- Teferi is the face of Core Set 2021, but his story goes back to the 1996 set Mirage. Get caught up on the history of this "timeless" planeswalker as we continue the Flavor Win series!

I never really cared about Teferi, but the story of the Phyrexian Invasion where he attempts to save his homestead by phasing it out with the intention of bringing it back later and being unable to even after the threat was dealt with, man that's got to suck. Plus he's virtually immortal, so he's had a long time to think about what else he could have done while he looks across the Zhalfirin Void. The art and flavor text for that card is very haunting.
My idea of Teferi's Tutelege, given the flavor text, is that Teferi is so used to time magic and so used to doing things out of order that any in-depth explanation he gives is nearly impossible to comprehend, and most listeners will walk away more confused than they arrived. And the more knowledge Teferi accumulates (the more cards you draw) the more difficult to comprehend his explanations are (the more cards that are milled).
That just sounds like my old geometry prof...
Andrew over here being the most flavorful by slowing himself down to simulate the effects of Teferi
Honestly, the format you've come up with unique and engaging. No need to further hamstring yourself with budget. Super fun watching you justify each inclusion, love it.
I'm so happy when Ryan gets exited about the flavour win.
Such an optimistic guy that brings positive energies to the world.
When are we getting a Rin and Seri video? The most important characters of M21 deserve some time in the spotlight.
probably when wotc release any actual lore for them. we dont even know the plane they came from or a single shred of info about them. at this point his video would literally be hey its them the end!
@@d3ath18 I'm pretty sure they are from Ikoria, both of them look kind of similar too Kaheera, Especially the front-of-neck-sorta-mane.
@@GreatgoatonFire i cant find the exact post cause twitter is garbage but gavin from wotc confirmed that they are not and the only dog/hound was in commander 20 specifically because they didnt want hounds in ikoria's base set
@@d3ath18 I guess Cats AND Dogs living together on Ikoria would just have been to much power for one plane to take.
Still, thanks for the info.
Dog and cat how did they affect magic history only till then dogs were hounds
Oh man LeVar Burton is an amazing casting. I hadn't thought of that but it's so spot on
I'd love to hear more about Kaya, she ended up being one of my favourite characters in The Gathering Storm.
Kaya is definitely my favorite character on the Gatewatch rn. She’s really cool!
Baby gurl call me kaya
Don't forget that teferi also phased out most of Shiv, and he got it back during the time spiral block, also, can we have a video about Planar chaos, and why there are white counterspells. Thanks Ryan, also, Teferi was in the bubble for I think 40 years
@Fizz I love them so much, I made a whole color-break cube!!
@Fizz I agree
40 years, and wasn't he on fire or something?
I was so impressed with how well this deck handled all that life gain +++++++1s too lmao. First flavor win video but I love it. Now I gotta get on Arena.
Me in the beginning: "Okay. Very flavorful. How does it win?"
Me at the end: "AH. Okay. I'm impressed.
I like flavor wins but I think you should cover the characters whole history still . Personally I'd rather have two separate videos one for lore and one for deck themes but that's just me. Great content though can wait for Vensers episode .
Agreed. I like this channel for lore first. (And the personality) Gameplay second
The exact lethal was the cherry on top of the flavor win! I love it
don't you just love it when we get more great content
I love story time n_n phasing makes me smile
I'm not the biggest fan of this iteration of Teferi, but GOD, was that match great to watch! Good job on your Flavor Win, Ryan!
Hey Ryan,
How about a custom flavor win tournament witht the comunity?
Bo3 with extra points for best flavor.
I think nobody is making enough fun tournaments.
Ooooh I like this idea....
With a jury awarding flavor points to the decks ?
Yes please
I love this, I would be awful at it as a Spike but I would definitely participate just to see what others would do.
I love this series, the mix of lore and flavorful gameplay- so much fun!
who is Teferi and why is he overpowered?
As someone who plays commander and has a massive PTSD over mana drought, I have to say I felt my bones shake with how many lands you were discarting over Teferi's ability. That aside, that was fun to watch. Keep up the amazing job.
28:10 “don’t you count it at home” Me: *Starts sweating*
These are my favorite new vids from MA! Plz do Vito next, I'd love to get your take on the lore & lifegain-lifeloss madness that is M21 vampires
Love you, the series, and the stache! Keep it up!
Thanks for the storytime! I love hearing all the backstories of the cards in little bites like this.
Teferi, Time Raveler is definitely reminiscent of Djimon Hounsou.
Superb! The story told through the deck is great. Keep it up!
Yes do MORE. Love the story/deck/gameplay combo. Great job.
I really love how you build your deck with the lore in mind.
Lovin' the format, Ryan and Nicole!
