The whole point of Gorillaz as a project was to allow Damon Albarn, to collaborate with any artist he wanted to regardless of genre and just make music. It lets him expose his favorite performers to whole new audiences and let's them experiment outside their regular lanes. It's genius.
Very well put, that saved me trying to explain. 😉👍🏻 The only thing I would add is that Damon Albarn was lead singer for the group, Blur, from the 90’s onwards.
Is there a reason why they never really use the featuring artists in the titles if they want to expose them? Genuinly curious. My guess would be the gorrilaz is more like a movement project where every artist is part of them and also every song would be just gorrilaz feat. ... would be weird.
Yeah basically this; by using virtual bandmembers instead of having public celebrity personas allows them to shed the 'image' portion of the business completely. It's quite smart, and teaming with Hewlett to actually create a whole storyline to share with the fans is just a great touch.
Still blows my mind that Bobby Womack only did this because his granddaughter told him that Gorillaz was the best band ever. Imagine getting that kind of powerhouse out of retirement.
"Sounds like a 70's soul singer." It is: Bobby Womack. Dude was a legend for decades. "Across 110th Street" might make a good listen some time, or his cover of California Dreamin'.
Bobby Womack’s album “The bravest man in the universe” created together with Damon Albarn is a work of art. I particularly love the track “stupid” especially if preceded by the “stupid Introlude” Gil Scott-Heron. And okay, I admit it, it’s been my ringtone ever since the album came out.
The order of music videos from their "Plastic Beach" album goes like this: "Stylo" --- "Melancholy Hill" --- "Rhinestone Eyes" --- "Broken" and then 2 non album tracks that are connected "Doncamatic" and "Do Ya Thing" which features Andre 3000. The final music video related to Plastic Beach just came out last year "The Lost Chord" featuring Leee John. All of these tracks should be checked out.

There's a base group of musicians who also contribute to vocals, but other well known artists (from a variety of genres) are rotated in & out--that's why all the songs sound a little different. They absolutely are telling a story. Gorillaz has lore behind many of their songs. They even have some small animations that transition between songs and albums.

Mos Def co-wrote this song with Damon. What you can appreciate with Gorillaz is Damon and Jamie Hewlett (make sure not to forget him as he is the co-founder of the project) is their willingness to genre-break, and I feel with that, there is something is there for everyone to like. Also, I've seen them live twice, one in an outdoor venue and one in an indoor venue, and the production values of both shows were unreal. Damon is a born showman. I don't know how he didn't pass out after his performance, and he manage to come back out to an encore.
I love Gorillaz and I'm super happy that you got around to Stylo!! One of their newest songs that I've fallen in love with is called "In the Valley of the Pagans" featuring Beck, which seems like a natural collaboration.
I love watching you put the pieces together of the gorillaz music. The songs on each album definitely go together as a full story. I always loved Empire Ants featuring Little Dragon and Rhinestone Eyes from the Plastic Beach album.

Yeah the album plastic beach with this and one of the other songs you listened too(Melancholy hill) are part of a story they did throughout the music videos that all interconnect. The song “rhinestone eyes” and “Borken “ other parts of that story and worth checking out too
I'm not usually so huge on eclectic quality within bands myself - not that I don't appreciate a band doing different things, but just that it seldom turns out to my own personal taste, to be an improvement on what otherwise might be a solid exploration of a more fixed style. So the sheer scattershot tendancy of this band was sure to not always grab me as I begin, via reaction videos, hearing what their stuff is like beyond just the famous singles. Gotta say, this is the first one that's grabbed me like some of their singles have though. Such a strong vibe to it. Brilliant song!
Best Gorillaz Song - so groovy and still smooth! Saw them live - it’s such and outstanding and creative sound! It has a reason why Bruce Willis wanted to be in a Gorillaz video!
The Gorillaz are a collab group centered around Daimon Albarn from Blur. Stylo features Mos Def and Bobby Womack. This is from the album Plastic Beach and this song takes place directly before Melancholy Hill in the timeline of the music videos. The introduction to the album is Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach. The next song in music video timeline order after Melancholy Hill is Doncamatic, which I think is another good song by them.
