The late Alan Ball was one of the columnists in the very popular football magazine "Shoot" which first appeared in 1969.Ball wrote in one of his columns about the clash with Scotland in the 1975 Home Championship match at Wembley. Sadly that match was to be Alan Ball's last game for England as he captained England to a 5-1 crushing defeat of the Scots.Ball quipped,"I was often on the losing side when I face the Scots but only once in 1967."
That Home Championship between Scotland and England at Hampden Park was the late Gordon Bank's last appearance for England. It was the late Alan Ball who scored the winning goal for England to give the visitors their first win over the home team since 1966.
Boon Yee The late Bobby Moore captained England that day... the late Paul Madeley and the late Emlyn Hughes were also playing for England (managed by the late Alf Ramsey). There was actually rather a lot of trouble between the Scotland and England fans at this match. Huge numbers of footie fans went to Hampden especially from places like Manchester, and particularly from the 'geordies' from Newcastle. The England fans also went into the jocks main end at Hampden , which was unheard of and raised a lot of eyebrows. Apparently the fighting continued for most of the match. For those that don't know, hooliganism by footie fans was rampant in those days.

This Game has reminded me of what football in Britain was like in the 70s, at first appearance it looks disjointed to modern eyes like the player lack skill with wayward passes, no one wanting the ball to driving through the midfield with said ball at their feet, but there is some else going on that camera doesn't pick up and that is fear. I played football in the 70s and 80s in the UK and let me tell you players didn't lack footballing skills no, it was a totally different game, and the name of the game was don't get caught. if you dwelt on the ball too long you got clattered, if you passed the ball and didn't move quickly enough after passing it you got clattered, if you didn't have eyes in the back of your head a player would kick through you at the ball like your legs weren't even an obstacle and all of this seemed to be legal if you complained to the ref his stock reply was "get up lad stop complaining, its a mans game"! The only real football was played in the last 20 minutes of games when the enforcers were too tired to tackle you.
Mystery man. The fans luved it pal & thats footy. Still you could have stopped, if you were a pro & got a dingy office job or washing dishes or getting shot at by the IRA like my mates & I. Fuck 'em. I sm BLOODY angry at them. Oh & whilst I am at it can Prince Harry pay back the £2.4 million he got from the taxpayers to decorate his former seven farm workers cottages. He isn't. The capacity was 134.000 at the time. 2 years before there was 136.000 at the Celtic v Leeds European semifinal. 149.000 in 1937 and 1939 with a guaranteed 20.000 at least going over the wall and bursting the exit doors down and flooding in. The design of the stadium at this time had been measured to hold 183.000. Capacity was cut back after the Burnden park disaster in 1948.

As for Scotland it didn't just end there yet.In February the following year England would win again in a centenary match marking the hundred years of the birth of the England FA this time with a thumping 5-0 score in an icy pitch at Hampden Park.
I was amazed that shortly after leaving Hampden, we bought a local paper and there was a full match report !!! could never figure out how they managed to do that.

armchair detective ....there's five little twats who kick a ball near my house. They all have goalie gloves, three have Barcelona strips and two with PSG strips. It's safe to say not one of those little snowflakes will ever get capped for Scotland. In fact, the first time any one of them get hit with a hard tackle, the football gear goes right in the bin.
68blues yeah, I’m on the other side of the world and around me they all wear Barcelona strips, Real Madrid and PSG. PSG FFS! They’ve won one UEFA Cup in mid 90’s (intertoto cup doesn’t count) so when did they become big time? I saw a kid a few months ago wearing a West Ham shirt and I nearly congratulated him! It’s all bloody marketing.
Yes what a coincidence.Goalkeeper Gordon Banks would play his last game for England at Hampden Park in May 1972 just like when he made his England debut for England against the same opponents at Wembley nine years earlier in a 2-1 defeat.
Who was scotish keeper ? Where did he play ? Why were rangers and celtic's keepers never choosen for national team ? Gordon Banks was really the best english goalkeeper (i saw the game in Germany in 1972). Strange that Francis Lee missed the game.
Bobby Clark, of Aberdeen, was 'keeper that day. Peter McCloy and Stuart Kennedy, both of Rangers, got caps in the 70s as did Ally Hunter of Celtic. Evan Williams, Celtic 'keeper at the time, certainly should have been capped too but was never picked.
Probably yes. Obstruction I believe it comes under. Calling for the ball when the opposition have the ball to hoodwink them into passing to you used to be a rule, is it a rule anymore? I’m not sure. Someone young will have to answer that question.
It was probably for calling for the ball but not giving his name - eg "my ball" or "leave it", "I got it". You have to give a name - such as "Colin's" or "Norman want's". The only exception is that Banks or Clark would have been allowed to shout "Keeper's" or "Keeper's ball"
Funny thing, as I now recall it playing junior football, instead of just wearing a shirt that fitted you regardless of number, the coach would say: “Machin you’re playing centre ‘alf” and throw me the number 5 shirt. And you’d get a fat kid at left back looking like a sausage in a number 3 shirt and a slight lad playing right wing in a two man tent with 7 on it. Crazy. By the end of my days playing ‘veterans’ the club just had a kit numbered 1-15 and everyone grabbed a shirt that fitted regardless. Does anyone recall if it was a rule, like in Rugby?
Hunter couldn’t get in the team at centre back as bobby Moore was there. He fitted in as the second ball winner in front of the back four alongside peter storey.
Frank Machin Ha, I liked those anecdotes. There wasn’t a rule concerning numbers, it was convention both nationally and internationally apart from squad numbers at tournaments. Johann Cruyff played with no.14 his whole career. However, I never saw other than 1-11 in a starting line-up before 1992 in League football in England or Scotland.

