  • It took me forever to make this decision about which tune I wanted to run on Project MK7. I can honestly say that the best choice for me was Cobb which offers so many convient features that are useful to me in most situations!! In this video I explain why the Cobb Accessport was the best choice for Project MK7. But, I ended up having a huge fail at the end of this video!! Watch the video to find out!! Please give this video a thumbs up and don't forget to Subscribe!!!!! Enjoy the video!!!

    Simple facts are. Stage 1 or above with a manual needs an update with the clutch. DSG gearbox needs a remap after stage 1.

    Saw your car on I95 this past Saturday near New Rochelle I think, waved and then saw your UA-cam stickers, I was on the Red MK7 GTI. Looking good there , nice car.
    I'm on JB4 I was on JB1 beforehand my car is almost 3 years old with more than 15k on JB1/4 with no slip on my clutch, early build car, I'm sure that I'll need a new clutch down the road, I have my JB4 on the most aggressive map so it is just the matter of time. The stock clutch is not designed to handle all that torque and is not even the clutch itself but the pressure plate that is weak

Im trying to get the LED taillights for an affordable price and I'm very interested to see if you are on coilovers or springs. I do know you have spacers because you are on the stock wheels. Stay tuned for what happens next resolving the clutch issue it should be really good.

      JR14 hey, I'm on springs VWR to be specific, I have the ECS flush kit. My LED lights are from Ed's BEC Autoparts, I got them for 500 something I think but if you buy Helix brand ones the are good quality for about 400 or so from OPD auto parts, I can give you a hand installing them because the wire harness can be a pain. Good luck with the clutch

    I love stick shift but the reason I got my mk7 with dsg is because I've read countless stories on forums about how the stock clutch is very weak and can't handle even a stage 1 tune.

    • @SoliiD
      @SoliiD 7 років тому

      well its not "safe" to tune a dsg stage 1 without soms adjustments to..

    • @1gsrtom
      @1gsrtom 7 років тому +1

      Chesney Well the torque produced by the tune is what destroys a stock clutch , the DSG can handle torque but limits the amount of torque put to the ground at a certain point like anything more than 330 ft lbs. That's why u have a DSG tune to allow for more torque mainly to be put on the ground also adjusted shift points . But you won't destroy the DSG because of a tune it will be fine , but like in this video a stock clutch won't last long.

    Sucks about the clutch. The MK6 is no better when it comes holding up after being tuned. I saved up and went for the South Bend stage 2 daily driver and I love it. The shifts are much more confident and smooth engagement, also the chatter and other nasty noises from single mass flywheel conversions are pretty minimal. It really feels like the clutch that car SHOULD have had at the factory. I went all in with Cobb and installed the intake this past weekend and she's in the shop right now getting the turbo back put in to be ready to flash stage 2! Can't wait to get the call that she's ready!!

Making great power, but response one tubes fell off and updates from one map to another wants from a week to months for map updates. I couldn’t wait that long for results so I sold the AP and went unitronic stage 2 plus dsg tune. Very happy.

      The redline is raised once you tune the car. And crankwalk doesn’t occur by high revs of the car. It happens based on two thrust bearings being pushed out based on a heavier clutch.

    Cobbs ots maps are meant to be very specific. If the tune they make is stage 1 +, the intake they are tuned for is theirs. They are accounting for the extra air that remains inside the air box. No airbox means the tune is wrong for your car. Also any mods outside of the ots tunes parameters requires custom tune

      Yes there are two ways to ensure the elimination of the check engine light. 1. is to add an O2 sensor spacer on the aftermarket downpipe but this method is not guaranteed to eliminate the check engine light. 2. would be to refresh the car with a stage 2 tune.

    Where are you getting your numbers from? I am curious about how much boost the car runs stock because the boost gauge in the car is def not correct. It says I push well over 25 psi which I know can't be correct for a stock car. You mention that the car has 260 whp with the stock map. Idk where you got that number from because I am pretty sure they have 210 or 220 for the pp (probably crank) from factory. I dont know if you meant your tune now has 260 whp on the stage 1 map and 285 whp on the stage 1+ map. Really interested in hearing more about this and what you are going to do about the clutch. From all of my research it seems like the clutch is the weak point of these cars. But its still better than driving an auto all the time lol.

    @JR14 - What part are you using to make the turbo blow-off that audible from the interior? I'm looking to do the same thing, but from my understanding, VW have engineered the diverter valve so that it recycles some of the pressure and am weary that messing with it could create a loss in boost.

