At 17:10, the tool size to remove and install the spark plugs is a 14mm, 12 point socket.

Omg the amount of things to remove to get to the spark plugs is insane, bmw really doesn't want you working on your own car, their engine packaging engineers are insane.
My previous car, solstice gxp with 2.0L turbo with direct injection, here were the steps to remove the plugs
    1. remove plastic engine cover
    2. disconnect connectors on coils
    3. undo one screw on each coil
    4. pull coil
    5. unscrew spark plug
5 minute job, same for pulling the valve cover, 5 minute job
I might regret buying the new m3 😂

Oh please, I did my plugs in 2h. It's absolutely worth the performance you get from an engine basically midmounted almost behind your dash. Don't be dramatic, be patient and stop whining.

@@Salpeteroxid Mid mounted? Please, the middle of the engine is right across the shocks, on the solstice the 3 rear cylinders are also behind the shocks centerline. Maybe its mid mounted compared to an audi which puts it up front because they don't want to run a diff to the front wheels so they run the axles from the transmission.

Just got an M4 convertible, beautiful vehicle but the only thing really accessible to maintain is the oil filter. Why owners need to remove engine bracing simply to replace an engine air filter is beyond silly. I appreciate your thorough step by step instructions and assisting DIYs like myself. My only suggestion is modifying the video with a safety note. When dealing with electricity, make sure to disconnect the battery located in the trunk. Similar to your other tip, block the locking mechanism in the trunk with a shop rag, so that you avoid shutting the trunk without power...just sharing a lessons learned, pretty easy to access the trunk with a convertible, couldn't imagine doing it with non-convertibles. Keep up the great work! As a fyi - in Seattle, Washington a BMW spark plug replacement is $1500 in 2024.

The people in the comments not understanding the parts that are in the way are there for performance while also praising the performance of the car is mind boggling, like what?! 🤨

Agreed with following comment as it is a special purpose socket and no regular of any size will fit the OEM plugs. Right in the middle of doing mine I had to bum one off my mechanic - other than that excellent instructions and an easy DIY. You do need to have a pretty good assortment of tools though 😃

Hello, very useful video, thanks for sharing👍First I want to ask you about the spark plug temperature. You mentioned that NGK is one step colder then the stock spark plugs. I find out that this NGK has number 8 and the origin Bosch M spark plug number 5. If I understood well it seems that NGK is 3 steps colder than the OEM spark plug. Please can you explain how to read these information/codes?
The second question is about the gap. You mentioned that because of the one step colder NGK you have to reduce the gap from 0,8 to 0,56 mm. It meaans that there is some "formula" how to adjust the gap if I use colder spark plugs? Or is it the result of your personal experience with S55 engine and the level of tuning which was on this exact car done?
Thank you very much for your reply.
    Richard

A well deserving video considering the complexity of the engine bay design. Unfortunately for an engineering freak like BMW, they churned out such a maintenance unfriendly design. Half a day just to remove things before touching the plugs. THey probably have a dedicated dept just designing brace bars for their cars. Layers of plastics to prevent heat from escaping. No wonder their cars predominantly have loads of heat related issues. I wonder how much the dealership charge for a job like this.

I don't get what's so special about those two bolts that they need to be torque to yield. And I hate torque to yield hardware. Imagine you torque them down and then you realized you forgot something and you need to remove them. Now you need two extra.
