, Kenrith would be more suited to unify the humans against other threats.
Our fellow humans? Are you assuming my species?
I wake up, drenched in a cold sweat. It happens the same every night since this video first dropped. I drag myself to the bathroom sink, splash myself with cold water and stare into the mirror. It still haunts me, I can see the question behind my baggy eyes. "Who their daddy is?"
So essentially what we learn is it took till Innistrad the grim dark plane for Humans to learn about strength in numbers, something WH40k humans learned almost from the get go.
@ 8:12 "It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead." - Kyle Reese
Hey dude I love your videos I don’t know why they way kicked you out of tcg that was stupid of them your awesome man
Wouldn’t the Ur-Human be Richard Garfield?
My favorite plane was Mirrodin. The plane was then invaded by the BIGGEST bad. cool heel Phyrexia. Now New Phyrexia is my favorite plane. and we havent been there since i was in college.
Eldraine had a humans v non-humans theme too.
Also worth mentioning the card Village Cannibals. Humans had a kind of aristocrat style sub theme in Innistrad too.
sooooooooo... this is why i now hate humans. im the same species of agent of treachery?!?!?
Surprisingly uplifting. 10/10 Also, The Gallows is literally one of the most underrated cards ever!
Darien, king of kjeldor
Just get a claric that let's you gain life when a creature ETBs and watch as your life never changes and you gain a hoard of soldiers
15:20
are you not aware that human tribal is a top tier deck in modern?
...maybe I just don't want anyone else getting in on this sweet deck...
Favorite human and Commander- Jodah, Archmage Eternal
My favourite human is Odric. Lunarch Marshall was my first build around, before I even knew what formats were. I now have an EDH deck helmed by him (along with an Alela deck featuring him). Not my strongest deck, especially since it's mono white, but it has a special place in my heart.
Queen Marchesa (long may she reign) is my favorite
Can you make a video about how kamigawa is the best set
I feel like these videos have always major History channel vibes, and I'm all for that. A Drunk History of (insert obscure tribe here) would be golden
It's really way too hard to pick a single favourite human, but I don't think my love for Judith, Scourge Diva is gonna go away just because she rotates out. Such a fun and stylish card.
As for my favourite *janky* human, it's gotta be Crafty Cutpurse.
I remember playing in Innistrad block a G/W Human deck with Champion of the Parish and Mayor of Avabruck. The Mayor was so good in that deck as a 2 mana lord that if you let sit got 100 times worse. With Kessig Cagebreakers as my top end, it was a beautiful mono human deck that could swarm with wolves...
But- but now I want a video from Spice 8 Rack on who is Humans' Daddy.
Ideally with the conclusion that the question is sexist and clearly we should be more accurately asking who is human's Mummy? *peak resistance sound effects in background*
Ive always hated humano-centric blocks the most. Outside of innistrad. Which was a story of humanity vs things that take humanity. This is a magical multiverse, we can do better than JUST humanity. I mean god. We have tall, blue humanoids with six fingers. We have like 3 different types of lizard person. We have 8 different catfolk varieties. Elves, dwarves, goblins. But no, the one race that actually exists is the one to get the most attention.
But... You put Agent of Treachery in the thumbnail and didn't discuss him at all..!
Great vid tho :)
ua-cam.com/video/lSbTCWRWlBY/v-deo.htmlm51s I've warmed a lot about Ikoria in the last few weeks, at least lore-wise, but I fully agree with you.
Since it was a pretty wacky set conceptually I'm pretty sure that it would have gained incredibly by having its themes expanded upon in a full-blown block instead of having a single snippet set as we got now (Apexes are incidentally there as cards and without flavor text i'm basically left there wondering who those legendary creatures are supposed to be, Lavabrink/Skysail both barely mentioned, the theme of Bonders vs. Hunters alongside the theme of Humans vs. Monsters seem to be tackled upon).
