Did plugs and coils when I first picked up my previously owned F80 last year. Fairly easy job, just time consuming to take everything off before you finally get to the plugs. Thanks for the video, Tommy!
I’m going to be replacing the plugs in my F80 soon. And by that, I mean taking the car to Active Autowerke so they can do it while I get some work done.
Tommy, FYI if you are going to use a torque wrench at such a relatively low torque, do not HOLD the head of the wrench. This will lower the torque by you affecting the force on the head. I always spin the plugs and caliper bolds backwards so I do not cross thread! Good DIY!
Great tutorial! Thanks! Also, I've never seen spark plugs come out rusty looking after 5k miles. Doesn't seem normal to me. but I guess it didn't hurt.
Thank you man! Im getting drivetrain malfunction and it’s been to the dealership whom I purchased the car from multiple times and they cant fix the car at all so im taking matters into my own hands now. I have charge pipes coming in the mail soon and im now gonna order new coil packs and sparkplugs
Pretend you know what you're looking at...PERFECT!! Okay, BMW charges a ton to change a set of plugs...and I kind of see why. Probably charging 5 hours of labor. One of the best DIY's I've seen! U still bees da man!
Have been following your channel since before I got my F83 M4. I appreciate all your videos, however wanted to highlight something. I used the link in your description to buy the spark plug thin wall socket. Shame on me I bought it without looking at the details and as it turned out the link points to the 16mm socket and not the 14mm which is the one for the S55 motor. I only realized after I had opened up the car and now it is still in that state while I wait for the 14mm socket to arrive. Not sure where the disconnect happened, but suggest updating the link. Cheers
I ordered my M4 2 weeks ago and thought seeing your channel and others would help me to do self maintenance. Sadly NO!. I'm getting the 4 yr extended maint program. I'm just not into all that part removal et al. However, I have learned tons from you and learned lots. So now I will subscribe as I anticipate I will learn loads more in the future.
you can do it without removing that plastic cowling on top of the cylinder 6 and also without removing the aluminum cross brace, just need the right arrangement of sockets and extensions :)
My BMW dealer "allegedly" done my major service yesterday and looking at this video I'm almost certain that the plugs where never done. The charge cooler pipes don't look touched and there just aren't any finger prints etc on the spar plug cover under the engine cover
Great Video!!! Is your M4 dropped down, I mean suspension drop? If yes, when you do full turn to the left or right, does it touches body of the car? Mine for some reason when I dropped it with same rims and tires you have, hits little on each side body of the car.
So what you are saying is, if you want to upgrade your charge pipe and are going to change out the coil packs and plugs.... this is the best time to do it?
I had the dealer do my plugs once... they told me I needed valve cover gasket as oil on plugs. They did the job and I came home with an oil leak. True story. They cracked valve cover - wouldn't admit it. I did an amazing BMW M Track Day up at Monticello Raceway this past Thursday. Got to drive and beat on the M2, M3, M4, M5, M8, X5M & X6M. Beautiful track, well run event, cost about $500 for a 5 hour day of true joy. I burned more rubber than the event cost. The M2 Comp was used for a slalom timed course - 5 runs at it - so fun! I know you would have enjoyed it
Very good and less daunting than I thought. Are u still on the original coils? How often will u change them? I need to do my F82 in the next 10K and I’m currently at 35K.
Question about the torque wrench you used. You said torque to 18lbs but it says on the website good for 25-250lb so it will still work for 18? Also did u do the 1/2" or 3/8" on the impact gun.
I changed my plugs last week to this same set, while I did my catless downpipes and bms charge pipes. I'm running jb4 currently and will be changing to a custom tune soon, plugs are gapped to .022 I run an e30 tune on the car but before I did the e30 tune I was driving the car for about a week and on a hard pull on 93 pump gas had a drivetrain malfunction pop up with no other codes. Just wondering if you had a guess at what the issue could be. Thanks in advance.
@@TommyLGarage I took it apart again and installed BMW OEM plugs. Works great now! I think I might have gotten bad NGK's from Amazon. They were super cheap and now i know why!
NO, these do NOT come pre-gapped for the S55! I just saw he mentioned Brian (Kies) gapped them for him to .22. Most people gap them anywhere from .20 > .24 for the S55.
@@TommyLGarage NGK 97506 “stock gap” is for n20, not s55/n55. These plugs will only come pre-gapped for F8x if you pay extra for them from a tuner like RKTunes or Kies where you can specify the gap (usually .018, .020, or .022)
When I did mine it was an all day affair, after I put mine all back together I had a miss fire, used bimmer link to see which cylinder. Took it all apart again, found out on of the plugs wasn’t seated correctly. Then put it together again and still had a misfire. Took it all apart again took out the spark plug looked completely fine, checked gap again was fine then just retourqed it and put it all back together then it finally worked…I have no idea what was wrong with it lol

As someone with a p100d and a Stage2 e30 f80 I can tell you for a fact the m3 is way more fun. The Tesla is fast but just feels like an adult go kart tbh. There aren't really any fun engine mods you can do, and the driving experience is non existent. ... The F80 tho. Whew baby. Fall in love with it all over again everytime I switch from the Tesla (daily driver) to the M. Kudos on the tutorial! Now that I'm running the BM3 flex fuel kit I'll need to be doing plugs more often and my Indy shop wants $600 for labor alone. After seeing this I think I might just make an afternoon of it. Great stuff!

The right color is actually light brown. If it looks white/clean, you probably got i lean fuel mixture.
tommy - changing plugs today and using your guide @ 4:59 - you got your wish lol
Congrats! And yes I did haha
Btw Tommy, your link for spark plug socket is wrong, I ordered a 16mm from this and it’s the wrong size. Correct size is 14mm

There is no code for spark plug service

Have u had ur intercooler done?
Does it matter which tube goes into the hole to cover the spark plugs?
Yes. Has to be in the same order as removed
