To be fair, I would hesitate to say 'steadily' when referring to their work. Truth is, Damon and Jamie had a huge falling out a decade-ish (maybe not precisely, but close) ago. They didn't talk to each other for a good, long while, and I believe there was even an interview where Damon said the Gorillaz were dead. This was around 2012. It wasn't until they reconciled that they released Humanz, because the two decided to fix their working relationship. That aside... Being able to recover from differences like that should be something of note.
The rapper on this track is Del tha Funkee Homosapien from the legendary group Hieroglyphics. Gorillaz have a lot of features. Check out the song by them called Ascension feat. Vince Staples. The live version at “Life is Beautiful” festival is amazing. Other features include Schoolboy Q, De La Soul, Mos Def, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Shaun Ryder, etc.
Fun little fact about this video in particular: When Del whispers “It’s all in your head,” it only can be heard with headphones, through speakers it’s just silence. Idk how they pulled that off but it was always so cool
If I remember correctly, the purpose of the animated characters were because Damon didn't want real people and their personas to detract from the music but still wanted someone for the audience to engage with. The genres are blends of different ones and change from song to song. I remember something about Damon saying that he noticed that a lot of the youth at the time were largely separated into genres as far as their tastes for music went and he didn't like this. A lot of the youth didn't explore different kinds of music (old or new) so he wanted to create music that had somewhat of a mix of pop elements from genres like electronic, rock, hip hop, country etc. But blend them in a way that it would expose the audience to different elements of other genres and hopefully open their minds to different kinds of music. That was the base of what Gorillaz as a "band" and project was meant to be.
Also I recall there being a desire to be able to switch the real musicians out who played the animated ones to give the albums a specific sound. Basically Gorillaz could be anyone and everyone as needed. You even hear little hints of that concept in this song--Del is both there and not--you don't see with your eye, you perceive with your mind. When you look at the screen it's Del the ghost, but that isn't who is _really_ rapping--that's just a drawing.

I've been a fan for almost 20 years now, practically from their start. I'm just now learning there's an ACTUAL STORY to the whole thing! It's an INSANE story and I love it!
This takes me back, Gorillaz is incredibly hard to explain in just one genre, they are all over the place. Even in some of the live versions they will switch up and change the verses. Your gonna get a lot of Feel Good, Inc in the comments but for me 19-2000 and Dare have to stand out as my favorites from this group.
The Gorillaz are an animated band (fictional?) The creator was the lead singer of the band Blur, and for a lot of the songs it’s collaborative with multiple other artists. There are tons of great songs from them; definitely a great band to get into. And there are a lot of Clint Eastwood references in the lyrics, mostly movie titles that he stars in.
My favorite track by Gorillaz is "Fire Coming Out of The Monkey's Head" that is more a story set to music about a village of people invaded by mysterious soldiers who anger the mountain they live on. It's a wild ride and an amazing work of poetry
Thats one of my favorite songs as well! I'd probably say Clint Eastwood is #1 and Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head is #2. I had no idea it was Dennis Hopper! How could I not know that after all these years??
The creation of the Gorillaz was a masterpiece. This group is like a laboratory which different musicians can use to do something completely different as they do in their normal identity. Great to see that you take this wild trip in universe of gorillaz songs.
I grew up listening to pretty much anything and everything due to the influence of my parents. They exposed me to all kinds of music and I’m incredibly appreciative for that. Even though they’re both gone now, I still carry that with me. That being said, I remember when this cd came out someone that my dad worked with burned a copy of it and sent it home with my dad to give to me. I immediately fell in love and have been a huge fan ever since.
What's cool about Gorillaz is that the band was created to tell a story. Each character grows and gets fleshed out through each album. For example, Russell, who's featured in the lyrics, is the drummer and he channels the ghosts of dead rappers for bars in their songs, which explains why they feature different artists on different albums and songs. Also the lyrics by Del the Funky Homosapien are in character; they're from the perspective of a ghost summoned by Russell during the video.
Gorillaz is so good. Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head, Stylo, On Melancholy Hill are all fantastic. Listening to Demon Days as a whole is a very special experience as well, I recommend you check it out.
