I watched the Celestial Toymaker as a 10 year old, scared the life out of me. Michael Gough saying "make your move, Doctor. Make your last move". Only Gough could deliver that line in quite that chilling way. Still remember it 57 years later. NPH has a huge burden, living up to that. Gough was hugely underrated, playing, among scores of great performances, both the Toymaker and Alfred Pennyworth and making those polar opposite roles equally convincing and memorable. So memorable that a character he created 57 years ago is being revived for the 60th anniversary

Lovely video. *VERY* few villains cast as long a shadow on Doctor Who. And most of the others were introduced later - The Master, Omega, Davros, the Black Guardian and so forth. The Toymaker's return to Doctor Who is something I've waited for since I was a kid. And NEIL PATRICK-HARRIS playing him. It's a dream come true!!!

The Toymaker is Q meets Mister Mxyzptlk. He has the near limitless power of both. He has Q's genius. He has Mxyzptlk's obsessive focus on the one who's defeated him. Much like Mxyzptlk is bound to the ability to banish him by getting him to say his own name backwards, Toymaker is bound by the rules of games, he can't cheat and has to play fairly. He's also got the quirkiness of Mister Mxyzptlk but tempered with the gravitas and almost regal sense of knowing he's the most powerful being in the room of Q.
And this I'll assume is why the Doctor regenerated back into Tennant, complete with the 10th Doctors clothes (something that's never happened before), the Toymaker was behind it.
as per RTD's promo vids, Ten coming back as Fourteen had little to do by the Toymaker. perhaps it was more like Time Lord energy placing Ten back where he was needed to get Donna Noble back to help him face the Toymaker.
Very interesting summary of the extended story. I vividly recall watching the original story on TV, and being terrified that they would choose the "wrong" Tardis. One of the games involved choosing the real Tardis from a set of replicas, with the only clue being that their dimensional ratio's were slightly off! I always thought that the show missed an opportunity to reintroduce the Toymaker during Pertwee's run, and again during Mcoy's tenure. There may be more but these are the two that struck me at the time. Firstly the main villain in Carnival of Monsters, portrayed as a bumbling showman, could easily have been slightly reworked to be a manifestation of the Toymaker, with his malfunctioning machine holding the monsters being revealed as one of his collapsing Toyrooms. Secondly in the Circus in Greatest Show in the Galaxy the plot could easily have been tweaked to reveal a link between the God's of Ragnarok and the Toymaker, but these are both roads not taken so l look forward to this long overdue reappearance.
This is well done, and ordered. I've consumed as a consumer all those stories mentioned except the comic, but I didn't know the order from the Toymaker's perspective. I also don't remember the Magic Mousetrap, though I know I have it, I'll have to relisten. The story that I love most is Divided Loyalties. My asbsolute dream would be a flashback scene with someone playing a young Hartnell with Rallon and Millenia meeting him as Tennant narrates to Donna their first meeting.
Ok, my theory is that the Toymaker arrived when Jodie's regen happened, and put the ILLUSION that the Doctor is Tennant, aka 14. Donna is part of the illusion. When the Doctor defeats him, he wakes up as Ncuti, which explains Ncuti's "Somebody tell me what the hell is going on here". Just a theory.....😊
When you sorta fell out of watching the Doctor a while ago,(many years at this point) and then youtube recommends this and within the first 30 seconds of the video you panic and just start saying 'what!?' excitedly, over and over again.