Damn these videos are super fun! That tension at the end was real.
Again, Ryan I have got to hand it to you. This was a blast to watch! For a new player, like myself, listening to the history and flavor of the cards and then watching you flavor smack an opponent is like watching a comic book come to life!
Honestly, I love what you're doing with this! I'm relatively new to MTG (started almost 2 years ago), and I love both the story of the cards and the lore behind them, and you do such a great job explaining both. I like how you don't go into too much detail because it allows the rest of us to do our own research. And this new series also bridges the gap between mechanics and lore. Keep up the amazing work!
Oh man! Another?
Such a great way to start my day :)
Hot Damn, I bought the whole seat, but you kept me on the edge of it the whole time. I... man I f***ing love your videos.
Kudos on this particular deck. You really surprised me by not going straight for the obvious mill and this made for a very pleasant match. I literally thought you were going to lose it several times, even watching miss-plays that weren't really miss-plays. That Kraken. This was inspiring.
So happy about this. Teferi is one of my favorites both in terms of cards and his story
That gameplay was so exciting!! I had no idea that Magic's history followed Teferi since he was a child. Thank you for sharing the Magic story!
I really like this series, please keep them coming!
I love the format ! I don't necessarily watch all the games but I always enjoy story time, and I totally dig flavor-oriented decks !
That was one hell of a flavor win. Amazing stuff!
I love the animation for the extra turns. I enjoyed this video so much I viewed it 2 times.
That’s was incredible, I love the format of this video the decks seem fun and I think you are including the erect amount of cards since you still wanna try to win and I greatly enjoyed. Thank you.
this was so suspenseful, but i loved it! haha :D
was rooting for you the whole time!
Sometimes when you're feeling down, a good video helps a lot. This was just in Time.
To quote Jimmy Wong: "Math is for Blockers."
Golden rule: Never take into consideration the quotes of a soy boy.
I collected hundreds of magic cards many years before I knew how to play. Loved them as a kid. Sandbar Crocodile was my favorite card for ages.
These are fricken awesome, it's fun to see all the lore work in a game or at least interact well
I just love this segment!
I think that this video format is great, and I'm already excited to hear and see about Liliana, Chandra and Garruk. Side point: I would love to see you do a video where you explain and compare how old each of the important planeswalkers and other characters are, so that we can fully grasp what all of that really means for our understanding of the multiverse. Have a great day :D
One of the best Magic games I have ever seen! Hahaha
Almost enough to make me like Teferi.
And again, great content!
This format is very good!
That was awesome! Can't wait for more tasty decks.
This format is surprisingly entertaining
That was a brillaint match and video man! Feel bad for Teferi taking his own home out of existence
Love this stuff. Please keep it up.
Your really good , can't wait to see what's next
That was super fun. I love flavorful decks, it makes playing them like reading a story, a story that is a little different every time you read it, but when done right it always leads to the same end result.
Squirm with excitement...😂😉 Surprised you didn't edit that out.
Great win BTW 👍
Such amazing nostalgia,such iconic legend
Best time of Teferi? Back on Mirage cycle and back when he was a punk in school at the Academy!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Cool deck to!!!!!
This was an interesting video and that was an insane match!
Really enjoying these videos, please keep them coming!
Also, I did count the attack damage because YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!
It was worth a shot.
Fantastic stuff Ryan and Nicole more plz
Ok, that deck is actually really cool though. And I’m kind of really glad you did this fun flavor deck rather than the blue/white control deck I was expecting with 3feri.
Loving this series!
You should have brought up the fact that Zhalfir was actually going to help out the phyrexians during the invasion but Teferi knew it would still go poorly for them so he phased the entire kingdom out to stop them from making the mistake.
My bad, I was going based off of bad knowledge that someone else told me. Zhalfir was intended to take the brunt of the phyrexian invasion by Urza. Since Zhalfir was the most advanced nation on dominaria at the time, they believed they could handle the invasion and Teferi knew that going along with that would be a mistake so he phased out the kingdom along with some of shiv to spare them from the invasion.
Heeeeyyyyy I love this. I made a Niambi, Esteemed Speaker EDH deck. It's not the most powerful, but I definitely made sure to add lots of Teferi references and cards! Keep up the vorthos!
That was fun! Love the flavor wins format. It's how I build my commander decks anyway.
That was so sick! Once the strat started rolling it was ridiculous lol poor Andrew. Keep ‘em coming! Love this new series. P.S. I recently used Subira in my magic group’s kitchen table weekly thing and I loved her! She was the nail in the coffin for one of my matches. However, now knowing her hubby outlived her and she’s long gone has me sad. The Arcanum giveth, and taketh away.