It's definitely interesting to see an international group of artists making music together. British band with an American rapper from Oakland. I love their first album. It's damn near perfect.
This is the song that got me on Del the Funky Homosapien. Any of his solo stuff or what he did with the Hieroglyphics is pretty much spectacular. Smart dude.
Gorillaz is a childhood nostalgia band for me! So many good songs and they are all "Strange" or "Weird" but in a good way. The concept of the virtual band is also really cool! There are some great live concerts where they have the characters as "Holograms" that are worth checking out!

Feel good inc is definitely a must watch for the band. Fun fact, the song got its name because of the instrument they use to create that old school western sound you hear mixed in that was famously used in Clint Eastwood western films.
This song is named after the famous Western movie actor. The theme from Eastwood's movie The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly can be heard periodically throughout the song.
There's actually a story behind the characters who represent the band. And it's actually kinda interesting. I'd suggest looking it up if you have the free time.
The lead singer is the guy from the 90s band Blur. Del the Funky Homosapien is the guest rapper on this track. But they play their own instruments and rap themselves as well. They work with De La Sol on a track on their second album and it kills! They are awesome!

"Feel good, inc" & "Shoe shine" next!!!! La! Cannot tell you how much I love this band! My stepson turned me into them a decade ago when I was in my late 30 s....I still absolutely love them!!! So, with deepest respect, go deeper, you won't be disappointed!
The songs name comes from the start of the song as you said it sounded spaghetti western than band thought so to so they called the song Clint Eastwood. The Mc is Del the Funky Homosapien who is just a guests for this song and he is also Ice Cubes cousin
Fun fact the rapper on this track Del the funky Homosapien a.k.a. ice cubes cousin released his best album Deltron 3030 literally the day after this this song was released March 5, 2001 and his album was released March 6, 2001
Gorillaz really can't be explained by any one music genre they cross back and forth through hip hop rock and even at times pop. Also you missed the dance moves from Michael Jackson's thriller done by the zombie gorillas. One other thing the rapper is Del the Funky Homosapien who happens to be the cousin of the rapper Ice Cube. Great song that is just one of a great volume of work. Another great one is feel good inc.
First time seeing a video from this channel. I’m interested in how you’re not only trying to place this on a timeline, but also that you’re so interested in the mental aspect of this song. Keep up the good work.
I feel like I'm in the minority (or just old) bc I still think of Blur as Damon Albarn's "main" band and Gorillaz as a "side project"- mostly bc that's how they were described initially.
@@ScientificallyStupid I've definitely heard more Gorillaz, but Song 2 was cool & I had the same Mickey Mouse shirt he wore in the video. Neat artist thought, hard to put him in a specific genre & he's accent persists in his singing voice.
I find it extremely hard to believe no one has ever heard this song before. especially living in the western world. But hey, reaction videos and saying you never heard the song before is the new trend, so trend on dude.
They mix so much in their music with visual work they work with a lot of different performers man you know they just fantastic continue checking out the albums and all the rest of their work you'll love it
Gorillas are definitely a vibe my man, as everyone else has said, they don't really have a genre, they have a song for every type of mood you could be in
I'm glad he did this on first. Because that's how we all heard it right? And then it was like You just could never predict to what was gonna happen with the rest of it... It's such a crazy first song to go with. When you think about it it's great you know
I was huge into the Gorillaz back in the day, they hit my radar with Dare and I followed them up through Plastic Beach and Stylo, then lost track of them. I think it's great that you reversed the footage of the MV and it made it look like 2-D was singing into your microphone.
Gorillaz have so much individuality and uniqueness to every one of their works and songs and there's so much to delve deep into with all the different sounds
What’s funny is I found this channel looking up reactions to this song, and got hooked on your videos for your other reactions but you never did this song. Now you did it, and this is what I was looking for in the beginning. Meta shit.
You’re right on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly song reference. There’s also a connection to sunshine in a bag from the movie where his bags are full of gold and he says “I got a bag of sunshine”, but others obviously try to connect it to drugs as people do that can’t see anything else.