I'm from asian myself (Malaysia) and I have a lot of Chinese friends and they literaly wouldn't care about the costume. For me I think Toymaker look more badass with that chinese emperor costume since it make him look like someone who like collecting antiques things. The new costume is just your average Donny from mall
None of those audio books and such are canon. No point even bringing them up. The 60th anniversary completely backs this up when the Doctor loses and is like "I won the first time." and the Toymaker was like "Best 2 outta 3!" So, clearly this is only their second meeting.
60’s era vs modern day era. People must remember that it’s a different time. The costume wouldn’t have been seen as ‘racist’ back then. People are way too apologetic for the past. By all means, update the costume. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s perfectly clear who the character is without the old costume. Just don’t bang on at how it’s so racist.
I agree. Also the OG costume looks like a king from a deck of cards which fits the game theme pretty well. IDK if that was meant or not and I can see parts of Chinese traditional clothing in it. But I think they should of made it look more like a king from cards. But tbh I do like the new design and can live with it

You know, i am noticing similarities between the Toymaker and other entities in scifi. The Q from Star Trek, the Beyonders from Marvel, Mr. Mxyzptlk from DC Comics, exc. Interesting though, with a multiverse involved in many of them that the Toymaker has just been having fun in other universes. Different names and faces, but him non the less.
It is possible. There's another UA-cam video about Mr. Mxyzptlk (MM) that provides evidence that MM is the same person in every appearance, and may also be The Impossible Man at Marvel Comics. To me, MM and The Toymaker are very similar. Mr. Mxyzptlk has unlimited power to do anything he wants. His only limitations is the ones he places on himself, and he always lives up to his word.
It is strange that he is underutilised considering he is immortal and he is a great nemesis like The Master. I like the casting of him in the 60s and the recent episode. I feel like someone like the Celestial Toymaker would have been a greater threat in the series. An immortal who plays games and can distort reality. You can virtually do anything with him

I have a theory that the Toymaker is a Timelord,as not only did they find his name in a Timelord database,but he has also changed his appearance each time he is seen,and so has his outfit,just like the Doctor,he also has a contained universe he presides in and controls,which indicates that it can be driven and controlled(like a TARDIS anybody?),and most of all like a TARDIS can be destroyed,yet this itself does not destroy its inhabitant(s),I think it’s too many coincidences to be coincidental at all.

The one issue I have after reading her essay is them saying that using the “N” word in there is a common American version of the children’s “Eenie meanie minney moe.” I am American and I was born in 1971 and have never heard that version until this discussion about it and a clip from the car guy using it. (Can’t think of his name or the show sorry) I have a vague memory or hearing that that was an old version but I would guess it wasn’t used in the US since maybe the 50’s except maybe in the south. I was raised in California which tends to be more progressive. Anyway I have also never heard of celestial being a racial slur either. I’m not saying these things don’t exist. Have you been deliberately trying to not notice the n-word your entire life or something? As to the word Celestial, it's a racial slur of Californian origin, your home state invented it! Back when the Chinese were coming to America before the Chinese Exclusion Act, they called their homeland "The Celestial Empire", and Californians quickly took to referring to all Asian people as "Celestials". Honestly, it was only in heavy use in California, and a bit in the UK. Fallen out of style now, but in the 1960s older people were still using it and there were still businesses that used the word in their names. "Common" is an interesting question here. Californians have probably made more progress than most American states, it's true, but racial slurs are still common today even in California. If you don't notice them I'd say that's more to do with you choosing to not notice it that them not being used.

Tardis Central should be aware that the source you used to side-step (but at least you mentioned it) the controversy about the original character has SPECIFICALLY ASKED NOT TO BE CITED because it's an 11 year-old article and the author doesn't want a bunch of people jumping down her throat about "woke mind virus" BS (my words not hers). But I'm glad the controversy was mentioned here. You don't have to let the problematic first version ruin it for you if you're the kind of fan who gets excited about old character returning, but it's amazing how many "explained"/"lore" videos are out there right now that just ignore it completely. Not to mention comment sections full of people who don't know anything about it and just want anyone who points any of it out to have their voice taken away ala the Doctor in the original story.

