great teacher! clear and detailed photos and explanations. I am an old DYI guy playing and learning how to fix the AC on our camper van. I learned from this video the importance of changing all capacitors and relays at once. I worked my way one by one and have ended up with a problem again, probably a new capacitor blown.

Thank you so much for this fine and informative video! My fridge has one of the modules with the built in control board, and it failed last. Thanks to you, I was able to isolate the probable issue and swap out the part myself. Up and running, saved a lot of $$ and maintained social distancing. The new trifecta!

Today I changed burnt PTC Thermistor in my Samsung fridge. Your instructions mentioned to check the resistance between starter and running inputs (bottom two out of total three)of PTC. It should not be open. Guess what! Mine was open. Along with other tests I decided to chagned PTC for $15.00 from Grainger. It worked. Thank you very much for a very good explanation.

I have a 17 year old mini fridge that recently stopped cooling. Upon plugging it in, the compressor would hum for a few seconds and then the overload would click and trip open. Checked the protector, very low ohms. Checked the start relay, completely open. No rattles, but when I took off the cover the disc and contacts looked pretty bad. Wanting to make sure a new start relay was the right fix, I made a jumper for the start relay pins, and then plugged in the fridge just for 1-2 seconds and unplugged it, and the compressor started up and sounded normal. After watching your video and the troubleshooting I feel confident enough to order a new start relay. Thank you for sharing.

Recently had a Frigidaire mini-fridge that wasn't cooling. Compressor was hot and when the thermal overload reset, it was pilling 9 amps with an LRA of 11. I checked the PTC and it was reading about 50 ohms. I disassembled it and found signs of carbon/overheating on the run terminal/PTC contact surfaces. I scraped both surfaces down and got a reading of 9 ohms. I reinstalled it and the fridge started up with 1.3 amps while running. It continued working while I awaited arrival of the $10 replacement. It's running fine. Thanks for the great video which I found after I had repaired the fridge.

I'm starting to thing my compressor may be mechanically stuck as I have replaced the relay/protector circuit, the run capacitor tested fine and all electrical readings on the compressor are exactly at spec from the datasheet. My condenser fan was making a loud racket, so I inspected and cleaned under the fridge from the front only, which stopped the noise, apparently by stopping the fan, because an hour or so later I noticed a puddle from the ice dispenser. The compressor was extremely warm. When I tested the protection circuit I got and am still getting .1 ohm, then 0, with 3 different meters and 2 sets of probes, so for $36 I replaced, but compressor still won't start(tested the new one also, reading didn't fluctuate). So, any ways to unstuck a compressor? I'm thinking about trying a heat gun, but this is not my area of expertise.

What about a solid state device in place of the thermistor? I was checking a refrigerator for my home and found a tiny circuit board in the start up plastic shell that plugged into the compressor.

Does the Start Capacitor and Relay have any effect on the fridge freezer not shutting off?
I already changed my thermostat for a brand new one so am now thinking that it could be a bad start cap or a faulty switch that is permanently on inside the relay.
Note that mine has no control boards etc just a simple mechanical thermostat a Hotpoint RFAA52P.

@9:00 those capacitors I’m fairly certain were run capacitors. Their mfd ratings are low. Even supco has kits that identify these as run capacitors not start caps. Still a great video!

Hi from the overload terminal to ground I got a reading of 115v however from the relay terminal to ground im not getting any reading is that normal or should I be getting a reading of 115v aswell?

My compressor protector (the gray one) it reads around 10. that's mean it's time to replace? Is this effecting the compressor? My compressor hot and is not running, lost cooling a day ago, try to figure out whats the problem. I tested the compressor with the ohm meter, seem like it's good.

The capacitor in the third one from left is start capacitor or run capacitor? Thank you

I just checked 3 in 1 Supco RCO 410 capacitance which is 243-292MFD. I watched videos and found a lot of people used this to replace the original 15 MFD. Will it be bad for compressor? Thank you

Thank you for posting this very informative video,,,My question to you is what caused the compressor in my wine fridge to stop running and get very hot,,,Initially it stopped working and I replaced the overload protector(6750c-0004r) and start/run relay(PTC starter relay( P6R8MC) ,that didn't solve the problem so upon testing the thermostat I found it bad,so I got it to run after replacing the thermostat(18GLB020008) and that's when after running for awhile the compressor got very hot and I noticed a strange smell.,,I'm wondering if maybe it developed a refrigerant leak after moving things around like the condenser /evaporator,Thanks in advance

Hi, I did all the tests shown here and on the compressor. It leads to the relay but I hear it clicking on after I pull it in. Can the circuit board still cause the compressor to not engage? I don't hear a second click for over draw. How would you know or could it be low on freon?

I got a ratteling sound comming from the overload unit when I shake it after removing it. Got a new one but it rattles to like the old one. Is this normal or does this mean its bad? Been trying to prevent a surging problem I was having with my new Daewoo mini fridge. Causes a slight trip in the circut its plugged into.

Hi there, I have a Sub-zero 511 from 1991. Yes, it’s still running and I am trying to keep it that way. The freezer stopped working and I found that I have an issue with the freezer start relay. I opened it up and rotated the ptc thermistor disc and it is running again. I cannot find a replacement anywhere. Do you know some of these start relays are interchangeable? Thanks for your very informative videos!

Craig this is great video explaining these start components. I greatly appreciate all of your videos. I have a question. I work at a facility doing the HVAC throughout the buildings. Just installed a new thermostat on an old Traulsen reach in fridge. It's over 30 years old. runs great now. After watching this video and another about currect relays I am considering getting new start components for this Traulsen. Would that be the proactive right thing to do? The parts for the Tecumseh compressor can be gotten locally for under $50. Your thoughts?
