"Political dispute" do you call England having stolen territory from Argentina? You're wrong! And don't forget that the treasury of the profits from the port of the Río de La Plata was also stolen, in the first of the two English invasions (1806).
England vs Argentina is always a promise of good football. Both teams give their all and the spectacle is the favoured one. I am very sorry that England were knocked out of the 1974 World Cup in Germany, as they had a great team and excellent players. Greetings and respect from Argentina.
@@Lovelylove4everyone Lack of organisation and planning. The federation was run by corrupted muppets. Proof of that is that argentine local clubs were winning the continental and intercontinental trophies (Racing, Independiente, Estudiantes) but the national team was crap. Kempes' penalty was so properly struck to the corner that even if there was no net, the ball would have hit the inside support / post and come right back.
David Coleman makes a reference at the end to the rough tactics of the Argentinians/South Americans but English/British football was hardly clean either. Kempes was only 20 at the time, and not quite yet playing with Valencia. He had a lukewarm performance in WC74, but it was to be quite the springboard for his heroics at WC78.
Yes, I liked it when they'd say in those days, beautifully executed, well killed at 3:14 excellent shot, I was a kid back then and thought, they're ex ww2 military, it made the games like, us against them, it's f,kin war 🤣 👍
Not sure why the crowd were booing as it seemed a stonewall penalty to me thanks to crazy horse and yet another mistimed tackle that can't really be argued with. Interesting that Mario Kempes was in the Argentinian team and only the second cap for Brooking too. Several of this England team have unfortunately passed away now and a couple of names I had no idea had played for England (Alec Lindsay & Keith Weller) . RIP Frank Worthington - a true maverick.

@@@keithwellerlounge74 ...I agree with your point, Kempes was world class and knew what he was doing, but slightly changing the topic... if I remember correctly, poor old Chris Waddle received all the blame for England´s World Cup exit in 1990 (because he took the last penalty - which always sticks in everybody´s mind), whereas, as you correctly say, Pearce also missed his pen on that fateful night (hence the over-the top celebration as he exorcised his demons by scoring a pen against Spain in 1996 in the Euro championships).
Worthington's international career didn't survive the appointment of Don Revie. No real surprise - Revie did a superb job at Leeds, best club manager at top level in the 60s and 70s, but a bit lacking in the England job.
The last time I saw this was watching it on sports night in 1974! A few thoughts. Why didn't the FA give the job to joe mercer. Instead they brought in Revie who ballsed everything up. I remember clearly another England-Argentina match in 1980 when Maradona performed incredibly great, but even so England scored 3-1. I remember also an England Brazil in 81 when Brazil won 1-0, but suffered a tremendous pressure till the very end and was lucky to survive. The only match I recall the english were really outpaced and outplayed in Wembley was a 0-2 to Holland in 1977. That day Johan Cruyff comanded the play like I've never seen before and never saw again. Nowadays the english team seems to me to lack personality and class. Also, Wembley Stadium was an awesome temple of football and today is only another hypermodern boring and ordinary stadium.

+Philip Raiswell Can't agree with you more . We played far better football then , technically way better than today's standards . More passion , more confidence plus we had more strength in depth with good players who could come into the side .
I agree with most of that but sadly, the history books will tell you that it was also the "wilderness" years for the English national team. England didn't qualify for the finals of the WC in either '74 or 78 even though, ironically at the same time, English club sides were having the most successful period they've ever had in Europe.
True, but in those days only 16 teams qualified (one from each group) and England were drawn with two excellent sides in Poland (1974) and Italy (1978). Both those sides reached the last four and England were a match for both of them in the groups.

