"Take it out, inspect it, pretend you know what you're looking at..." 🤣🤣🤣 -- can relate to that one!
Haha
Did plugs and coils when I first picked up my previously owned F80 last year. Fairly easy job, just time consuming to take everything off before you finally get to the plugs. Thanks for the video, Tommy!
Thanks for being here !
Thank you for this upload. I’ve been waiting for you to do it!
No problem!
just did my plugs yesterday watching this video!! thank you so much!!
Glad it helped!
great job!
Thanks !!!
Been waiting for this thank you sir!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Love your channel man!
Thanks Jimmy !!
Wow did not know about the extra bracing in the engine bay of the M3/M4 great tutorial.
Thanks!
You made it seen pretty easy hopefully I can have the same luck having low to no experience 🤞
Nice job and great editing!
Thanks !!!
Great video 🎉 doing this today 🤙
I ordered my M4 2 weeks ago and thought seeing your channel and others would help me to do self maintenance. Sadly NO!. I'm getting the 4 yr extended maint program. I'm just not into all that part removal et al. However, I have learned tons from you and learned lots. So now I will subscribe as I anticipate I will learn loads more in the future.
Thanks and welcome to the family!!
Great video Tommy
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video very good diy video! Did my spark plugs for the first time with your video. 👍
Glad it helped :)
Thank you man! Im getting drivetrain malfunction and it’s been to the dealership whom I purchased the car from multiple times and they cant fix the car at all so im taking matters into my own hands now. I have charge pipes coming in the mail soon and im now gonna order new coil packs and sparkplugs
I am willing to bet it’s cracked charge pipes !
Thank you. Excellent video! Helped tremendously!!!!!
Great to hear!
Great Video!!! Is your M4 dropped down, I mean suspension drop? If yes, when you do full turn to the left or right, does it touches body of the car? Mine for some reason when I dropped it with same rims and tires you have, hits little on each side body of the car.
Super helpful bro
Thanks!
tommy - changing plugs today and using your guide @ 4:59 - you got your wish lol
Congrats! And yes I did haha
What are the torque values for all the struts and parts you're reattaching?
Have been following your channel since before I got my F83 M4. I appreciate all your videos, however wanted to highlight something. I used the link in your description to buy the spark plug thin wall socket. Shame on me I bought it without looking at the details and as it turned out the link points to the 16mm socket and not the 14mm which is the one for the S55 motor. I only realized after I had opened up the car and now it is still in that state while I wait for the 14mm socket to arrive. Not sure where the disconnect happened, but suggest updating the link. Cheers
Tommy, FYI if you are going to use a torque wrench at such a relatively low torque, do not HOLD the head of the wrench. This will lower the torque by you affecting the force on the head. I always spin the plugs and caliper bolds backwards so I do not cross thread! Good DIY!
Good call. Thanks
Anyone know the gap for plugs for a stock engine
Great tutorial! Thanks! Also, I've never seen spark plugs come out rusty looking after 5k miles. Doesn't seem normal to me. but I guess it didn't hurt.
They’re not rusty just toasty :)
The right color is actually light brown. If it looks white/clean, you probably got i lean fuel mixture.
Hey, great guide and I’m gonna change the plugs on my 2018 F82 comp.
One question, were you able to code the idrive to show the spark plug service?
There is no code for spark plug service
Did that long time ago but since I sold the car i kept my spark plugs socket ! And used it on my GT-R when i did sparks! Good guide 👍
Oh wow.. I guess it fits too!
@@TommyLGarage yes it does !
I’m going to be replacing the plugs in my F80 soon. And by that, I mean taking the car to Active Autowerke so they can do it while I get some work done.
Haha that's also a good way
Lmaoooo same 😂😂😂
Fajny odcinek i pozdrawiam
Dziękuje serdecznie!
“Inspect it, pretend you know what you’re looking at” sir you’re exposing my secrets!! 😂😂😂😂
You know it! :)
Very good and less daunting than I thought. Are u still on the original coils? How often will u change them? I need to do my F82 in the next 10K and I’m currently at 35K.
Thanks. Yes original coils. Zero issues with them.
Thanks! Going to do this for stage 2 soon! I’m too lazy and this doesn’t look fun lol
But it’s easy.
Pretend you know what you're looking at...PERFECT!! Okay, BMW charges a ton to change a set of plugs...and I kind of see why. Probably charging 5 hours of labor. One of the best DIY's I've seen! U still bees da man!
Thank you! I put a lot of work into this. But 5 hours of labor is a ripoff
What would BMW charge for this job? 500 dollars?
@@integranos891 I was quoted
@@g0alieman wow that’s crazy money!
@@integranos ya and the oem plugs cost me $50 and a fun couple of hours
look @ it and pretend you know what your looking @.....
i love it
Haha true story
Btw Tommy, your link for spark plug socket is wrong, I ordered a 16mm from this and it’s the wrong size. Correct size is 14mm
Nice video..I have 40k on my M4...should I change the coil gaskets as well when changing the plugs. It fairly cheap to buy. thoughts?
Worth it for sure. It gets hot in there
Sztos
Dziekuje za wizyte!
Best mudflaps in the game!!!!
Thanks!!!!
Hi, do you recommend using anti-seize on the plug threads?
No. BMW does not recommend it
Good job 👏 👏👏 why you didn’t change the coil too?
Thanks!! They didn’t need to be changed.
I changed my plugs last week to this same set, while I did my catless downpipes and bms charge pipes. I'm running jb4 currently and will be changing to a custom tune soon, plugs are gapped to .022 I run an e30 tune on the car but before I did the e30 tune I was driving the car for about a week and on a hard pull on 93 pump gas had a drivetrain malfunction pop up with no other codes. Just wondering if you had a guess at what the issue could be. Thanks in advance.