I was brought up looking forward to the Home Internationals, I really miss them, it was England who were the ones that objected to them claiming that it made the EFL season too long. So, it was scrapt. (Me? I'm English) But then again, not really sure that The Home Inters, had that much impulse for the present set up. Players retiring their International career, in favour of their clubs.

Also attended the Scottish cup final of that years between Celtic and Hibs which had an attendance of only 106,00! Stood on the north enclosure on two cans of McEwans beer supported by my old man.

Yes when they beat the English world champions
memories of bubble gum and footy cards watching these games with a pile of cheese sarnies curling in the heat and warm cola..ahh great days
back when i was very little in Canada, my dad did not watch north American football or hockey it was usually this or golf on our tv.
The late Billy Bremner was playing for Scotland... the commentator was the late Brian Moore and the summarizer was the late Jimmy Hill...bearing in mind this game was played almost fifty years ago!!😊😊🏟️
Andrew Kennaugh ...and Banks had a fine game... what a ‘keeper
@@andrewkennaugh1065 many of those top stars in that match have passed on.Bobby Moore,Alan Ball,Gordon Banks,Billy Bremner and many others. It is now 48 years to date nearly half a century ago.The late Sir Of Ramsey was still in charge but then the writing was on the wall. But that win against the Scots at Hampden Park was the more satisfying as the visitors had not won at Hampden Park since that famous narrow 4-3 win before the 1966 World Cup.
Sorry,I was being facetious...😁
When one refers to the 'late' Mr. So-and-so,it means someone who has died recently.Otherwise we would have to refer to all the dead billions as being late...
Alan Ball died in 2007...
Andrew Kennaugh I was reading ‘Macbeth’ by the late William Shakespeare.....😀
who remembers the good old fashioned Scottish square posts
ANTONY HOBBS I do. Happy days. Even the Scotland strip looked good. How far we have fallen.
I think they had them until the late 80s.
@@MrJonno85 If they were so great why do square posts not exist today.
@@PatrickKelly-lz3pv Because they weren't.
They don't exist because they don't create spin when the ball hits them. Example when a ball hits one post runs along the line and hits the other. Wouldn't happen with square posts.
134,000 let that sink in
119 000 attended....
@@servicecrew6813 Hi Shaun 'still a Fabulous attendance thou sir. These games were Fantastic and a nice follow up to the Leagues .The football from all 4 were to a high standard and very entertaining too. 60s n 70s very much Carpet football and the players were exstreamly Quick and concise too. Today the ball spends far to much time in the air now and players ego driven and think they are bigger than the club and No respect for the fans at all..Sadly the Home Internationals were stopped but I have the memories..Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
No seats in those days so you could pack them in tighter (pre-Hillsborough)...
134/119000 ...whatever the attendance it’s still superb . And that’s only paying customers . As was the norm in those days ( certainly in Scotland , not sure about England ) youngsters would have been lifted over , and thus not counted in the official attendance . Love the wee smile between Norman Hunter and Billy Bremner!
This was the last game that Gordon Banks played for England, he won his 73rd and final cap. Later that year his career ended after losing his right eye in a car crash !
Well maybe his England career. But I saw Gordie play for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL.
Terrible pitch, 100mph action, fierce rivalry, no diving, ah the good old days, what could be better?
Great football back then,no BS,scamming and histrionics like we see now!!
And I'm surprised both the BBC with"MOTD"and ITV"The Big match"don't have a channel showing all of these games!
.It w/b a education to the modern football fan!!
.And one small but important point for fans of today's so called "Modern game"u won't see silly Ass tricks or shots from ridiculous distances here, why?Because they're playing with a football which was the correct size&weight..Not this piece of crap they're using now, which flys all over the place, giving the impression that the game is so much faster!
A good percentage of these players are no longer with us. R.I.P.
So true Grace Smith quite a few of my heroes are sadly gone 😞
Great footage
Norman hunters tackle on bremner is a sending off now.
Can't remember seeing so many great players pass the ball so badly
Agreed. Compare England's passing in this match with what you see in their late 1960s matches. The contrast is depressing.
Bullshit mate - England fans didn't come in any numbers until the 80's

An exceptional match👍🙏🇬🇧
Great stuff!

