Tim, thanks for taking the time to review our watch and straps and for your straightforward feedback! Obviously, we have some differences of opinion on certain points (namely, the value proposition) but your review and criticisms are well-taken. The crown-wobble you highlighted is atypical, and we’ve already shared this video with our assembly team. For those in your audience looking for greater clarity on some of the points you’ve raised on the design we'd just like to say: the core goal of our dive watch series is to create a historically-grounded, daily wearer, well-suited for regular ocean use. The slim case, ergonomic sloping lugs, rounded edges, and functional 20ATM rating are all based around Ryan and my daily use in the Pacific Ocean. The X1 grade lume, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and caseback, and double-domed glass are all additional examples of function-first features. As I’m sure most of your viewers know, there are more affordable and more decorative options available in the $500 diver market - but ultimately, what we are working to optimize for is the best watch for continual ocean use, while still maintaining our commitment to American sourcing and assembly - which is something we care about, and helps distinguish our brand in a very crowded field. - Reagan, Co-Founder Vaer Watches
My only nit pick is the depth description. It should be in feet only (or meters only but it is an American watch). There is nobody that can afford this watch who does not understand both feet and meters. Getting clutter off dials is a good thing. In fact best would be to put the depth description on back. Ironic but having an Imperial Measurement only on the dial would now be regarded as a mild Americanism - in this case would be a good thing. PS my Vaer C5 arrived today. Happy with it.
I've been a fan of Vaer for sometime now, specifically the Arctic D7 or D5. I don't know why I continue to research these, as I will probably commit next month. I enjoy the way this one looks and wears, think its not outrageously priced (you can find it discounts on the web site). The bracelet is just adequate, the Horween leather strap great, and it looks good on a variety of Nato straps.
4:40 the wobble you reference has more to do with the stem and crown tube inside diameter. There also may not be an internal O ring gasket. I agree with your conclusion. Vaer watches are quite nice but a bit overpriced considered what they offer. The stainless steel bracelet is a real shame. That thin stamped clasp shell was a real eyesore.
Good day sir. As always, it is a pleasure to see another upload. I agree, I would pass. Did I see three colours of lume? And those hands look like vintage lume, not in a good way.
Its good looking diver actually, nice thing its the 2 coloured indexes on the bezel. This metal frame under the glass is visible in almost every watch under 1000$ so dont know what You find there
I quite like the aesthetic. It takes ᴍᴜᴄʜ inspiration from classic watches like the MOD Seamaster 300 & Certina DS PH200M from the mid 60's. However it also looks like a $200 Aliexpress watch that has been dressed in its Sunday best. The Miyota 9 series are really good entry level mov'ts - ᴀᴛ ʟᴇᴀsᴛ as good as the ETA / Selitta equivalent, but where is the crown tube?? That crown stem is ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟᴇᴛᴇʟʏ exposed when you engage it! That would worry me - a lot. Still; I want to applaud Vaer for not simply copying a beautiful vintage design, but rather paying homage to it - in the true sense of the word. It's a good watch, just not for me, especially for $500USD. That's the Swatch groups playground. Like it or not, they dominate the $500USD-ish market. Love the jacket Tim. Well done on another successful creative endeavour.
I find the watch to be fantastic for all the reasons that you said. I don't understand why you don't like it? Also, definitely great for the price point, value.
I agree with the review. Looks a bit rough construction - could be one for review purposes only, though. But my big question is - if they called it an "arctic" diver - what special features make it one?
We’re honestly surprised & flattered that there’s already replicas of our case design. Unfortunately, knockoffs are an integral part of the watch industry - and it really just comes down to the individual on what type of products they want to support and what type of brand’s they’re proud to wear on their wrist.
@@VaerWatches very important for me to support two guys in America trying to do the right thing! EveryOne wants things made in America but no one wants to pay for it. I own a D5 and it’s a great looking watch. For $500 I’m not sure you can find a better option out there while supporting as much American labor as possible. That comes at a cost and I was happy to pay it. Their new bracelet is also really nice. They made some very nice improvements.