One of my personal favorites is the song 19-2000 (SoulChild Remix) and Superfast Jellyfish but others to listen to have to be Dirty Harry, Plastic Beach, and Feel Good Inc. for some of there earlier biggest hits. They have some newer works out too and of those my favorites are Humility (the comeback song after a very long break), Tranz, and Pink Phantom. Also the band itself has some very interesting lore and history behind it that you may find generally interesting. Love the reactions btw!
Coolest thing was back in 2006 at the Grammys when the Gorilla performed "live" on stage. It was absolutely amazing. This tech needs to be brought back.
4:45 they are doing something really crazy here to place the voice within your head, you cannot hear it if you only have one side of your headphones on, it only works with both
God, I remember when this came out and blew my little 12-year-old mind. I'm so glad they've stuck around as a project, this was a formative moment in my development in terms of music taste and every new thing they do is fun to see.
The Clint Eastwood reference is from “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” Eastwood says “ Sunshine in a bag” referring to gold in a saddle bag. The vibe is a preset, electronic, that Albarn thought sounded much like the western soundtrack melody. Actually pretty cool, unique and the. Band is prolific.
You're definitely going to get a ton of recommendations to watch "Feel Good Inc," which is a great one, but I'm hoping you'll see "Stylo" before long. It's the first song of their Plastic Beach era storyline... and yes, the Gorillaz have had story arcs over the years. "Stylo" directly continues into "Melancholy Hill," and after that... the official video for "Rhinestone Eyes" never got past the storyboard phase, but after 6 years of effort, a fan completed it. And it's awesome.
Yes!!! I can't wait for you to hear more of them 😍 gorillaz are unique as it comes! They blew up instantly when they hit the scene and I still jamm to their tunes regularly. I'd love to see your reaction to feel good 😁
Totally here for Gorillaz. No skip albums and amazing music. Taking members from different genres creates an awesome mix. The features like Del, De La Soul, Mos Def, and others keep the hip hop authentic.
I am a long time Gorillaz fan...my oldest at 25 remembers growing up with the CD in the house. I love that every song is different, unique and memorable. I recommend Rock the House, Lake Zurich, Stylo, Tomorrow Comes Today, Hollywood (ft. Snoop Dogg) and 19-2000 there are so many....
The harmonica and background bites were inspired from the Spaghetti western movies, especially "The Good, Bad, and the Ugly". The chorus section was a parody of "Saddlebag of Sunshine". The apes were dancing Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
Gorillaz has a hybrid sound. They blend alternative, hip-hop and techno, along with otherstyles depending on the song, and every song is different. A few suggestions for their songs, 19=2000, feel good inc, fire coming out of the monkey's head, stylo.
The name of the song reference is two fold. It's partly for the instrument you can hear playing in the background. They thought it reminded them of a Clint Eastwood song from one of his movies. The other reference is more obscure. They recorded the album in Jamaica, and one of the reggae artists they listened to while down there went by the name Clint Eastwood. Some of the song lyrics are direct references to Clint Eastwood movies though.
Absolutely can't wait for more Gorillaz, every song is different in many ways, entertaining, weird, addictive.

"Feel good, inc" & "Shoe shine" next!!!! La! Cannot tell you how much I love this band! My stepson turned me into them a decade ago when I was in my late 30 s....I still absolutely love them!!! So, with deepest respect, go deeper, you won't be disappointed!
Gorillaz is quite unique. they showed up at just the right time too make it as musicians
The songs name comes from the start of the song as you said it sounded spaghetti western than band thought so to so they called the song Clint Eastwood.
The Mc is Del the Funky Homosapien who is just a guests for this song and he is also Ice Cubes cousin
Approaching 900M plays on youtube at this point on this track alone, Gorillaz have some of the best music to just chill and smoke to.
Try the track Feel Good Inc. if you are a fan of the animation style they use...
Del the Funky Homosapien is the guy rapping. He's been around since super early 90's and probably was already doing it years before that.
This is gonna be fun, vicariously getting a second first impression of this awesomeness. Who's gonna tell him about Blur - Song 2?
I feel like I'm in the minority (or just old) bc I still think of Blur as Damon Albarn's "main" band and Gorillaz as a "side project"- mostly bc that's how they were described initially.
@@ScientificallyStupid I've definitely heard more Gorillaz, but Song 2 was cool & I had the same Mickey Mouse shirt he wore in the video. Neat artist thought, hard to put him in a specific genre & he's accent persists in his singing voice.