What most folks have said is true, there are narratives going through each album and sometime between albums. You mentioned before that you liked "Feel Good Inc". If you remember that has their character Noodles alone on a floating island with a windmill. The video finishes with several helicopters flying towards it. The next part of the story is found in "El Manana". Again very different in musical style to Feel Good Inc. But worth a viewing to get the way the connective tissue and narrative works. Also I believe the end of "El Manana" actually leads into "Stylio" and explains what is going on with the Noodles character in that video. After that rather than moving further forward I would recommend going back and filling in some of the gaps of songs from the earlier albums you have skipped over. They also did some non-musical short videos too which can be informative to help understand the collective narrative of each album and some are amusing too. Lastly they did a live performance with Madonna, at an awards show in which she appears to interact with them which is worth watching just for that alone.
There's a video called Journey to Plastic Beach where Murdoc explains what happens from where El Manana leaves off. Includes Stylo and On Melancholy Hill.
I'm so excited you did this one...I also still recommend Lake Zurich, Strobe Lite, Sound Check (Gravity), Re-Hash, Souk Eye, and Kansas. You've taken the dive into Gorillaz but not the deep dive yet....
Gorillaz collaborates with a wide variety of other artists. It's part of what keeps them evolving as the decades come. Mos Def is in fact featured on this track, you're not mistaken. The other voice you're hearing is Bobby Womack.
You're definitely going down the Gorillaz rabbit hole and love it. I discovered them around maybe 2005 at an airport before a flight, I just liked the album art, and have listened to them ever since. On that flight my particularly favorite track on the album was "Gravity". Idk what to say about the track, was just a whole vibe to escape with.
not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but i know you're rocking heavy with the Gorillaz.. they got their name because a group of gorillas is call a "band"
It's actually a play on "The Monkees", a band "manufactured" to play off the success of The Beatles. Gorillaz is also "manufactured" but in a different way. Monkees, Gorillaz.
Damn there are like dozens of versions explaining why they're named that, now that im thinking about it lol Some say that its because damon was attacked by a gorilla in a zoo as a child, some say its because the protagonist of Jamie's comic Tank Girl was killed by a gorilla in the last issue, some say it's a play on guerilha, some say the characters themselves looked designed after gorillas(which really seems true). So many gorillas
2people in the group, one does the artwork so the one that sings features a wide variety of different artists collaborating with him so it makes each song unique.
There is a story line between demon days and the now now albums and there might be one in song machine but basically the songs aren’t always in order with the story’s (some times they are) and you have to figure it out
gorillaz is a collaborative project between a musician and an animator. the musician is from the band blur. the project is musically genre-bending and features artists from across the music scene
You've kinda got it figured out. It is 2 people. One that writes all the music, regardless of how it sounds, and one that draws them. The one that writes also voices the 2D character which you've heard in all the songs. He's a creative genius. They then bring in different people to collaborate on songs.. like the rappers in certain songs, which makes them sound even more different. It's kind of like one big musical experiment where you can do anything and are just behind animations.
There is a pretty large iceberg when it comes to the concept of the Gorillaz that you sort of inadvertently hit upon near the end of this video. Because you're absolutely right: There *is* an overarching storyline to the songs. And it *was* Mos Def doing the rapping parts of the song (the other guest artist on the track was Bobby Womack). If you'd like a little more Mos Def and Gorillaz, may I suggest off the same album (Plastic Beach) the track "Sweepstakes"? I would go further to recommend that this is one of those situations where you probably SHOULD listen to the live version. While Mos Def does act as a carnival barker in the song, inviting potential players to play his game, his energy is much more palpable live. And I feel you'll thoroughly enjoy the layering of all the different instruments as the song slowly descends into cacophony.
They put out a live album a while back that was really cool. The main band remained behind a screen so you only saw a silhouette of them playing. Then the guest vocalist for each song would come out and do their thing while the animated personalities were projected above. This was before the whole hologram thing, so I’d love to see what they could do now.
It's crazy the amount of lore they put into the band as a story that connects through videos. Damon Albarn is the master of bringing in whoever fits the song for the groove to fit perfectly.
I think you'd be interested in learning about the band's history/lore. You should react to a video covering that. It will kind of give you a bigger picture of the narrative (mind you, each album kind of has it's own narrative going on).
Yeah man, there is no such thing as a "normal" Gorillaz tune. Every Album and Song has it's very own feel to it. You should check out the remixes soon. I'm fan since I heard Clint Eastwood the first time.
