Gorillaz is 2 people. Damon Albarn does the music and Jamie Hewlett does the animation. when they tour they put screens on stage and project the animations on to them. when they tour they hire other musicians to fill in the other instruments for Damon. they are a completely unique "band".
To add to this, I would say they are truly the animated band with some persistent and some transient real world artists. They have a pseudo dread pirate Robert's element to them in that sense.
That screen tech has been used for other animated singers. Hatsune Miku concerts are done using this same thing..and man those concerts have a LOT of people in the audience. Nintendo did the same thing with the Squid Sisters Calie and Marie from Splatoon when they did a real world concert.
That is so cool. That idea is so cool that I think this is my absolute favorite band.
Gorillaz is just so ridiculously good
They were also the first band to hold two simultaneous concerts in two separate hemispheres of the world.
"On Melancholy Hill" is without a doubt my favorite song by them, a beautiful and relaxing musical experience

"Dare" and "19-2000" are two fun, upbeat sounds from them. Plus, you get two versions of Noodle's voice in your ears!
Was a big fan of this album. I liked every song. opposite to upbeat and fun was gravity. That song was dope.

You have to grow accustomed to how different it is from other things youve drank. M1A1 is another good one. We could probably have a multiple hour convo about how good this group really is lol. Some think the lyrics make no sense on the surface, but if you realllly pay attention, its deep af.
I agree with both songs... but the 19-2000 (Soul Child Remix) should be the one to listen to. Noodle is my favorite "member" of the band. She's a total badass.

Saw them live here in Sydney a few years ago. They were absolutely brillilant! And yes you're right, it's De La Soul. They actually came out and did a set and opened the show before coming back on with Gorillaz. The whole band was on the stage but in the dark with amazing visuals projected behind them. The lead singer is Damon Albarn from Blur. Great gig... ✌
If there's ever been one song by the Gorillaz that should definitely be heard at least once I would say that song is "Kids with Guns". It's one of my all time favorite songs to listen to by them.

The “main” guy in the band was also really successful with a band called Blur. They had a big rivalry with Oasis in the 90. Good band

I think there should definitely be some Blur reactions on here Although completely different the songwriting genius is still evident even in the slightly derided Country House that hit big in the UK. I still find it hilarious

Not sure of this is widely known or not, but for the benefit of people who may not; the track was originally called "There" but Shaun Ryder when he sang, made it sound like "Dare" so they changed the name.

Gorillaz music is really unique and it's hard to define them as a genre sometimes. If you wanna look at something interesting by them, you should listen to Saturn's Barz, November Has Come (No Music Video), or Dare (Crazy Different).

It's always fun to watch Gorillaz reactions. I hope there's more on the way.
Gorillaz are more of a collaborative concept band than anything else. They bring in musicians from all genres to add to or feature in. Each song is a unique creation. To see them further their image you should check out a live performance of their songs. They did a DVD back in the day from their Demon Dayz(2nd studio album) tour. They basically perform the entire album plus a few extra tracks (HONK KONG is amazing) live. And for every single song they bring out a guest singer, musicians, and even a choir to perform the music. It was an official recording so the sound is quality.

Gorillaz is so hard to describe to people because each song is different sometimes just stylistically and sometimes a completely different genre. Everybody has songs they love from them and if you played them side by side it wouldn't sound like the same band.

Damon Albarn who does all the music and is the lead vocalist was also the lead vocalist for the band Blur. Crazy talented guy.

Stylo is a vibe and GREAT video. Lyrics I'd say so-so but worth a watch.
First, this is my favorite Gorillas song. I would suggest "El Manana" as it's another favorite is mine.
As for this song, my take, without paying particularly close attention, has been that the song has two sides. The first is the verse part that has this dark, grimy, industrial feel. It's the "Feel Good, Inc." part, an industry that is marketing happiness. 'We can sell you happiness' sort of deal. That can be products or overly produced music or drugs. Of course, these things can't make you happy. The reverse is the chorus, where the singer is happy. He's not a consumer, he's just out in the world enjoying what life has to offer and making his own simple music. His music is clean and light and soothing... it's pure.
My interpretation is the cliche idea of the capitalist rat race. Maybe I'm way off base, but it's just the vibe I get.
The original live performances i saw on tv in the early 2000s thr band was playing in the shadows, but when i saw them live in 2018 the animations were on some of the big screens and the actual band was being displayed on some of the other screens. That was a special day
I love Gorillaz. It's a trip listening to old Blur songs bc u immediately realize it's Damon. There's one album they created in 31 or so days using sounds recorded from an ipad and other devices. Granted it was professionally mixed in a studio which people fail to mention
Lead singer Damon Albarn does perform live on tours and other places and originally was part of a music group called Blur, who was big rivals with the Brother duo Noel and Liam Gallagher's Oasis. And yes that was De la Soul.