I love the channel and you both bring us great content! That being said, I live near Portland and can't learn about anything else oppressive (as Teferi cards tend to be) today. I promise I'll watch in its entirety another time. But, frankly, we could use Teferi in Portland right now.
Excited for the Garruk video. My green baby boy is back!
*Scrolling around on UA-cam, sees Teferi* *zoom* I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED! Speak to me about Sad Clown Time Mage!!!! (Also learning new things in one interpretation could cause mill because you’re throwing old knowledge away to literally clear your mind to learn the new stuff. Or you mill your opponents using the knowledge you gained, literally playing mind games.) I think Teferi created Chromatic Orrery. The flavour text mentions that it was directly inspired by another plane (Ravnica). I just think that’s neat! Also, what you’re doing now is perfect. Keep at it!
I really hope I find u doing chandra some day. I think she is my all time favourite plains walker.
Great video. The new Teferi is very powerful, I would not be surprised if he becomes very expensive in the future.
Love these new flavor win episodes! I think the way you are doing them is perfect. Maybe next time we get one over Muxxus the Goblin Grande ;-)
I think the first "season" is just going to be the five mono-colored planeswalkers from M21 but if the series is well liked, I would consider doing episodes for other legendary characters like Muxus as well.
Nice win at the end
Really good game. Was awesome to watch that comeback 👌
I'll be honest, I've been excited for the day when you post a video about Teferi's history. Though I do enjoy the "flavor wins" series, I hate the fact that the history had the feeling of being rushed through and not having had an adequate amount of time spent on him for the amount of history (both in MTG and in real life cards sets) he is in
What is interesting about Teferi is that he faced Nicol Bolas before. He was defeated by him on Dominaria I believe and in the end was forced to make a deal with the Elder Dragon regarding the many time rifts that spawned on the plane (if I recall correctly). I really hope those stories will be covered one day as well :D
Your videos + coffee = great morning.
When he says 'don't you count it at home either' and you're like i counted on the opponents last turn though.
Love this series❤❤
Loved it!
Love the videos. Sorin would be my top pick for a future addition to this series.
Great video
This was sweet!
Hey! I've enjoyed your videos immensely, and I've always been curious about the character and history of Ob Nixilis. Seeing a video of that would be awesome! Obviously I understand the work load of maintaining a youtube channel, just something to think about :)
Really cool flavour deck. I really thought that white life gain had your number, but the power of Teferi's time manipulation and Ryan's mighty mustache proved otherwise. Awesome game!
Glad to know I’m not the only one who gives sass to my opponents for taking a few extra seconds to consider their plays
Great deck and info
I really appreciate your in depth look into different characters and what their abilities are capable of. Keep up the great videos
I love these, keep going! But could we get an in depth video about Teferi/ pre mending walkers?
great video
very nice flavor win :)
I sincerely preferred the format of your videos before. I hope that every now and then you will bring only comprehensive videos on the history of magic, as you once did. There would have been so much more to talk about Teferi.
Damn, that was a great game. I too did not know you had exactsies until after you attacked. I also didn't know Teferi was trapped in a bubble for 10 years, hahaha
I gotta say, out of the entire deck, somehow the Tolarian Kraken is the card that REALLY surpassed my expectations. Felt like some old school tempo control, and a very satisfying beatdown for the win -- nice game! (Also, I had long since counted out the lethal damage by the time you asked us not to. ;) Good thing he wasn't holding another Light of Hope!)
Making the opponent's entire board tap dance is pretty fun. I once won a game where I had 1 creature on the board (but it was a gigantic mutate pile), and the opponent had gone crazy wide with 30 creatures, but they couldn't attack at all for most of the game because I mutated a couple of Archipeligores onto the pile, so I could keep their entire board tapped down.
That. Win. Was. Freakin. AWESOME!
Teferi’s tutelage teaching the invalidity of some yet to be fully explored beliefs makes sense as a millingn mechanic. A vaguely held concept turning out as not to be expressing what you thought it was, and therefore losging it’s practical use could fit to milling. Unlike the cards at the hand which are realized ideas ready to be manifested by the wizard holding them, given enough power accrued by lands or other sources
Teferi is one of my favorite MTG characters, and definitively the favorite planeswalker. My first magic novels (and the first books I've read in english) were the Planar Chaos trilogy. As imagined i was very confused, but he (and Venser) were the characters that made me go through with it. Fun fact: as cards, both Venser and Teferi are in my most hated decks ever...
For the deck, the biggest flavor win was that Teferi took his time to win... XD
I’m enjoying these flavor wins
So good.
Love ur vids
Just want to jump in on an idea for the “flavor” of to Teferi’s Tutelage you could say as your opponent mills cards they are teaching you their spells or the spells they have learned.