Jhoira of the Ghitu is my all-time favorite human. Want to summon both a Greater Gargadon and Deep-Sea Kraken without spending an obscene amount of mana? Suspend them both with four time counters! (I miss my suspend deck.)
"Why are humans everywhere?" ...except Lorwyn which have NO humans at all. I guess the Ur Human saw the backwater plane and was like "Nah"
Like a year ago I decided to change my Kaalia of the Vast deck from the usual to a "tell a story" deck instead. The deck has exactly 7 dragons, 7 demons, 7 angels ande 7 humans. I like to think the humans represent people being attacked and try to defend themselves the best way they can do, in the meantime, their priestess (Kaalia) complete the ritual to summon the beasts. Humans I play on that deck are for defence (Michiko Konda, Grand Abolisher, etc), because I like the idea of humans always forming a resistance group.
Always seen Surrak Dragonclaw as some kind of survivalist uber humanXD
That video makes me think. Is there something greater and spreading different races on different planes just to see what happens...like a plane sized petri dish?
The Karnfather is daddy duhhh! Humans are everywhere cuz they’re like rats, no stopping them no matter how many Ulamog squishes.
Please do a video with Spice8Rack about the history of human self-inserts in Magic. Lorwynn could be a super interesting case study
"Nerds in the 1990's didn't have the sophisticated sense of humor we have today."
Me: *looks at Gary The Ass Fondler*
this video convinced me to buy the human commander 2020 deck and its now one of my strongest and favourite commander decks (just behind my tribal phyrexian deck).
How could someone argue with E. Witness being the greatest human ever printed?! Sure Agent of Treachery is good, but he's way better when brought back for round two.
My favorite human creature card is all of Kamigawa block. Why did you choose to forget my favorite human all of Kamigawa block?
Where’s the Phyrexians video, Ryan? You said we’d get that video an entire CHANNEL ago. 🤣
responding to your post #1 Don't take out your jokes I relate to this channel deeply because of this. adding more Card knowledge jokes could be clever.
Production Value through the roof!!! Thanks for another great video! Also I didn't realize myrodin was the first set with real humans

Humans are ok, I guess - at least in MtG... That's why merfolk is the best tribe! 🧜🏻♂️
All of the characteristic creatures of each color (humans, elves, goblins, zombies/vampires, and merfolk) are wildly ubiquitous in the multiverse. Humans are the most prevalent, but it seems likely that there's some...order to the multiverse that means life tends to develop into relatively small humanoids. Their populations vary wildly, and not all are present on all planes, but most planes have a large population of at least two or three characteristic creatures.
Ixalan humans of Sun Empire... they're fricking Dino Riders
Agrus Kos, but my first deck was the og Ravnica Boros pre constructed, so I'm bias. Boros Legion represent
I think humans are so common because we are very antropocentric in our story tellings. But if I'd to explain it lore wise, I would say that humans are very common among planes, because planeswalkers are mostly humans, so they can colonize most of planes and constantly increase their knowledge by learning from a variety of places.
I think you should've talked about some of the human planeswalkers, because it shows that when put to the test, humans can do anything. Also, you talked about them already, so.....
Jackie Chan(Snapcaster Mage) and Bob (Dark Confidant)
Great Video, by the way
Gustrider Exuberant. I found that card lodged in a wall at band camp. I took it. Then a teacher told me about magic, I went to a game store they recommended, bought two packs of new phyrexia, and the rest is history.
Well, Champion of the Parish into Thalias Lieutenant are played in the 5C Humans Deck in Modern, so the opener is actually not so far of.
Just saw this in my notifications. So hyped! Your channel and videos are a source of joy and happiness during the quarantine. Thank you.
Ghoulcaller Gisa is both my favorite human and also probably just my favorite card in the game. She's blatant goth bait and I love her.