I recently bought the DS5 Pacific and was pretty disappointed. To start with, I have smaller wrists so I bought the 38mm which was recommended for small-medium wrists, when I put it on, it just felt too small. It felt like I was wearing a woman's watch. Next, I ordered the upgraded premium steel bracelet. When I put it on the watch, the part of the band that meets the case had a pretty large and uneven gap. It looked terrible. I tried it on the other side as well just to confirm it was the band and it was 100% the band. That should've been caught by quality control. A cheap Timex or Nixon watch has better fitting bands and that's not saying much. The watch bezel clicks were tinsy and cheap sounding. They also didn't like up perfectly with the number markers. I have a Gevril Wallstreet that cost me $800 and the quality is far superior in every way from the band, movement and click of the bezel. Next, every time I moved the watch you could hear the rotor swinging around and it was loud, and not in a good way. My other automatics make barely any noise if any. Lastly, I was SO looking forward to wearing this DS5 Pacific, the design looks beautiful but it was a massive let down. And even with all of the flaws I thought, maybe this one was just a dud, I'll exchange it for the 42mm and give that one another chance, only to find out that you can't order the 42mm with a steel bracelet. What??? Why would it be available in the 38mm and not the 42mm? Makes absolutely no sense. I'm guessing to save on costs because the 42mm costs more to produce, but who cares, I'm the one paying extra for the premium steel bracelet anyways. So I went to call customer service and couldn't find a phone number ANYWHERE. Come to find out on their website, you have to email them and wait for a response. It even says on their website that they know this will be a nuance to some people and that they're working on getting a phone line for this in the future. You're telling me you sell many different models of watches costing up to $899 and I can't talk to anyone in customer service? I have to send them an email? That was enough for me. I returned the watch immediately which cost me $10. So I spent $10 to find out their watch isn't for me. I'm not trying to hate on their brand because I was pumped about their watches, but honestly it was a massive let down.
Th picture seemd good but when seeing the watch in detail during the video I'd say for the price it is a pretty much "colour by numbers" situation. You are right overall meh reaction particularly for the price. I think what they are really banking on is the whole "American made" thing so it relates to a specific market.
I quite like it, there's nothing offensive about it, tho there's nothing that grabs me- it's a little generic imho. "American assembled" on the dial is a bit off putting too if you aren't American too. Leather strap is a big turn off for me too - veggie since 1982. Love that's it's no date, & the fauxtina looks great too. Just lacks a bit of "oomph" for the price. Good review and good luck to the company. Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻
@@IDKline not what I mean - "made in America" = very expensive labour and therefore pricier without being any better quality. Tho I appreciate putting that on the dial makes it more appealing to the American market, just as Yema are more attractive to the French, Nomos to Germans and Christopher Ward are to Brits - bit of a generalisation but Americans are probably the most fanatically patriotic nation, so I get why they did it. Hope that makes sense. Cheers mate 👍🏻
Good review and while I personally love this watch, it's totally understandable that it may not be up your alley. There are some things though where credit is really due to Vaer on these pieces. For one, even though the watch measures at a little over 13mm thick (with domed crystal), it literally doesn't wear this way at all. The watch hugs your wrist and honestly feels more like a 11mm thick watch. Taking into consideration the fact that the double dome is quite high and it has the automatic movement (taking up more room on the back of the watch than your standard quartz), I think there is definitely a bravo due. Also, while you are correct that many other watches at this price point have similar features, build quality, etc., there is one thing I have yet to see on a $500 dive watch from any other manufacturer: twisted lugs! This subtle design on the case is eye catching and really makes the watch seem more sophisticated. I can not speak to the bracelet (as I ordered mine on the unlined horween leather) but this watch is a strap monster so I'm sure there are no shortages when it comes to strap options. Speaking of straps, I do disagree with you on the rubber tropic strap - this strap is nowhere like any other rubber strap I've felt from other offerings. The strap material is deceiving because on the under side of the strap where there are the perforations it feels very dense and almost like the leather lining you would find on the underside of many watch straps. Obviously it is not leather, but that is the best way I can describe it. I am not a fan of silicone or rubber straps typically, but I have no problem switching my D5 to the rubber strap if I am doing something that could possibly damage the horween leather strap. I personally really enjoy it, but again to each their own.
I think we ought to tread carefully with this jacket, as a wrong classification can cause offence. As I see it these jackets come in the following gradations 1) German Africa Corps 2) Stewart Grainger 3) Daktari 4) Roger Moore 5) Rolf Harris 6) Alan Partridge I think the star of the show should explain which of the above he had in mind and used for inspiration.
Roger Moore! But army jackets like the uniform of the Africa Corps were in fact role models for the Safari Jacket. You find them also on old images of British troops.
Thanks, but I'm ok with that. Michael Bedford is a dear viewer of the channel and I'm always happy to write about the jacket ;-) (Pretty proud of it. Made it without a pattern which normally goes wrong ...)