Exiting game for a friendly 👍I wonder if people still saw Argentina as the pantomime villains in 1974, years after the Ratin incident; in the same way that they were perceived after 1986.
No not as much, this was before the Falklands war which added a lot of needle and before Argentina had won the WC so they were just another”dirty” South American team then
Kempes and Keegan were world class players; Kempes and Argentina would win the World Cup in 1978, Keegan wouldn’t get his chance to play in a World Cup until 1982. RIP Frank Worthington, this being one of only two games for England (out of 8 caps) where he scored. His passing was announced today, Mar 23, 2021. Another piece of British football history passes to the big green field in the sky (after losing Peter Lorimer earlier this week too.)
I am surprised that England didn't qualify to '74 & '78 WCups. I was too young to remember this one but I remember the game in 1979 when they beat us 3-1. Great team. Maradona played incredibly that game also. It is a pleasure to watch those games now. And it was certainly more difficult to qualify to the World cup those days with only 16 teams.
what's funny about that penalty is there were two "fouls" - Hughes got tripped by his own teammate, which then led him to fall and scissor down Kempes. I think Hughes was frustrated by the fact he wasn't fully at fault. Right back is not where I'd have ever played him, btw.
3:14 Worthington, well killed not well controlled..... Probably also said well executed instead of excellent goal.... Commentator was probably in the military ww2.
They were playing at home, so they had the obligation of winning....What hurt them most that Arg reached the final draw when the match was almost over, and through a silly penalty. That hurt like a defeat.
Peter Shilton's non penalty saving technique of the 1990 World Cup clearly in evidence here. Only diving to his left once Kempes' shot is virtually in the net. Did he ever save a penalty?
Nothing controversial about that penalty - Hughes clearly took him down. Frankly with that, plus Shilton's shockingly poor goalkeeping that resulted in Kempes's goal, England gifted Argentina the draw. Performances of this quality are the reason why we failed to qualify for the World Cup that year. This period was roughly the beginning of our long, idiotic belief that the glory of 1966 meant we deserved to beat other teams. Thankfully, with our performance at the 2018 World Cup - with a young team clearly not bogged down with the ghosts of the past - we might just be starting to dig ourselves out of that hole. Here's hoping...
I noted someone wrote ‘criminal that Weller and Worthington weren’t awarded more caps.’ The answer was they played for an ‘unfashionable’ club at the time. Leicester had a good side then, Whitworth got a look in only, Shilton was just about established with England. The same followed years later; Lineker was only good enough on leaving City, as was Alan Smith, and latterly Chilwell and now Maddison. Heaven knows, if Vardy had left Leicester years ago, perhaps he would have challenged Kane’s England crown? It’s the establishment’s perception of ‘preferred’ players from ‘preferred’ clubs. Sadly this idea still exists.
Frankly doesn't realise how much he is LOVED, by so many, from Huddersfield to the end of the world he brought such happiness to a lot of people, oh, and really WELL DONE LECIESTER, BRILLIANT
Wow, the skills, athleticism and tactics of that time are almost embarrassing compared to today. Also, isn't this the announcer who did the famous Germany-Greece philosopher's game seen elsewhere on YT? ;-)
We'd not long had the Poland WC 1-1 draw and the fervour that engulfed that game, this was just the same. I don't know if it's just Dave's commentary 'lilt' here, but we seemed to fall into a black hole from 73' until we qualified for the '82 World cup. I often wonder if the sardonic splendour of England's footy squad wallowing in defeats contributed to everyone buggering off on strike in the mid-1970's.
My first visit to Wembley , with the school , as a starry eyed 16 year old . Pity they didn't show the half time fight between Emlyn Huges and a couple of Argentine players
We had great players back then but AFA and clubs didn't care about the national team. Only organizing WC in 78 put pressure on AFA to avoid ridicule at home. Just in 74 alone the national team had 3 managers! An absolute mess!
@@ga-ow7yf The Sir treatment is supposed to be delivered to someone who really deserves such title, not obviously the gangster that was coaching your team in 66. Just as a comparison, see our Marcelo Bielsa's gesture ordering his Leeds players to deliberately concede a goal to their opponents so as to balance the unlawful goal the ref had validated to them a minute earlier....Bielsa really deserves the Sir treatment.
Bravo!, England's failure to qualify for the 1974 and 1978 World Cup clouds the fact the teams of the 1970s (and the 1980s) were superior as teams and players...(it was much harder to qualify in the 1970s...