Toying with time and realities of the timelines of the origins of the doctors regeneration from the first doctor to the events of the day of the doctor in a nano timeline of every doctors life's. Toymaker echoes his powers through time and time again? There's been a shadow over the doctors past involvement, and his memories were changed by a single certain powerful figure from the outset of the return of the 9th doctor or 10th. There's been some mysterious forces at work leading the doctor to this moment, and the doctor hasn't released a thing about it, but sometimes there's something he notices in the corner of his eye, then it's disappears a split second? This is the Toymaker his managed to hold of the distortion of reality with ease for now and then? One question is, who is the real face between the realities of this Toymaker? Is he related to the doctor as it could be said he might be the father of time and the doctors father? Or is he the first time lord the creator of the time lords a possible answer to be revealed?*
What really scary about the toy maker he is pretty much an eldrich like existance he is literal walking god the doctor has always stood as a larger then life figure like of demigods of ancient myth which he probabaly did himself but to the toy maker he is no diffrent then a mere mortal an insect compared to the toy maker if he really wanted to destroy the doctor yet no the toy maker is the one giving them the handy cap the deal the homecourt advantage with the doctor only evee being able to run away from him or barely escaping and imprisoning him knowing full well its not going to last
I hope they don't screw him up. The Celestial Toymaker is my favourite from Doctor Who. Pls don't shovel LGBTQ nonsense into it. Jodie's series failed because of it. Personally though, I don't see the original toymaker outfit as racist. I just see an Alien being seeing an earthly outfit, and wearing it simply because he likes the look. (The Doctor does the same. Which is why some of his outfits look very garish. Like John Pertwee or Colin Baker for example.) If we constantly worry about people becoming offended about something so little like an outfit, then how can we ever progress. You need to take risks sometimes to create great things.
The Toymaker reminds me of "Q" from Star Trek. Both love to play games and both have the ability to distort reality and time.

I just watched it, watching the Loose Cannon recreations for the first three episodes. I liked it.
Hopefully they have the resources needed to do the "Bored Reality Warper" thing Justice.
Personally, I like the idea of the Toymaker being the Crystal Guardian. It ties an original villain with the original lore of the Doctor Who Universe.

= the Timelords got split up into two opposing factions at the end of the timewar; because 1 group was fully ascended because they where closer to Rassilons "ascention device" (aka the Key to time for the new WHoniverse) as it split up the Timelords into two opposing factions as Gallifrey got not just frozen in that last moment, it also got burnt/ascended/terraformed. /this is what turned Gallifrey into Akhaten as it exted the void in end of Twice upon a time (and killed the TARDIS) as the "ascention wave" hit the TARDIS shortly after it exited the void with Gallifrey in tow; (this was the reason the TARDIS threw out JW (to save her and the Earth theTARDIS had exited nearby. I'm from asian myself (Malaysia) and I have a lot of Chinese friends and they literaly wouldn't care about the costume. For me I think Toymaker look more badass with that chinese emperor costume since it make him look like someone who like collecting antiques things. The new costume is just your average Donny from mall

None of those audio books and such are canon. No point even bringing them up. The 60th anniversary completely backs this up when the Doctor loses and is like "I won the first time." and the Toymaker was like "Best 2 outta 3!" So, clearly this is only their second meeting.

60’s era vs modern day era. People must remember that it’s a different time. The costume wouldn’t have been seen as ‘racist’ back then. People are way too apologetic for the past. By all means, update the costume. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s perfectly clear who the character is without the old costume. Just don’t bang on at how it’s so racist.
I agree. Also the OG costume looks like a king from a deck of cards which fits the game theme pretty well. IDK if that was meant or not and I can see parts of Chinese traditional clothing in it. But I think they should of made it look more like a king from cards. But tbh I do like the new design and can live with it

You know, i am noticing similarities between the Toymaker and other entities in scifi. The Q from Star Trek, the Beyonders from Marvel, Mr. Mxyzptlk from DC Comics, exc. Interesting though, with a multiverse involved in many of them that the Toymaker has just been having fun in other universes. Different names and faces, but him non the less.
It is possible. There's another UA-cam video about Mr. Mxyzptlk (MM) that provides evidence that MM is the same person in every appearance, and may also be The Impossible Man at Marvel Comics. To me, MM and The Toymaker are very similar.
Mr. Mxyzptlk has unlimited power to do anything he wants. His only limitations is the ones he places on himself, and he always lives up to his word.