They have great advertising and I like the look of their watches. I like the difference in hour markers. I would hate spending money for a bezel that doesn’t line up. $500 sounds right for Japanese movements, but the details should be spot on. I’m pissed because I want to like them.
Beautiful safari jacket indeed. Is this the one you started tailoring yourself some months ago or is it available commercially? If so I would appreciate to know the brand.
@@CasebackWatches Not so easy. Your jacket is nicely cut and reminds me more of a 3-Roll-2 sports jacket than most safari jackets which follow a military tradition. I own a vintage PRL wax jacket which is cut similarly and which I absolutely love. Anyway, I think a lot of subscribers would appreciate more detail on this jacket in one of your next shows.
Have to agree with you. Nice watch but kinda boring and there are so many other options available in the $200-$500 price range. Good to see a 39mm diver though, especially coming out of the US.
@@jicalzad Zelos and Helm definitely, Phoibos has some very nice ones as well. I don’t own a Spinnaker so I can’t recommend personally but I hear good things. There really are a ton of options
@@whiteglovewatches9908 The Helm offerings i saw definitely look interesting. Thanks for the tip. I don't particularly like the aesthetic of the Zelos or Phoibos lines, although they do seem appropriately priced for what they offer.
Miyota 90 series are very satisfying movements. Better than most of Seiko 6r series in many aspects. High beat, more precise and even some of Miyota 90s can be modified as well as elaboré grade eta 2824-2/sw 200-1 and i liked the overall design of Vaer.
Keep showing stuff you aren't in love with, it adds variety. The slightly wobbly crown wouldn't bother me but I cant live with a leather strap. We are all different.
I was seeing their advertising all over. The watches looked sharp. I like the look and originality is not a hit with me. I have like 34 watches that one could argue all look the same. I like a similar look across brands for my collection. I was ready to buy one and saw this review. I put it on pause. I liked what the owners were doing and I went for the USA made D5. I wanted a USA made watch. I have enough swiss watches so that line of theirs had no appeal. It arrived two days ago and I gave myself time to digest. Out of the now 35 similar watches of this look category I rate this one in last place. It looks great and the rubber strap was very comfortable. The bezel and crown compare to $30 watches I got from India. I won't wear this watch. I would have gladly paid another $200 for a more quality built watch. It might be better quality than the feel but it has turned me off. I wish I stuck to not buying it after I watched your review. I did not even mention all the cheaper brands in that 35 that have better bezels and crowns. Glad to support a USA made watch in the end and hope they use the sales to improve the next wave.
A good, albeit a bit "vanilla" blend of vintage Omega and Rolex divers. But I agree, component-wise it comes across as a glorified AliExpress watch of their higher tier brands such as Cronos or San Martin. Not necessarily a bad thing, though. I think this is a solid choice for someone who isn't a diver aficionado, but who wants a solid beater in his collection. Grüße aus Siegburg!
I have the take on the bracelet. Bought a Vaer C3 “Tradition” on stainless. Their oyster link bracelet is just ok. Perfectly fine and reasonable for a ~$250 watch but nothing special, nothing extraordinary and nothing that belongs on a $500 watch.
Miyota with Vostok crown? It dosen't stand out, I have a feel there are a million micro brands out which make dive watches. The bracelet looks like Vostok too
I get it. But this Horween strap is very comfortable. Fortunately, the leather strap is a quick release strap, so I just swap it out with a quick release water strap when I am going to be in the water.
To be fair in relation to the stainless steel bracelet, any bracelet will flex like this when not attached to the actual watch. You’re the first I’ve seen actually critique a bracelet not attached! I like the aesthetics of this watch but yes there’s a few anomalies. Maybe the crown is from a Vostok?🤪🤣
İt's not exactly an exciting watch and there are so many Seiko or Miyota movement watches, in fact you could probably get similar quality with some Chinese brands at half the price, including ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal. I did hear somewhere that the wobbly crown is normal and is actually a feature to protect the stem.
I like dive watches in appropriate settings and wardrobe: summertime, hot, sweaty, greasy sun block, bug spray, shorts, jeans, t-shirt, etc. Come in out of the elements and simply run the thing under the faucet. But I agree that there are just too dang many divers on the market, and every design element has been fully wrung out. I'm also okay with the Safari Jacket (despite any PC connotations regarding colonialism and whatnot), and the outdoorsy explorer meme fits right in. What I can't figure out is how 'Arctic' got into the discussion.
It reminds me of an early Rolex sub and there is a Chinese company producing an homage of the early Rolex sub for a lot less money and it looks at least as good as this American watch..........................................