@@ScientificallyStupid most folk in the U.K. would probably associate Damon with Blur considering how influential they were in the Britpop movement
Del fit this song perfectly. One of this songs that open you up to a whole new world of Gorillas. Definitely worth a deep dive.
I find it extremely hard to believe no one has ever heard this song before. especially living in the western world. But hey, reaction videos and saying you never heard the song before is the new trend, so trend on dude.
They mix so much in their music with visual work they work with a lot of different performers man you know they just fantastic continue checking out the albums and all the rest of their work you'll love it
Gorillas are definitely a vibe my man, as everyone else has said, they don't really have a genre, they have a song for every type of mood you could be in
Gorillaz as a group is such an interesting concept
I'm glad he did this on first. Because that's how we all heard it right? And then it was like You just could never predict to what was gonna happen with the rest of it... It's such a crazy first song to go with. When you think about it it's great you know
My favorite band, was cool to see you react but also crazy to think someone hasn't heard of them!
The song and lyrics make more sense when you understand what "sunshine in a bag" refers to ;)
What’s funny is I found this channel looking up reactions to this song, and got hooked on your videos for your other reactions but you never did this song.
My son's first big stadium concert! He'll always be able to say his first concert was seeing an animated band, live.
Del has been my favorite rapper for years. Mad talented!
I love how the opacity on the music video sometimes looks like 2-D is singing into LBoyd's microphone
Coolest thing was back in 2006 at the Grammys when the Gorilla performed "live" on stage. It was absolutely amazing. This tech needs to be brought back.
Dare and Feel Good Inc are worth a listen. Their whole discography is so unique.
Wow. what a callback hearing clint eastwood again. this is my favorite song from the gorillaz on their debut album.
I love that the singer sings into your mic.
4:45 they are doing something really crazy here to place the voice within your head, you cannot hear it if you only have one side of your headphones on, it only works with both
I'm amazed a music head like you does not know Gorillaz. They're phenomenal. Can't wait to see more from them here.
you cant be series man ive been listening to these guys since i was 22 now im 37 years old i go back to them from time to time
God, I remember when this came out and blew my little 12-year-old mind. I'm so glad they've stuck around as a project, this was a formative moment in my development in terms of music taste and every new thing they do is fun to see.
Ok now you got me binging all my old favorite Gorillaz songs in preperation for the gold to come
The album version has like - a full 2 minutes or so of JUST beats at the end of the song - I love when bands do that :D
Sunshine in a bag is a line from an old Eastwood movie. "Watcha got in the bag mister? Sunshine kid" (something like that)
Oh man. You're onto Gorillaz. So much good music by these folks.
The Clint Eastwood reference is from “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” Eastwood says “ Sunshine in a bag” referring to gold in a saddle bag. The vibe is a preset, electronic, that Albarn thought
sounded much like the western soundtrack melody.
One of the Biggest influences in my life this band. 💞💞💞🤟🤟
Really hope you do more Gorillaz. Each song is an experience, can't go wrong no matter what you pick.
Yes!!! I can't wait for you to hear more of them 😍 gorillaz are unique as it comes! They blew up instantly when they hit the scene and I still jamm to their tunes regularly.
I'd love to see your reaction to feel good 😁
legit one of my favorite bands. saw them in person Boston a couple years ago. glad youre adding more and more amazing artists to your reservoir
Totally here for Gorillaz. No skip albums and amazing music. Taking members from different genres creates an awesome mix. The features like Del, De La Soul, Mos Def, and others keep the hip hop authentic.
It absolutely blows my mind that this is the first your hearing this song. I been banging the Gorillaz since the 2000s. Im 31
I LOVE Gorillaz, please do more of them @MrLboyd Reacts
They have so many good tracks. This song was released back in early 2000
Gorillaz has a hybrid sound. They blend alternative, hip-hop and techno, along with otherstyles depending on the song, and every song is different.
A few suggestions for their songs, 19=2000, feel good inc, fire coming out of the monkey's head, stylo.
3:17 there's also the six-shooter bass beats. saunter out of the saloon into the street with the harmonica and then settle matters