There could be many reasons. My guess is leak at the charge pipes.
Have u had ur intercooler done?
what trim tools do you recommend to take all this stuff off?
I added it in the description :) check it out
Question about the torque wrench you used. You said torque to 18lbs but it says on the website good for 25-250lb so it will still work for 18? Also did u do the 1/2" or 3/8" on the impact gun.
Yes it will still work.
Impact gun is 1/2
Nice Video Tommy, just wonder if there is a reset for spark plugs replacement needed in computer like oil change?
Nope!
@@TommyLGarage Thanks!
This will save everyone at least $400. I will be doing this when I get to 60k on my 2016, only 16k to go 👍🏽👍🏽Thank you!
Glad it helped!
$600 in NYC i just got quoted for that weeks ago
Actually its 1400-1700 at local BMW dealerships here in MD. Even with a CCA discount.
My BMW dealer "allegedly" done my major service yesterday and looking at this video I'm almost certain that the plugs where never done. The charge cooler pipes don't look touched and there just aren't any finger prints etc on the spar plug cover under the engine cover
Hey tommy for a stock m4 do you know if the new plugs come pregapped? If not do you know what they need to be gapped at?
Thanks.
NO, these do NOT come pre-gapped for the S55! I just saw he mentioned Brian (Kies) gapped them for him to .22. Most people gap them anywhere from .20 > .24 for the S55.
They come gapped for stock gap
@@TommyLGarage NGK 97506 “stock gap” is for n20, not s55/n55. These plugs will only come pre-gapped for F8x if you pay extra for them from a tuner like RKTunes or Kies where you can specify the gap (usually .018, .020, or .022)
Does it matter which tube goes into the hole to cover the spark plugs?
Yes. Has to be in the same order as removed
I had the dealer do my plugs once... they told me I needed valve cover gasket as oil on plugs. They did the job and I came home with an oil leak. True story. They cracked valve cover - wouldn't admit it.
I did an amazing BMW M Track Day up at Monticello Raceway this past Thursday. Got to drive and beat on the M2, M3, M4, M5, M8, X5M & X6M. Beautiful track, well run event, cost about $500 for a 5 hour day of true joy. I burned more rubber than the event cost. The M2 Comp was used for a slalom timed course - 5 runs at it - so fun! I know you would have enjoyed it
I did the one in Sonoma last summer and had so much fun that I’m going to do the Laguna Seca one next month
The upcoming M2 will be my next BMW
@@TommyLGarage 💪 Looking forward to seeing what you do with that one!
How long did the job take approximately start to finish with all pieces reinstalled?
2 hours max
@@TommyLGarage Nice job!
Tommy: Easy DIY
Me: Holy hellllllll
Haha
I'm with you Tommy I don't trust the dealership and the dealer's body shop and service center
If I only knew how to do body work
I used the same plugs you did with a .022 gap.
Very good
@@TommyLGarage I took it apart again and installed BMW OEM plugs. Works great now! I think I might have gotten bad NGK's from Amazon. They were super cheap and now i know why!
Do you know how to reset a check engine light?
REMOVE is the key word.
lol
When I did mine it was an all day affair, after I put mine all back together I had a miss fire, used bimmer link to see which cylinder. Took it all apart again, found out on of the plugs wasn’t seated correctly. Then put it together again and still had a misfire. Took it all apart again took out the spark plug looked completely fine, checked gap again was fine then just retourqed it and put it all back together then it finally worked…I have no idea what was wrong with it lol
Oooff...must have been a fun day!
👀 ..Am I the only one amazed with how he just went for the negative connector like that to remove it from the terminal or nah?
I don't follow?
Thanks for this video and keeping me from getting divorced. I love my M4 more than my wife but I can’t afford alimony.
Hope she lets you keep the car :)
I just want to know how is your engine bay so clean lol
I keep it super clean :)
@@TommyLGarage lol sad youre selling her. Here i wanted to make mines a full time track car but im torn on getting an individual g80 or go p car with a newer gt4 (gt3s are rediculously priced still lol)
Tesla maybe easy to work on but will it be as fun? And when I say fun I am you love wrenching as well as fish tailing that m3.
As someone with a p100d and a Stage2 e30 f80 I can tell you for a fact the m3 is way more fun. The Tesla is fast but just feels like an adult go kart tbh. There aren't really any fun engine mods you can do, and the driving experience is non existent.
... The F80 tho. Whew baby. Fall in love with it all over again everytime I switch from the Tesla (daily driver) to the M.
Kudos on the tutorial! Now that I'm running the BM3 flex fuel kit I'll need to be doing plugs more often and my Indy shop wants $600 for labor alone. After seeing this I think I might just make an afternoon of it. Great stuff!
I thought he threw the 981 out in favour of the R8?
That was a loaner
No wonder BMW dealerships charge an arm and a leg for labor to do a service on the f82
This one is not so bad
Siema Tommy
Siemanko!!!!
I just changed the plugs on my M4. I am getting a “Drive Train Malfunction “ message. Tommy Help!
Check your connections. Plugs gap would not give that error. You must have not connected something
You’re lucky it was loose ……..as opposed to them putting it in with an impact wrench. 😂
You’re right !!
no tesla! keep the f80!!!!
Yes !
BOTH 😉
no you do not need to disconnect your battery, wtf useless
Yes you do. It’s easy to short things under the hood. The negative positive terminal is right under there
Wow it's almost an engine out job 😅
Haha yup