Good luck to VAER. I really hope they succeed in this ultra competitive business. Unsolicited advice; you have to separate VAER from other micro brands by constantly improving the quality of your watches but not increasing your price too much. Just banking on “assembled in the USA” won’t get you too far. You have to make sacrifices during your “early days” in order to survive and eventually succeed.
I totally agree it seems too much like they just grabbed random parts from several bins from Asian manufacturers then over priced it in a market where there are so many options at a better price point and the bracelet definitely made this piece a no sale for me but what do I know Thanks for all your great content 👍
I would have different feelings at a lower price point. I like the watch, but I feel it is over priced even with all of the great specs. It is just a little too generic.
Highly overpriced, period. The customer service is not to be recommended either. I contacted a rep over an email requesting a check-up on a solar diver I wanted to purchase just to see if I can request a solar quartz watch where the second-hand would at least line up as close to the markers. My request was denied, claiming that it's just normal for the second-hand to be off in hitting the markers. That's not been my experience with others.
‘includes paid promotion’ i’m like uh oh... Fortunately Tim is a total gangster and doesn’t give a F. Can’t say the same about the other shill masters out there, hellooooo.
Paid promotions? What's that?! Thanks for mentioning this because I didn't push that button, but now I've checked the video settings and in fact UA-cam did it. So little clarification: Vaer watches send the piece in and I already asked for the return form. As always.
yeah, doesn't do anything for me either. but then dive watches rarely do, I think you too Tim are more of a dress watch than dive watch person, am I correct? here's a divisive opinion - Dive watches just don't work for grown ups - i.e. people who have grown out of short trousers and 'witty' t-shirts (I don't care how hot it is, grow the f. up and wear big boys trousers!)
I wear more dress watches but discovered the diver genre and I enjoy it. I wear them in the warm season together with more casual jackets and enjoy them pretty much then.
It’s been done a million times .. something about it . Looks kind of cheap .i think people are starting to look for much more from micro brands now . In my opinion this hugely misses the mark ...
I prefer honesty. And this means to let the audience know, when I see problems with the product. The opposite you find as sponsored content without disclosure all over UA-cam. This goes so far that people now take it as lack of objectivity when a reviewer is not 100 percent positive all over the screen with a smile ...

I agree with your conclusion. Vaer watches are quite nice but a bit overpriced considered what they offer. The stainless steel bracelet is a real shame. That thin stamped clasp shell was a real eyesore.
Nobody complained about Rolex when they used to have a thin stamped clasp shell and charged $6,000.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 Between Rolex and Vaer, the only commonality is a 5 dollar bracelet (and Rolex fixed it). Only one of them sell cheap knockoffs.
Good day sir. As always, it is a pleasure to see another upload. I agree, I would pass. Did I see three colours of lume? And those hands look like vintage lume, not in a good way.
I like the watch. Though they could lower the price a bit or improve the quality of the watch to separate itself from other micro brands.
Spot on review. Looking forward to the Sinn which will for sure stay clear of the usual microbrand ingredients.
Its good looking diver actually, nice thing its the 2 coloured indexes on the bezel. This metal frame under the glass is visible in almost every watch under 1000$ so dont know what You find there
Nice looking diver 😄👍 but I like crown guards in case it hangs up on dive gear straps 😯 or fishing line 🎣
100% agree!
The guy has spent waaaaay too much time in his house in fear of the cold I just got over.
I like this watch - reminds me of the old Submariner. Good vid. Keep at it!
“The policy of the house” Honesty !
They just named the different watches after different American coastlines
This is likely built by Addiesdive, albeit with inferior movement, you can find its variant on Aliexpress
I've had many other watches. I like mine, and it's USA assembled.
@@stevefox8605 “American assembled” could imply that the assembly took place in Honduras or Bolivia, etc.
Nice to hear! I've one on order , I think this guy got out of the wrong side of the bed before doing this review!😁
@@shogun884 agreed! But it is a subjective matter of opinion, of which, I would disagree with his review on some aspects. Great value for the money!
I think we ought to tread carefully with this jacket, as a wrong classification can cause offence. As I see it these jackets come in the following gradations
1) German Africa Corps
2) Stewart Grainger
3) Daktari
4) Roger Moore
5) Rolf Harris
6) Alan Partridge
I think the star of the show should explain which of the above he had in mind and used for inspiration.
I feel the exact same way
Seems assemble is all they can do in the US these days...and being proud on it.
Beautiful safari jacket indeed. Is this the one you started tailoring yourself some months ago or is it available commercially? If so I would appreciate to know the brand.