There is something Jake Gyllenhaal-y in your eyes. Also, I wondered what made me love Innistrad, and I think you described it really well.
if we talking fav human it Azusa, Lost but Seeking she my fav mono colored commander and I also like Amulet Titan in Modern who she a 4 of in it
perhaps, its not that humans spread out on the multiverse. perhaps, the question is about how planes are maded, maybe most of them are divergences from others planes, that would explain why, humans, goblins, elf, spirits, and other tribes, are so presents in most of plains. (didnt included zombies, cause, they are more a product)
Looks like you didn't say a thing about Kamigawa...
I guess you need to make a Kamigawa block story to make up for it, what a shame
This is why I love your channel. So glad you guys got the production value back up to the height of your previous channel. Major kudos to you both.
just from the title and concept of the video i'd assume it would be the most boring thing in magic the gathering history :P who cares about humans?
Champion of the Parish into Thalia's Lieutenant is the foundation for one of the best decks in modern. That deck doesn't run thatcher's revolt, but not because it is too slow per se, but because:
a) there are just better options in cards like Mantis Rider and
b) because modern humans is five colours (in order to run all the best humans ever printed) so it relies on lands like ancient ziggurat, unclaimed territory and cavern of souls to actually be able to cast it's spells, because of this a red spell that isn't a human is incredibly hard to cast
Modern is not as fast as you think it is.
I’m a little sad Ravnica wasn’t mentioned at all. Tajic, Blade of the Legion is my favorite humans from Ravnica
I accept that humans or more appropriate the humanoid creature body type is assumed to be more likely to survive across many plains, space, time, environments, based on are own fictional survival on earth. So imagining human development across the vastness of existence and reality, regardless of a source is not unconceptual.
If I remember correctly there was a story in a collection that stated that humans were spread across the multiverse because they initially were a slave race that the dragons took everywhere. I think the story was in the Dragons of Magic anthology, but I don't know how canon that story would be. It does give a pretty good explanation in my opinion though.
sooo, who there daddy is though?
Pretty likely that humans originated on one plane and were spread throughout the planes by pre-mending planeswalkers, as they were then able to transport other with them, without killing them or requiring assistance from some magical artifact, like the planar bridge.
Best humans: Soul Warden, Mother of Runes, Narset and Young Pyromancer.
Have you noticed that you are only a few decades and the color gray away from being the perfect general kudro cosplay ?
Or didn't you tell us that wotc let you secretly design a card ?
This also answers the question about the best mustache in mtg.
MaRo wrote about how early on, the development team was told not to make human tribal a thing. Many years later, Innistrad comes around and MaRo and Bill Rose decided it was the perfect time to make it relevant, and that they could: magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/human-history-2020-03-30
Najeela, the blade blossom is my favorite human ever printed, she is the reason I started playing competitive commander
No mention of kaalia? Heresy she’s my favourite commander and just magic card in general next to maybe liliana the last hope
All those samurai and ninja. For the love of Takeno, Umezawa, Higure
I think Rosewater had answered the human question before. Putting humans into nearly every set allows players to associate with the game by having a familiarity with some of the creatures
Regarding creature types would be interesting to explore dwarves and orcs, which while a staple in most fantasy settings, in mtg are quite rare.
I would say Kess, Dissident Mage is my favorite human, followed by Kaalia of the Vast.
My favorite human is Chandra. Yes, she's a Human and a Shaman, check Magic Origins.
I would love to see a the Ur-Human but more accurately it would have to be the Err-Human; since to err is human. But that means there could be the Arr-Pirate as well.
Hahaha yeah Humans to slow for Modern Right hahaha *shuffles Modern Humans deck nervously*
The quality of the videos is only getting better! Story time... amazing as usual!
Kazandu blademaster. my first game winning card. throw all 3 mirrordin swords on him and swing once, you win.
hey idk if anyone else did (and if they did, sorry for the spam on an older video) but g*psy is actually a slur against the romani and other traveller peoples. i understand thats what the card was called but. its still an important thing to know and keep in mind