Hoots! First time this Jock has seen this one since I was abroad in the Army '72 slogging my gaiters out in the Bahamas. Had a ball, unlike Scotland! Tho only highlights it looked a pulsating match in the Scotland England Wars. It was a full Hampden & enjoyed the internecine Club battles. Tough but fair. Ish. Luved the Hunter tackle on Clubmate Bremner. Played in great spirit by all. Yup enjoyed it even tho we got done over as per!

'Lash' known for his powerful shot recorded at 100mph was also a great passer and crosser of the ball a great member of Dons 11.
His shots from open play were up to 90mph. A penalty he took was recorded at 107mph.

England's defence looked really solid; all of them, including Banks really earned their corn on this day.
Bobby Moore seems to have done a lot of covering though (from these highlights). His quality shines through.
Proper tough footballers.
Ah, men playing football, happy days.
On duty 24/7. We played football to relax & get your ire out. If you played pro or amateur I salute you & thanks for the greatest game & football clubs in every city town village pub & work teams. My football died come 2000 & we have this greedy for money players managers in the top flight. As our NHS work their hearts out & people are hoping they have a job these pro players pocket their £100,000+ a week while they send home their club backroom staff on £12-15,000 a YEAR & let the Govt pick up the tab whilst they pay their greedy overpaid over here spoilt brats full wages. Fuck 'em. I sm BLOODY angry at them. Oh & whilst I am at it can Prince Harry pay back the £2.4 million he got from the taxpayers to decorate his former seven farm workers cottages. Our hospitals could make good use of it. His dad is a multi millionaire his Grandma a multi billionaire & we are paying for it. Every other pleb has to save borrow or do without. Not the Windsors. The Windsors never like paying for anything & they didnt want to send a precedence & have to pay for things like wot we do guvnor. Prince Harry says he "intends" to pay it back. Intends. Not WILL pay it back. He purposely said intends not will. Watch these words.
@@wildbill6826 I think you might have misread what I wrote Bill, or I might not have written it simply so you could understand that a was talking about football. Very true mate
It's a fact that because of the grave danger of being crippled if you dwelt on the ball
First time passing skills were developed as a necessity for your own safety and survival

That was a strong squad Scotland had. Back in the day when they qualified for the world cup finals. Saying that in jest 😁. England didn't qualify for 74 world cup. Every one forgets how good Alan Ball was and how hard he worked in the 66 final.

Graeme Souness said that Alan Ball was the one player he couldn’t catch with a cruncher.
This was the 1972 Home Championship match between England and Scotland at Hampden Park Glasgow with the former winning 1-0.The late Alan Ball scored the winner.

He isn't. The capacity was 134.000 at the time. 2 years before there was 136.000 at the Celtic v Leeds European semifinal. 149.000 in 1937 and 1939 with a guaranteed 20.000 at least going over the wall and bursting the exit doors down and flooding in. But Ball's winner was England's first at Hampden since England last won there winning 4-3 just before the 1966 World Cup finals.
As for Scotland it didn't just end there yet.In February the following year England would win again in a centenary match marking the hundred years of the birth of the England FA this time with a thumping 5-0 score in an icy pitch at Hampden Park.

Yes what a coincidence.Goalkeeper Gordon Banks would play his last game for England at Hampden Park in May 1972 just like when he made his England debut for England against the same opponents at Wembley nine years earlier in a 2-1 defeat.

Did Colin Bell give away a free kick for 'calling for the ball' ????
Probably yes. Obstruction I believe it comes under. Calling for the ball when the opposition have the ball to hoodwink them into passing to you used to be a rule, is it a rule anymore? I’m not sure. Someone young will have to answer that question.
It was probably for calling for the ball but not giving his name - eg "my ball" or "leave it", "I got it". You have to give a name - such as "Colin's" or "Norman want's". The only exception is that Banks or Clark would have been allowed to shout "Keeper's" or "Keeper's ball"
This was the era when your number to some extent signified your position so why was Norman Hunter wearing number 11?
He fitted in as the second ball winner in front of the back four alongside peter storey.
colin moss thnx - fairly brutal defensive midfield combination
Frank Machin Ha, I liked those anecdotes. There wasn’t a rule concerning numbers, it was convention both nationally and internationally apart from squad numbers at tournaments. Johann Cruyff played with no.14 his whole career. However, I never saw other than 1-11 in a starting line-up before 1992 in League football in England or Scotland.