Yes, that was a tailoring project. But I think if you google the term you may find a commercial version.
Iam wearing a watch with a Miyota 9039, my crown does not wobble.
Have to agree with you. Nice watch but kinda boring and there are so many other options available in the $200-$500 price range. Good to see a 39mm diver though, especially coming out of the US.
which ones would you think competes w/ this & has equal or better value?
@@jicalzad Zelos and Helm definitely, Phoibos has some very nice ones as well. I don’t own a Spinnaker so I can’t recommend personally but I hear good things. There really are a ton of options
@@whiteglovewatches9908 The Helm offerings i saw definitely look interesting. Thanks for the tip. I don't particularly like the aesthetic of the Zelos or Phoibos lines, although they do seem appropriately priced for what they offer.
@@jicalzad I have a Helm Komodo and highly recommend, only issue is having to wait but worth it
Well, at least it's not Submariner copy number 23.988. I have to give them that.
woo hyped for sinn! good video
I love your jacket, very well made sir.
Thank you!
Miyota 90 series are very satisfying movements. Better than most of Seiko 6r series in many aspects. High beat, more precise and even some of Miyota 90s can be modified as well as elaboré grade eta 2824-2/sw 200-1 and i liked the overall design of Vaer.
Do you think their new D7 line offers anything more than the D5?
Love the design especially without date
Love your channel Tim
Glad to hear that, thank you!
A soupcon of Blancpain?
If you get hung up on a bezel misaligned im surprised you recommend seiko XD
Thanks for your honesty. Love the content
Thanks for watching!
Keep showing stuff you aren't in love with, it adds variety. The slightly wobbly crown wouldn't bother me but I cant live with a leather strap. We are all different.
“American assembled” could imply that the assembly took place in Honduras or Bolivia, etc.
The bracelet looks like Vostok too
It's closer to an older Omega mil-Seamaster than a Submariner. I wish all of the indices were the trapezoids. I do like the design though.
Leather strap on a dive watch seems like a paradox to me.
I would always go for that San Martin Vintage Diver. ;)
"5" marker mis stamped runs over edge of bezel.? Vanilla watch.
I totally agree it seems too much like they just grabbed random parts from several bins from Asian manufacturers then over priced it in a market where there are so many options at a better price point and the bracelet definitely made this piece a no sale for me but what do I know Thanks for all your great content 👍
Looks a bit like an old Sub mil-spec.
I would have different feelings at a lower price point. I like the watch, but I feel it is over priced even with all of the great specs. It is just a little too generic.
Very nice watch imo!!!
I love the watch, but the bracelet is really so-so.
Always difficult to justify these watches when you have a Duro....
Seems very harsh to post that image as the thumbnail for thus video.
I really dislike fauxtina. That's a deal breaker for me.
I like the watch. It looks about as good as yours.
Looks like a milspec omega 300 with the case, sword hands and fauxtina. It's a homage in my opinion & I like it but wouldn't buy it
You’re wearing the watch too low …on your arm… and what’s with the ascot…???
‘includes paid promotion’ i’m like uh oh... Fortunately Tim is a total gangster and doesn’t give a F. Can’t say the same about the other shill masters out there, hellooooo.
Paid promotions? What's that?! Thanks for mentioning this because I didn't push that button, but now I've checked the video settings and in fact UA-cam did it.
So little clarification: Vaer watches send the piece in and I already asked for the return form. As always.
Yeh, first time i’ve seen it on you’re channel, but I’m glad I stuck around for the subversion. Really appreciate your reviews regardless 👍
yeah, doesn't do anything for me either. but then dive watches rarely do, I think you too Tim are more of a dress watch than dive watch person, am I correct? here's a divisive opinion - Dive watches just don't work for grown ups - i.e. people who have grown out of short trousers and 'witty' t-shirts (I don't care how hot it is, grow the f. up and wear big boys trousers!)
I wear more dress watches but discovered the diver genre and I enjoy it. I wear them in the warm season together with more casual jackets and enjoy them pretty much then.
Very sad, it dont have date
generic as it gets...
They are too high. Hence I didn't buy one. And they have designs I like.

It’s been done a million times .. something about it . Looks kind of cheap .i think people are starting to look for much more from micro brands now . In my opinion this hugely misses the mark ...
From the very start, you sounded biased as a reviewer. I’m sorry.
No Pearl at 12…pass.
Looks just average, like dozens of other vintage style divers out there. I definitely think it is is way overpriced especially with a Miyota movement.
