When he came on against Argentina in the Mexico World Cup two years later Barnes was just as effective, but on that occasion he was inexplicably kept on the bench until it was too late. I liked Bobby Robson as England manager but he got it wrong not starting Barnes in that fateful match ...could have been so different.

That was because Bilardo was stubborn as hell. Passarella adviced him to include Clausen to prevent Barnes getting to the finish line and sending balls to the middle of the area; right after Lineker scored, Tapia crashed a ball to the right post; due to a great combinatuon between Maradona and Tapia.

I've often said if Barnes started ahead of Steve Hodge that day, England would have probably won. Barnes came on as a sub and destroyed Argentina's right hand side. Provided the assist for Lineker and then repeated the same thing only for linker to miss. Argentina couldn't handle him and were clinging on in the end. Bobby Robson never used barnes the way he should have. Those days black players were overlooked . It's a reality.

You have to remember in those days in football especially the fa there was a hell of a lot of prejudice.
When he did play for England in major tournaments he was constantly starved of the ball and then given the ball when a defender was practically on top of him. And let's face it the press had a lot to do with it.

England didn't get the best out of Barnes and other flair player of that time and remember the European ban stopped English players from gain that extra experience. Linker became a better player playing abroad which you could tell by his performance in Italia 90 and that Germany game.

@@Project5am Hoddle was another who didn't really get to shine with England like he should have. Matt Le Tissier is another.
I think with Barnes, Liverpool style got the best out of him and he was a world class talent. England managers like Bobby Robson and even his old Watford manager Graham Taylor, tried to fit him into their style rather then fixing the team around him to get the best out of him. That's why I think the fan's and press got on his back sadly, he's scoring over 30 goals a season for Liverpool and putting in top class performances and with England, you get the odd glimpse of it.
79 apps and 11 goals for someone as talented as him should have been a lot better.

@@stevecheevers7337 steve cheevers when he done his ACL in 1991 that was the end of him as that world class winger. That was a big blow for Taylor already losing Gazza that year too to that horrific injury. Liverpool fans saw Barnes in the next few seasons transform his game into a cultured central midfielder, England fans were still expecting the player who scored this incredible goal 9 years later.

Why do guys allow so many foreign players your league to the extent that its has such a very negative effect in your National team. You will never going to have a strong national team again. You might as well forget about wining the World Cup.

+Alfred Malam The most successful 1st Division clubs in Europe during the 70's and early 80's were Liverpool, Forest, Villa and Leeds. And all of these teams consisted of BRITISH players.(And all of the managers were English or Scottish) Only Steve Heighway and Bruce Grobelaar come to my mind who were not. That's one reason why England generally fail...too many key players in those clubs were mainly from Scotland, but also from Wales.(Dalglish, Lorimer, Souness,Gemmil, Hansen, Hughes etc) And now in the PL, which is only big business now, if you're English and get to play, consider yourself lucky. It's all divas now who have no loyalty to their club. I'm sure Forest or Liverpool or the best of both from the 70's, if they represented a UK team, (with Clough as manager) would have done as well as Germany has. But it seems it will just get worse. We don't invest enough into the youth.

    - it was a really weak Brazil team, a full strength team and itdve been a different story I’m certain ( with respect to England ), however it’s still a scalp for England and they did a job and did it well. I think Hateley was at Pompey at the time and got his move to AC Milan on the back of this game.
