Sinn 103 A Sa B Pilot Chronograph Rediscovered. German Watch Review.

  • In this video I present you the German Sinn 103 A Sa B Pilot Chronograph as a robust middle tier tool watch. We speak about the measurements, the Valjoux 7750 movement, sapphire crystal, straps and bracelets. The watch is big but surprisingly sits nicely even on smaller wrists. The original retail price in 2015 was under 2000 Euro. Now it is available only on the used watch market, but it might be the search.

I think here in the UK Sinn and Damasko have a loyal following, not widely known by those not into watches, and personally I like wearing a watch that is under the radar. Nice review. Thanks. Tim.

A great looking watch! It looks like a watch that will still look great down the years, with maybe a few dings in it. It shouts 'tool watch' and has professional 'artisan' look about it.
    A watch for real men!

For me, the display of the day is one appointment too many on this and several other Sinn models which I otherwise find attractive. As it is, I happen to live approx. 20 mins drive from the Sinn HQ and outlet facility in Frankfurt, where, barring Covid, visitors can try on all the current models . Watch fans with a couple of hours to kill at Frankfurt Airport can take the bus there and overdose on the firm's proprietary design language in geek-friendly surroundings. A friend who served her apprenticeship at Sinn had only good things to say about the company. Definitely worth checking out.

As a professional pilot, I have to say that the Sinn 857 Utc Testaf Luftansa Cargo Ltd. Ed. I bought a couple of years ago is by far my favorite work watch! It perfectly fits my work needs as well as being incredibly easy to read. I have had Rolex, Omega, and others but for an honest-to-goodness pilot's watch, Sinn does it better (for me) than anyone else. My second favorite but the watch I wear almost every day is the Sinn 856 B-Uhr. Again, readability, style, the warm color of the tegimented steel, I am always wearing either the 856 or the 857.

Wow Tim, I'm hooked. What a beautiful looking watch!! My IWC Portofino Chronograph has a Valjoux 7750 movement, so if I accept it from IWC, I must accept it from Sinn!! That blue dial and bezel vs the stainless steel is perfect!!

Hello Tim !!! This episode is the first time I did not like your choice, I have held this watch in my hand, it does look very nice from the top, but soon as I put it on my 7-1/2” wrist it feels like I’m wearing a hockey puck, it’s way too thick. 🏄‍♂️🤙🏄‍♂️

I've got a bit of a crush on the 7750 atm.
I really enjoy looking at how various watchmakers deal with the depth of the mov't & I like how Sinn have simply 'mounted' the lugs relatively high on the case & angled them down aggressively. I imagine this aids stability by sinking the caseback into ones wrist?
I like it. It's not something I would buy, but I understand the appeal.
    Nice one Tim!

Also like the introduction to Sinn which clearly points out the different roots of the company. Those more interested in classic pilot watches may want to have a look at Guinand, a company in which Helmut Sinn was active after selling Sinn. Guinand-watches are considered to reflect the „true“ Sinn style of the 60s and 70s, often at a lower price point.

As a collector of some of their models. The Sinn 356 is probably one of their best chronographs. Sub 40mm not very thick and easy to read. The 556 is also very understated and can even be dressy if you get the model with applied markers. 104 is great in all aspects. While these watches have a rugged classyness too them, they all can get down to business and do anything and go anywhere. I love Sinn as a company. Damasko is nice as well but i enjoy Sinn a bit more.

Good afternnon Tim, great you have the Sinn 103 on your channel. Me personally I like the toolwatch character of Sinn. With many former toolwatch companies moving further and further into the luxury segment, I think it's good that Sinn are staying true to their line here. However, my next Sinn could also come from the line of Sinn's Finanplatzuhren (and be it just for the name of it :-) )

My experience with blue watches is that they always look at their best on steel bracelets. I have most of mine on Milanese mesh, but with such a massive chronograph a link bracelet looks better. Great watch.

    • @kitano67
      @kitano67 3 роки тому +2

Not only a matter of the looks but for this watch also of the weight balance. On a strap weight will shift to the top causing the watch to flip around especially when worn loosely. I did notice this even on my 104 which I originally bought on a strap. Now with a bracelet it wears extremely comfortable as if it was a completely different watch.

Excellent review which is to the point. Wouldn’t have thought that a massive watch like this wears that nice on a smaller wrist. Appreciate your comments on the bracelet which is often criticized especially for the clasp. I wear the same on a 104 and absolutely love it. As mentioned in a another comment the 104 is the way to go for those who don’t need the Chronograph function but appreciate a smaller height. Apart from the height the case dimensions and the overall design are more or less identical with many color variations available.

Hi Tim. Fascinating watch from Sinn. Beautiful colour and with a pretty rare countdown Bezel. It's more useful for diving timing than usual countup ones. Curious if they didn't took the bracelet to that side of the design cue and add a diving extension in the clasp. I think I saw something in the video but it was short and I'm not that sure. The humidity saturation is again a very useful gimmik for divers to know that all is good with their tool watch.
Overall I do agree with you it's a solid piece that looks reassuring on the wrist - kind of like a VW Passat: not luxury but sends a vibe of solidity ( hmmm maybe a car comparison isn't good - too polarizing subject for some people). All the best

The humidity indicator is brilliant. I'd love to be able to retrofit one to each watch. That or change the seals at regular intervals. One of those options is easier, I'm not sure which.
Q for the next Q&A: I have a champagne coloured pebro leather strap. It's looking a bit grey, and it wants cleaning. Do you have recommendations for cleaning light-coloured soft leather straps without darkening them, making them less supple, or loosening the edge coating?

I always liked this one. There was similar one that came a little later that had more faux patina (a bit too orange inho) and blue more saturated which I didn't like as much. The colors on this one in comparison is much nicer because more muted. The blue greyish NATO looks pretty good, but, the bracelet or a thicker leather strap of some sort might suit the weight of the watch head better.