One way the people who collaborate with Gorillaz, the crew, and the fans, refer to the whole project is as FAMILY and if you are ever lucky enough to see them live, you'll feel this in abundance. It's a beautiful thing
Gorillaz is a virtual band by blur frontman Damon albarn, it's a way for him to express himself musically and explore different genres along with working with different kinds of artists. Jamie Hewlett is the one who is in charge of the look of the band, ie the stylistic design of each music video like 3d or 2d.
The Gorillaz is legit a one man band (Damon Albarn the lead singer of Blur) featuring a bunch of diff artists. Its is regarded as possibly the only virtual band, and they dont follow a code or certain genre. A group of gorillas in the wild life is called a band so hence Gorillaz (or band) are their OWN genre.
Yes! The characters have a story and their music videos tell it, you just have to order them or you can react to their story, there are people who tell it
Ohh this was so cool! I would definitely want to see you react to more, at this point you could click on any song from them and its a bop. I'd recommend ANY of the animated stuff, though :)
Mrlboyd, if you want to hear yet another genre in Gorillaz’s bag, I strongly recommend Latin Simone. It features Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club. Since you live in Spain I imagine you can follow the spanish lyrics and break them down for the people. If I knew how to use Patreon I would definitely pay for you to listen to it, but really please check it out.
One thing I've always loved about Gorillaz is that they refuse to be defined by a single genre. And yes, a big part of that is that Damon Albarn, the co-creator and singing voice for 2-D, collaborates with other artists on pretty much every song.
The idea of what Gorillaz is, shares a lot of DNA with labels like The Alan Parsons Project. Every album is a concept album, and every song is a collaboration with different artists, all tied together by a through-line of core collaborators.
I’m about to pass out but before I do I’d recommend looking into the different phases or chapters of Gorillaz. It lays out the story of each band member and what the music video compilations are narrating.
The whole point of Gorillaz as a project was to allow Damon Albarn, to collaborate with any artist he wanted to regardless of genre and just make music. It lets him expose his favorite performers to whole new audiences and let's them experiment outside their regular lanes. It's genius.

One way the people who collaborate with Gorillaz, the crew, and the fans, refer to the whole project is as FAMILY and if you are ever lucky enough to see them live, you'll feel this in abundance. It's a beautiful thing
It's a rabbit hole that will blow your mind!
Also yes. It's a story through every video and a video game
Tomorrow Comes Today is off their earlier stuff and still to the day one of my favs
A group of gorillas in the wild life is called a band so hence Gorillaz (or band) are their OWN genre.
nailed it. MOS DEF. plus bobby womack.
Yes!
The characters have a story and their music videos tell it, you just have to order them or you can react to their story, there are people who tell it
It's the Mighty Mos Def rapping and Bobby Womack singing at the end.
Ohh this was so cool! I would definitely want to see you react to more, at this point you could click on any song from them and its a bop. I'd recommend ANY of the animated stuff, though :)
All the songs are connected
Gorillaz is a story in each song that you can discover
You may like them for a single song or the song's style, but you'll LOVE them cause they still drop absolute bangers every time.
He was in blur another great band you gotta check them out
Mrlboyd, if you want to hear yet another genre in Gorillaz’s bag, I strongly recommend Latin Simone. It features Ibrahim Ferrer of Buena Vista Social Club. Since you live in Spain I imagine you can follow the spanish lyrics and break them down for the people.
If I knew how to use Patreon I would definitely pay for you to listen to it, but really please check it out.
Rhinestone eyes! Its their best track.
it is mos def! good ear my man!
hes getting it guys, its all coming together.
Thank You! Finally
All I can say is that they have a story line
Yes, there's actually a sequence to the Gorillaz videos that tells an entire story. You have to see them in a specific order to understand the story.
Fire coming out of the monkeys head is my favorite Gorillaz song, give it listen. Denis hopper is the main vocalist on it.
8:14 this part here reminds me of another song-
yeah, cuz your listening to them out of order............
I’m about to pass out but before I do I’d recommend looking into the different phases or chapters of Gorillaz. It lays out the story of each band member and what the music video compilations are narrating.
yay, finally. love this one :D
The groove of this track is catchy ....
Thank you for reaction.