I have a theory that the Toymaker is a Timelord,as not only did they find his name in a Timelord database,but he has also changed his appearance each time he is seen,and so has his outfit,just like the Doctor,he also has a contained universe he presides in and controls,which indicates that it can be driven and controlled(like a TARDIS anybody?),and most of all like a TARDIS can be destroyed,yet this itself does not destroy its inhabitant(s),I think it’s too many coincidences to be coincidental at all.

As other comments mention "Celestial" used to be a racist term to refer to Asians. When mixed with an eastern monk costume it's not a good look and can be considered "Yellow Face".

Just to let everyone know the toy maker is a D.C. comics villain from 1943. So the Doctor belongs to DC Comics.
The one issue I have after reading her essay is them saying that using the “N” word in there is a common American version of the children’s “Eenie meanie minney moe.” I am American and I was born in 1971 and have never heard that version until this discussion about it and a clip from the car guy using it. (Can’t think of his name or the show sorry) I have a vague memory or hearing that that was an old version but I would guess it wasn’t used in the US since maybe the 50’s except maybe in the south. I was raised in California which tends to be more progressive. Anyway I have also never heard of celestial being a racial slur either. I’m not saying these things don’t exist. I’m just saying I wouldn’t consider them common.

As to the word Celestial, it's a racial slur of Californian origin, your home state invented it! Back when the Chinese were coming to America before the Chinese Exclusion Act, they called their homeland "The Celestial Empire", and Californians quickly took to referring to all Asian people as "Celestials". Honestly, it was only in heavy use in California, and a bit in the UK. Fallen out of style now, but in the 1960s older people were still using it and there were still businesses that used the word in their names.
"Common" is an interesting question here. Californians have probably made more progress than most American states, it's true, but racial slurs are still common today even in California. If you don't notice them I'd say that's more to do with you choosing to not notice it that them not being used.

Tardis Central should be aware that the source you used to side-step (but at least you mentioned it) the controversy about the original character has SPECIFICALLY ASKED NOT TO BE CITED because it's an 11 year-old article and the author doesn't want a bunch of people jumping down her throat about "woke mind virus" BS (my words not hers). But I'm glad the controversy was mentioned here. You don't have to let the problematic first version ruin it for you if you're the kind of fan who gets excited about old character returning, but it's amazing how many "explained"/"lore" videos are out there right now that just ignore it completely. Not to mention comment sections full of people who don't know anything about it and just want anyone who points any of it out to have their voice taken away ala the Doctor in the original story.

This is the Toymaker his managed to hold of the distortion of reality with ease for now and then? One question is, who is the real face between the realities of this Toymaker? Is he related to the doctor as it could be said he might be the father of time and the doctors father? Or is he the first time lord the creator of the time lords a possible answer to be revealed?*

What really scary about the toy maker he is pretty much an eldrich like existance he is literal walking god the doctor has always stood as a larger then life figure like of demigods of ancient myth which he probabaly did himself but to the toy maker he is no diffrent then a mere mortal an insect compared to the toy maker if he really wanted to destroy the doctor yet no the toy maker is the one giving them the handy cap the deal the homecourt advantage with the doctor only evee being able to run away from him or barely escaping and imprisoning him knowing full well its not going to last
I hope they don't screw him up. The Celestial Toymaker is my favourite from Doctor Who. Pls don't shovel LGBTQ nonsense into it. Jodie's series failed because of it.
Personally though, I don't see the original toymaker outfit as racist. I just see an Alien being seeing an earthly outfit, and wearing it simply because he likes the look. (The Doctor does the same. Which is why some of his outfits look very garish. Like John Pertwee or Colin Baker for example.)
If we constantly worry about people becoming offended about something so little like an outfit, then how can we ever progress. You need to take risks sometimes to create great things.