Eu amo Argentina 💙
Mario Kempes - El Matador
Teammate sticks a leg out but nowhere near touching Hughes.
When Wembley had atmosphere come to think of it when does any ground have atmosphere anymore? Old Trafford now is dreadful.
Not much atmosphere at any grounds atm !
All seaters: garbage!
Mencho Balbuena, No teníamos equipo. Así nos fue despues.
Argentina lo empató cuando quiso.
estaba que reventaba el estadio.
nice footage !!!!
3:14 Worthington, well killed not well controlled..... Probably also said well executed instead of excellent goal.... Commentator was probably in the military ww2.
Bit of a tragedy for England, this one. Judging by these highlights, they seem to have dominated the match.
I'm from Argentina but i agree. We only had Kempes, a legend. He saved us
They were playing at home, so they had the obligation of winning....What hurt them most that Arg reached the final draw when the match was almost over, and through a silly penalty. That hurt like a defeat.
Is Shelton..the goalkeper...the same Shelton of Maradona's Mexico 86??
Shilton ....sorry...
Yes it is the same Shilton
The year after looked like another era with the new Admiral kit. I had one.
Kempes Houseman great side
Peter Shilton's non penalty saving technique of the 1990 World Cup clearly in evidence here. Only diving to his left once Kempes' shot is virtually in the net. Did he ever save a penalty?
England had excellent players in the mid-70's but 16 teams only qualified for the WC so '74 &' 78 resulted in DNQ. Really tough.
@@kingkane1051unfairly eliminated???. How so??..Absolute Total Horseshit...They couldn't even qualify for both tournaments !!!.

Blatant penalty. Why are the English going mad about the decision? Penalty all day long, even in '74.
I realized in argentinian uniform i can t see AFA insignia. Was that normal in that time ?
They didn't have AFA badge until Adidas kit in '77 for world cup the following year.
ya jugaba peter shilton ??!! ..verdad había debutado en 1932 ...
no creo, porque incluso tapó en México 86.
Parejo para salir en 1974 y 1986......
Fuera de broma.. Jugó 20 años en la. Selección de Inglaterra... Toda una proeza
Here's hoping...
y cuál fué la controversia?
Kempes and ten more...
houseman, no lo podian parar los ingleses.,
Ignorance is bliss.
Keegan and Brooking in the pre-Admiral Kit
Mr David Coleman!! 🙏⚽🙏⚽
Frankly doesn't realise how much he is LOVED, by so many, from Huddersfield to the end of the world he brought such happiness to a lot of people, oh, and really WELL DONE LECIESTER, BRILLIANT
Stone wall pen, nothing controversial about it.
What was Hughes doing?
Wow, the skills, athleticism and tactics of that time are almost embarrassing compared to today.
Also, isn't this the announcer who did the famous Germany-Greece philosopher's game seen elsewhere on YT? ;-)
74
It was a clear foul, why do the English complain?
Shilton.... ya jugaba?????
Shilton was not great at saving penalties. Great commentary from David Coleman (RIP) he was and still the best British TV football commentator.
So weird to see Brooking with just his second cap not even over the ball for the free kick. Later on no one else would have been considered.
My first visit to Wembley , with the school , as a starry eyed 16 year old . Pity they didn't show the half time fight between Emlyn Huges and a couple of Argentine players
Because it never existed...!
RIP Frank Worthington and Colin Bell
Emlyn Hughes also long dead. Seemed a decent bloke.
Did Shilton ever save a penalty?
No
50 years ago!! ⚽⚽⚽
Emlyn Hughes being his usual agreeable self, I notice.
your disrespectul he was like me a great patriot [ its not a crime
Fantastic Match !
Just imagine an international fixture at Wembley with an actual atmosphere and people cared .
RIP Frank Worthington..
We had great players back then but AFA and clubs didn't care about the national team. Only organizing WC in 78 put pressure on AFA to avoid ridicule at home. Just in 74 alone the national team had 3 managers! An absolute mess!
Eight years later England and Argentina went to war. Argentina was truly demoralized for World Cup 1982. Greetings from Germany...🍺
A Inglaterra fez um boa copa em 1982
pretty sure the crowd were shouting Animals not England at the end.
Dirty Ramsay had prepared the local fans to do so...That s.o.b. was full of dirty tricks.
@@pedrolistacarey4880 ' Sir Alf ' to you muppet.
RIP Franky.
England animal, in the final game....
I didn't know about that match. Great quality of image. Good players and horrible fans (exactly the same if it was played in Argentina)
A far more talented England side than we have now - that team would have walked to the final.
Bravo!, England's failure to qualify for the 1974 and 1978 World Cup clouds the fact the teams of the 1970s (and the 1980s) were superior as teams and players...(it was much harder to qualify in the 1970s...
You've got to be joking, look at the England play in that game against Argentina,
it was workmanlke and pretty predictable. They wouldn't have lived with Holland nor 74 WC winners West Germany in the finals.
All long balls. 1950's football.
@@kailashpatel1706 Clarke was England's best finisher 70-74 and should've been given more than the 19 caps he got
That white shirt was awesome
This is going to be a semi if not the final of this coming 2018 WC