    • @JR14Channel
      @JR14Channel  5 років тому

      Well let me ask you this question in that Borla exhaust package, did you change the downpipe as well or is it just a catback? If you also changed the downpipe, then you would have to have a stage 2 tune so that you won't get a check engine light. If you just did a catback exhaust then you can stay at Stage 1 or Stage 1+

    Im in the same boat, I have a mk6 with the full cobb stage 2 package. It would slip the clutch slightly in 6th gear SOMETIMES when it was stage 1+, but now that im stage 2, it basically will slip 4th-6th gear. Not quite as bad as your clutch slip though.

    • @ebreiss
      @ebreiss 7 років тому

      If your car is tagged as TD1, you are fudged--no warranted repairs of the engine or transmission for you! If you flash it back, your risks MAY be lower.

    • @Caymanec
      @Caymanec 7 років тому

      Edward Reiss there is no sense to flash back: once you replaced ecu software vag scan tool will report td1 to vw!

    • @ebreiss
      @ebreiss 7 років тому

      I have heard that, and heard the opposite. Since I have never tried I cannot give an answer from my experience. How much is an ECU though? In that case, you could just swap out an ECU. (It is probably a lot of scratch.) Anyway, if your goal is to preserve the warranty, don't tune. :-)

      Yea I been debating whether too or not ever since I bought it. Funny but Deutsche Auto's 6M has over 325hp at the wheels & says he never had a clutch problem smh. • @lilfixor
      @lilfixor 7 років тому +1

      Steeler Guy 43 just throwing this out there but get the clutch upgrade first. saves you time and money. I went through two stock clutches already anything over 250 to 300 you're guaranteed to ruin the stock clutch. I'm currently on the stage 4 BFI clutch kit zero issues on is38 turbo upgrade with the eurodyne is38 file. it's very aggressive and you are guaranteed to get all that torque on the ground. plus allows you to break the clutch in before you start modding the hell out of your car. also look into upgrading the bleeder block. the stock one is junk!

    • @kawzx777
      @kawzx777 7 років тому

      Lilfixor thanx for the info. I can tell your one of the Big Dogs from your lists of mods lol..only if i had the cash I would go all out as well. Just ordered suspension parts Tuesday & saving up for clutch before power upgrades. Curious to know your labor costs for the clutch install?

    • @lilfixor
      @lilfixor 7 років тому

      stage 4 BFI clutch kit with the bleeder block was around $1,100 , then the hard part was trying to find somebody that would even touch my car in Colorado Springs. there is no shop that would touch mk7 modded out so I had to drive up to Aurora and I found a guy with his own shop. for labor only charged me $700 flat and had the car out within 24 hours. I would have done the install myself but it required taking out the subframe and did not have all the proper tools and time to do all that. VW was trying to charge me 3 grand, and would only do the stock clutch, not my BFI kit. mainly due to warranty reasons.

    • @HarassedWalrus
      @HarassedWalrus 7 років тому +1

      The stock clutch is realllllllly weak its kinda sad. Not Cobbs fault at all. Infact their tune is way less of a difference compared to something like a jb4 or a reflash like apr.

    • @DevonRegan
      @DevonRegan 7 років тому

      That may be, but I feel like tuners have a responsibility to tune to the limits of the car with something like a stage 1.

    • @HarassedWalrus
      @HarassedWalrus 7 років тому

      I guess yeah but they state that they dont know how long any part will last compared to stock. Getting tuned you understand that risk. Stock mk7s blow their clutch out all the time with people who track them. Also cobbs numbers are like +40 tq with all bolt ons vs like an apr reflash which is over +100tq.

    • @gibmebalut
      @gibmebalut 5 років тому

      The GTI throws a TD1 flag that specifically states the ECU has been flashed with third party software. vw, and almost every other car company for that matter, is not spending any money on developing manual transmissions anymore. almost all car companies are dumping tons of money on r&d for automatic transmissions. automatics are getting faster while manuals are really becoming a lost art. as a result car companies are dropping new more powerful engines in cars and strapping them to a parts bin manual that really hasn't been thought out because more than likely there is a faster automatic option

      I live in a small town. Minneapolis is 1.5 hrs away. If I go with APR. I have to go to Minneapolis to re-flash to factory before going in for service then back to Minneapolis to re-flash back to APR. If VW does a update for any reason it would wipe out my APR tune then back to Minneapolis. COBB lets me install myself and return to factory settings prior to dealer visits. Stage 1 COBB doesn't make as much power as APR but COBB does give me more freedom to do what I want.