A million times YES! The late Dennis Hopper had such an amazing and ominous voice on that track! Probably the track I listened to the most off of Demon Days. Or at least it was the reason I listened to the album all the way through to hear Fire Coming Out, and it being the 13th track speaks to how amazing the whole album is, even though Fire is basically just spoken word with a back beat...
There are so many great tracks to pick from with Gorillaz, so I hope you keep this journey going!

The guy behind the music is Damon Albarn. And he recruits artists from all different genres of music. A Gorillaz concert will have a giant screen with the animated band on it. And Damon will have a band onstage and bring out all the different guest.... You should check out "STYLO" FEAT Bobby Womack and Mos Def next

Gorillaz was definitely on alt rock radio when I grew up all the time. They are a great mix of rock and rap that helped build my taste in music
My favorite song from Gorillaz has always been Tomorrow Comes Today from their first album. However, November has come from Demon Dayz is also a great one and it has MF DOOM in it.
This song was part of a Music Video story that had I think five songs in total. At the end of this one you see helicopters chasing Noodle on the windmill floating Island, I can't remember the exact sequence of Videos but 'There/DARE', is next or the one previous to this. The concept of using cartoon versions of their individual portrayed band-member, was used to great effect on stage when they had huge mechanical versions of some of them move around. Loved Gorillaz from the moment I first heard them, even bought the CD's.
Please do Gorillaz - STYLO. It's incredible, but try not to get distracted by the music video!

I’d recommend the arts from Serg Tankian. That man’s got range and has done a lot of different styles of music and collaborated with damn near everyone to make a song or two, and his original works are equally phenomenal.

The first time I heard of Gorillaz I was traveling with the radio on and happened to be caller 10 to answer Toni Basil as the artist of "Micky". The guy from the radio said he didn't have a prize, but he'd find something. He gave me the Gorillaz CD they sent to his radio station. I became a fan by the time I got home.

Coincidentally Deltron3030 is the backbone for this entire album, Dan the Automater produced and engineered, Del the funky homosapien rapped, and Kid Koala scratched. Gorillaz was my son's first big stadium concert. It was super cool, you could see the band and the orchestra but it was screens of LEDs coming from the ceiling down to the floor and it was completely mind-blowing. Everything was animated. He'll always be able to say his first real concert was an animated band lol

Having seen Gorillaz in 2017 or 2018, they often have a stage covered in musicians due to the variety of music that they need to produce, with a large video screen above / behind the stage to present the animated band / videos.
Track was used in multiple movies, for example "Big short" - this is why this can sound familiar.
during the first concerts they tried to keep it very secretive. They would used use screens to show the animations, you can search those lives. But, some of the recent years the original creators have gone a little bit further by actually Damon Albarn taking the stage during presentations. Damon Albarn the singer or 2-D, and Jamie Hewlett is the one in charge of the animation. Damon, mostly plays instruments too. When there are concerts, now there are collaborators playing with them, equally as the others singers too. There are some live performance of some of their songs at BRIT. You can find those clips on their site almost at the very bottom since those are kinda old. Gorillaz after all is just turned 20 years old.

Feel Good Inc. is my favorite Gorillaz song. I remember when thi song came out in 2005. I heard it on an "alternative" radio station, and I just had to buy the CD Demon Dayz. I like their style and enjoyed listening to the Demon Dayz all the way thru.

Gorillaz is a commentary by Albarn & Hewlet on the mass produced music groups of the time. There was a lot of these manufactured bands and they decided to take it to the next level and completely fabricate not just a band but people and backstories. Which is fantastic.
This went right up the Alternative charts before hitting mainstream radio. Dr LA Soul is in this too. Good catch.
